They have something called "rice tables" aka Rijsttafel which is a preset menu. Great for sampling a little bit of each of their main dishes. Depending on what you like they have traditional samplers, vegetarian samplers, and seafood samplers. We decided to try the Ramayana which is the traditional sampler that comes with 12 sample dishes *bonus* shrimp chips and tortilla chips with three dips
Sate Ayam - grilled chicken sate on sticks with peanut sauce (peanut sauce was super tasty, satay was tender)
Daging Rendang - beef in a spicy coriander sauce (good but a little too spicy, beef kind of tasted like lamb as the texture seemed more rough and hoarse)
Daging Semur - beef stewed in soya bean sauce (ok but nothing remarkably special)
Ayam Bali - chicken fillet in a spicy Balinese sauce (flavourful, good for mixing with rice)
Ayam Kecap - chicken fillet marinated with ginger and soy sauce (ok)
Gado-gado - Indonesia traditional salad with peanut sauce (the peanut sauce that came with it was super tasty, refreshing, can taste the freshly ground peanuts)
Sayur Lodeh - mix vegetables in coconut sauce - (great, can taste the coconut milk)
Sambal Goreng Buncis - green beans in a spicy coconut sauce (good coconut flavour but a little too spicy)
Sambal Goreng Telor - boiled eggs in a spicy coconut sauce (great)
Sambal Goreng Kentang - light spiced fried potatoes - although it is listed as "light spice" it was still quite spicy
Pisang Goreng - fried banana (great dessert, bananas were served warm)
Serundeng - roasted ground coconut
Acar Campur - Indonesian sweet and sour salad
Nasi Putih (white rice) - comes in a cute basket, wooden spoon, and coconut sprinkles
The food was served on a nice long steel warming tray that spans the width of 2 tables. They served all 12 samplers at the same time and placed each sampler one by one while introducing what the dish was. Out of the 12 samplers my favourites were the sate ayam, gado gado, sambal goreng teior, psang goreng, and rice sprinkled with roasted coconut. The peanut sauce that came with it made the dishes quite flavourful and I liked being able to taste the crunchiness from the ground peanuts
What I found special and different as well was that they offer toasted coconut flakes to sprinkle on your rice. It adds a nice touch and unique flavour to your rice. I think I will always sprinkle coconut on my rice from now on :)
My least favourite although still enjoyable dishes are mainly the rendang and semur beef dishes as I found them too spicy. One of the beef dishes somewhat tasted like lamb as well as the texture seemed more hoarse and rough than usual
Water also comes in a cute tumbler glass and is infused with mint and lime
Other than that if you don't have much time in Amsterdam and want to try everything this is a great item to try. What I loved most about this place was the variety and the presentation of the food. Although the portions were small the # of dishes that came with it was enough to fill you up. It is a busy yet cozy place and the atmosphere is great as well. It gets warm inside but the Balinese decor is very nice.
