No, the food isn't the greatest thing I've ever eaten, but the location and ambiance make up for it, so a full on 5 stars. Also, we liked it so much that we went here twice! Located at The Prater amusument park, the Schweizerhaus is ENORMOUS! There is much more outdoor seating than in, and outdoor seating is actually easier to get! On our first visit, hubs had the Schweinhaxe (pork knuckle), a salad and 2 beers. I had the Schnitzel, Spargelsuppe (asparagus soup), and a coke. Hubs enjoyed his pork, and I enjoyed my Schnitzel, but the soup was outstanding! I had never had asparagus soup, and as it is a beloved springtime dish in the Germanic countries, I wanted desperately to try it. It was so creamy and the asparagus was cooked to such a tenderness, I almost wanted to get another bowl! On our second visit, we both got the Znaimer Gulasch, 2 beers, 1 coke, and a Powidltascherln. This place is a gem. Right at the entrance of Prater amusement park, this place has endless of options. The knuckle was good, crispy and great flavor. If you find yourself attending the Prater Amusement Park in the Vienna area, you should consider stopping by this biergarten. There is plenty of outdoor seating, but it was relatively packed when we went. The servers were relatively friendly, but it did take a while to be greeted, and it took close to an hour to get our food. The foot was tasty, but wasn't overly flavorful. The menu has a wide variety of Austrian/German delicacies that are relatively affordable. The patio seating was well lit, and the atmosphere lively. What can you say that hasn't been said already? First the positive: great atmosphere of an authentic and vibrant beer-garden experience in the middle of a historic and charming amusement park, the Wiener Prater. I'm not a beer drinker but I heard the beer is special and good (not carbonated with a soft foam top). Increasingly 'friendly' staff with very quick food and drink service. Secret tip for those who like traditional dishes which are not overhyped: Slovakian cabbage soup which has a delicate paprika taste and contains cured bacon (speck). Now to the slight disappointments: most importantly, the food is not that special and typically almost every dish can also be had at other Viennese restaurants. Ketchup and mustard are extra (super stingy even for Vienna). Food can be lukewarm. Not sure why: Maybe to increase customer turnover (slightly cynical hypothesis). I frequently travel to Vienna for work and have come to the prater several times to kill time. My Austrian counterpart suggested I come here with my family on my next trip. This place can get super busy with a long wait time. Best bet is to make reservations ahead of time on their website. Most of the seating is outdoors and you need to state how long you are planning on eating, so they can make adjustments. 2 hours is a good bet. Food comes out in a matter of minutes, so figure out how long it will take you to eat, when putting an end time in. Food is basic fare and the menu is in German, so look it up on your phone ahead of time. It's basically, pork knuckle, different types of sausages ( Frankfurter do not come with buns- that's a US thing). Snitzle, different types of beef tips and traditional soups. Austrians usually come here to drink beer, socialize and have basic appetizers. I'm not sure if they take credit cards ( many places don't) so bring cash just in case. If you don't have a reservation, you can usually just seat yourself. If there's space. Kids got the pork knuckle and really enjoyed it. Of note is all condiments are extra - ketchup, mustard, butter etc. As and fyi- Smoking is common place here. read more

Being that the place is huge and busy, they come and go and aren't very attentive so just be ready for that along with tons of cigarette smoke from others. The place is also pretty loud but it's fun after a few drinks. We ordered what probably most tourist order: the giant pork knuckle! Pork knuckle is HUGE! Tender, juicy meat with crispy skin. Way more than enough to feed a hungry group maybe 4. We added the freshly grated horse radish to it and mustard. We probably ate like 2/3 of the knuckle and we were way stuffed. We decided to have dinner for the amount of good reviews this place had. When we were on our way here, there was a big thunderstorm and 90% of this restaurant is outside, and of course is nicer outside too. By the time we got here, the rain has stopped but the staff was really stressed out. They were running between tables, and they shout at us saying it was not a possibility for us to have dinner. It was so rude, so unnecessary. I don't know why we decided to stay anyway and give them another chance. Cool Austrian Beer Garden to go to, located right next to an amusement park! Seats were difficult to find as we went on a busy Friday night, and the waitstaff was pretty occupied but once we got sat down they were super friendly. We got the pork knuckle, shared between two people, but recommend getting between parties of 3 or more because we could not finish it. Great price though! We also got the mustard on the side which is a must because the pork overwhelming after awhile on it own. Great prices for their beers as well! This was the recommendation of a coworker who had previously visited a few years back, and it was a great way to pass an afternoon. A little tough to find a seat at first, on a pleasant sunny day in Vienna, but we got one. They do take reservations for larger parties, but we were just 3. Their website basically says, "don't worry, we'll figure out something for you" and it worked just fine. We all got beer, we got some schweinhaxen, we got some weisswurst (even though it was afternoon, sorry, Germans and Austrians), and we got some little fried potato do jobbers that beat the pants off a potato salad or sauerkraut as a side, plus some lightly pickled peppers that were quite good with the pork. During my trip to Vienna, I asked a local at my hotel if he could suggest a good restaurant. He told me that I should go to Prater after we see the huge ferris wheel to eat at Schweizerhaus. The restaurant was very lovely, the outdoor tents and seating were relaxing and filled with people of all ages. I believe that the best time to go is when you can enjoy the outdoor seating during Spring or Summer. Huge beer garden, lots of people even on a Monday night at 10PM. It was a very fun experience but expect lots of smoking everywhere. The pork knuckle was huge for three girls. The waiter warned us it was for two people to share, but I think it was enough for 4 people. The best part was the skin, super crispy and flavorful with a nice layer of fat under it. The center of the pork knuckle, where the lean meat it, didn't have much flavor but was very tender. The skin tastes like chinese roasted pork, but crispier and thicker. The spinach potato dumplings were just cheesy spinach gnocchi, it was very good as well. The deep fried swiss cheese was really good fresh. This was my favorite, especially with some squeezed lemon, SO good. It was still good after a while but the breading gets soft. It was a great experience, they have a menu with a lot of different languages on it like English, Spanish, French, etc. Our waiter disappeared for a while when we wanted to order dessert. By the time he came back, it was 11PM and they close at 11, so we didn't get any dessert :/ But service is fine, we don't care if waiters are considered "rude", it's part of the culture in Eastern Europe and quite frankly, as long as the food comes out fast (which it always does) I am happy. Took a day trip to Prater before leaving Vienna. Lovely park. Took a ride on the famous Ferris wheel and happened upon the Schweiterhaus restaurant. Very friendly atmosphere: picnic tables in a garden setting, very Viennese, very helpful waiters who took pictures of us , provided English menus, etc. Ordered stuffed cabbage and a few beers and roast chicken and wine for my wife. If you're just visiting Vienna for a few days, make SURE you get here! This is the happiest place in the world, and has all the traditional Austrian dishes. This was the first beer garden I had ever been to. It really is like a garden of beer! The beer grows on the arms of the muscly waiters who work here. The reason they're so muscly is because they trot from table to table with enormous trays of heavy, overflowing beer mugs. Anytime you take a beer they just mark it down on the little paper they keep at your table. Our waiter told us that after the first few days of the season, his arms are always insanely sore. There are sections and sections of tables, the sections go on forever, and there are beautiful trees and bushes separating them. Most of the tables are under huge umbrellas which they expand if it's too sunny or starts raining. Everybody here is drunk, full, and merry! It's impossible to leave this place in a bad mood. I'm not sure about this, but I think it closes in the late fall and winter. It's in the Prater, a park pretty far away from the city center, but worth the 20-minute ubahn ride for absolute sure. read more

This was the great beer garden experience I've been looking for (all that was missing was a better view). Sat under the chestnut trees on a mellow Spring Sunday night in the large outdoor beer garden. The crowds in the park were very light, especially since it was about 9:00 pm. Occasionally, you'd be delighted by the shrieks of people on the high flying swing ride across the way. The service was very efficient. A waiter took a beer order right after we sat down. We placed one order for their specialty - schweinsstelze, It is one kilo of perfectly cooked pork shank. The crispy skin is amazing. Ordered the sides of shredded horseradish, which added nice zing, and the kraut salad, which was very fresh shredded cabbage in a sauce of vinegar, sugar and caraway - it was simple, but excellent. The waiters are most famous for being able to carry 10 mugs of beer on a tray in one hand and 5 stelzes on the other. They are busy and they forgot to put our order in, but it still came fast. We always order 1 stelze, 1 grill hendl (chicken), gurklsalat (cucumbers), erdapfel salat (potato salad) and krautsalat (coleslaw) plus a couple beers --- no matter if we are 2 people or 5 and it always seems to work out. If the pretzel girl is out we get one of those too. They charge you for the stelze by the kilo, and charge for all the sides and bread and even mustard so it's hard to know what the total will be until it comes, but it was about 60€ for all that. read more

In the beginning I would rate this place as 4 out of 5 for the pure reason that I had not eaten the classic pork knuckle dishes elsewhere in Austria. Once you start trying them around the country, you notice quickly how the dishes are prepared for the tourists. Dont get me wrong, the meals are good and you will not leave that place feeling unfulfilled. However, the service is slow and lousy (they really go for this Austrian waiter service) but then a few of them could turn out to be funny and really nice deep down. Afterall, they do have a tough job there serving hundreds of people all day long. In the end, if you have family or friends coming from abroad definitely go here during spring/summer. We came to the Schweizerhaus as a group of 8 guys on a stag do (although admittedly we weren't the worst group there!), without a reservation. Apparently the place is booked up months in advance, but the waiters managed to rustle up a table for us out of nowhere, and over the course of the next 3 hours I think I ate more food and drank more beer than I thought possible. The house special is roast pig leg and it's advisable to share: they weigh a kilo a piece! The waiters serve beer from an underground tank, refilled by tanker from the brewery, and will refill the glasses until you ask them to stop! All in all a brilliant experience, and one made better as we had locals from Vienna with us and they reckoned that in spite of the tourist location, it is as much loved by the locals as by the tourists... read more
