I've been to a couple of classes so far with my 5 month old standard poodle puppy. Her previous obedience classes (before we moved to Seattle) had around 10 adult dogs, mostly rescues, one teacher, and one teacher's aid. Some of the dogs would bark constantly during class and while I respect their handlers for choosing adoption, it would get a bit distracting. My puppy and I also had different needs than the other, older dogs. It was good for getting my puppy to focus with distractions but at times, I felt like I wasn't getting my money's worth since the focus would primarily be on tending to the needs of other dogs/handlers. Karma Dog Training has multiple locations. This class is at the same place that my puppy goes to daycare. Parking is limited but free. Training this time around has been so different in a positive way: - Small class sizes. Besides my puppy, there has been one other regular 6 month-old puppy. There is typically another dog and one of the trainer's dogs too. - Multiple trainers. There are always two trainers (I'm horrible with names) so one of them usually leads the general training while the other assists and/or goes to the side to help the newcomer or someone with a specific question. Unlike my previous training, these two instructors have an equal level of experience so you definitely feel like you are getting lots of quality one-on-one attention. - Personalization. Each class starts off with introductions and the instructors asking what we'd all each like to work on for the day. Because my puppy and the other regular puppy are at the same age level, we have the same things we'd like to work on. If there is another dog that has a specific need (for example, if they are really anxious around other dogs), they can work with that too. When I first came to class, there was a dog that was fearful so they had her and her handler train with one of the trainers in a separated area. - Peaceful approach. I came in with my puppy on a prong collar since that was what was recommended to me by her breeder. Karma Dog Training believes in 100% peaceful approach to training so they had me switch her to a flat collar (which I had brought with me anyway). They recommended me using a Wonder Walker, which is sold at Mudbay and All the Best (and is made in Seattle). It really has made a difference. It's been effective yet so much safer for my puppy. - I like that they encourage the handlers rather than just the dogs. They enthusiastically tell us when we are doing a great job and when we seem disappointed/frustrated, they give us the right tips in the right way. There isn't any tension or judgement here and you truly do feel supported by the trainers, no matter how stubborn your dog is. I can't speak for other locations/trainers but I would definitely recommend the trainings done currently at the Seattle Canine Club! read more

When our puppy first arrived we planned on making sure that it was socialized well to avoid any issues when it grew up. We were so happy to find Karma, because there aren't many places that allow puppies to go to class before all their vaccinations. The puppy kindergarten classes he took allowed him to learn all the basics and learn to play with other puppies and humans. We used all of the training tips in daily life and were even able to build upon this foundation to teach him some fun tricks. The facility we trained at was really clean and we were never worried about our puppy catching any diseases. I had a wonderful first experience with Karma dog, but the second time not so much. Im not sure if it is because everyone happened to need a sitter around the time I needed one, I understand it was a busy time, but I was unhappy with how they handled everything. I needed a sitter/trainer for the duration of my honeymoon and had reached out to Karma Dog since I had a really good experience with them the first time. I had reached out to them a few weeks prior to my trip, everything went well, talked to Britney, came up with a plan and she told me she would look for a trainer right away. However I did not hear back. I decided to shoot her an email and did not hear back. I decided to give her a call and left a voice mail, still did not hear back. When I tried calling again apparently her number had been changed. With one week left before my trip I needed to quickly find someone else to watch my dog who was experiencing separation anxiety at our new home, meaning I needed to find someone who could stay with him 24/7 for over a week and not leave him home alone unless they are able to properly train him. Unfortunately everyone was trying to travel during that time so finding a good sitter who could be with my dog 24/7 was unsuccessful even with people on Rover giving me all their recommendations and reaching out to their friends. I was really disappointed Karma dog left me hanging, they could have at least let me know if they couldn't find someone for me so I could searched for a sitter sooner. Maybe I should have known better when the first trainer who watched my dog a few years ago told me she was quitting Karma dog due to some issues she noticed with them. read more

We Love Beth. She came and stayed with our Sadie this past August after our planned doggy boot camp got some shocking news coverage. I am so glad we didn't take her there, and the bonus is that we met Beth, she stayed with Sadie and worked with her the whole time we were gone. She brought her lovely old sweetheart of a dog with her, and the doggies seemed to get along fine. Beth is caring, conscientious, loved Sadie (who may weigh more than Beth does, honestly), and worked diligently with her. She pointed out our shortcomings as dog owners who have busy lives with understanding and worked with us to be consistent and recognize Sadie's habits -good and bad. I would have Beth back any time. James Clay spent a week with our seven month old puppy while we were on vacation. I cannot say enough good things about our experience. James sent me at least one video a day just talking about how things were going plus a longer training video. He made amazing progress with her on jumping, leash training and some anxiety issues. My boyfriend and I attended puppy class on 7/29/2017 with our 3 month old puppy. Pros: We learned 3 new commands and had a great time watching our puppy play with the other puppies. The trainer, Julia, was very knowledgable. Cons: The class took place in Julia's garage and was NOT hygienic. She did not ask to see our puppy's vaccine records (or the vaccine records of another puppy that was there for the first time). This should be standard protocol for a business like this. The area was not disinfected for parvo and she did not disinfect our shoes before we entered the garage, which the confirmation email and the website specifically said. There were a few puppy pee incidents during the class, which she quickly cleaned with a mop and dirty water - not sufficient. There were flies everywhere and no where to wash your hands after the class. The confirmation email said that there would be one hour of training AND one hour of puppy socialization, so we were looking forward to that. Unfortunately, the training and socialization happened within one hour, since there was a class immediately afterwards, so that made us think that they were trying to rip us off. The worst... when we got home we noticed that our puppy had a red rash with bumps all over her belly. It definitely was not there before, nor had she had this rash at anytime before this. I don't know if she got fleas or an infection from another dog or the unhygienic area or if she was allergic to something that was on the floor of the garage. Regardless, for this reason we will NEVER, ever bring our puppy back to Karma Dog. A good trainer is not worth risking your puppy's health. read more

We had outstanding results with our Basic Dog Obedience class with Beth Sherdell. Previous to Karma Dog Training, we had private training sessions with two different trainers. However, neither of their training methods stuck with our Lab. Beth's positive reinforcement training gave us the results we were seeking. Our Lab now walks on a loose leash, knows the difference between Wait and Stay, doesn't bolt out of his crate when we are ready to let him out, knows the drop it, leave it and touch commands. Beth is absolutely incredible. While my fiancé and I were traveling for 13 days, we hired Beth to do a "reverse board and train." It's obviously a big leap of faith to hire something to stay in your home with your dog, but it worked out better than I can imagine. First the dog stuff: Beth took our 4-month-old puppy and in a matter of 13 days taught him to sit, lay down, stay, wait (little did I know that was different than stay), drop it, leave it, not to use teeth when playing, avoiding jumping when walking in the door, loose leash walking, basic car riding manners, and he could even "roll over." If you're counting, that's TWELVE behaviors in just 13 days. She was WONDERFUL with him. When we returned, she came over the following day to show us what he learned, and it was obvious that he was so happy with her. Beth is incredible and so patient with dogs. Staying at our home: I couldn't imagine someone more respectful in our home than Beth was. When we returned, the place was spotless. Not that she is hired to clean, but she clearly went above and beyond in respecting our home. She checked in with us often enough to know that everything was okay, but not too much that we felt as if we couldn't enjoy our trip. Overall: Although reverse board and train is expensive, it is worth every penny. If you're ever going away and want your dog's behaviors taught, fixed, or maintained, I have no doubt that Beth would be a great fit. From my first call to Jeff, the owner, I knew I found the right company to help me train my new rescue dog. It is my first time adopting a dog from a city shelter and he came with a lot of challenges. Ace was found on the street in San Jose and almost died of parvovirus. His history is unknown, however it seems like he may have been abused. He is the most loving little guy, who is so insecure and afraid, yet with the help of Anastasia and the Karma Dog group lessons, he is on his way to becoming a full-fledged service/therapy dog-- quite a miracle. We LOVE LOVE LOVE Beth so much! When I signed up she didn't push me to purchase more classes than I was ready to understanding that I wanted to try it out. I did end up buying a package which I felt was a fair price. She listened to our concerns and took them seriously, asking questions and taking notes. It was so nice to have her come to our house and made it so convenient for two folks with jobs and commutes. She was a pleasure and a ton of fun to be with but I guess more importantly we have made HUGE strides with our newly adopted son (Titan). He is a 3 year old rott/lab mix adopted from the shelter a few months ago with no previous training. He was pulling on leash aggressively and listening very little to us outside of the home. After only 3 sessions with Beth and the guidance she has given us he has already made so much improvement. He listens 100% of the time at home and he is learning to walk on leash like a true gentleman. When we walking this morning I was floored that we got a few blocks in with him walking right at my side. The hour lesson would fly by with her but she summarized what we did and how we needed to practice in an email as a follow up, how helpful! It has really given us the structure we needed and we all learned so much. I can't thank Beth enough, Titan certainly misses her. We hired Beth from Karma to "stay and train" our 5 month old puppy while we were away for 4 days. It definitely takes a lot of trust to allow someone in your home but we thought it would be best to help train our puppy in his own environment. After reading a few reviews on Yelp specifically referencing Beth we gave it a shot. After 4 days our pup learned a lot and Beth was the most respectful house guest! She truly cares about dogs and is so great with them.. not only did she gift us a new harness because she didn't like ours, she also gave us a framed photo and doggie treat bags to carry around the house! But the biggest testament was the ecstatic welcome greeting our puppy gave her when she came back over for her training debrief. I'd done board and train with Beth for 3 weeks for 5 days a week. My puppy used to be crazy about biting people's feet. The first week I got her back, the result was obvious - she was able to concentrate on her toy longer and the biting stopped. After 3 weeks she is a much more well behaved puppy .
