I was at the lowest point in my life and thought I would lose the opportunity to help to raise my two daughters. I was a green card holder since 2002 when I entered the US at age 20. Misguided and hanging with the wrong crowd, I was charge with multiple felony drug possession in 2006 and 2009. This is less than 5 years of being in the country which made me eligible to be placed in deportation proceedings if I was convicted. By 2012 I was convicted with two felony drug solicitation charges. These were marijuana possession, a class 6 felony and sentence to one year probation. This immediately meant that I was placed into an immigration hold and was scheduled to have my green card revoked and be deported. I hired another immigration law firm and was told that my case is difficult, but they would be able to get my deportation waved with a 70:30 chance of a positive outcome as it was at the time the Democrats in power, and they had more lenient policies towards immigration. As you may know the immigration process can take a while to get settled and coming up to the presidential election in 2016 and Donald Trump being the front runner for the Republicans my lawyer at the time informed me that I should start preparing to either take my family back to Jamaica or other countries like Portugal that have a more favorable immigration policy and has a striving economy. That law firm informed me that if the republican came into power, they wouldn't have any chance of getting my deportation filing overturned because they are much harsher policies and would use the "Reason to Believe" clause against me. This rule I was told would automatically disqualify me from being reinstated because the government would find that there is "Reason to Believe" that I am a drug dealer and as such a menace to society. I immediately thought of seeking another opinion as none of what they were saying was an option for me at that time. I went on the internet to search for immigration law and found Kanu and Associates and from the first time I walked through his door and spoke to Salomon Kanu I felt that I was in the right place at the right time. My family hired Solomon to fight my dad's immigration case last year. We were okay with the outcome of the case even if it wasn't good but We were not satisfied with his services. On my dads final court hearing there was paperwork missing and the judge would ask Solomon the lawyer specific questions but he would answer the judge with unrelated issues and at times had no idea what to say. We were expecting him to fight for our case but we pretty much ended up paying just to have him stand in court. If we had known he wasn't going to fight and have a game plan for our case we would have never hired him. read more

I hired this attorney to represent my friend in a deportation hearing and it was the WORST and most costly mistake of his life he paid him $7,500 and wanted an additional $2,000 for a waiver. My friend said that once he handed him the money his staff and Kanu himself demeanor changed, You are no longer that customer he wants to help but rather you are treated as if you are bothering him and his staff, GOD FORBID you should call his office twice in a week because in doing so you risk Kanu threatening to drop your case stating "your too demanding" oh yeah and all that money you paid him - NO REFUNDS! This is a review of what happened to us: 1. During Nov, 2011 (I know this has been a while because my husband and I have a crazy working schedule), I set up an initial 30 minutes consultation which I paid 75 dollars. I needed a immigration attorney because it was time for me to remove a temporary condition on my green-card. This is a very simple step, however, because we are so busy, we decided to hire an attorney to take care the paper work. 2. On the day of our consultation, we were waiting in the waiting room. Kanu came out, so my husband stood up and tried to greet him. He was very impatient and he did not even want to shake his hands. This was a big red flag for us. My husband looked at me and asked whether we should just leave and find a different attorney. I hesitated and said:" we already paid, and since we are already here, let's just stay." I really wished I would have listened to my husband. 3. Kanu was OK during the 30 minuets meeting. He found out that we just have a routine removing the temporary condition procedure. He only spent very few minutes asking about our information. Then he found out that I came from a country that his sister was trying to do business with. He start asking me if I can provide him with contacts, asking me about how to download iphone translation app for the language. This was 2nd red flag for me because it was unprofessional. The 3rd red flag was his attitude how he summoned his assistant to bring him his iphone so he can down load the translation app. 4. With all these red flags, I still signed the retainer agreement. Because I was so busy with my work, and I thought this was such an easy procedure that I probably only need to correspond with him very few times. 5. However, the very next morning, I did not feel good about my decision from yesterday afternoon. I kept thinking we work hard to earn our money, why should I retain some attorney that I did not feel comfortable with. Just because I am busy and did not want to take more time to look for another attorney. So I picked up the phone, called the office, and informed them that I would like to cancel the agreement. 6. The assistant told me since I no longer needed their service, they will have to charge me according to Kanu's hourly rates. She would call me back after she talked to Kanu. So in my mind, I already paid for the 30 minutes consultation. I had the consultation late in the afternoon, and I called very early in the next morning so it should not be a lot of fees. 7. It turns out that Kanu already spent 2 hours on my case. So they kept 1200 dollars out of 2000 dollars. I was very surprised and I asked them to provide me with information on he spent 2 hours already. They never did and we were so busy, so we thought to let it go and let this be an expansive lesson for us. 8. I finally decided to write what happened to us so that any one else can learn from our lesson. I also learned that Model Rule 1.5: Client-Lawyer Relationship Rule 1.5 Fees (a) A lawyer shall not make an agreement for, charge, or collect an unreasonable fee or an unreasonable amount for expenses. We had a meeting with this firm for 30 mins. The associate was helpful but not too knowledgeable. The senior partner Kanu is a good lawyer (probably), but just wasted our time regaling stories about his experience and college. He is very friendly and personable though. We did get some of the answers clarified, but the time was up pretty fast. So at the end of it, we still had some lingering questions/concerns. This lawyer is completely incompetent, rude and unprofessional. We hired this firm for a simple green card application. The process of working with them has been a nightmare. There were over 10 mistakes in our forms that we had to find and correct ourselves. Major mistakes like names, birthdays, addresses, and inconsistencies between forms. A paralegal and one of the attorneys insisted that they never received our marriage certificate, and I had to explain to them that the signed recorded marriage license that says Cerificate of Marriage on it IS our marriage certificate. Then when I was reviewing our case file, there was paperwork from another client's file in our file! When I confronted Kanu, he started berating and scolding me, telling me that there have been too many complaints from me, and not to worry about it or involve myself in it because the mistakes didn't matter. Then he tried to blame me saying that his clerk can't do her work with me standing there. All I did was proofread our files because this application is very important to us, and rather than apologize for wasting so much of our time all he can do is belittle me and blame me like I did something wrong. The legal team were very apt to gather the necessary documents requested and made a good case with the submission. Though there was a long delay with regard to a response from USCIS they kept reassuring me and following up with enquiries until the visa was finally approved. My experience working with Kanu was very poor. He was rude and unprofessional. Over a year ago my husband and I paid a $1200 retainer to have him do the first part of our application process for immigration. I was very uncomfortable with the advice he gave - which had we followed it could have put is very much in a bad position. My decision to stop working with him followed a 20 minute phone call with him where he actually screamed at me on the phone, saying I was wasting his time. I had some very valid concerns about the way he wanted to do things and he didn't like being questioned. It was appalling. The next day I called to cancel our contract with his office. Although his office never submitted our application, I never received any portion of a refund not did I ever receive an invoice from his office for the work that they had done. I feel they should have at least sent an invoice. In the end, the new counsel we found gave us better advice and was simply much more friendly and helpful and happy to answer my questions. The bad reviews on here are spot on. I met with this guy and I also saw the warning signs but due to the urgency of situation, i said let's do it. He sold me on we can get this done. I gave him almost 1000 dollars up front. BIG MISTAKE. After that week later he lost most his staff I can guess why. Never called me back or returned my calls. A week later he goes on "vacation". Finally about a month later I go to office w appointment. When I get there he says I have to go to an important meeting in Scottsdale and just left my wife and I standing there. At this point, i lost all confidence. So basically we gave this guy almost 1000 dollars and he never returned calls or even checked on us to see what was next.
