My old stomping grounds for B-ball & tennis.... It's been more than three decades since I last got on a basketball court to shoot some hoops, and it's nice to see that the Kapaolono Community Park is trying to up keep their facilities. This community park has a special place in my heart as I spent many hours here playing basketball, tennis, & baseball/softball. Kapaolono has a very large field, great for baseball & softball. Two tennis courts, & two basketball courts. They also have a swimming pool here, but I've never had a chance to use it. A few things I noticed about myself when I got back on the basketball court - 1. I noticed I had a little trouble dribbling the basketball, due to the neuropathy in my fingers. 2. I can still shoot the ball pretty well. 8 out of 10 on the freethrow line ain't too bad for an old fart like me. Lol! 3. Man, I am out of shape! If young kids asked me to join in on a pick-up game, I'd probably have to pass to prevent a heart-attack! Lol! 4. There are cracks on the basketball court, but at least the cracks are not craters! Lol! Still a great Community Park to visit & get some exercise! Gotta keep moving, to keep da old man out! read more

Great neighborhood park! There's something for everyone. Big field, court for different sports, community pool, and a playground with a slide. Parking lot is small. Street parking is the next option. Bathrooms are decent and clean. A long time neighborhood in Kaimuki that has a swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts as well as a large field for organized sports. Parking is limited but neighborhood parking will usually suffice. Back in the day they used to have summer fun, the highlight being the water hose "fight" courtesy of the fire department. Growing up around Kapaolono park was a great memory, stop by if you are in the 'hood. read more

Three and a half stars. The tennis courts need repaving as well as light bulbs replaced. One side is all dark and there were two bulbs out on the other. There are only two courts, so let's make them both count for the community please. There's a large park area where kids skateboard, play soccer, do yoga, play frisbee and whatever you can think about doing at a park. I saw a swimming pool next to the basketball courts too. Plenty of good parking and it's quiet and decent. read more

My husband and I like to search for different playgrounds to bring our Littles too. There are so many all over the island, and so many to choose from depending on where we're for the day. My mom and I decided to venture to the Kaimuki/ Kapahulu area where she grew up, and I spent some of my childhood as well. Originally, we were going to check out Paki Park, but being a Saturday, there were sooo many people, and a party going on too. So we opted to go elsewhere. We chose to go to Kapaplono Park, a park where my mom and her siblings spent a lot of time growing up. My uncle loves playing basketball here back in the day, my aunty used to swim at the pool a lot, and I attended Summer Fun here too! It was an awesome throwback coming here, and a great way to make memories with my kids, and somewhere that I made memories at as a youth. The park is pretty clean, well taken care of, and loved by so many, seeing that there were soooo many people doing so many different activities. This park has many things to do with a jungle gym, rec center, basketball & tennis courts, a swimming pool, and enormous grassy area for any number of outside activities. When I'm in the area again, I'll definitely be bringing my kids here again. They had tons of fun with all the other friendly kids and parents that were there too. read more

1500! I am going way back for this review. Kapaolono Park is the park from my childhood. I lived a couple blocks away and would spend time here when I got tired of being stuck at home. I thought my childhood to be quite boring because it was so routine. Revisited this park recently and it hasn't changed much. The park has a huge field that takes up most of the space here. There is also a kids playground, basketball courts, tennis courts and a community pool which is actually not as common as you would think in Hawaii. There are parking spaces surrounding the park. The south side of the park has partial views of Diamond Head and Waikiki. This park is also in walking distance of Kapiolani Community College. Beware that the park has poor lighting at night, so I would not recommend coming after sundown. This park makes me nostalgic as it brings back memories, good and bad. Like shooting hoops with my dad on many occasions here. Or the time in 4th grade in which a teacher dragged me into the pool (it was the 90s!). It just makes me think about how times were simpler then compared to now. Kapaolono Park in Kaimuki is a great neighborhood park. If you happen to live nearby, you should find yourself lucky to enjoy this spot. Particularly if you have kids as they will come to remember this place fondly just like I do. read more

They have 2 tennis courts, 1 basketball court, and a big grass field. I'm always trying to find parks with tennis courts and no crowd and so far, this is the place. The one thing I don't like about this park is that there's no lights. I mean, they have lights but there's no switch to turn it on. If anyone knows who I'm suppose to call/email to get some functioning lights at this park for night tennis, please let me know. read more

This is a pool review: Night Lap Swim is as of 4/30/2018, Monday & Wednesday 7:00-8:30 PM. Call (808) 733-7369 for updated hours. Kapaolono Community Park in addition to tennis and basketball courts has a 25 yard city pool. Parking for the park is hit and miss with around 50 or so stalls split between 12 avenue and Maunaloa Avenue. There is a sizable amount of street parking the surrounding residential. Entrance to the pool is on the 11th avenue side of the park. Like all other city pools, the schedule is constantly in flux, so call before going. The city regularly rearranges hours based on seasonal demand, other pools going offline or coming online, and lifeguard contracts. The pool has cubbies for your stuff, but like all city pools, it's best to leave your valuables at home or in your locked glove compartment. Recreational and lap swimming are offered, but vary during the days. During mixed recreational/lap swimming, two lanes will be allocated towards lap swimming. I recall that the deepest the pool goes is 6 feet. Like all 25 yard shallow pools; the water can get almost bath water warm during the summer as the volume of water isn't sufficient to maintain the cooler temperatures from the night. There is equipment for use, but most of it is kid sized. It's a real challenge doing free style with a half sized pull float between your legs. Lap pattern is swim up and down the same lane and it can get busy to the point where swimmers are swimming on the lines and between the lines. The showers/changing areas are in need of renovation (like so many city pools), but they do work. A few benches are placed for parents to rest while watching. I'm not a regular here as it's out of the way for me (unless Manoa is closed), but it's a nice local community pool to bring your kids or to get laps in for exercise. Sunsets here are often amazing with the purples, pinks and golds shinning in between the buildings. However, once the sun sets and the pool lights go on, well bugs. Lots of bugs. Because the over head lights are so close to the pool, the reflection draws in large numbers of winged bugs who then proceed to die....right in your swim path. Most people need more protein, but I'd prefer not to get it that way. read more

I used to live within walking distance and came to this park almost everyday with my two small (well behaved) dogs. We'd let them off leash so they could get some exercise. Sometimes other dog owners would show up and it was always good fun. One day my husband took our dogs out while I was at work and 2 people with 3 pit bulls coming from Makai side near the pool had the dogs off leash. Within seconds these dogs were lunging towards our dogs viciously barking and growling and our dogs bolted down the street with my husband frantically running after them praying they wouldn't be hit by any cars...The owners did nothing, didn't try to get their dogs or anything. So beware of people like that in this park, not only for your own dogs but children too. Can't trust people to do the right thing... The park itself is OK, just a large grassy area, playground, and the pool which is open occasionally. I find a lot of people leave their picnic trash laying around. One time there were 15-20 musubi all over the grass, another time there were fried chicken bones all over... there is also a person who sometimes sleeps under the big tree at the top of the stairs on the corner of 11th and Kilauea... I'm glad I don't live near this park anymore, I don't miss it. read more

This neighborhood park is great. There is really parking, unless you count the residential areas. Nice open space with good amenities: basketball court and tennis courts. I don't use the pool, but its a good place to spend time in, if you are tired of the beach. Right near the #3 bus line and Diamond Head is nearby. read more

This park has about 2 tennis courts and none of the lights work!! Parking stalls are really tight, but I'm glad there is a parking lot. Could be worse and NO parking lot. This is a decent park in the community of Kaimuki. I love how the tennis courts here are usually empty (good for me so I do not have to wait for an open court), but please, city council, make the lights work! I would love to play tennis past sunset! read more

This used to be a decent park, but it's currently suffering from extreme neglect. The pool is open into the evening, but the lights at the two tennis courts, a basketball court, and the baseball diamond have been out since April of 2012. In October of 2014, a city spokesperson claimed that a contract was going to be awarded in January of 2015 with a targeted completion date in early 2016. Here it is March of 2018 and still no lights. A few days ago I walked around the park to see if there were any signs of work being performed, and as best I could tell, not a thing has changed since April of 2012. Very disappointing and truly pathetic. read more

For me, as a relative new comer (2 years) in Hawaii, and even newer (6 months) living in Kaimuki 1/w mile away, this sweet little local, neighborhood park, epitomizes everything I love about this State, this neighborhood - truly a "peoples park" - walkers, dog walkers, picnickers, a ball field for organized and random baseball playing, frisbeeing. A cute little playground for cute little keikis, tennis courts, pool (what I mostly use!), basketball courts. Always in use, all local, young, helpful, polite and conscientous life guards, rousing games of b-ball right above the pool, with pounding music accompanying - I love it! All with great views of Diamond Head looming over it all! (I especially love to try to get swimming around sunset - so spectacular!). And nary a tourist in sight! Such a great gift for any by the community. This newbie loves it! Thanks especially to the ever gracious life guards! Yes, parking can be a little challengin - but never had to walk more than a block or two. 3 cheers and 5 stars for Kapaolono Community Park and Pool! read more

I feel like I stumbled upon an undiscovered gem in Kapaolono Community Park. It's much easier to refer to it as "the park on the way to KCC." While waiting for a friend who was at Diamond Head Health Clinic, I suddenly had the urge to pee. I drank a trenta very berry hibiscus which turned out to be a bad idea because I had to utilize the park's bathroom twice in one hour! When I went to the park (around 3:30PM), there was only one family. I find that sad because there are so many opportunities for fun--tennis courts, jungle gym, pool, lots of grass. The parking lots were empty, which was great because my bladder kept telling me it was alright to pee in my pants. Luckily, I didn't, and I made it into the restroom in time. Twice! read more
