Maybe it's still in a honeymoon phase and the novelty hasn't worn off, but there's definitely a higher level of calm and order here. Sure we visited on a Thursday afternoon but still (I won't guarantee you'll find a rock star park at the front door on a Saturday) it didn't have any markers of "The ring of fire" feels a trip to IKEA usually emits. The products, layout and the Swedish meatballs haven't changed. Pro Tip: There's no self-service check outs.

The website is awesome in so much as they have some beautiful original fabrics - stuff that could convince even those with the greatest sewing phobias to get inspired to learn. Rather than ordering online I decided to got to the Chatswood store and check out the material in the fabric flesh. It's a pokey little shop upstairs at the back of a raggedy mall. I guess because the online shop is so clean and fresh that I expected to enter a palace of imperial fabrics. Not the case. The fabrics are gorgeous but the actual store looks like any other material/sewing shop. The young shop assistant gave it a bit of that 'fashionable' edge I'd been absentmindedly seeking. Hilarious given I was looking for cheap block out fabric. I found it too in the bargain bucket. $10/metre which is pretty good. A lot of the beautiful fabrics I say were more like $50 and up. I imagine this is a hub for young designers to find pretty fabrics without having to go far. I'm feeling the urge to create... and shop ;)

Staff are attentive and interested - they want to chat through your needs at length and propose alternatives and ideas, which is useful if you're not set on a certain path. Lead times are quite long - and can stretch out. Despite enjoying the shopping experience here, we actually bought elsewhere, though paid considerably more than we would have at Dickson Avenue - just a choice we made in favour of higher quality and durability, though Dickson's products were good value for money.

There were pillows and African fabrics, Japanese china and Moroccan lamps, candles and jewellery, handwoven baskets and hand painted frames. The textures and smells hypnotized. I could see a spot for each found gem in my place at home. I need this right? I kept telling myself. The staff is friendly and the prices are affordable. They used to be located in the old Midcity centre across the road, and to my mind have never replicated the lush and comfy feel of the old store. But the staff are always lovely, and they have sales where you can pick up a real bargain. When you're stuck for a last minute gift, it's the perfect place to rush in a find something slightly out of the ordinary.

They have a great range of home decor and small gifts you can use as a joke or on a serious note. I always come here for a last minute gift idea and it's great for secret santa parties. Make sure you walk through the whole store and look at everything. There are hidden gems everywhere and you might walk away with some pretty unique gifts.
