I personally have been involved with the school since 1992. Now with my children being involved in the educational programs it makes them the 3rd generation to attend. I could not think of a better place to help them build a foundation for the rest of their lives. read more

A superior martial arts school with a focus on children. They head instructor has been in the field for 40 years. The school has been in the same location for 20 years, so this is no fly by night school. The emphasis is on developing inner strength and personal development. Each student is allowed to progress at their own pace. Assistant black belt instructors have up to 20 years of experience and include both men and women. If you are thinking about the study of the martial arts, I recommend visiting the school. read more

It has been providing excellence in Traditional martial arts instruction and self-defense training for men, women, children and families, ages 4 years & older, at it's current location in Wickliffe, Ohio since 1985. We help students improve their self-esteem, confidence, self-respect, determination, discipline, courage, grades and social skills.

History

Established in 1984.

The Kang Do Won was founded by Grand Master Richard J. Lewis in 1984. In 1985 the Kang Do Won moved into the building it is in today. Since then, the Kang Do Won has helped thousands of men, women, children and families in their pursuit to better themselves. In 2015 Master Hotchkiss took ownership of the Kang Do Won. Master Hotchkiss has been involved in the Martial Arts for over 30 years and continues the education at the Kang Do Won. Master Hotchkiss focuses on the development of strong mind, strong heart, discipline, determination, courage, respect, self respect, inner strength and personal power. The core attributes that are sometimes missing in society today.

I began my training in 1989 with my family. The original reason for me starting in the martial arts was The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the movie Blood Sport and Star Wars. I watched these movies and shows and wanted to be like them. One of the things I grew to love through the Martial Arts is teaching and now this is one of the main reasons I still teach to this day. I love helping people and through helping people I learn way more than I ever did!

Mark offered to let us try out some classes at his school in Willoughby and, from the very first time I went, I felt completely welcome and at home. The other students were happy to practice with me and to provide little bits of advice here and there so that I could learn without it seeming overwhelming. Saturday morning the school runs a women's self defense course, which is free and immensely practical. The beauty of jiu jitsu is that you don't have to be strong - you just have to be smart. This martial art (used by the Samurai and subsequently developed in Brazil by the Gracie brothers - very interesting history) uses leverage and physics so that 100lbs girl in our class was able to beat a 200lbs guy. What I really appreciate about Mark and Ron's school is how welcoming they are. They really care about making a difference in Cleveland through jiu jitsu. They have the free women's self defense course, a fantastic kids program, and they are building a brand new facility so that their regular students will have more space to practice, locker rooms, an area where their kids can play while they take classes, and so much more. If you are interested in trying a martial art, I definitely recommend trying jiu jitsu and, moreover, trying Mark and Ron's school because you can come here knowing that you will be able to learn and practice in a welcoming environment in which everyone is focused on learning *safely* rather than trying to prove that they know more than you. Very glad that I had the opportunity to train here for a few months before I go back to Buffalo and, because of this school, I will definitely be looking for a place to train in Buffalo.

This is located off Lost Nation Road in Willoughby. A lot of good things to do here. It has some great trails for exercise or sightseeing. The best is the one that goes over the river, where you can get a good view. A popular place is the picnic areas. These are located close to the parking lots so you don't have to go far to haul things. It has a few parking lots but these are small so it these get filled up fast. This is why it's good to bring a bike here. It always is enjoyable in good weather here to walk around. It's mostly a very safe park. The best thing are the views.
