As a current student, I recommend sending your child to KAPS if you want them to feel at home in their school.

However, after one…read moremonth of our kindergartener's cries about being hurt and then witnessing it myself when I was told by my 5 year old to "come protect" him on the playground; we removed him from the Wimberley public school system. I hope ours was an isolated experience and that bullying isn't as prevalent and normalized as it seems at this school; but when your five year old is punched in the face on the second day of school and it only goes downhill from there, you have to wonder. Prior to removing our son from school we did seek help from the faculty and while they responded with ideas to help our son like, letting him go to another room rather than the playground, we felt their inability to acknowledge and rectify the actual problem was unacceptable. We left the meeting feeling like our family was the problem and our expectations of safety and supervision were not attainable without isolating our son from the rest of the students in the school. One of the reasons we moved to Wimberley were the school reviews and the student/teacher ratio being 15 to 1. My son's kinder class had 20 students to 1 this year. Multiple school staff members told me that they had too many kids to watch them all, all the time, including when sending them down the hall where there could be 4-5 of them unattended in the bathroom at one time. When asked about a rover TA or hall monitor I was told they didn't do that; but my son could be taken to the nurse to use the bathroom separately if that's what he needed so he wasn't afraid to go to the bathroom (he was hit there among other incidents). I'm happy to say that after 2 days in a school with "nice kids who don't hit me" my son is starting be okay with going school again. As it turns out, and contrary to what the individuals working at Scudder believe, it's not an unrealistic expectation for kids to be monitored closely or to think that hitting, punching, and shoving others to the ground repeatedly shouldn't be normalized. Beware of this school and please listen to your kids if they go to Scudder and tell you they are experiencing bullying. I would have kept believing it wasn't as bad as my kid was saying (what we were told by a teacher) if I hadn't sat in the parking lot, watched him be hurt and then had to stop it myself because no one was paying attention to him.

We even had a year of homeschooling in this mix. We came to Wimberley in August 2019 and have kids at Scudder AND the middle school. I have never seen a school with teachers or staff so invested in their students. I have never seen my children thrive the way they have in their short time here. They aren't just a number. The teachers ask about their weekend, notice their hair cut and take interest in what they like. They encourage them to try new things and build them up with words of affirmation daily! We have a son who has ADHD and Ms. Caldwell has been the biggest angel to him. She understands him, gives grace and is patient always. She loves him and teaches him in more ways than just academics. My faith has been restored in public schools after being here and I will forever be thankful we found this sweet and small town! We are now being relocated again and the bar has been set HIGH. I now have a different perspective for what's a "great school." It's not how new it is or how much technology they have or if they have the latest and greatest. It's not any of those things. It's how invested they are, how involved is their community, how involved are the parents? What is the class size like? How are they teaching your children and what are they teaching your children? Academics get you so far in life but teaching them to be kind, independent, hard working and so much more builds character and sets them up for a successful future AND wimberley ISD has done just this! Thank you for loving my babies and giving us the experience no other school ever has! @southernsudsandsimpleliving

If you're here, you've obviously grown tired of the rote, inflexible education of the masses based on measurements, guidelines, or even politics. If you're considering a different direction and want to know where to find forward-thinking people (educators, parents, and the kids themselves), then you have to give Appamada a good look. It's been said that we live in interesting times and, thanks to a global pandemic, that couldn't be any more true. For our family, as we tried to navigate the challenges that came along with it, we needed to find a school that would work closely our two children, separated by just under two years, and help them learn (of course), grow (definitely), and become the person they were meant to be versus an "institutional follower." Our children are nearly as different as night and day. But, at Appamada, they found individual paths to advancing their education and developing their personalities that we couldn't find elsewhere. This 'home away from home' has been their place of learning for over five years and I can see that the path they are both on, to college and beyond, has been paved nicely, with enlightened thinking, challenges big and small to overcome and learn from, and focused matriculation to help them become the best they can be, but even more importantly, the best they want to be. The staff at Appamada, across all disciplines and includes the program director, the owner, and all associated with the school are truly top-notch individuals whose sole purpose is to help the students flourish. They have repeatedly shown how much they consider and care for the individual student and have demonstrated this through their communications, program adaptation, and customized course scheduling to meet the kids where they are help them recognize where they want to go.
