I've never in my life felt so degraded and so low in self confidence as I did leaving ace hardware in mount vernon. You can't enjoy the beauty of a store anymore without being followed. I was even asked how long I'd be looking around and given a time limit. I understand ace is independently owned so the owner of this one should be ashamed to allow the bullying of innocent customers trying to kill time before a ferry. I will never nor will I ever promote ace again. I own a property management company and we will be taking our business elsewhere as well as several other businesses. I was told when I purchased an item, after asking several times to make certain, that it would be returnable if it was not the correct color. Of course the ONLY way of knowing if it would be the correct color is by opening it. When it was determined the color was not even close to correct the store would not honor their word in refunding the item. Management is rude. Definitely will never return to this store and will make sure everyone is aware of the lack in customer satisfaction or service. read more

A while back, I was dispatched to this store to provide a service. Since I am disabled and was having a particularly difficult day, I asked my son to assist me. He and his gal arrived before I did and proceeded to wander around the store (their first time there). They noticed weird looks from the staff. A few minutes before I arrived, I received a call from my son. He told me that he and his gal were being detained by the Mount Vernon PD and had been told to stay away from this store. Upon my arrival, I spoke with Jeff, the owner. I identified myself and told him my son was there to assist me in providing the service for which I was dispatched to his store. He told me I could proceed with my service, but my family had to leave. I asked why, and was told in quite a huffy tone that it's his property and he could do what he wanted. While I agreed with him as far as his property rights, I was inquiring as to why he was going to this length with my family. He said he saw their car used in a criminal act (there are more than 1000 cars just like this one registered in Skagit County) and that he observed my family shoplifting at Coastal Supply. Of course, there was no shoplifting at Jeff's store. I contacted Kelley, the manager at Coastal. She said nothing could be further from the truth. She contacted Jeff to tell him he was mistaken, but he wouldn't have it. Now keep in mind that my family has a rather high limit credit card and no questions asked. So really, no reason to shoplift. I spoke to Jeff at length a few days after this incident. He told me how he suffered thousands in losses due to shoplifters. I agreed that this is a problem. I honestly think these jackasses should have their hands slammed in a door jamb, just so they have something to remind them of their crime. I can certainly understand anti-theft protocols and loss prevention. But the way he handled this situation was slanderous and completely out of bounds. I should mention that my family has spent over $50,000 at the Home Depot in Burlington? A tidy sum that could have ended up in Jeff's pocket if it weren't for his short sighted actions. I do prefer dealing with our local merchants rather than the big out of town corporations. But when my family gets embarrassed and slandered at a local merchant, for nothing more than browsing the store, I'll go where my money is respected. My family has never been treated this way at the Depot. They bend over backwards to assist us. Jeff, maybe next time you start profiling a potential customer, you should pay attention to the Rolex he was wearing. I doubt that you've been robbed by someone wearing a nice watch. Not that this should determine your actions. But at least you should realize that you're not in the presence of some street punk. Far from it. I think you have won the award for the first mom and pop merchant to 86 a Classical Pianist who also owns his own business. But I'm sure you couldn't be swayed by any of that, could you? More fun for you to treat young people like garbage. My advice to anyone with a young family. Don't do business here. Sending your son or daughter to this store could result in one of them ending up on the public record, trespassed off for nothing more than being young. And we wonder why Amazon and the big box stores are winning the war. read more

These are my go-to guys for repair fasteners! The fellow who assisted me recognized the size of the fastener by sight and opened the drawer I needed to find what I needed for my repair. While I was there I picked up some gardening items. As I puttered through the gardening aisles, the store cat recognized me and galloped up for a full-body pet, head to the end of his tail! Every time I go in I feel like I can get help with any question I have. The other day I brought in my string trimmer and they helped me fix the line feeder just because they could. I suppose I visit enough to get great service but the guy who helped me didn't know me at all. My only complaint is that sometimes I just want to browse and they are always offering help. Not much of a complaint. So I tried their espresso just because why not and it turns out they make a great coffee too. I guess I'll have to keep coming back to find flaws. read more

I can't say enough good things about Kaptein's Ace Hardware. I had to get some license plate bolts for my new trailer. I was helped right away by a young gentleman who took me right to them, and this is always how it goes when I walk in the door at Ace Hardware, someone helps me right away, and I have to say that I have the opposite experience at the huge box hardware store across the freeway, I swear the employees walk the other way so they don't get asked any questions, and I'm not just making that up, that is what happens to me there! The cashier was super friendly, and then I turn around and this little black cat is playing with something and tossing it all over the floor! I love cats, and it just made my day to see that little cat just making itself at home in my favorite hardware store. The entire experience just made my Saturday morning. read more

I always try to support local businesses. Their prices are higher, but the customer support is worth the difference. I bought two large bags of potting soil, then drove to the back of the store. The cashier had told me she would send someone to load it for me and I waited 15 minutes. I walked all the back to the entrance looking for help and was told someone would be right there. These guys are the best hardware store in three counties. They are friendly, helpful, and surprisingly well stocked with inventory. The staff goes out of their way to help you (unlike the two big hardware stores where they go out of their way to avoid you.) They have a better fastener department than Lowes and Home Despot combined. I just special ordered a water heater from them that will take two days to arrive. The other two quoted me between 14 to 25 days. I take my business to Kaptien's Ace any time I can. They are just south of College Way on the east side of Riverside. I always get such great service here...and they carry the coolest stuff! I needed a small screw/washer to match another on a light that broke. There must be a hundreds of different screws/sizes/metric vs. not etc. The woman who helped me was amazing. She figured out exactly what I needed in no time flat and even assembled it on my light for me! While I was waiting someone else helped me find something else that was on my shopping list. I went in there the first time because my husband asked me to pick up something. A young girl that worked there looked at me as if she hated me. She was grumpy and unfriendly. I told my husband about that. He said when his mother visited there and was treated very badly too. He is the only one that gets good treatment there. He believes that store only welcomes men. I called three places trying to find information on faucets. I'm not what you'd call "handy," so my terminology and questions are not professional at all. The fellow who answered the phone at the first place knew as little as I did, and I had no confidence that he was steering me in the right direction. Plus the price he quoted me was high. The second place I called, the guy had no time for me and just told me to come in. Then I tried one more time -- and got James at Kaptein's Ace Hardware. He took his time, he told me my options, and finally suggested a well-priced faucet that met all my criteria. My brother picked it up and three hours later I had a new faucet installed!
