Ate at this restaurant tonight and it was fabulous. Service was attentive and professional, food was delicious and the atmosphere of the restaurant was very pleasant. We will definitely be back again to try more of the extensive menu. The lamb thalis was a great introduction to a variety of unfamiliar dishes. Quick takeout order. If you like spice, they really hit the mark which was great! I ordered the chicken mehkani (butter chicken) and chicken korma. Both were good and spicy! The garlic naan we ordered was the disappointment. It was dry and brittle. Quite hard to eat honestly. read more

We had a wonderful dinner here! The food was exquisite, the service was great and the ambiance was clean and cozy. Started with chicken momo, then had chicken korma and kadai chicken, with garlic naan. Everything was absolutely delicious and I would recommend it all! The flavors in each dish were bold in the best way but also very balanced. Medium spice level packed a nice heat, and we'll probably stick with that moving forward even though we tend to like things hot. We will definitely be back! read more

We first began dining at Kathmandu when they were located on S.E. 14th in a nuch smaller location. Everything was always delicious. And today? Still always delicious. Or current favorite thing is the chicken momo - and the soup version. We will make a meal out of either of them. Flavorful, well-seasoned dumplings with a wonderful spicy dipping sauce. So good... People forget that this restaurant started in a little hole in the wall on the South side on 14th. That's how long my friends and I have been going and we moved on to the new location in Clive. Even though the new location is in a strip mall they have white linen table cloth and nice China. Their service is fast and attentive. It still serves serves Nepalese and Indian food, including naan, lamb, goat, and vegetarian dishes. It's still one of the hidden gems of our area. Very flavorable, with large portions my favorite is still lamb Briyan I love the Saffron flavored rice.(Gosht). Although most biryanis are on the milder side, this do pack a bit of a punch, the spice is real, I usually ask for no additional spice or as little as possible. The chicken curry is also one of my favorites. I also love their garlic nan and their version of pot stickers (chicken mommo) food comes out hot and fast. I still miss the Nepalese beer that they used to get but they have some Indian beer and Japanese and fountain drinks They also have a lunch buffet It's a great place with good food, wonderful staff and a nice atmosphere. read more

Tried the lunch Buffett at Kathmandu over the weekend. We have dabbled in Indian cuisine, but figured the best way to try things were through a Buffett. The dining area was roomy. We walked in and it was pretty busy, but still plenty of tables where you seat yourself. We were waited in right away where we ordered our drinks and then were shown the way to the Buffett. Plenty of food in each tray on the Buffett and looked hot and fresh. The butter naan was cooked perfect with flavor. I was very impressed with the cooked cabbage. There was no sour taste and it still had crunch. My favorite was the chicken 65, very tender and so much flavor, not spice. The chicken tikki masala was interesting because it didn't taste or look like any tikki masala I'd had before. It was good, but not as near as much flavor as the chicken 65. You can go back however many times you need and there's ice cream as well. For all the options, it was well worth the price. read more

I was introduced to this restaurant by some friends that love Indian food. The restaurant is cozy. It will quickly fill up as we sat and talked, waiting for one of our late friends to arrive. Nicely set table and yummy smells in the air. Everyone was courteous and gave us ample time to review the menu. I had lots of questions for my friends and what they were getting. Since I was interested to taste some new things my friends were happy to order what they enjoyed and share a few bites. There are options on the menu for anyone who might not be ready to dive into the unknown. I ordered the Chicken Chow Mein and Garlic Naan. My friends ordered their favorite meals and Cheese Naan, Butter Naan, and Kashmiri Naan. They are all delicious options in the Nann department. The food came out hot and delicious. The was so much food on our little table. My Chicken chow mein was really good and there was enough for take home for another meal. I enjoyed trying the Matar Paneer which is described as Indian cheese cubes tossed and sauteed with bell peppers, onions and tomatoes. I also enjoyed the steamed Chicken Momo. I love Indian Food and am always looking for new restaurants to eat at so I was eager to try Kathmandu, a gem recommended by a fellow Yelper. Although our server was quiet, the service was great! The server ensured we had drink refills throughout the meal. Inside the restaurant was quiet and clean! Although not too big inside, the seating was plenty for a Saturday evening. Eager to try my favorite Indian dish, I opted for the Chicken Vindaloo but the spice level 3 wasn't very spicy and fell short of my expectations. Next time I will go higher than spice level 3. I tried the Lamb Sekuwa, and I still am not a fan of lamb. I look forward to trying something else next time I visit! read more

02/11/2023 We stopped back again last night with our son and again enjoyed the experience. I'm also happy to report that they made improvements following my initial review regarding poor lighting (and clutter) in the restaurant. The lighting was much better, enabling me to take some better-quality pictures (see below and notice the difference between the old and new). From this, I increased the Atmosphere rating to a 4*. We ordered Lamb Curry (see picture), Chef Special Grill Platter (see picture) and Coconut Chicken Curry (see picture) along with Garlic & Butter Naan (see picture). We really enjoyed all of them - with the Chef Special Grill Platter providing the most food (including full chicken drumsticks) and the Coconut Chicken Curry having the best flavor (even though it my son ordered mild and I prefer spicy). I ordered the Lamb Curry as Hot on the spicy level and my wife ordered the Chef Special Grill Platter as Medium...but I'm suspicious that they mixed those two up, as hers was the spiciest at the table and I ordered extra spice for the Lamb Curry. Service was good for drink orders and food orders as well as a follow up shortly after we were served to check on spice level (and bring more spice...). Following that though, we ran out of rice and wanted another bowl but after unsuccessfully waiting for our server, I walked over to the kitchen area and asked for another bowl. Overall was still a very good experience and we really liked all of the food, so I wouldn't hesitate to return and would recommend it as one of the better Indian / Himalayan restaurants where I've eaten. read more

Last minute decision when my mom said she was in the mood for "something with curry." So here we are. Walking in, the ambiance is very plain. White table linens covered with a piece of glass for protection, I wasn't expecting that. During lunch it seemed everyone was interested in the buffet, as well as was our server. When we asked for menus the server was put off and asked about the buffet. The menu clearly said that meal prep is expected to take 15-20 minutes. When I ordered Tandori chicken, the server stated it was already in the buffet and it was less expensive. I realized that this then took away any to-go that I would have remaining, which I like, but I also had the gut feeling that we should go along with the buffet options. As expected, the buffet was okay with a small salad section, 8 hot food options and some ice cream. The tandoori chicken was good and as my first thought returned, I wish I would have had some leftovers. read more

After years of wanting to try this place, we finally made it here. We often have our children with us, and they can be hard to feed at an Indian restaurant, so we hadn't been. A date night allowed us to venture here. We arrived around 6:15pm and there were only a couple tables occupied. We were told to select a desired table to sit at. We chose a booth. Then we perused the large menu. Lots of items to choose from. We started with samosas. I selected the Steamed Chicken Momo and my husband had the Chicken Tikka Masala. We also ordered naan. My husband got his dish hot while I had mine medium. The food came out rather quickly. We dove right in. The vegetable samosas had the perfect level of seasoning and were tasty. The momos and sauce were delicious! We also believe they are something our kids would love (yay, we can all come back together). My husband enjoyed his dish and the level of heat that came with it. I tasted his and while it was too spicy for me, it was delicious. The naan was wonderful. We watched many carry-out orders be picked up and the restaurant started to fill around 7:30pm. The only service issue we had was needing more water. They didn't check on us once the food came and our waters were emptied. I eventually got the attention of the waiter and they were filled. Once finished with our food, we didn't know if we paid at the table or counter and eventually got up and went to the counter after no one came to the table. We are excited to bring the entire family back next time. I'd love to come when they have the buffet so we can try more at once. read more

I was leery because a native Iowan recommended this place, but I spent far too long missing out on this delight! Flavorful, fantastic, and authentic cuisine that you wouldn't expect even in Des Moines! The prices are fair, the service is pretty good, and the food is glorious! My one and only complaint is that they brought my dessert out the same time as the main course. Other than that, it's absolutely perfect. The spice level isn't accurate, they definitely bring the heat! Go for the mildest flavor unless you're a dragon. It isn't heat just for heat, there's flavor. They also had a chow mein dish, white rice and a couple other dishes (a couple pictured) and some desserts. I think the only thing I'd change is to add a few more dishes. We just LOVE this place! With vegetarian friends, we wanted to introduce them to yet another place with great options for them. Vegetable momo: vegetable "potstickers" sautéed w/ onions, bell peppers, in a spicy sauce. Toooooo much ginger IMO in the sauce, overpowered the dish. I would've loved these more with significantly less ginger. I do want to try the vegetable momo soup. Tandoori chicken: theirs is different than other places, sautéed in a sauce where as other places just bring out the marinaded chicken. Again, very tasty! Vegan Thali: 3 smaller vegan dishes on a platter. Can't tell you what they were but the soupy (yellow) one I tried and it was delicious. My friend said she loved hers, and as a vegetarian she appreciates amazing array of spices. Mixed Veg Curry: another vegetarian at the table, and he loved his xxx spicy. I tasted it, very delish. Our first time having Indian food. I had the chicken biryani. It had great flavor and I had more food than I could even put a dent in. It came with raita, which was also tasty, but I didn't get a picture of. My teen got vegetable and cheese dumplings in a sauce. My husband got a chicken dish in a sauce. Everything was good. The lunch buffet looked good too. I might try it next time. Great first experience. The staff was also so nice. I'd love to go back and try more dishes. read more

Everyone raves about Kathmandu so I thought it was about time I checked it out. Especially since they opened the Windsor Heights location and it's just 15 blocks or so from my apartment complex... Here's the problem I have reviewing anything in this ballpark. I know what tastes good to me, but I know next to nothing about Indian, Nepalese, Pakistani, etc. cuisine. Outside of the basics research online can provide I'm lost in that little corner of the world... And I can't get my girlfriend or kids to eat it so not only am I kind of flying blind...I'm usually flying solo too. I ordered take-out online last night and their ordering system was pretty easy, but it had a couple of small deficits. - I chose to pay online. When I was checking out I included a tip, but the app didn't catch it when it totaled me out. I've been WAY better about making sure to always have some cash handy lately so that wasn't a big deal at all. - The second thing is the app didn't give me an expected time of completion on my order. Being a first timer I was had no idea how long food normally takes here. A quick call to the restaurant took care of that. 25 minutes. Service on the phone and at pick up was good. There was one gentleman working the phones and handling take-out...and he was being kept very busy. I ordered chicken vindaloo (comes with naan and rice) and fried chicken momos. The total came to $27 before taxes and tip. Not having been here before I went with a medium heat on everything. It was more mild than I expected, but sometimes "hot" can be at a whole different level so I played it safe. The chicken vindaloo had nice flavor. Boneless dark meat (thighs) and a few big chunks of potato. The potatoes were cooked perfectly. Soft to the bite, but not mushy. The chicken was fantastic. Tender and not dry at all. I do regret not going "hot" with this dish... The chicken momos... I've never ordered anything like these before, but I'm a sucker for dumplings. The filling was similar to what I've had in other samosas I've tried, but the wrapper was more like a classic gyoza. I really liked these. Someone needs to school me on what the red sauce is they serve with these... The food was really good. I'm struggling a little with bang for the buck. I ate all the chicken vindaloo, rice, naan, and most of the chicken momos. Pretty much crushed it. That's kind of an expensive casual dinner for one person. Could I have eaten less and stretched it into two meals? Probably. So I think that's on me... I feel like the entree portion was a little smaller than other similar restaurants, but the food is worth the price. So do you go for less quantity but better quality? Or do you go for more food but maybe not quite as good...? I have a similar problem with sushi. Circumstances usually dictate where I end up going. I'm glad I finally got to try the food from Kathmandu. It was a good experience overall. I'm sure I'll be a return customer, but I'm not going to lie... I've still got a little internal battle going on right now... Was it good enough to pull me away from my normal go-tos in this particular genre? I guess time will tell. Recently, Namaste India changed ownership and subsequently shuttered their doors, leaving a void in this part of town. I'm pleased to report that Kathmandu has filled in nicely. I dig their buffet setup. Instead of a double sided steam table, the holding pans are built in and spread out--i think it makes for a tidier appearance. Additionally, careless patrons won't drip food into pans. The chutneys, fruits, etc. are in a separate unit that's covered. Nice selection of options--tandoori chicken, chicken tikka masala, chicken curry, lemon rice, and aloo gobi were just some of the options. All were nicely spiced. Not overly hot, but certainly not mild. Onion bhaji were crispy and larger than most. Waiter service was prompt, friendly and efficient. Chai masala is available as a complimentary beverage option on the buffet. Only gripe--they don't use filtered water if that's your beverage option. Windsor Heights mineral water instead! read more

We discovered Kathmandu when businesses started to reopen and so far, is our favorite Indian food place. Every single time we have visited, the food has been fresh, well cooked and of course, delicious. Our favorite appetizer is the chicken 65 and for main plates, my husband usually gets the chicken makhni with our favorite garlic naan bread and so for me I've tried vandaloo, curries and tikka masala; all of them have been generously served and so comforting. Every single time we have a chance to visit around the area, is a sure visit to Kathmandu. Staff has been always attentive and friendly, we will keep visiting soon. read more
