Staff was friendly, but the building was old and run down. Absolute worst part was the walls were so think you could hear everything from your neighbors flushing the toilet to people talking outside at 4 in the morning. I stayed one night and just wanted to sleep....didn't turn out well. (MOVE THE CURTAINS BEHIND THE AC SHIELD. If you don't, your room won't cool down, and it gets HOT in those old rooms). Vending machines were a minimum stock, just candy.

So I had made reservations to stay at the Karakahl Country Inn last weekend. First of all, I had found a number of both positive and negative reviews about this place but ultimately decided to go with the Karakahl because I didn't want to spend a lot for lodging overnight the price was only $59 for a room with 2 queen beds. From what I could find there weren't any other hotels in Mt. Horeb besides the karakahl and the Village Inn. Lastly, it was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright so i'm thinking well that's kind cool huh? Okay, so upon driving up my initial impression was WOW what a dump!!! The place needs some serious exterior maintenance! *hint hint* a few gallons of paint can go a long way and the pool building looks like they may have started to do some maintenance but then abandoned it. Sorry no pool here folks. So at this point I came pretty close to turning the car around and running but didn't... The gentleman that checked us in was very nice and polite (ok some points there) and we were sent around to upper back portion to locate our room. It's very private in the back and we were pleasantly surprised to walk into a very tidy clean room. Clean sheets, bed was comfy, room had a refridgerator and the rooms opened to an inner hall that had lovely skylights it was quite nice (if only it was a wee updated) Outside all the rooms were these retro starlike light fixtures that are actually pretty interesting to look at after dark. Just a couple other things to note are that the walls are paper thin and there were a group of girls staying next door so we could hear them as if they were in our room. The shower kinda sucked my travel companion took a cold shower with great water pressure, while mine was hot with barely any water pressure. BUT all in all it served it's purpose it was an inexpensive place to stay and I'm only giving it 3 stars because of the minor negatives. Maybe the place is hurting but seriously even just a little exterior paint would do a world of difference. I can see it having been a great place at one time and has serious potential especially in that charming little town!

Our rooms had the queen bed, a desk, comfy chair, fridge, microwave, keurig coffee maker, coffee pods and room to walk around. We always have our fold up outdoor chairs with us and we had room to set one up in the room so we both had chairs to sit on and watch TV. The motel is in walking distance for most people to town. You cant take the sidewalks or take the trail behind the motel to get to just about anything in either direction. I mentioned that we were coming to hunt down the trolls and Kari left me a guide with a map in my room. Kari and Mike are great hosts! Friendly, helpful and informative, and very responsive to any question or concern. Keyless entry is great and worked great also. My only disappointment was the TV service in my room. I had local, which is not bad as I was not there to watch TV, but most channels were not clear a lot of the time, it became pixelated. My sister had streaming and local in her room so it turned out well. We will be back, thanks Kari & Mike!!

I've been golfing Deer Valley for many years, and I love it there - it's my "go to" course,…read moreespecially when I can't find a great deal on something else. First, Deer Valley is an affordable course. I love to golf, but can't afford to shell out top-shelf prices for a round. HOWEVER, Deer Valley isn't exactly a cheap "hacker's course". There's a wide variety of hole styles to keep your attention, highlighted by their signature par-3 #5 that takes you 120 yards out, but straight down to a soft green. The view is intimidating, but it's a hole you could shoot at for hours. Immediately after #5, you're challenged to drive over the rocky, steep face that you just came down. There are holes with blind tee shots over hills, hard dog-leg turns, and plenty of terrain to navigate. I haven't even mentioned hole #1 - a long par 5 up a big hill (and almost always into the wind). Once you get past that hole, the rest doesn't feel too bad. Deer Valley is extremely scenic with tee boxes overlooking vast valleys. In the fall, the colors are breathtaking. Being removed from the big city, it's one of the most peaceful courses I've been on. Keep an eye on your ball, but don't forget to take in the scenic views and watch for wildlife! It's beautiful there! The new "Valley" nine is nice, but I still like the Ridge and Prairie best. Valley is a little tighter and most of the holes run in, you guessed it, the valley... Definitely a course worth hitting. If you're a prude and want to be addressed as "Mister", have your clubs cleaned by some high school boy working for tips, go somewhere else. If you're looking for a course that is great bang for the buck, to hang out with some friends and have a great time - hit Deer Valley.

Upon arrival, it was so helpful to have our own assigned parking spot. As soon as we entered the lobby, Debbie was a delight and greeted me by name; she escorted us to our suite and showed us the amenities and answered any questions we had. The room was clean and spacious, and the grounds along the Sugar River were lovely. We were immensely pleased with our stay. The Seafood Soirée event felt hodge-podge. VIPs didn't get any sort of band to tip off the bartenders that our drinks were free for the first hour; two separate times I heard staff in other areas talking about workers getting placed behind the bar without being trained (one resulted in a coordinator having to comp a bottle of wine as the bar staff was misinformed). So the lines were long, the chairs should have been pulled away from the bar as they got in the way and people tried to sit in them. Trying to meet Andrew Zimmern as a person with manners was difficult as staff didn't even attempt to keep order and people kept budging in without waiting. The food served during the VIP hour was underwhelming. Then we get to 4 pm and walk out to the stations to find the food wasn't ready. Cue milling about. Then the two chef celebrities didn't even speak on time. We eventually left early and went back to our room. So regarding coordinating and hosting an event, they really missed the mark. We would definitely stay at the Inn again, and in fact are already talking about returning. But would we spend a few hundred dollars to attend an event there again? No.

Not all cheese in Wisconsin are worth getting excited over. Ok. That seems fair in light of their efforts. Don't hang a sign saying walkins welcomed on the sidewalk when you treat those that walk in like they're not. Our server was attentive-not quite to a fault-and responded quickly. Actually he was really nice and likely oversaw the reconciliation. The high top bar setting is good-not too loud but open and I love a kitchen view. As for the food I'll mostly ignore their cheese tower-though the pickles and mustard was stand out great. But the entrees. The haddock fish fry was perfect. Though the slaw is flavorless. Truly great fish fry. Top 5 in Dane county. Their short rib was amazing. Tender. Polenta cubes delicious. Veggies great. They both suffered from the same problem. Staging. For the fish fry the fries were at best ambient room temp. For the short rib the polenta was the same. They both lose their temp fast. So. Someone plated them first and then the meat was super temp hot at serving. Time it better-freshman error. But I stand by it. Mostly great tasting food. Really good service. If halves were allowed it be 3.5

Green County provides a nice getaway, and Albany House is the perfect base for us. There are four bedrooms on the second floor and the third floor is a suite (two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a common area). Albany isn't a well-known destination, but if you want to relax, ride your bike on the Sugar River trail, sample lots of cheeses, visit the best brewery in Wisconsin (or any combination of those things), I would recommend checking out this B&B. The breakfasts are fantastic -- enough to get you through most of the day. And now they just opened a cottage (really a vintage bungalow on the Sugar River) across the street with two bedrooms and bathrooms plus a whirlpool tub (in a separate room with a fireplace) and its own kitchen, dining room and living room. The room was clean and had a rustic modern feel. When the carpet is beige, you know they have to take care of it consistently. Everything had a plush feel. The shower had a rainfall showerhead and a handheld. There's a scent that emanates throughout the hotel and into your room. It's light and adds to the ambiance. It's also in the sheets and linen too. I guess that adds to one of the negatives I list later in that the HVAC seems to be centrally controlled. There was some very minor debris in the sink that may have been left from wiping of a dirty rag, but that was mostly it. Gym was nice and parking was plentiful and free. What I didn't like: - Mini fridge in the room had a lot of snacks and other drinks that I assume were for sale. I usually pack my own food, so those items took up some space in the fridge - I get cold easily, so I try to adjust the thermostat, but it's centrally controlled, which I've never seen... I'm assuming all of the rooms are regulated in this way... - Breakfast bar- had bare minimal which I really don't mind. I really wouldn't expect a place like this to serve you breakfast unless it was full service. Would definitely come back
