I bought 10 skewers at this philipine food stand. I think it's pretty authentic because the ingredients were some organs you would see often (but common in Asia!), like chicken heart, chicken stomatch, etc. and they just started BBQ the skewers on the sidewalk ( which I'm not sure if it's legal, lol) I didn't try other dishes. The skewers smelled awesome and the BBQ sauce on them was also appealing. I just wanted to compalin a bit that the price was the way too high. Market 707 is a stretch of sidewalk with upcycled shipping containers that offers foods, services and things in between. Filipino street food definitely stands out among the crowd of stalls. John was manning the stall by himself, and he was friendly and super patient with educating me about the various choices. All sounded amazing, we decided on the Batchoy (Filipino ramen), Turon (banana spring roll) and Calamansi iced tea. All were very reasonable prices. Now having Ramen as street food is not really easy to master, but I say it's worth it. There are benches nearby, making it possible. If you plan to take it home, it's double secured with some saran wrap over the edges of the bowl lid. I enjoyed this dish the most, a very comforting, homey feel with nice chicken broth and just the right balance of pork belly sprinkled in the bowl. The Calamansi iced tea didn't taste too different from regular to me. I'm not really an iced tea fan normally, and this didn't change my mind, but it did its trick to quench my thirst. I appreciate that it's a cool drink without ice. I hate it when other places pack their drinks with so much ice, diluting the drink. The Turon is unique and definitely worth a try. Oddly, I liked it better when we brought the leftover home when it was cold. The syrup that was drizzled on top of the banana spring roll hardened, leaving a crispy outer shell even hours after. I don't think it's a stretch to say Tita Flips is the Godfather of the entire Filipino food awakening here in Toronto. I remember my wife and I passing by her stall on Bathurst/Dundas back in 2014 and thanking our lucky stars - it was the best and most authentic Filipino food we had had since moving to Canada. It wasn't the fanciest food and was served in the most humble of streetside settings. But that's exactly what home is like - no frills, and humbly straightforward - and so that made it perfect. Fast forward to 2020 and there are thankfully many more Filipino food options (and foodtrepreneurs) in the city. But in this time of covid lockdowns and quarantines, I just wanted to support the OG. My wife and I ordered Kanto's kamayan kit, which is basically a boodle box filled with chicken adobo, lechon kawali (crispy pork belly), beef tapa (marinated grilled beef), fried bangus (milkfish), spring rolls, veggies, turon (sweet banana wrapped in sugar coated spring roll), and a whole lot of rice. All this is good for 4 people and just $50. There's a delivery zone (Eglinton to Lakeshore, Jane to Finch), but you can send Kanto's IG a note if you're outside it (we are, and they were kind enough to deliver it to our door). So definitely a good deal! Oh, and after all these years, Tita Flips still has the best lechon kawali. It's not the fanciest dish and is served in a humble tin box, but it tastes like home. Very very good kamayan feast!! They even delivered! We pre-ordered the kamayan feast and it was quite good! I believe it was around $65 and would be enough to probably feed 4 people It was a departure from what we were used to where the feast involved a combination of meat and seafood, and this was purely meat. With crispy skinned pork, chicken, beef, and lots of spring rolls The deep fried bananas covered in honey were absolutely amazing Overall, definitely satisfied but would enjoy some seafood. I recommend... hmm... literally everything on the menu. Everything she makes tastes good, guys! And you can buy this glorious bottle of special homemade vinegar, and it's only $4! It's the perfect foodie gift. This mini stall was located within a strip of international food stalls, all housed in renovated sea containers.....if you saw it, you'd be as impressed as I was about this ingenuity. Anyways, the important part, the food!! This stall had a dozen or so dishes it sells, including balut (fertilised chicken egg). We went with some chicken lumpia and turon....thoughts - Chicken lumpia: 10 for $4.43 was a good deal, it even came with a small dish of chilli sauce. The lumpia was VERY neatly wrapped, well-packed with minced chicken and some shredded carrot, crisp and crunchy. The Filipino aunty pat off residual oils from the frying so there wasn't any bad aftertastes. It did take around 10-15 minutes of waiting for our order but we used this time to take a gander at the neighboring stalls. Turon: a dessert dish from the Phillipines, composed mainly of bananas wrapped in filo pastry then deep fried. I was excited to try this dish but my experience was disappointing, the bananas were off putting and starchy. They could have done with a lot more sugar, I felt that the bananas were too underripe as they were still much too firm even after frying. These ones didn't include the jackfruit pairing with the banana which was a shame. The aunty toffeed some brown sugar syrup and set it over the Turon which I wasn't fond of either. The wait time was pushing passed the 20 minute mark which was a bit much as the rolls should have been prepped beforehand. In saying all this, for 10 Turon it was only $4. It's still worth a stop by, especially since the stall is one among a dozen on a mini international food haven full of cheap eats! ;) read more

A friend and I were strolling along looking for a snack at Market 707. I usually satisfy myself with a basic onigiri, but he was looking to show off his fave, so we stopped at Kanto by Tita Flips. First of all, Market 707 is a collection of shipping containers retrofitted as restaurant stalls at Bathurst and Dundas. There's plenty of cultural food variety to satisfy just about anyone. Note that it's all outdoor seating though. Kanto is Filipino takeout, and apparently the first of its kind in Toronto, at least according to the owner Diona Joyce, a.k.a. Tita Flips. The restaurant is aptly named Kanto, which is "corner" in Filipino. I frankly wasn't looking to chow down, so I stuck to one heavily recommended dish; the arroz caldo. This is essentially Filipino congee. Put simply, this is the best congee I've had to date. It all starts with a wonderfully seasoned, perfectly salted congee. I've had other congees that left something to be desired in the flavour department, but this congee had a rich depth of flavour. It's dressed with green onions, fried garlic bits & pork cracklings for texture and flavour, tofu, thinly sliced boiled eggs, and a subtle but wonderfully complimentary hint of lemon. Your food is made to order, and apparently Kanto sources its ingredients fresh, which absolutely comes across in the food. I can't say personally what the rest of their food is like, but if similar care is taken, I can't wait to bring a friend over for round two! read more

I don't have much expectations from a food stall on the street, as I am expecting the same pre cooked food under heat lamp or something just heat up in the microwave. Tosi Log ($6) combo with a drink - Filipino Cured Meat, Garlic Fried Rice, Fried Egg and Pickled Vegetables. Though not the most amazing thing I had but is decent and tasty at that price point. Portion is quite adequate as a meal. Calamansi Iced Tea reminds me of the Chinese sour plum drinks that helps in digestion, but calamansi seems to have other health benefits. Lola like lady which prepared our order is super nice. We were there for late lunch so there was no other people and our food was ready in 10 minute or so. I love the set up and the whole concept of these food stalls. I wish there will be more popping up around downtown area. They just remind me of the food scene in Portland, OR. read more

Probably the only place in TO you can get Balut. They give you a side of vinegar-ish sauce + salt to eat with your fetus egg, if youre into that kinda stuff. I loved it!!! I've had almost everything on the menu and the sasig fries' the only thing worth getting. The pork belly is the perfect blend of crispy skin and soft meat. Keep in mind that it gets realllyyyy busy and it's literally just one filipino grandma working in the shop so it can take a while to get your food if you don't call in before hand, but honestly the wait is worth it just to get somadat sisig fries. read more

We trekked to 707 Market from U of T to give these stalls a try and I went with Kanto. Once I saw the menu I knew it was where I'd be eating. The cook/server was extremely - *extremely* - friendly. I ordered the sisig fries (topped with grilled and marinated pig offal topped with crispy pork belly topped with spicy mayo topped with sriracha topped with scallions and crackling). They were SO good. The toppings alone would have been enough but the fries themselves were also extremely light and crispy, rather than being heavy or greasy. This stall is *not* fast food. I waited around 15-20 minutes while it was made fresh for me. While I was waiting a new batch of Turon, which are these delicious, sweet, sticky, ripe plantain filled spring rolls, came up. Once I saw them I couldn't resist (and they're so cheap!) so I bought them (including an extra she threw in for me) to snack on while she cooked my fries and man were they ever good. Wrapped some up to bring to the boyfriend and he concurs. I wasn't brave enough to try it, but this stall also has Balut - which is a duck embryo. My cousin has just returned from a year in Southeast Asia and loves them, so maybe I'll psych myself up for it another time, because I wouldn't hesitate to eat here again. I loved this - but it's getting cold. It would be cool (or rather, warm) if there was an inside eating area available at 707 Market. I ordered today at 12pm from uber eats, I had arroz caldo, batchoy, palabok, 3 cassava, and dinuguan, they are all bad. The cassava cake are not fully cooked, they are not edible. The rest taste like water. The packaging is also bad, the container lid of the palabok is so cheap and weak, it won't hold and the sauce were spilled over when I got them, and I can't close it back. It's the first time I had them, I cannot express more how I disappointed I am. There is nothing redeeming on any the item I ordered. The worst food I ever ordered for delivery, they should be taken out of Uber Eats, it's an embarrassing representation of Filipino food. read more

My roommate and I usually order takeout on Friday to help out local business during this quarantine. 2 Weeks ago we decided on Kanto! I saw their Kamayan Kit ad on Instagram and knew that it would be the perfect pick-us-up weekend treat! They also have been giving meals to essential workers in hospitals so we're more than happy to support businesses that give back! We placed our order on their website through Square - which was a quick and easy process. The order arrived within an hour, perfect for dinner time. We ordered the smaller tray (which is said to serve 1-3 people) and it was quite a hefty amount of food! It included garlic rice, various meats and vegetables. Both of us were able to have leftovers for the next day. I've only tried Kamayan once at a different location and have been dying to go back - so to be able to do this at home was awesome! The food was flavourful - with my favourite being the crispy Lechon Kawali! The order also came with dipping sauces and Turon for dessert. Overall, it was great to take a break from my home cooking (haha) and support local businesses! We will definitely be visiting Kanto once it is safe to do so! read more

So I havent had good filipino food for a while now and although La Mesa was great I couldnt compare it to typical Filipino food. When I saw this place online I knew I was going to order a ton of things in one go so I set a date for it with my SO. When the time came, we werent disappointed. In fact, we held up quite a line with the amount of items we ordered haha! The food was abundant and delicious. Everything from the rice reminded me of home cooked meals at home. I loooooveee their cassava cake. It was so moist and tasty not gummy like most. Their lechon was still crunchy and had flavor. Their Iced tea was good too! I mostly find these sweet but theirs was homemade. I couldnt find any fault in any of the dishes. And theyre such a good price too! Given it's a food stall on the street with just one lady preparing the food (most of the time), it might take quite sometime for your order to be ready. However the food is not "street food" nor re-heat in the microwave at all! Everything is made to order, very tasty with generous portion and of course, cheap! -Lechon Kawali - $7.50: The lechon kawali is pork belly pan fried until skin is crispy. Although this was supposed to be served with garlic rice and papaya slaw, I actually didn't get the slaws at all (I checked after I got home). In addition, I wish the garlic flavor in the rice was stronger, as I lovedddd the one I had at Lamesa. With that said, the pork belly was succulent and super crispy. It actually reminds me of the Chinese version, but I find the Chinese version is more salty compared to lechon. I thought the lechon sauce was okay, it was a bit sweet and sour so it wouldn't be my choice of sauce for this dish. I think a spicy sauce or fish sauce would go well with the lechon ;). -Balut - $2.50/each: Well, Balut is not for the faint-hearted, but I have had it multiple times in Vietnam when I was a kid. *Time for a balut education: it's a common and popular street food in the Philippines, Cambodia and Vietnam. Apparently some people believe balut is an aphrodisiac, but I don't know, I eat it because it's delicious. Yes essentially you are eating a developing duck fetus. Is it wrong? Up to you, I'm Asian, don't ask me that question. Depends on the "age" of the duck fetus, you can sometimes see the entire duck embryo with the feathers/wings/eyes of the duck. The eggs are hard-boiled, so you are supposed to peel the shells and slurp the juices inside the egg! Before you eat, put a pinch of salt (provided with the balut) and enjoy the egg! My best description of the egg is that the yolk has a custard texture, whereas the white part is very soft and felt like eating a liver. Honestly it just tastes like a regular boiled egg, except balut has a rich duck broth. -Palabok - $5.75: Despite how the dish resembles pad thai, the taste is extremely different. Again, where is my egg slices! I didn't want to ask as I had to wait 40 minutes for this dish, and my friend have already gotten her orders from Gushi. Despite being a noodle dish, the cornstarch noodles were light and not too filling at all! I believe they boiled the noodles and tossed with the sauce and other ingredients. I found the flavors to be really balanced, not too salty nor too sour. While some might find the sauce to be a bit.. saucy (lol), overtime I realized that is how Filipino food is supposed to be like, so I don't mind at all. Although it added some texture, I don't think the pork cracklings were needed as it didn't go well with the shrimps. I had pieces of the cracklings stuck on my teeth (lol), and it just added no flavor to the palabok. read more

The best lechon kawali! After all these years, I still haven't found another that I would willingly inhale fast enough. Always crispy and moist at the same tome, you can never go wrong! This paired with garlic rice and atchara (pickled papaya) can get me to smile ear to ear afters. Definitely my favourite stop at downtown Toronto. read more

Their online menu says there should also be a bed of offal meat below the lechon, but we didn't get any of that in our order. Overall it was an okay dish, but nothing to write home about. Went to the so called "food festival". Tickets were to be purchased at $5 a ticket. Items were around 1 to 2 tickets. Ordered 5 bbq pork skewer for 2 tickets, fish balls for 1 tickets and lechon for 2 tickets. IT WAS NOT WORTH THE WAIT. I got 1 undercooked chicken skewer instead of 5 pork. The fish balls were minimal at 5 to 6 pcs, of cold battered artifical carb meat!? And the lechon; it was all fat no crispy skin and it came with a side of garlic rice. THE RICE! was the most upsetting part of it, with an event like that you would at least think; "how can you go wrong, with rice?" With so many unsatisfying items, I was hoping the rice would fill me. NO! the it was so under cooked that the grains were CHALK WHITE with 75% of my rice serving being so undercooked thay it crunched with the first bite. It was as if they thought; let me just soak this rice for a few minutes and fluff it up, add a few fried garlic pcs and it will be all good. NO! Kanto, you had one job, that was to provide exceptional food at your event, or at least cooked rice. I understand; with so many people the wait was a bit long, trying to keep up with demands, but the rice!? The one thing that can be cooked in a RICE COOKER and you couldnt supply that? It's nice to know that a city as diverse as Toronto has a place where I can buy balut. Located near a park, its surrounded by other food stands. There is a bench nearby where you can eat it right when you get your food. The food here looks and taste very authentic. I ordered some turon and balut (just don't look at it while eating it, that's the trick!) and they tasted great. The turon was freshly fried and the balut was very warm and bigger than I expected. The service here is pretty good. There was only lady working there but was getting the orders out in a timely fashion.I highly recommend checking this place out if you're in area and you're craving Filipino food. I travelled a great distance to get to this food stall because I was amazed at their "sisig" fries (fried pig offal on fries), which was tasty and dreamy, during the T&T Night Market festival and my mouth was watering to try their "palabok" (shrimp rice noodles). So I made my way to this food stall and the lady who took my order told me that she will cook the food fresh and for someone waiting for freshly cooked food from a street vendor, that means long wait. I waited 30 mins for my food. Since there was outdoor seating and the weather was nice I decided to wait. I also ordered the "turon" (sweet plantain deep fried spring rolls). The service from the cook/attendant was warm and friendly. But when I finally got the food, I was sorely disappointed. The food lacked taste and for a street vendor with no other attraction but its food this is disastrous. I really want to endorse them for braving the food market but they have to get the taste perfectly. The noodles lacked the briny taste of dried shrimp and had an anaemic watery taste to it. Same with the spring rolls, which fell flat with a bitter starchy taste for using unripened plantain. So I leave this food stall with a good lesson learnt to never eat street vendor foods unless it came with a great endorsement from Yelp! read more

This powerhouse duo cooks up some fantastic Filipino snack food served up in plastic takeout containers so you can chow down at the outdoor public pool or on a park bench nearby. I tried the beef and rice dish with a delicious ice tea to go with, all for a combo price of $9. Not bad at all. The portion was good and the beef was salty and tasty and impossible to stop eating til it was gone. I'll go back again for sure and try some of their other many interesting items on the large menu. The choices seem more trad street food rather than the fusion items available nearby at Tito Ron's Filipino snack foods in the market. So many choices in Market 707 make this one of many assets I would miss dearly if they weren't around. We stop by fairly often, at least once a month, and still love this place. We order lumpia from here for any family gatherings and they get gobbled up in no time. I think you can get as good lumpia anywhere but I love to support this place because of the good customer service they offer. They made a mistake once, apologized and fixed it for me. I wish that was the kind of service offered everywhere but I'll take it where I can get it! The only thing stopping me from giving 5 stars is that not everything on their menu is a hit for me. It was my first time trying Filipino food outside of my boyfriend's cooking and it was such a great experience! Located at Market 707, it's a small Filipino street food vendor that offers a lot of popular dishes like lumpia, palabok, halo halo, lechon kawali, sisig fries etc. My boyfriend and I ordered the lechon kawali (roast pork), bangus (milkfish), kalamansi iced tea, and lumpia. I loved the lumpia and the milkfish. The milkfish was so flavorful and hit my salt tooth good. I was debating on getting halo halo or ube ice cream but I was already so full from the other dishes. I thought the lechon kawali was pretty solid, it was nice and crispy/crunchy and the iced tea is homemade (how I know this is because the lady used an old juice plastic container to store the tea) so that was tasty and refreshing. They all came with garlic rice but I barely touched it because the food was crazy filling. Definitely a must try because I feel like Filipino cuisine doesn't get much credit or exposure like other types of food from other countries. The little shops at Market 707 are food stalls serving top notch, often ethnic, dishes with top flavor at reasonable prices. Kanto is probably one of the originals with a Filipino menu ran by a Mother and daughter duo from Manila. What they brought over was a taste of the place they came from, the flavors of Asian and Spanish influences. The mother is there every day, I see her each time I visit while Diona is usually working on catering or preparing for festivals elsewhere, close by. The food is always made to order, so you know it's fresh. I always crave the Lechon Kawali (fried pork chunks with crackling skin) on garlic rice with pickled veg and sauce. An unbeatable combination of tender, succulent, crispy goodness. Only around $7.50! I would also encourage you to try their Lumpia (spring rolls) and Sig Sig fries, which are fries dressed to the max with chopped up pork, sauces, and other accessories. On Friday's they have a special dinner deal where you can have a bit of everything with unlimited garlic rice. We were served by a pleasant old lady who maned the entire stall by herself. She warned us that there would be a 15-20 minutes waiting and we decided to wait and ordered the lechon and the arroz caldo. For the Lechon, I saw her take a very large piece of crispy pork and put it in the fryer. The pork came out extra crispy but also at the cost of healthiness... The rice that came with it was nice and fluffy and warm (despite the cold winter) and the sauce and the pickled vegetable were great at cutting the fat, but in the very end, the fattiness of the dish prevailed and I had trouble finishing it. We had to wait extra long for the arroz caldo which is a rice based congee made with chicken, tofu and seasoned in a filipino fashion. It was nice and warm, very homey but there was some hard rice grains int he soup which shouldn't be found in congee. The whole meal came up to a little over $18 including taxes and tips and for the quality of the food, we felt that the price a bit higher than what you can find in the surroundings (kensington/chinatown) for similar (albeit not filipino) dishes. read more

Not many authentic Filipino restaurants in Toronto, Kanto is a great find. They have a fairly wide menu, which does get sold out throughout the day, so don't be surprised if items are not available during the day. Everything is made fresh, so there is a small wait time for items, but it all comes out piping hot. Definitely recommend this place if you're looking for some authentic food. Kanto offers simple, straight-forward Filipino food. I work across the street and always comes to this place when I crave Filipino food during the week. There's also another location at Yonge and Eglinton which I tried as well. Menu is simple about 15 dishes to choose from. Very affordable as well. You really get a bang for your buck. It tastes good as well. A few constructive criticism would be, I hope that the staff would be more organized and fridge would be organized and replenished with food items especially during lunch hours so that the people are not waiting for a long time. The food is cooked right when you order and that takes time which is fine but I would hope that when a certain ingredient is needed for the dish that is ordered, it will be readily available right there. read more

Let me just say this first, the food is great and the prices are amazing for the amount of food you get. I ordered Lechon on rice, Tapsilog, and 10 (mini) lumpias = $18. That's pretty awesome! Now, on to the bad. I went there on a Saturday around 6pm. Placed my order at 6:10pm, waited for almost an hour, and finally got all my orders at 7pm. I wish I was kidding, but I'm not. It took 50 minutes to get my food. There were 4 groups before me and from the looks on their faces, they had been waiting for a while too. That's my only beef with this place. Aren't food carts supposed to serve quick meals? Oh well... :( read more

FOOD: - BEST Dinuguan ever in Toronto and I think even in Philippines (it's that authentic). - Palabok is good, needs a lil improvement to become great. - Pork lumpia/rolls is also good, also needs a lil improvement to become great. Make sure to eat this while it's hot. - Tapsilog is just okay, I've tasted better ones in Philippines. - Sisig fries tastes good but TOO OILY and fatty. Fries are like coated with a lil bit of flour I think so it's crispy. The sisig needs improvement, like more soy sauce and onions, reduce pork belly parts and replace it with lean meat. SERVICE: Service is great, very friendly and warm (in person and over the phone). AMBIANCE: It's like a food truck (kinda), so it's best for take-out food. We ordered from here for take out one of the nights we spent in the Toronto area. The Tapsilog was the most decent thing we ordered and even then I felt the ribeye had been over cooked and was very hard to chew. The Phillipino ramen we ordered was not what we expected. The broth was very salty and the noodles were unfitting. We originally wanted pork Shanghai lumpia however were told they only had chicken so we settled and that was mildly decent. Overall nothing spectacular. We waited for a very long time for our food. I understand that everything is cooked to order, but I have been to places that are also cooked to order and they never have taken so long to get an order ready. Some things just need to be prepared in advance and it did not seem as though they had done so and caused us to rush through the rest of our plans for the evening which was quite upsetting. read more
