I'd rate Gasthaus Zur Eisernen Zeit four and a half stars. One of the few places that was open a Sunday afternoon. The gasthaus had a wonderful aroma as soon as we walked in. A smell of deep caramelization. We were fortunate to walk in as soon as a table left. All the other tables were occupied and many customers were sadly turned away. We opted for the classics: beef goulash and veal schnitzel. Both were excellent. Goulash had a rich earthy and savory taste. Felt like a lot of love was put into making it. Beef was tender. I requested a roll to mop up every bit of the remaining gravy. Schnitzel was super crispy, juicy, and well seasoned. It came with a side of potato salad. Drink wise, I started with an espresso with milk and then pivoted to a blonde ale. The staff was attentive and the pacing of the food was quick. Despite being busy, we did not feel rushed. read more

An overall solid experience. We walked in without a reservation at about 5pm and we're told we could have a table for an hour if that worked - we took that hour! Nice and cozy on the inside, nice ambient noise with idle chit chat from the other dinners, wait staff was very welcoming and were quick to switch over to English seeing we didn't speak German. Had a helles style draft that was refreshing and cold. We tried a celery cream soup which was warm, well bodied, and not too rich - just a bit of the celery came through. Of course we did have the schnitzel, a must with the potatoe salad - it offers a nice contrast to the fried schnitzel, we were told it's the traditional way to go and did not feel let down! The goulash was tasty, bread dumpling was interesting and complimented the beef well. Apple strudel was delightful, nice spice and tartness coupled with the sweet. A delightful way to end the meal. The ambiance was lovely, and warmly lit! We were lucky to get a table without a reservation, as it was cold and rainy in early January, so stepping into such a cozy spot felt like a treat. I ordered the cabbage pasta, but unfortunately, it wasn't for me. It's definitely a dish meant to be shared. On its own, it felt a bit overwhelming and too rich and bitter (like cabbage... but in overdrive). It was basically just a whole plate of it. Thankfully, I shamelessly sampled everyone else's dishes! Stopped in for lunch to get out of the hot sun and were thrilled with amazing pork schnitzel with salad. The food was plentiful and tasty and the service was great. The decor inside is simple but traditional and cozy. I also recommend the salad with small potatoes and cucumbers! read more

Some time after 18:00 as the market shops were winding down, we stopped in on a whim-ish and we're delighted at the speed at which the food was prepared. It was quite laid back. Wasn't crowded. Almost everyone dining were Americans. Staff was friendly and professional. Reasonable prices. read more

My husb said this place was the best goulash he had on our Austrian adventures. The service was good, the vibes were nice outside to really soak that nachtmarket energy up! Good people watching, food was good but as we walked around after, I saw so many other good options. Nice spot at nachtmarket if you want Austrian food. This is a small restaurant located in the Vienna Naschmarkt that serves homey classic Austrian fare. We made reservations on Google the morning of and snagged a 8pm booking. When we arrived there was a little card indicating our table and we were seated immediately. The restaurant is quaint and dated but has plenty of charm. The server was very polite, professional, and attentive. My wife and I both started with the beef soup. I had it with shredded pancake while my wife chose the semolina gnocchi. The soup was a decent size and was not overly salty, unlike other versions we had during our time in Vienna. I ordered the Fiakergulasch, a Viennese goulash with bready dumpling and sausage topped with a fried egg. My wife had the classic veal Wiener schnitzel. The Fiakergulasch was very hearty and filling with good size chunks of beef and plenty of flavor. The schnitzel was tasty, especially with a good sprinkling of lemon juice and went well with the cranberry sauce. The schnitzel portion was particularly generous, my wife couldn't finish it not for lack of trying. Overall, lovely experience and thoroughly enjoyed another taste of Viennese food. read more

This is a great little restaurant along Wien Market. The food was excellent, the service was great - but this dessert is seriously THE BEST dish I have ever had. Classic Austrian dessert with frozen mascarpone and apricot filling inside a traditional donut shell. This frozen ball is then placed on a wild berry and wine reduction sauce, but it doesn't end there; the apples are soaked in gin. FREAKING AMAZING!!!! Do not pass this up! read more

After a long day of walking and exploration at Schonbrunn, a date with Klimt's the Kiss, and other wonders of architecture and art, I was in a thoroughly famished mood. I was walking back towards the "central area" of the city and stumbled upon a market that had plenty of bites to eat and items for purchase. I did a quick scan on yelp and realized that there were not many places nearby with recommendations or reviews so I swapped over to tripadvisor as well to cross reference the options. Gasthaus came to be the point of choice and it just helped that it was the closest spot to grab some lunch as well. This place is very cozy and sits right dab in the middle of a market and is very unassuming. There are tables on the outside and inside. There is limited seating across the board and I saw a few people get turned away given it was raining outside and the limited seating inside. The service is quick and no frills and I personally loved the cozy atmosphere and the pink tablecloths. The prices here are extremely reasonable as well so a major plus because as I walked around the market after lunch I noticed other places seemed a bit higher for pricepoint. Despite having a fair round of Viennese cuisine the last few days I was still in love with the schnitzel, the potatoes, sausages, and goulash that we decided to just order it all cos yolo right? All of it was very good. Solid ingredients and it certainly beat our meal at Bitzinger a few days ago. The goulash was tasty and the potato salad with the schnitzel was the great compliment. Finishing all of this off with a cold die weisse was the perfect cherry on top. Honestly this is a solid place and highly recommend people to hit it up. Our food experience in Vienna was terrific, and Gasthaus Zur Eisernen Zeit tops the list! The food was delicious, the chef was able to accommodate our vegetarian, and our waiter was so friendly! Loved finding this small family run restaurant. My husband and I chose the traditional Austrian offerings of Goulash and Wiener Schnitzel with potato and green salad. Both were excellent and the waiter was very helpful. The service was very good. The place is small so either call ahead or be prepared to wait. We opted for inside because it was raining and were lucky enough to get a table. It was warm inside, but I was able to remove a jacket and sweater to make it more comfortable. After a long trip we were hungry and looking for a good Austrian dinner. We walked in and it took 5 minutes for the waitress to acknowledge us. Granted, she was the only one working the restaurants 8 tables, but when she did come up to us all she said is, "there's no space" and walked away. Gasthaus zur Eisernen is a tiny (8 tables or so), smoky (unless you can sit outside in nice weather), inexpensive spot for traditional Austrian cooking in the Naschmarkt. Since we were visiting off season, we had no trouble getting a seat on a weeknight but you'd probably want to make a reservation during busier months. The atmosphere is great, especially when it's cold outside. You certainly don't feel like you're in the middle of the city. It's warm and cozy, though I'm not a huge fan of the indoor smoking. Even with just 1-2 people lighting up when we were there, the inside gets very smoky very fast I started out with rindsuppe mit leberknodel which was pretty good - not t salty and very flavorful. My dumpling was really good too. My main was schweinebraten, which came with a bread dumpling and a large helping of kraut. The pork was tender, but I missed the "crackling" skin I'm used to on Bavarian versions. We tried a traditional dessert of schudpfnudlen (noodles with butter, sugar, poppy seed paste) which I ended up liking more than my husband did. He's more of a cake guy, but I'm glad we tried something new. Service was fast, friendly and efficient - especially considering there is one waiter for the room and a very tiny kitchen. Very cozy spot in Naschmarkt serving food that is the perfect complement to a cold winter's day. The menus are in German only but the very pleasant and patient waiter we had spent as much time as we needed to review it with us so we could order with confidence. We opted for an all-pork frankfurter over an Austrian chili, some clear broth soup with "pancake" and a basket of bread (the thin torpedoes flecked with salt in the middle were incredible). There are only 8 tables, and a couple seats at the bar, but this was a joy to experience. The only drawback is the fact that smoking is permitted and nearly everyone there during our visit took advantage of that fact. read more

I just walked in by chance on a cold winter night. It was full of interesting people some playing cards, all drinking, all friendly. It was late but they served me wonderful food. I shared a table with a young couple in love playing cards and a grouchy older man. They gave me up large plate with three flat, freshly made schnitzels and french fries. It was just what I wanted. The menu was lovely typical Austrian food. The head waiter/Barman/manager was funny and friendly too. I can't wait to go back and try the other food and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere more. A great cozy place in the Naschmarkt for some outstanding home made Viennese cuisine! Was my schnitzel better than the sauerbraten my wife ordered? Hard to say, es machts nichts! They were both fantastic! Super tender with great flavor. That tiny kitchen can really pump out some great stuff! The room itself is very cozy to say the least. The single server for the entire place moved about with ease, never leaving any of us with a dry glass. I had a delightful Austrian Pilsner, as did most everyone there. Ok, I had four of them. I wish I had five, but I don't think my wife could carry me home from there! A great location within the Naschmarkt means that surely this place is no secret. It wasn't too crowded on a Tuesday night, but was packed last weekend when we walked by. There is a good chance that we may come back while still in Vienna. Awful awful awful!!! Don't go here is you aren't local or Speak German. We sat down and ordered two beers and Vienna sausage. 15 minutes after being seated we finally received our beers. After an hour and a half of waiting we were finally ready to go. The waiter completely forgot our food. He never came back to check on us after he brought our only beer. I went inside to use the WC and asked our wait if we could get the check. We made eye contact and he refused to even acknowledged that I spoke to him. My friend and I didn't know if it was appropriate to just leav money on the table or not. After an hour and 40 minutes we had to go inside and pay ourselves. The waiter never said "sorry I forgot your food". After we paid inside and were walking away the waiter came outside yelling "thank you" at us multiple times! We did not even turn around to acknowledged his rude behavior towards us. Don't go here there are better places to Go in Vienna. read more
