This review is strictly for Cameron, our tour guide. He has set the bar for everyone else. I was amazed by his legitimate Aloha spirit (harder to come by than professed around the islands). He has the type of personality that I could see as a successful tv host on a discovery or nature channel type show. He offered a wealth of knowledge about the land, flora, fauna, history, and beliefs of Hawai'i. At every point he kept us safe, entertained, and informed. He has made Hawai'i my favorite of the islands. My only complaint about the tour has nothing to do with him, but with scheduling. I really didn't want to go to a hotel gift shop and would have preferred more time to swim or snorkel.

Went on an "elite" volcano hike bus tour with Scott and Crystal at the Volcano National Park. We had a small group with just the 4 of us and our tour guides so it was very cozy. We actually talked about true crime a lot so the conversation was fun, especially inside the very dark lava tube. They provided store brought wheat sandwiches, chips and water bottles from Costco. We were picked up from our hotel in Waikoloa even though they were in Hilo and dropped us off as well. Honestly, it wasn't very strenuous. About two 1-mile hikes on flat but rocky terrain, 2 lava tubes, and one 3-mile hike that had some uphill and downhill but you didn't need to be a marathon runner here. We stopped at the gift shops and visitor centers as well. Pretty relaxing honestly and we saw 2 rainbows. Overall, very wholesome tour of the Volcano National Park and wasn't time crunched like many other tours. Definitely took all day from 8am to about 7pm.

WE took the evening volcano tour which was an 8 hour tour. Phew! Andre was a great guide. He loves what he does and he loves the island. His knowledge of everything Hawaiian is remarkable. Take Noni fruit for example. He knew that it'stoo bitter to consume but if you get the capsules = great medicinal benefits. Hawaiians love to talk story. That was how he conducted the tour. Many stories.

Night volcano tour was amazing! The volcano is active and it was a beautiful experience. Our experience was made even better by our guides , Rich and Tiffany! Signed up for the ZIP and DIP experience. It was my first time here going zip-lining. Let's just say I was super scared at first but staff was super great. Ona, Brandon, and Ashley explained everything and assured us that it was safe and fun. Ten super stars for the staff!!!. Just had to follow the 3 simple rules: 1) refrain from touching gear 2) cannot hang upside down keep ankles safe 3) biggest rule is to have FUN!!! I rented the Go Pro feature $49 and they recorded your zip experience. I missed the white rope at the end of platform and had to be retrieved twice and Brandon was super nice and strong and helped me back on the platform. Super embarrassing but I got gorgeous views of the waterfalls and surrounding sceneries. There were a total of 8 zip lines ranging from baby short ones to the long ones. There was one where we raced each other and there was one where couples can hold hands. Plenty of photo opportunities. Just gotta remember to smile at all times and also be prepared for some booty shots as well. The most prettiest Zipline was # 4 where it overlooks a waterfall. I missed the white rope and slide backwards toward middle of the line and waited until Brandon saves me. But I got to savor the beautiful views of the waterfall. It was so peaceful. Love it!! Marcus our driver and tour guide picked me up from hotel and drove from Kona to Hilo through the middle of the Big Island. It was a nice ride to see the different climate zones on this Big Island. He educated us on the history of Hawaii and it's surrounding active volcanos and foliage. Got to see lots of eucalyptus trees, ferns, etc. st the site, I saw a few pretty peacocks and they were super cute. He's also a very good cook and gave us super tasty BBQ luncheon (chicken, ribs, coleslaw, pasta salad, and corn). There were options of drinks, beer, and champagne after your nice swim at their private waterfall. Overall, It was an AMAZING experience and I will definitely do it again! Hopefully I will get the same crew and this time I will be ready for photos instead of booty shots.

This was such an amazing experience, one thing on my bucket list was zip lining and this was for sure the place to do it at. From the beginning of getting picked up and the ride up to the top the driver was so knowledgeableabout the scenery, we even got to see baby pigs running around. Just know the ride up is a little rough it's through a dirt road so it can get pretty bumpy. The crew was super fun, made the whole experience enjoyable and fun all while keeping us safe. So keep in mind this side of the island gets a lot of rain, I made sure to bring a sweater just in case and sure enough it was dumping rain at certain times during the zip lining. But the perks of this is that you go faster on the lines and the waterfalls are crazy flowing, such a beautiful sight too see. There's a total of 8 zip lines and on the 4th one you get to stop and eat fruit or use the bathroom if needed. Bathrooms are super clean and there's plenty of benches to sit and relax on at the half point. Once done clean towels are given to wipe off and fresh cold water is served. They also have 3 stations your photos are taken when on the zip line that you can pick up at the drop off point. This place is a must try!

What an amazing Zip line adventure! First of all, we came from Kona to Hilo. We were LATE due to the fires even though we left with plenty of time. It still took us 3+ hours to get there. Mary at the check in was so kind as to get everything set up so that our 30 minute late arrival did not stop us from going on our zip line tour. Since we were leaving in a few days and the tours are booked up we would not have been able to go otherwise. Then we had a great driver that gave us fun facts and great spots to eat the entire drive up the mountain. Be prepared for a bumpy ride. Then there was the actual zipping! Wow! Our tour guides Nicole, Ona, and Emily were an awesome bunch. They really made us relax and have fun. They make you feel safe and gave us the best advice to get great views and pictures. I highly recommend taking this adventure tour with them.

Our tour guides name is Krystal and she was great (this review is only about the tour). We booked the star gazing tour with the impression that we'd be up at the top of Mauna Kea where the telescopes are. When I asked the question "how far up the mountain are we going" and Krystal said: "we're not going to the top"; the entire bus let out a sigh of disappointment. I think we were all expecting to go to the top and were collectively pretty bummed for the rest of the trip. We booked this because we were told and read that rental cars with 2 wheel drive aren't allowed beyond a specific point on the mountain and you either needed a rental car with 4 wheel drive or to go with a tour. Instead of going to the top, we pulled onto old saddle road and drive for about a mile or so until there was some room on the side of the road to pull over. Less the telescope and the tour guide Krystal I think we definitely could have done this on our own. Company provided the telescopes, sandwiches and snacks, and also coffee and coco (also provided jackets for those that didn't bring their own. Moral of the story, DO YOUR RESEARCH! We booked through Groupon and paid about $175 a head. Not sure what the price is through the tour company directly but we saw another tour company that takes you all the way to the top for $228 a head. If I had known the difference I would have paid the $228. Also would have appreciated the clarification on the groupon ad specifying that this tour takes place nowhere near the summit of Mauna Kea. Last thing, I know this review isn't the prettiest but have to give one last shout out to Krystal. She was very knowledgeable about Hilo, Hawaiian history, and the stars and definitely made sure to keep us entertained.

Do you like to get down and dirty? Looking for Adventure, with a capital A? Then Kapahokine Adventures is the place to go, located in Hilo Hawaii, they are amazing! We booked a Razor tour, on the fly and they were more than accommodating to get us going! Julie, our driver, talked great story on our trip up and down the mountain to the staging area. She put us in Jae and Va'a's capable hands and they took the best care of us! From getting us set up and ready to hit the trails it was quick and efficient. Once we got into our Razor and hitting the trails the fun was nonstop! Racing up muddy, slick hills and through deceptively deep puddles the mud was flying! We took time for a water and fruit break and then off for more mud! Had a blast in the best field of mud! Then off to the waterfall to clean up and back to home base. This Company Rocks!

Went with my family and my 6 year old. He was super excited to go until he had to go up the first bridge! It was the the worse, he cried bloody murder!!! Ona was so amazing and patient with him. It took nearly 25 minutes to get him to zip line down. She didn't give up on him, she tried everything she could and she went with him in all 8 zip lines. Our group was amazing and understanding and also cheered him on. He enjoyed it after the 3rd one. I appreciate that she didn't give up on him and we all got to enjoy the adventure. Kent was our tour guide for the 12-hour Kilauea Hike & Flow Experience. We found the deal on Groupon and decided to book after reading all the good reviews. This is a must-do activity if you're at the Big Island. We stayed on the Kailua-Kona side, but Kent was kinda enough to pick us up at 7am in the morning and drive us to the Hilo side to start our tour. It was so amazing! Kent was so knowledgeable about the history and volcanoes, its was so fun. 12 hours flew by so fast. We went to the Kaumana Caves, Lava Tree State Park, Isaac Hale Park, Black Sands Beach, Launa Mua crater, Sulfur trails, & Volcano Winery. We hiked probably around 4-5 miles at most, and we did alot of driving and sight-seeing. My husband & I absolutely loved this excursion. We would book through this company again! :)

Amazing time!! My crew was Destiny, Jesse, Dishman & Ku'ulei. Great personalities along with some stunning views. The ziplines were smooth and the equipment was new. The tour was called Zipline Through Paradise, the name is accurate . The last 2 lines are long and absolutely beautiful taking you right over waterfalls . You guys all did a great job! Great driving Destiny, backseat is the best !

There are other zip line's out there but this is definitely the best! We did all 8 lines and there were several cool waterfalls and our guides were awesome too! Our driver to and from the area, Destiny, was hilarious and super fun. Also, our three guides in the photo attached were amazing too!! We would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting the Big Island.

We did the ATV tour today with Joey, Jae, and Ben as our guides/driver. My wife and I drove a Razor and the trails were challenging enough to keep it exciting but not so difficult that we felt out of our depth driving. Beautiful vistas, great experience, and lots of mud to spread around. We highly recommend this tour. Joey and Jae were great guides. They kept the pace interesting and the conversation was lively when we stopped for breaks. Ben provided us with numerous ideas about what else we could do in town on our way out and back from the hotel. Lots of fun! read more

It was great going on an atv tour. Piilani was driving us up she made drive fun. Eddyvaa was one of the guides on it the cars are great tour was fun. The atvs were very comfortable. The only thing is that we had to go slow hence did not have our adrenaline pumping. read more

My hubby & I were celebrating our 2 year wedding anniversary and decided to do something we've never done before...ZIP LINING!!! First and foremost bought it on Groupon such a good deal! Don't forget to go through Ebates to get % cash back. I think I paid about $175 for the both of us! DEALS... Anyway the views were beautiful! The only downside to our experience was that it rained but no one is to blame for that! Thankfully they provided us with some rain jackets which came in handy because it got pretty cold. Our driver Jess was super nice and personable! I loved our tour guides even more. Dishman, Greg and Ethan kept us safe and laughing the whole time. Our group was pretty big I want to say about 10-12 of us. We even had a 70 year old couple in our group and I give them props for being so patient with them! We also had 12 year old boy who completed half the course and chickened out and left the group. Our guides were super professional about it and made us feel comfortable the whole time. They also had little challenges on each line that kept it fun for all of us. Don't even second guess it. Definitely book them if your looking to go zip lining on the big island! It's about an hour and half drive from the Kona airport. read more

Can't complain. Was pretty fun. I wouldn't have minded longer and faster runs, but overall was a great experience. Maybe lay some new gravel for the drive up ? Ride is pretty horrendous. Crew was absolutely amazing and made up for everything. read more

I did the ATV tour and it was a blast! Ken Dylan, Joey, and Jae were quite knowledgeable regarding the history and climate of Hilo and very fun and personable! The trail: What can I say? If you like riding ruts, muddy paths, and bridges and seeing scenic vistas and waterfalls, check them out. I highly recommend it. Go and get dusty/muddy!!! The best part other than the waterfalls, was teeter totter! If you're looking for some adventure and scenery, do the ATV tour. You won't regret it!!! read more

THIS IS A MUST DO!! If you are on Hilo or Kona go for a drive. We went for the Zipline, there were 8 lines, took around 3-4 hours long. The staffs were amazing Tiffany, Dylan, Leigh, and Fiona was awesome, funny, and make the Zipline very enjoyable. The line 4,7,8 was the best ones, you get to see hundred foot long waterfall, 7 and 8 was long, beautiful view if you look down of the Stream. AGAIN it is a must go, it is better to go look at Groupon for the best price. Me and my brother really enjoy this Zip lining, one of the memories will be hard to forget. read more

We went with the 3 guides named Mary (what a coincidence because we're all named Mary too!) and it was fantastic. They were all filling in for the men who didn't want to work on Saturdays, but they had told the girls if they wanted to triple their salaries, they could go on the day we went. So I'm glad these girls are making their $$$$$!! Amazing time. They called 3 times and emailed once to stress we be there at 11:15 for our 11:30 tour and we didn't end up leaving till shortly after noon. With the exception of not being able to hear our driver, the van ride there was bumpy but good. At the lines, the guides were very knowledgable, entertaining, friendly and easy on the eyes. Safety was definitely their #1 priority and we felt safe at all times. We had 9 people on tour with us and the wait time in between lines was minimal and there was always a sweet view. The zip line was very low impact, including stopping. I won the trip for 2 at a silent auction. I could never afford to pay full price and I would probably be a little disappointed if I had. If you have the money, go for it, but if you are like me on a budget, consider other options before booking. read more

We had a blast on the ATV tour today. Lots of great trails and beautiful scenery. The tour hosts did a great job and let us get a little crazy on the road. Everyone working for the tour company had great attitudes and were really friendly and helpful. Would definitely do this again and recommend this tour to our friends. read more

What an amazing adventure! Alex and Deus were incredible guides. We had three very small girls on our trip, two of whom were just at the weight limit and had trouble making it across, they quickly went out to retrieve them and the tour kept right on moving. I have ziplined in numerous locales before, and this was a great location. We sailed over waterfalls, tree canopies, with views of the ocean and two volcanoes! The equipment was sturdy and I always felt safe. I was able to fly side by side with my nephew so it was closer to sharing the experience as we went. The only recommendation I can make, if you are advertising snacks at the halfway mark, offer snacks, not just novelty items like the apple bananas, self cracking macadamia nuts and lychee. read more

This trip was by far the best experience ever! First atv then a waterfall view for bbq the crew makes and ending with Zipline with the best crew to calm you down if you have nerves with heights so happy I got to do it with my family! We did a tour of recent volcano activity near Hilo and at the Kilauea caldera. It included both a lunch near the brand new black sand beach and a wonderful barbecue meal at Volcano winery. We started at 10:45 am and got back at 7:15 pm. Our tour guide was Jesse Kiefer and he included a lot of personal side trips to a noni factory where we tasted noni juice (that tastes like blue cheese) and soursop, which tastes like pineapple with tartness added. He took us to the 2018 and 1990 eruption sites, and showed us where they were rebuilding. We hiked about 1.5 miles each way to see the Kilauea caldera. We finished with a very nice barbecue dinner and wine tasting at the Volcano Winery. It was a memorable experience and highly recommended. read more

My family and I had such a great time with the crew(A-TEAM)NICOLE,TYLER, KENDALL & ALISSON... We were a group of 5 my wife,son and his girl friend and my 76 year old mother in law. They treated us so good and really took great care of my mother in law not that she needed much help but they made her feel so comfortable and she had the best time of her life. Basically what I'm saying is if you are up in years this group will take care of you and make sure that you are having a good time. Great time swinging thru the Hilo forests! Experienced a cow road block but our driver Alison deftly navigated the well air conditioned van around the stampede. Paulina, Angi, Emily and "Not" Anthony kept us flying high through the treetops and waterfalls. At the halfway point they fed us apple bananas, macadamia nuts and longan fruit to make sure we had enough strength for the big zip which was amazing. I highly recommend this tour! It was an amazing adventure, our guide KALE was the BEST & so AMAZING, he was funny, sweet, easy going & very informative on every activitives that we did, he told us stories, he took extra time to answer all our questions & believe me there was a lot of questions for his tour of 14. He picked us up at 6:15AM in Kona where we were staying & drove us all across the island 2-1/2 hrs. to Hilo where all our activities were, he was entertaining us from the beginning at 6:15AM until he dropped us off at 9:45PM a SUPER LONG DAY for him & he came thru it all like a champ THANK U KALE! The Ziplining crew was awesome, they made sure we were all safe, they encouraged us to have lots of fun & No one has to worry about all the mechanics of anything because they would take care of it all & to jus have fun! We, me and my 3 kids, 14,11 and 5!! just finished ziplining at Kapohokine zipline through Paradise. It was a blast!! We had so much fun. I was a bit nervous but it was super safe and after the first line you can't wait to get on it again. After the 4th line we gave small break for water, longan fruit and restroom in an area with a beautiful waterfall view and peacocks. My 5 year old was a bit scared but our wonderful guide Kali rode with her and even encourged her to do line #5 by herself. She wants to come back and do it again :) The views while ziplining were amazing and our guides Ethan, Tiffany and Kali made sure we were safe the whole time. Just finished the first part of our all day tour and Wow!!! What an amazing Zipline adventure. Our wonderful guides Kendall, Ona and Destiny were very knowledgeable and made the experience unforgettable. Now Henry was our tour guide for the second and third part of our tour and he was phenomenal! He's a walking history book, sharing a wealth of knowledge and information about everything Hawaii! My wife and I did the Stellar Explorer Kona with Kapohokine Adventures. The Good: Our guide Lawrence was amazing! He knew everything about Hawaii and the Big Island and made sure we were entertained and comfortable throughout our tour. He was one of the most genuinely nice people we have ever met. The star gazing part of the tour was very cool. The skies up where we were weren't as dark as we had hoped for, not sure if it was the moon, light pollution, vog, or a combination. However, it was still good enough to see way more stars than most places in California. Astronomer/Astrologer Crystal came out and showed us everything from stars, constellations, to planets. She did an incredible job teaching us and showing us the night sky. We were able to use a telescope to see the stripes on Jupiter and the rings around Saturn! People don't get to appreciate the wonders of the night sky in big cities so it was nice to do something like this during our trip. The Whatever: The coffee farm we went to for the first part of the tour was pretty to look at but the activities there weren't that great. We got to sample one type of coffee but there was no honey or tea samples that were described in the tour description. It seemed like we were brought there just to buy products from the farm. The dinner that was provided was pretty decent but not as good as you might expect for a tour that costs $189/person. It was a buffet style spread of chicken and pork ribs which were cooked way before the dinner then reheated, a side of plain black beans probably from cans, and a slaw that was probably the best tasting item. It would have been nice to have a hot fresh dinner instead of a bunch of reheated dishes and some more variety. Also, the area of the farm where we ate was infested with mosquitoes. My wife and I got bit at least 5x each, even after spraying the bug spray that was provided. We had to constantly kill mosquitoes that were feeding on us throughout the entire time we were in the dinner area. It was so bad that there were like 6 mosquitoes that made their way into the tour van after dinner and we spent most of the drive to the star gazing location trying to kill the mosquitoes and trying to get them to fly out of the van. We would highly recommend the company to work on improving the first coffee plantation part of the tour and the dinner because the star gazing part of the tour is so much better compared to it, to the point where we would pick the option of skipping the entire first half and just do the last half if it was possible. Beyond AWESOME! We had beyond a BLAST. If you want to hear our experience read on... We wanted a real island experience but were a bit hesitant due rain in the forecast. They said they run tours unless a hurricane and we thought, hmm, this could be a mess or fun. We stopped and picked up our ponchos and trekked from Kona to Hilo. Due to having time blind family we were a bit late at meeting our check-in time. We were met with true Aloha greeting and accommodated our tardiness without complaint and a cheerful "no worries". Our first guide Campbell was a true delight. Knowledgeable and a real kind spirit to be enjoyed by our group (Tees and Adults),, We take the bumpy ride to our destination and the bumps just made the experience better in preparation of our tour. We arrive at our destination we are greeted by Eddie and Mellisa. Fabulous human beings! The guide us to our safety equipment and important safety training for the novice. Now, here is my personal view. This is not some casual, passive kind of horseback trail ride. It is as fun as you want it to be. As a self proclaimed ESTJ moderate adrenaline junky I was respectful and understood the amount of responsibility which our tour guides have. So, being a free wheeler is totally inappropriate. If you want that experience to blaze your own trails go buy your own ATV and get permission from a private property owner. Having fun is about being appropriate, respectful and just converse with your hosts. We are guests. Anyway, we totally had the liquid sunshine falling from the sky. My poncho was not just a cosmetic interference. Especially when I lifted my hood and rain water poured down my back. Upon this chilly surprise, I ripped off my poncho, and stored it on the ATV. Now, i was one with the elements. Riding last in line. Seeing puddles, running water everywhere and fresh mud calling to me. I had the pleasure of having my bride infront of me enjoying her riding, laughing and having a great time. My daughter was driving the raxzor leading the pack with her cousin side saddle. I got to see my wife and daughter PLOW through puddles, muddy water flying in their face, leaving rooster tails and I could hear the laughter over the engine noise. Smiles were in a state of Perma-Grin. Who cared about mud. They came out looking like some non-PC kereoke of Mammy with just white eyes protected by sunglasses. Taking breaks for photo-ops and natural history, agriculture and history gave us a rest for their wrist and thumbs. Our last stop was just so much fun with great interaction with Eddie and Melissa until we sadly had to return to base. Honestly, Wetter Is Better. If you are afraid of water or getting muddy, well you can do that, but just totally reduces the awesome factor of this experience. BTW, personalities might get a little tested. So, just keep your distance, enjoy the scenery and figure out your pace. I feel that I had the ability to expand my Ohana with this tour guide team. read more

We did the Lava Field Expedition with Kapohokine Adventures. Ken and Wade were our guides. Terrific guys and terrific guides. They searched the fields and found fresh lava flows. It was worth the 8 mile round trip hike to see flowing lava before my eyes. The rocks were so hot it melted the bottom of our sneakers. This hike is difficult if you don't exercise. Also, you must wear closed toe shoes with good soles. Ken was also our driver and gave a great history of the island before and after the hike. We were lucky to have both Ken and Wade. read more

My family including 3 young men looking for a thrill had a BLAST!!! We did the RAZRs. Not only was the course amazing, super muddy, wet and FUN, the guides were even more amazing!! Vaa, Zach, King and Luke made sure we were safe AND also that we had the time of our lives!! This was a tour we took through Princess cruises, I do not recommend you spend your cash here. We took their waterfall tour from Hilo. I was treated gruffly by the skinny woman in charge. I was wearing riverwalk scandals and was told that if I didn't go back to the ship for close toed shoes I would be left behind with no refund. It was pouring rain and after getting my dress shoes I was allowed on the tour. I was soaking wet and miserable the whole tour. The operators base business is ziplining where I assume their footwear policy comes from, l am a retiree that wanted a picture of a waterfall ,all the sidewalks to and from the waterfalls were paved. I was scolded and sent back to the ship unnecessarily. I was treated poorly by the tour operator. Please take a different tour, they may be good at ziplining but their customer skills are poor. read more

Lava Hike Expedition, Excellent Tour Guide (Ken) You must be in fairly good form to do a 4 1/2 mile round trip Hike. The first portion of our Hike, took us to the Ocean side, where the Lava is flowing into the water. On our second Hike, onto the Lava Tube location, it was very Hot, so please be sure to hydrate-lots of water. That was about a 1/2 mile in to get there. You can see the Lava glowing against the Lava Rocks. So Awesome!!!! We made it there and saw it all, lots of Fresh Lava Landscapes, lava flowing into the Ocean, and an actual Lava Tube with Lava flowing through it. Check out there website and inquire, about this Hike. It's a once in a lifetime thing to do, while on the Big Island of Hawaii. (Hilo side of the Big Island) read more

Ideal shoes would be hiking boots but gym shoes will work. There are steep steps going down and then uneven rocks until the cave. The cave is uneven as well. We went on the Ahiu guided lava tour about a month ago during a trip to the big island. We knew…read morethat the active lava areas were not visible from the volcano national park. so we wanted to get up close and personal with the lava. From what we could tell, this was the best, and it didn't disappoint. They take care of all the arrangements on the phone and when you show up they have a backpack, light, snacks, water, gloves, and poncho ready for you. The tour starts at 2 pm, but it's a little drive out to the start of the hike. The guides will help you find a walking stick to help you keep your balance. Now, the hike itself is totally insane, and not for the faint of heart. It's about 3 hours of hiking through the rainforest, where there is ankle deep mud, fallen trees, puddles, and a lot of up/down and switchbacks. I've got to be honest with you, this is a pretty hard hike and not for the faint of heart. We were somewhat ill-prepared, as we only had regular sneakers. I'd definitely recommend real hiking boots. Then it's about another mile on the cooled lava fields to get to an area where the lava is actively coming out. All in all, you arrive at the lava around or just after dusk. The lava itself is one of the most amazing experiences of my life. It is so hot, that once you get within about 10 feet it starts to scorch your face and arms. You can stick your walking stick in the actively flowing lava, and the tip immediately catches on fire! Amazing, just to dip a stick in liquid rock and watch as it cools to a solid. The guide themselves are totally legit. We had 2 guides for a group of about 13, with one leading the way and another bringing up the rear. We spent a fair amount of time talking to one of the guides, Tomas, a native Hawaiian who is pretty much an all around badass. When he isn't guiding tours, hunting boar, surfing, or other stuff with the company, he does mixed martial arts training and fighting. At the time of our tour, he was still undefeated. Big ups to Tomas. The worst part is the hike out. Because you're starting at about 8 pm, and it's another 4 hours of hiking, you don't get back until midnight or so. I can safely say that it was one of the most exhausting experiences I've ever had. Well worth it though. Overall, Ahiu provided us with one of the more amazing moments in my life. I'll always remember it, and I don't say that in many reviews on Yelp. Definitely do it, but bring hiking boots!

The tour was a long hike through a rainy jungle. Then you come up to the lava fields and hike to the spot where the current flows are coming up out of the ground. This tour was an absolute must and I was extremely happy that I did it. We were definitely worn out in the end, but it was all worth it. The guides were extremely friendly and polite. You could ask for anything better. I would have given this five stars if it were not for the front office.

Having stayed in 2-5 star hotels across the U.S., this property is a good example of how subjective hotel ratings can be. Hilo simply does not have the newer luxury resort inventory you find on the Kohala Coast, so don't assume another hotel is upscale because it has "Grand" in the name. I can understand the appeal of its boutique-style, active-traveler, eco-conscious, customer-friendly atmosphere, hence the skewed 5-star ratings. Our biggest disappointments were room size, cooling performance, and noise/poor acoustic privacy. I'd still give it a low 4 stars because of the location, cleanliness, Aloha atmosphere, and staff friendliness. The property offers very basic accommodations in what resembles an old Travelodge/Motel 6-type property but cleverly renovated. The owners clearly understood that with clean rooms, vinyl plank flooring, fresh paint, and updated furniture, and a hint of a Zen/Environmental/Aloha vibe, they could offer a strong alternative to Hilo's aging high-rise hotels. While there are wheelchair ramps, the property has three stories and no elevators which means you'll have to carry your luggage up the stairs for most the upper floors. Some rooms face the inlet/ocean across the street fronted by a very old looking fish pond, while most others look across to each other with a small garden areas between or the decent pool area (no hot tub.) There's free lobby coffee in a large pump dispenser since rooms lack coffee makers, plus complimentary bikes and paddleboards. A very small lagoon beach is directly across the street, with two decent restaurants within a stone's throw. Downtown Hilo is about a six-minute drive but probably not walkable for most people. Rooms are compact, and the bathrooms are tiny with no exhaust fan. The bed leaned softer than average, and the TV was smaller than most modern computer monitors. The A/C struggled with Hilo's humid climate but managed to keep the room barely cool enough for comfortable sleeping. Shower pressure and temperature were acceptable, though the showerhead sat around chin height for me at 5'11". The biggest drawback was noise and lack of sound privacy. The glass louver windows provide almost no sound insulation, so you hear everything outside your room -- kids running the halls, conversations, foot traffic, and nearby guests. Anyone outside your room could easily overhear conversations inside. There's also noticeable jet noise due to the airport proximity, though fortunately I don't recall hearing flights between 10:30 PM and 6:30 AM. Rates are typically less than the nearby aging high-rise hotels with more upscale branding (and more uneven reviews). If SCP is at least 20% cheaper than those competitors, it's probably the best value in Hilo. If it fits your budget, I would opt for the ocean view rooms with the balconies at the SCP. The hotel appeared to be finishing renovations on its last older rooms during our stay, so many of the older 1-2 star reviews are probably no longer relevant

We had a balcony which was nice, it over looked the Hotel lagoon and the park. Couldn't see the ocean but we know it wasn't far from there. The pool area is great to kick it after a day of sight seeing. Also not to far from restaurants.

We booked the Samurai Room - with its Japanese themed furnishings and an unobstructed view of Hilo Bay from the sitting room. Our girls loved having their own room and separate beds, and my wife and I enjoyed restful sleep in the king-size bed, coquí frog chirps notwithstanding! We had our private parking spot, and all major attractions were a few minutes to half an hour away. Breakfast was a bowl of fresh fruit - lichee, mango, papaya, kiwi, grapefruit, melon - along with juices, lemon-infused water, tea, and fresh-brewed coffee, followed by something more filling, like banana-macadamia pancakes, quiche, French toast, or scrambled eggs and bacon. But the best part of breakfast was the conversation - with our hosts Gay and Koa - who we had all to ourselves for three of our four mornings. We talked for 2+ hours every day about Hawaiian flora and fauna, music, arts, history, language, and culture. Gay danced the hula for us and Koa played his favorite Hawaiian songs for us. They showed us their workshop - where they teach how to make feather leis, woodwork, ceremonial masks adorned with coyote teeth, traditional weapons made with tiger shark teeth, and countless other Hawaiian artifacts. I can go on and on, but that still won't do justice to what our stay meant to our family, so I'll share photos of what our girls wrote in their guestbook. Thank you Gay, Koa, and Hilo Honu Inn for a lifetimes worth of special memories. We will be back to stay with you next time we visit Hawai'i.

Gone are the days of live-in hosts who greet you, prepare great breakfasts on the communal deck where you mingle with the other guests, and provide a sense of welcome. I get that all that can change with new ownership and especially in the wake of Covid, but the place is in need of maintenance. The huge view window in the Bamboo room we rented was filthy. Breakfast was marginal. Very sterile rent/check-in process. We are not picky travelers and prefer to be self-sufficient with meals so we brought a lovely fresh fish to grill and they no longer provide an outdoor BBQ! A disappointing stay in comparison to our past experience here.

They describe a very different place and experience. We were bitterly disappointed. It's called a bed and breakfast. This is technically true. There is a bed, and you get breakfast. If you want to be welcomed by a smiling inn keeper and served a piping hot, freshly cooked breakfast, stay somewhere else. First, there is no welcoming staff (or staff at all other than housekeeping). The property is currently managed by a company that runs multiple places on Big Island. We arrived at noon and got a message to just go to the room (it was unlocked) and grab the key. On the plus side, we did ask to check-in early at noon, and that was accommodated. We had the Bamboo room which is more private than the others. Second, the room was dirty. The coffee maker had not been cleaned. There was a bunch of coffee in the paper filter, with several dime-sized blobs of mold. The pot still had some liquid coffee in it (see picture). There was some green something or other on the nightstand. After a few hours, my wife noticed that her socks had turned black, so we walked around in sandals the rest of the time. The shower is moldy (see picture). Third, calling the breakfast uninspired is high praise. When we arrived, inside the small refrigerator in the room we found a plate of cut fruit, two muffins, some milk, two Yoplait yogurts, and a bowl with two hard boiled eggs. That was to be our breakfast for the next day. We ate the fruit, one muffin and the yogurt. The next day, the pattern repeated: a new plate of fruit appeared in the fridge, but no extra muffins (gotta finish them if you want more!), and the yogurt was replenished. That pattern repeated the third day, so that's the extent of the breakfast. (They also have some standard oatmeal packets and granola bars on the desk that looked picked over). Is the fruit plate a collection of local Hawaiian fruits like papaya or pineapple? Nope - bog-standard bananas, apples, cantaloupe, and strawberries. And since it's cut the previous day, the banana and apple start to turn brown by the morning, even though it's in the fridge with plastic wrap on it (see pictures). Oh, did I mention that our room was missing the smoke detector? It had been pulled out, so there is just a hole in the ceiling with wires hanging out (see pictures). The view is great, I will say that. Bottom line, look elsewhere. You've been warned...

My wife and I came to the Waikoloa Hilton Resort to spend a week in BEAUTIFUL Hawaii's Big Island. We decided to take the Volcano Tour, and we had a wonderful time. The tour guide is a young lady named KELSEY that was absolutely TERRIFIC! She was very friendly, personable, helpful, and quick to answer all questions. This is a tour that lasts almost 12 hours, riding in a shuttle van with other people taking the tour. She made our day very pleasant and memorable, and I am sure the two other couples that were on the tour with us would say the same about this young lady and what a nice day we all had. After being picked up from our hotel we headed south past Kailua Kona to the coffee farm to check out the growing operation, and sample some of their products. DELICIOUS! After that we headed further south and she pointed out different things to see and do while in Hawaii as we headed to the wonderful Hawaiian bakery where we had a pit stop and opportunity to buy some of the local breads they bake there. Then on around the southern tip of the island to the black sands beach where we saw sea turtles in the shallow water area just a stone's throw from the beach itself. Then off again to the Volcanoes National Park, where we were able to hike along the ridge of the Kilauea Volcano crater and see the smoke from the pit at a safe distance. We walked through a section of lava tube, had dinner at the hotel and had an opportunity to check out the gift shops for souvenirs. Then we drove further around the ridge and saw the steam vents up close, and finally to the museum scenic viewpoint a short ways further around the ridge for the closest view we would get of the volcano shortly after the sun went down. The glow of the lava is beautiful at night, and quite humbling when you consider you are standing on the rim of mother nature's (madam Pele's) power. Then on the return trip we stopped at Mauna Kea National Park to observe the stars through some of the clearest skies on the planet. We had a terrific time. We did the Volcano Adventures - Volcanos by night tour. It was a long amazing day! John was our very knowledgable and friendly guide/ driver for the day! The views from Kona Joes Coffee were fantastic while we had a fresh and delicious lunch. Next off to the Bake shop for Malasadas, which was a lovely treat to complement our journey. We visited the punalu'u black sand beach, which was so beautiful with the sparkling Ocean washing over it. The cherry on the sundae was seeing 3 green sea turtles sunning themselves upon the beach. We then travelled to the Volcano National park and walked through the Thurston Lava Tube. On the way John was giving us information about the plant life and the Volcano. He always looked out for our safety and was so friendly and easy going. We then went to Volcano House for dinner and our first glimpses of the caldera. Our dinner was delicious and the view was fabulous. After dinner a little shopping and then the glow as the darkness came in. There were so many people there but if you wait a little people move around to get different photos. The day was long but on this tour we could could relax and know that we were going to see everything that was promised, which we did. So worth it, and John made it a great day! read more

We took the all day volcano tour with Grant. He was a great guide, both entertaining and informative. We were concerned our 18 year old son would be a little bored but Grant kept him (and us) very interested with fun facts and a great sense of humor. The day was long, but very enjoyable thanks to Grant. The trail hikes were not difficult and the views were spectacular. It would have been great to see some flowing lava but that's just a timing issue. We did get to experience many firsts for us and checked off a few bucket-list items. Walking through the Thurston Lava Tube was incredible as was standing on the edge of Kilauea. This tour is a great way to pack a lot of sightseeing into one day. BTW, Grant recommended the Green Sand Beach south of Kona and that is worth the long hike, or you can pay one of the locals $10 each direction. Hike out and ride back like we did. Zipline through paradise is must visit adventure on the Big Island. James, Tiare, Gavin and Orie our zip guides made the experience more than just another tour guide. They were all exciting, comforting and fun! They were able to inform us able the culture and agriculture of Hawaii. Not only was this trip informative but they were very fun and joking people which I appreciate. Our drivers Sloan and Moku were also helpful and built up the experience. I would recommend this tour company to anyone of any age. There were two old women on our trip who had a blast! Although this zipline is somewhat long (8 lines) it is completely dueable. At no point is it too strenuous or difficult. Our guides even had jackets available for those of us who did not bring protection from the rain. Not once throughout the trip did I feel pressured or uncomfortable. They are amazing at knowing your personal comfort level. I will definitely return!!! In a nutshell, ask for Grant, he was our tour guide and he was just fantastic! (now read the rest of the review) This was our first trip to to Hawaii, we were taken there by my boss to the Fairmont Resort (which was awesome) and he kindly set up a private full day tour for all of our families. It was absolutely amazing! Not kidding, this is a once in a lifetime adventure for most people and Kapohokine Adventures made it unforgettable. We still talk about what a fantastic day it was. I must say the their are many tour and tour guides available in Hawaii, but I can't imagine that anyone puts it together better than this group. The van was clean and comfortable and our guide was able to talk over a wireless headset the entire trip out to the volcano. He literally knew everything about EVERYTHING as he had grown up on the Big Island. My kids were even impressed with his knowledge. If your booking a tour on the Big Island, trust me, you can't go wrong with these guys. read more

First time zipping for me and my whole family and had a great time. The driver kept us entertained all the way up and down the mountain. Thanks Ray and tell Fred he is fired. The guides were super professional and fun. They never broke protocol with their safety even while joking around with us and each other. Super impressed with the rescue abilities Leigh and the others had. The break was cool mid trip and I suggest bring a back pack with a lunch and a water bottle. They do provide some light snacks and offer lunch for a small additional price but sack lunch is way easier. Zipping is a lot more work than you might think and you will want that lunch. Take lots of pictures because only a few will even come close to capturing the excitement you will have on this adventure. We will return for sure thanks guys. Highlight of our honeymoon vacation!! Franzisca was our amazing tour guide and my husband and I fell in love with the other side of the island! It was a long day but we saw everything from Rainbow Falls, Hilo, a private farm where we had a delicious lunch! The black sand beach and our highlight was volcano park! The food was great the guide was amazing and we would recommend this tour to everyone that is up for adventure! Thanks Franzisca!! After our day with Franzisca we wanted to do a tour closer to our hotel at the Orchid. We went on the Gold coast tour in Kona and again our guide Rob was just as great as Franzisca! We did a walk through a cloud forest jungle and after went to great coffee farm and had a whole tour through the farm. The Big Island is our home... and we are personally invested and protective of our community. Like many, I have had some concerns about the Ziplines, however I am pleased to say that KopohoKine has considered some of the issues... We had an opportunity ( kindly extended out of an invitation from Gary; one of the owners) to experience it for ourselves. The guides were very friendly and adept at making people feel comfortable with how safe the overall system is. Portions of the zipline go over one of the most breathtaking streams on the island. Especially the 8th and final run ; a spectacular half- of -a mile span which takes you over the middle of Honolii's waterfalls and pools. Our encounter was nearly a year ago,Our friends whom we just recommended this trip to, rated this as one of their top favorite adventures. This tour was Amazing! We had sooo much fun! Our tour guide John was wonderful and extremely knowledgeable. He made the whole day fun and exciting! The 8 line zip line tour was out of this world. We saw views of the ocean, mountains, and beautiful waterfalls. All the guys on the zipline tour made our experience memorable and had us laughing all day. Thank you Josh, kiata, and kailoa u guys rock! The helicopter ride was breathtaking! The views you see are unbelievable. Scott was great! Great time in the Hilo area on an amazing zip line experience ! Pretty impressive operation, with a total of eight different zip lines are included in the tour ! - each one following the other as you make your way zipping down the mountainside. Some are over river ravines and past waterfalls, others are long and faster ! Sarah was a great lead guide - upbeat, funny, knowledgeable and very professional on all aspects of safety. One of the coolest things is zipping from one line to a high platform in the trees, and then taking off right from there to the next one, never touching the ground! Would recommend this to all ages and groups - you'll be exhilarated (maybe a bit scared, but not much!), and have a really unique experience! We just finished an epic, full day of Polaris razrs and tons of mud!! Dirty is only the beginning! We followed that with a dunk in a private pond and waterfall, absolutely stunning. From there came a scrumptious lunch by Jordyn who had the same, lovely enthusiasm and glow all day! We headed to our afternoon of ziplining through the sky, along the river and past a waterfall and the land of eucalyptus trees that stood high in the sky. It was breathtaking and each and every zip had its own personality, truly magic. That all being said; the overall hospitality and joy that radiates from each employee of kapohokine adventures was outstanding, six stars as my fiance says! An epic day, a wedding proposal and crushing macadamia nuts with the crew..lots of laughs, excitement and memories made for a lifetime. My aunt, uncle, son, and I went ziplining yesterday in the afternoon. Our guide that drove us up was amazing. He had do much info that I never knew and ended up talking my parents ear off with new information on the way home. Because of my sons age and weight he had to ride with a guide. Pono (sorry if spelled incorrect) was amazing with my 5 year old. I was unsure if my son would be scared but Pono was so awesome with him and even got him to hang by himself on some of the lines. Everyone was super friendly and always had great attitudes. Even when they had to go retrieve people. My son even said he wanted to go back the next day !! I want to say thank you to all the guides that were there, you guys made the experience 100x better. Would definitely recommend this company. read more

The zipline trip with KapohoKine was one of the first things we did on our Big Island vacation and it got things off to a great start! Sam, Matt, and Kolton were great guides! There were 5 in our group, 4 experienced zipliners and one novice (me). The views were magnificent and our guides knowledge of island vegetation, animal population, and historical events made our experience both fun and educational. I am very afraid of heights but Sam, Matt, and Kolton made me feel very secure! The zipline course was amazing. It was my first time doing anything like this, but Kendal and Gytis were very nice and were able to help me with everything and I had a great experience. Best views hands down. I will definitely recommend this to anyone who is visiting the island. I had a fun time doing the atv tour. Kaimi, Joey, and Eddie were great at navigating and making sure we didn't get stuck. It was also a lot of fun being able to run through the mud and watching the spray go everywhere from the inside and the outside. It was one of the best experiences I've had in a while. Zip lining is a must do if you are visiting the big island. The property breathtaking and the zips super fun, but the best part of the day may just be spending time with the guides. Well no, okay the best part is speeding through the air, but the second best part is the guides. Mahalo to Kali, Gytas, Leigh, and Rebekah for giving us such a humorous and safe fly through the rainforest. If I could have packed up Kali and Leigh and taken them home with me I would have, but kidnapping is illegal and they probably wouldn't have come back to Ohio willingly. What an experience! We chose the Zipline Through Paradise and it was amazing. Our driver Emily did a great job of breaking the ice on our drive to the course and made everyone comfortable and calmed nerves. She was funny and very informative about Hawaiian culture. Once we arrived at the course our guides Ashley, Nicole, and Tiffany were such a joy to be around. I'm so glad they were who we got to spend our day with! Ashley was funny and relatable. This was my first ziplining experience and the people GREG, Waylon, Dylan, and Sarah make my trip the best ever they were kind knowledgeable and some of the nicest people you'll ever meet they did everything they could to make it the best experience possible. Greg especially made my trip great when my mom couldnt continue when she was scared Greg acted as my best friend and made it even more fun and it ment alot. I had a lot of fun. It was super fun and Leigh made it really fun. I would totally recommend this place. From 1 to 10 i would rate it 10. I had the best time with my family and with the guides. This tour/trip was outstanding from start to finish! The check-in process was very smooth; the driver, Ikaika, provided a great background; and the three tour guides (Devin, Paulina, and Gystus) were awesome. The trip included ziplines over several waterfalls, and great tropical scenery, with cameras placed along several lines. Our group was smallish (7 total), with a range of ages/abilities, but the guides made everyone feel comfortable. I recommend this trip to anyone who's interested in ziplining, including people who might be a little nervous. The weather was nasty for our zipline tour but the guides took it in stride and kept a great attitude and made it fun for our family. One guide rode tandem with our small daughter when it was apparent she didn't have enough weight to make it to the end. Our daughter was very worried about that happening but they handled it deftly and allayed her fears. The one time they did have to get her she had a smile on her face as the guide brought her in with him by turning upside down and using his feet to pull them both in by walking upside down on the line. She loved that and was laughing quite a bit. The fresh macadamia nuts and island fruit where a nice touch. read more
