One morning, I showed up right before they opened at 7:30 and there were already people lined up. The pastries here (savory and sweet) were all incredible. Some of the best we had in all of Europe. They have coffee, matcha, tea, etc. There is no seating inside, just some benches outside. When I entered Sweet I was greeted by the staff and quickly took in a few silver tables and several wooden tables with stools. I ordered a goat cheese pastry puff and cappuccino. I was a bit annoyed that rather than ring me up, allow me to sit down and bring me my cappuccino, I was made to stand and wait until my drink order was finished. As I sat down, there was a mini rush. I was glad to have a seat because Sweet wasn't meant to hold a large crowd. The goat cheese puff was good; with each bit I could taste the goat cheese, meaning there was lots of goat cheese, yummy. The puff also had large tomatoes and a bit of basil, which added a nice flavor. The crust was light and flaky and I am sure I would have enjoyed the puff even more if it had been served warm. The cappuccino was also very good, but had a bit too much foam and not enough liquid for my taste. I like just a bit of foam and lots of liquid, next time I will request it that way. Overall Sweet was not bad, I would visit again, but doubt that I'd make it my regular boulangerie.

Then I began a search of London. Could I procure Key limes and make the pie myself? That idea quickly fell flat and that's where Hummingbird Bakery appeared. Only problem was the pie. Nice as it was, every person who'd had proper Key lime pie in the past had the same reaction after tucking in: it lacked the punchy zest -- the mouth puckering tanginess -- they always associate with this dessert.

It's not that the place looks so charming (it doesn't) but rather, the sweets displayed in the window look so irresistible. I waltzed in for Vanilla Flan (£4.30; more like firm custard in a crust, very good) then sat there long enough to notice that some of the savory offerings began to look very good too. This is how I wound up eating lunch in reverse. After the Flan I went on to share a personal-sized Mushroom Pizza (with ham; £5) and a Salade Goat Cheese (£12) which was different than what I'd expected. Rather than placing fresh goat cheese into the salad itself, the cheese was warmed atop sliced toasts, then laid around the salad. Did I mention there was a ton of goat cheese? There was. Between that and the English Bacon liberally topping the salad, this was the richest goat cheese salad I'd ever had and I couldn't come close to finishing the cheese and toasts. Luckily, the salad itself was quite good and, featuring a Dijon Vinaigrette, quite French inspired. I can't really recommend anyone consume so much rich food in one sitting but I can certainly recommend a visit to Maison Ruget.
