We did the Lava Expedition - which was a great all day excursion. The driver, Makana, was excellent, he really made us feel like his extended family and gave us lots of cultural insight on the island and it's history throughout the day. We started by driving towards the park, stopping along the way to see where the lava had stopped just short of destroying one of the towns. The hike to the ocean entry was flat, and easy - most of it is on a paved path. The lava entry into the ocean is definitely something to see, though we did not see any actual lava on the hike (the steam covered it up while we were there) - this seems to be down to the time you go. I was expecting this to be a bit more of a trek, though the one unique perk of the hike is the company has a permit to park a lot closer than you could normally (cutting off about 4 miles round trip), though you can rent a bike or pay for a ride halfway. After the park, and a picnic lunch watching the lava pour into the ocean. we visited lava tree state park, before heading to wine tasting and dinner at the Volcano Winery, which was exclusive to this company. The wine was unique and the BBQ dinner was really good. After dinner, we saw the steam vents, and the Thurston Lava Tube, which was really neat to visit at night. From the lava tube we ended the night seeing the glow at the crater - the lava bubbling and pooling into the lava lake, it's crowded there, but definitely a must see while on the big island. All in all, there wasn't anything on the excursion (aside from BBQ at the Volcano Winery) that we couldn't have done on our own. The benefit of the tour (aside from the parking at the hike to the lava entry into the ocean) is simply down to the excellent guides the company explores, their own insight and cultural knowledge, and the chance to see something along the way that you might have not thought to check out on your own. If any of these things are on your list of things to visit while on the Big Island, this is a great way to see them all in one day. My husband and I celebrated his retirement doing something that I never thought we'd do - ziplining! Being retirement age, we aren't exactly spring chickens. Combine that with being overweight and I was afraid that we'd be embarrassed and made to feel uncomfortable. Oh, was I wrong!! Emily, Tony and the other 2 staff members (sorry, I don't remember their names) were AMAZING! They were fun, very friendly and absolutely professional. Before we started our first zip, Emily let me hook up to the demo to see how it felt. That was all I needed to feel safe and secure. We had the time of our lives! Carl is the best guide!! My mom and I did the Volcano Tour on April 24, 2015. I will say that we had a very fun group which certainly helped the enjoyment of the tour - in particular when you are spending 13 hours with them. The group dynamics aside, it was a really good time we stopped at Kona Joe's, a bakery, black sand beach (complete with turtles), Thurston lava tube, steam vents, dinner at the historic volcano house and the ultimate volcano viewing from the museum. We had a historic viewing with the lava lake being visible for the first time since 1983 - so it was a wild night with tons of people trying to get a peek! Carl was very knowledgeable about all the various aspects at each one of our stops along the way from island history, plant life, etc. I really liked that the group was small, it really made the trip feel like you planned it yourself and you were not waiting on 80 other people to load up onto a bus. This would be great for single travelers because of the small group and older travelers (we had 2 over the age of 70 who kept up with the tour). I hope the company keeps the groups small I think that is what makes this company so special. I highly recommend and I am looking forward to next year! read more

We did the Heli/Zippin'/Volcano tour. Glenn was our guide. He was an awesome dude! He was extremely knowledgeable about Hawaiian history, culture, and life on the island. We learned a lot from him. He also made our experience flexible, ensuring that I could visit a music shop in Hilo. We loved ziplining and exploring the interesting plant life and the wild pigs that hang out around the zipline course. One of our guides, Jess, was super cool. I am afraid of heights, but she made me feel really comfortable. Glenn met us halfway with a modest bag lunch- I suggest getting the Italian sandwich. We also did a helicopter tour over the volcano which was cool except it wasn't what I was expecting. We expected to see lots of bright orange lava flows. Mostly it was charred black with spots of orange, but I suppose that is a good thing- the volcano wasn't erupting. The pilot was great and pointed out some whales that surfaced, which was pretty exciting, and his dogs in his backyard, which was pretty humorous. Finally, due to a helicopter flight delay, we were running a little late to dinner but we didn't feel rushed as we got to explore the lava tube and we made a special stop to look out over the volcano from a different angle and see a huge basin that had filled up with lava in 1983. The dinner at Volcano House was okay. The drinks and dessert cost extra but were not worth it! Drink the beer if you need to have an alcoholic drink. The mixed drinks were awful. Our last scheduled stop was at the Jagger Museum which was really cool. There is a lot of mythology side by side with the science of the volcano and that is right up my alley! Finally, Glenn pulled over at a naturally occurring steam vent which, even though we were tired we all got really excited about it! He also pointed out some fine strands of Pele's hair lava which was pretty cool. Glenn was a highlight of this already exciting and action packed trip. I highly recommend it. Mahalo! read more

He was the most amazing guide, informative, funny, personable, helpful, very interactive and very genuine. We arrived a little early so he took us to Rainbow Falls, an extra added excursion. The ziplining was amazing and great. The fourth and eighth line were the best in my opinion. The crew, Allison, Crystal, and Cogan, were top notch! Kept us safe and more importantly having fun! This was our first trip to the Big Island. We had some ideas about what to do, but being new and not knowing the locality we decided to take a tour to get us started. It was the best idea ever. Chris, our guide picked us for a wonderful day of adventure. First the black sand beach with a sunning turtle, then the bakery with wonderful sweet goodies, followed by a Kona coffee tour and tasting. We went thru a lava tube and then the winery with a great BBQ dinner. The night ended with the lava crater which created a beautiful glow and we could actually see some lava bubbling on top. My son and I decided to rent a kayak and SUP to paddle around Reeds bay. Makanani was such a delight! So friendly, helpful and empowered to provide excellent service. We def. got the feeling that they want locals like us to come down and enjoy. $39 flat rate for 4 hours per board/kayak. The other team members walked the equipment down to the launch for us and we made sure to purchase some sun screen while there....the day quickly went from overcast to gorgeous and the sunblock is a necessity! It started off bad. They sent us a confirmation with Kapohokine Adventure's old add! We drove all the way from Kona! Good thing we were there early. I called Kapohokine and asked what their location is. Karen or carrie was on the other line and she seemed irritated when i told her that it was very inconvenient that we didnt get a corrected address on the confirmation email. She gave her their new address and drove to them. We were there early to check it out. We (husband and 2 girls age 3 and 5 and our aunt and uncle). We were browsing through Kapohokine Adventure's store and decided to grab something to eat somewhere since it was too early (we were told to check back in at 1:20p) departure time at 130. As we were walking out, ALEX one of the stores sales person followed us asking my 5 year old daughter what she has in her hand. I told him its my daughter's blanket. He stood there as if he wanted me to show him so i opened it up while saying this blanket has San Francisco on it unless you guys have it. He looked at it saying 'i thought she grabed one of out patagonias... i thought i was gonna caught my first....' and stopped there. I told him 'she is five years old and she doesnt do that now you can apologize' he did apologize but i told him that he's not nice. We all walked out the store and had lunch somewhere. When he came back i requested to talk to a supervisor sinceni really didnt feel good about what ALEX had done. Jonna the sup quickly came out and told him everything. I felt harassed and ALEX treated us as if we were bad people! The supervisor on the otherhand was apologetic and empathized with me. Although i did not want want any compensation for what Bad ALEX had done, he dis offer to give us a tour of some kind. It was nice but i didnt take it. I only wanted to voice out what i felt --- and how their customer service made us feel. It doesnt matter how new or old the employee is, bottom line is you are in sales and you have to practice good customer service and what that guy ALEX did to my daughter or to us was plain rotten! Had i not prepaid over $700 for the tour with them, i would've cancelled it! Now lets go to the tour itself.... although i only gave three stars for the company itself because of that bad customer service experience we had, our tour guide Daniel deserves a 6! He made the whole ride fun! Sounds very knowledgeable of what he was talking about and very patient. The whole experience after we left the store was amazingly great! Seeing the lava that took over the beach, and the lava glowing from the crater of kilauea was just awesome! I would do it again if i dont have to deal with the people at the store ever again! read more

Yay! After LOTS of online research, booked the Lava Expedition & are still smiling about it. No, not "cheap" (is anything in Hawaii cheap?!!) but worth every penny. We'd use this company again in a heartbeat. First off -- JOHN O!!! or is it, John Oh?!! He was our driver & guide and he was the BEST. Right from the start, picking us up with the friendliest smile & attitude, we felt right away this was going to be a great trip...and it was. John's got a LOT of knowledge & information, he keeps it "understandable" & encourages questions. Never too technical or too advanced, we learned a lot! He also knows when to be quiet too (do you really want a guide who talks the ENTIRE time??) Lots of walking involved but I'd say its all "beginner/slightly moderate", no crazy acrobatics or scary jumps, etc...the pace is great. Food was great! Snacks & water provided, sandwich for lunch was better than expected (no, not "gourmet" but more than just a piece of lunchmeat thrown on a piece of bread)...you are not left hungry. Dinner was great! Going to the winery afterwards was also an experience we were really looking forward to (we're from Sonoma Co, CA, wine country) and it was very cool. Nice dinner, also all their tours end here so you can meet people from other tours and hear their stories. Do take the little vineyard "tour", short but informative. My only "not perfect" comment is, the tasting part was much too rushed; I mean I know they have to keep the show going but it was LITERALLY drink it NOW and a minute or 2 later, your glass is filled with the next wine, I barely had a chance to really taste it! I liked the "rose" the best (not a "true" rose, but its a light pink wine) & was surprised I liked the guava one as I usually don't like mixes like that. The pour'ers were nice & know their stuff. The owners were also very friendly. NO pressure to buy whatsoever. I'm so glad we did this tour, we're not usually tour people but this was just wonderful & I'd recommend Anyone to do this, especially if they get John O. Worth every penny! Mahalo! Oh -- be cool and if you like your tour guide, TIP them! This or ANY company! Even a few $$ or maybe a bottle of wine?! They deserve it! read more

Amazing!! My husband and I did the zipline, helicopter, and volcanoe all day tour and amazing is the best word to describe it. The guides were fun and knowledgeable. The zipline was spectacular. It was wind rushing, rain drenching, pulse increasing fun. The guides were hilarious and engaging. Safety was number one and excitement was number two. I would 100% recommend and do this again. We were lucky enough to have Glenn as our guide for the Kilauea hike n glow kona tour. From pick up to drop off at our hotel, we had a great time! Glenn's knowledge about the volcano, Hawaiian history, flora and fauna, and culture was amazing. He actively engaged all of us with sharing of both our knowledge and his. He kept an eye on all of us during a 5 mile hike down into the crater and back out. We were lucky enough to have great views of the lava at night. The spotting scope he supplied was really helpful. Overall, It was a blast, I've honestly never had a better tour guide. Plus, he knew where my home town was (no one does)! read more
