The club along with friends from Dallas and San Antonio headed east after the Texas Independence Day Parade. Libation education started at Derelict Airship AKA Violet Crown Spirits just west of Bastrop. You've hear of strip mall chic? Think business park chic! Quite similar to my friends over at Desert Door in Driftwood. Matt was an excellent host explaining the history behind each of their offerings. Let's start with Absinthe. Banned for many years in the US and parts of Europe, small batch distilleries have been popping up in the US since 2007. The anise flavor is quite strong and it's recommended you cut it with water. I've heard sugar cubes are common as well. Other in house offerings include an Elderflower and Jasmine Liqueur. Girlfriend and I's personal favorite was the Jasmine and we took home a bottle to pair up with other local spirits. A top notch experience from start to finish. "Frontier Cellars" - Is they a small retail shop selling other people's wines? What is it? We were curious. Well, someone had to be first and we were totally game. So we checked out their hours and I added a reminder it to my Outlook calendar. I am so glad I did! At first my wife was like... are we heading to the right place? We turned onto a gravel road. And if it felt like we were entering a working ranch, that could perhaps be because it is also a working ranch. But this made it the ideal setting to taste Texas wines! We were delighted to discover that they do, in fact, make their own wines. And they know what they're doing. Our favorite of their wines was produced and bottled in Hye, TX (near Fredericksburg). And they will be planting a vineyard here in Smithville, too :-) We tasted all five if their wines. Two roses, a white, a Sangiovese, and a Cab/Malbec blend. They have a great curated flight option for a great price. We also ordered two glasses of their "Big Red." And that was so good, we ordered a bottle to take with us and we joined their newsletter. We'll come back to sip wine, enjoy the view and listed to some live music. They have foods to snack on, too. We had the charcuterie. It was very nice. The meats were nice, the crackers were amazing, we enjoyed the cheese (especially the high-end parmesan) and there were great condiments including some delightful pickled Peruvian peppers. I expect that this place will become very popular very quickly!

The small facility, unmarked, is located in a very industrial area of S. Austin, with just enough room for crafting small batches of gin. I love being around people who are knowledgeable and passionate about their craft and Charles, our guide and one of the owners, exudes it. Maybe it's the gin he's pumping into me, but I found Charles to be the kind of person you want to be friends with, smart and charismatic. Although the location does not have central air, they do have a portable air conditioning unit in the tasting area so it was quite pleasant, even on a hot summer afternoon. The tour is about 1 hour, and in that 1 hour, we got educated in the process, quizzed on our ability to identify some of the aromatics used to make the gin, asked questions, had a cocktail and three tastings, while never feeling rushed. Their gin is different, less heavy on juniper. I'm in love with the complexity of the Navy gin and look forward to creating a few cocktails with it. They are also doing an oaked sipping gin. Biggest issues were they started later than we thought so one of the people in our group had to leave before it was over, there was an epic food truck incident (this was supposed to be a Brunch event) with food running an hour late did not really have brunchy items, and they didn't clearly label on their menu that the cocktails were wine based vs. the traditional alcohol of tequila, gin, etc. The cocktails were fine but if I'd known/recalled/seen a disclaimer I would have been a bit more wary as I have reactions to certain wines and sugars.
