I visited Kalimotxo on a Saturday evening with a reservation at 6:15 pm, specifically at the bar. Despite having been to Hestia a few times before, I had always believed that the bar was part of Hestia. To my surprise, it's actually Kalimotxo that shares the same kitchen as Hestia. Kalimotxo is a charming Spanish restaurant and cocktail bar located in downtown Austin. My husband and I stopped by to indulge in some delectable tapas that strongly reminded me of the flavors I experienced in Barcelona, Spain. Their menu offered a delightful array of snacks, shared plates, and two enticing desserts that I regretfully didn't have time for. We kicked off our culinary journey with the Pan Con Tomato, a delightful starter priced at $11. The Croquetas de bacalao, a personal favorite from my travels, lived up to my expectations. Meanwhile, my husband ordered the one-bite octopus and chorizo, which he thoroughly enjoyed. We also shared the Kali Burger, featuring wagyu beef, Mahon cheese, garlic aioli, caramelized onions, and pickled baby cheese peppers. The burger impressed me because it didn't overwhelm the palate, allowing the delicious flavor of the wagyu to shine through. While I can't recall the names of the cocktails we had, I can vouch that they were delicious. Unfortunately, their drink menu isn't available online. The service throughout our visit was excellent, with two attentive waiters consistently checking on us. The only odd incident occurred when we arrived five minutes early and were initially seated across the bar at a small ledge facing the window. Despite there being ample unoccupied bar seating, we were told it was reserved for reservations, including ours, which left me puzzled. However, after requesting to be seated at the bar, the host eventually accommodated our request. Surprisingly, during our hour-and-a-half stay, only one other couple sat at the bar, even though there were other vacant seats. On a positive note, the ambiance was complemented by a lively 90's playlist, which added to the overall enjoyment of our dining experience. In the future, I might consider sitting outside, given how inviting and cozy it appeared during our visit. In summary, we had a fantastic experience at Kalimotxo, and I'm eagerly looking forward to returning due to the outstanding food and service. One thing to note is that valet parking is available on weekends, but not on weekdays. They park the cars around the corner from the restaurant in a parking garage with small stalls and no EV charging stations.

Came for a late Wednesday dinner with my fiancé and it was packed! Turns out there were two concerts in Austin that day, so everyone was out downtown. We ended up sitting at the bar despite having a reservations. We ordered two bites, the Kali Burger, the tortilla and the pork belly. All came out at a decent time but was very salty for my liking. I'm not sure if it's all food here or just what we ordered. If I had to pick my favorite out of our dishes, it had to be the pork belly. Overall I thought this place was a little pricey for the qualify of food we ordered.

I came here with a buddy of mine seeking a smallish place with nice ambiance after the sun went down. This place does have a nice vibe but our waiter did not. I say this because we asked him about the size of the "small plates" and he confused us about portion sizes He said the burger was small and encouraged us to order multiple things - he also had this air in the way he spoke - it really ruined the vibe here. The wagyu burger is not tiny, it's not huge but it will satisfy you. I wish I knew this before order a bunch of things - but it's more than that - not sure how smart or cunning the waiter thought he was but news flash - we felt it from the start - it was like an obvious red flag Anyways, back to what really matters - the food: We actually ended up getting desert too and yet the waiter asked us if we would like anything else (hah! Is there a post-desert menu?) - some of the small dishes were not very appetizing to me so I figured an influx of sugar would do me good instead The wagyu burger was not bad - I do recommend trying it. Desert was nothing to write home about but pretty good and certainly looked instagramable. (We got Kali Sundaes) I think I'll give this place another try, visually it is certainly appealing

Was looking for a last minute reservation for drinks and bites (but mostly drinks) downtown and Kalimotxo came up. I was excited since tapas are one of my favorite things. We were running late and I called to let them know. Our seating ended up not being the most comfortable, but the view made up for it. The octopus and the bread with anchovies and jamon serrano were my favorite of everything we ordered, but everything was delicious. The potatoes were perfectly crispy and the sauces really managed to make potatoes a standout dish. All the drinks were crafted beautifully and I have to say that I'd come back here even if it was just for the drinks. We finished off with the basque cheesecake and WOW! It was deliciously burnt in the outside and decadently creamy in the inside. A must try for sure.

I had a good dinner experience here. Food was presented nicely and the service was friendly and helpful. It is a nice spot to sit outside and grab food/drinks. This is a typical tapas experience, small bites, small plates. I think this type of food does not use very powerful seasoning but the sauces gave an extra oomph of depth of flavor. I tried the mushroom and goat cheese small plates, the papas bravas and the pork dish. We finished dinner with the basque cheesecake and a scoop of peach ice cream. That cheesecake tho . The "off menu" scoop of ice cream was $8, as much as a whole dessert on the menu, a bit eye roll about that but ok.

Porrón, dog friendly, lovely outdoor patio with couch seating, and excellent tapas! Professional, friendly, and courteous waitstaff. They even brought a water bowl for our Siberian Husky. Outdoor patio is at the entrance to the restaurant, with heat lamps and outdoor tables with flames. Need to reserve the couch tables if you want a table with flames. Otherwise, you'll get a heat lamp, which are very warm. Staff is equipped with blankets to also distribute if needed. Food is prepared quickly even for a busy Saturday night! Tapas were excellent. 7 tapas, 2 cocktails, 2 porróns, $212. Well worth it! Highly recommend. A+++

I've been wanting to try this place for a long time bc I love Basque region food! However, I honestly wasn't impressed with the food. The patatas which are so standard for Spanish food had way too much garlic aioli for my liking, it was hard to taste anything else. The croquettes and cheesecake were good but my favorite was the cured beef item. Loved the drinks though - sandia Rita and pineapple drink!

The staff here were super attentive and knowledgeable and this restaurant definitely had the relaxed Basque country vibe they were going for. The plates are small even by small plates standards but you can get all the classic Spanish hits like pan con tomate and papas bravas. Do not be alarmed by all the sardine dishes on the menu- they are worth trying even if you don't think you like sardines. If you try them and remain unconvinced, hey, at least it's just that small portion!

Drinks, drinks, drinks! If nothing else, come here for the (albeit pricey) drinks! Cocktails are $15 but we loved every one we ordered - especially the Sandia Rita. Holy cow the Sandia Rita was so refreshing, crisp, sweet but not TOO sweet, and absolutely perfect with the Tajin on the rim. Only complaint is there is a ton of ice in the glass so we only got a couple sips and ended up ordering 5 of them lol. Maybe it'd be possible to request with light ice, I'm not sure. I also ordered the Mangonada that came in a slushy form and thought it was okay but would pass on it unless you're craving the particular flavor. I also wish they filled that glass more full. My friend ordered the Pink Panther and remarked that it was probably the strongest tasting drink out of all 3 that we tried. For tapas, we shared the piquillo (YUM goat cheese), octopus, shishitos, patatas bravas (GET THESE), pan con tomat, and tortilla espanola (this is meant to be cold!) . We had also ordered the flatbread but they forgot to bring it out to us. However, our waitress was super apologetic and gave us the basque cheesecake on the house. Honestly we were so tipsy we didn't even realize we were missing it but we appreciated the thoughtful gesture! The basque cheesecake was great but it's also something with limited ingredients that's super easy to make at home (see: bon appétit recipe). Overall, the ambiance was nice sitting on their outside patio around sunset. Drinks were great but I wish there was more in each glass to drink for $15 each. The food was meh, the only things I would order again would be the patatas and the piquillo. Cheers!

Kalimotxo is a nice spot to get together for cocktails and small plates. Spanish tapas are a rare find in Austin so I appreciate the option. The single biggest standout in my mind is the delicious burnt basque cheesecake. I also order the (cold) tortilla espanola and pan con tomate consistently. The entire restaurant is outdoors. I've sat on both the front patio and the hidden back space that is wrapped behind Hestia. Although there are some fans, they do not reach all tables so my group struggled in the August heat. Prepare and dress appropriately for the weather!

The Pintxos are SO good, especially the one with mushrooms. One of the best food bites in general I've had in a long time. The cocktails here are one of my favorite places to get cocktails, specifically the Bad Rabbit- so refreshing any season. The burger is amazing, the batatas (extremely crispy potatoes with awesome sauce) are to die for. Pretty much everything on the menu is great but the flatbread not worth the stomach space :) Honestly shocked at how few reviews bc the upscale experience, location, cocktails and food are all amaze.

All stars, all the time for this place. As someone to lived on tapas while living in Spain, this place felt like a nostalgia trip. The tapas menu was definitely elevated but it captured some of the great dishes that I have come to love and expect from eating tapas. The great thing about this place is that you can have as much and as little as you want. You can take your time and decide whether you want more or whether you want less. I do wish their dessert menu had more options while I was there but it doesn't take away from the rest of the menu. And if cocktails are your thing, which for me, they are, then you need to try every single concoction on their menu. Photos included enjoy. This place is a great place for date night. I suggest getting a seat outside or by the window because the sunset over the creek is money!

Went on a Friday night and it was full but not packed. Reservation recommended but maybe not mandatory. Felt like the perfect amount of people there. A kalimotxo is my fave summer drink, so I was stoked to see a place that gave it a spotlight (and I didn't have to convince my dining companions that, yes, I swear it's a real cocktail!). Service here was so, so good and we loved the food. We basically were like, give us the top half of the menu! The rhubarb and blueberry crudo was refreshing af, the shishito peppers were charred just the way I like and served alongside a very complementary dipping sauce, and even the olives and nuts were treated with extra flavorful care. We did have one service slip up where we had to wait for one of our plates for a long time but the servers were so apologetic and took great care of us. It happens! We're not mad about that, and honestly it's a great test of service that they passed with flying colors. The food was fantastic, the cocktails were * chef's kiss * great, and the patio was everything you could want. Even in late June with the temps close to 90, it had such a fantastic breeze, and doesn't have the sun pound on it during the day, so it didn't feel uncomfortable. Music was good, and the vibe was great but not too loud so we could have conversation comfortably. All in all, a great experience and we will definitely be back.

We were treated nicely, but we definitely could have gotten in right away. By the time we walked in, the place was probably at 60% capacity. It was standing room only at the bar, but not overcrowded by any means. There is a dress code, but it's not entirely clear what it is. They ask for your cellphones upon entering and give you a key in exchange, but there doesn't seem to be any security to enforce it if you don't want to give them up. I have no problem with their policy, but I bet a lot of customers do. Interestingly, their little social experiment seemed to have a positive effect, where we ended up talking to strangers and vice versa. The Powder Room may be making America social again.

The bartender claimed I was drunk and cut me off anyway. I was at the bar talking to a girl while waiting to get a drink (the wait was long because the service is very slow, despite the bar not being very busy at all). She was clearly into me, and the bartender kept jumping in trying to talk to her too (instead of doing his job making drinks). He was doing all sorts of things to try and flirt with her and make her laugh: pulling out and showing her buckets of pre mixed cocktails, running and sliding under the bar, etc. She was engaging with both of us , and right in the middle of that, I get cut off out of nowhere. No explanation other than claiming I looked drunk, which I very clearly wasn't. It felt very clear what was going on--he wanted me out of the way. I left and asked the bouncer on my way out if I seemed drunk. This was literally two minutes later. He said no, not at all, and asked me why I would even ask that. I then told him exactly what happened and asked him to let the owner or whoever was in charge know about this extremely unprofessional conduct so they can discipline the bartender. His response was that the bartender has discretion to cut anyone off, and let me know the bartender is supposedly married so he couldn't have been flirting with any of the customers. Well, sounds like his logic is flawed--not only COULD he flirt with his customers, he WAS, and was therefore cheating. I hope his wife finds out. This is perfectly representative of Austin customer service lately and not normal in other places. I was in Tampa for an entire month earlier this year and this would've been unthinkable there. I'm not coming back.
