I was visiting LA last minute and on a complete impulse, reached out with very little hope. Esther opened her studio just for me because I was from out of town. I was so touched. That kind of generosity set the tone for the entire experience. Her Burbank studio is clean, bright, and filled with natural light, and that's exactly the kind of space you want for color work. The session ran about 70 min and was more thorough than I anticipated. There's the standard draping, but Esther also looked through my actual makeup products, scrolled my Instagram, and reviewed my wardrobe to figure out what was and wasn't working for me. We went through slides of makeup recs and I got to try products in real life too. I came in thinking I was a Mute Autumn (I used AI...). Turns out I'm a Strong Autumn, and that distinction actually explains a lot for me. It's not the cheapest investment, but it reframes how you spend going forward with more intentionality. What's disappointing is now realizing that a store full of pretty clothes aren't all options for me and the truth is uncovered that only a handful of clothes work for me. The illusion is over. Session 3: Makeup and Hair. I was never really patient enough to teach myself how to wear makeup properly. Veronica gave me a complete lesson! Hair: she took me to a great hair salon and instructed the hair stylist to transform my hair to look like a million bucks. My hair felt so bouncy and looks so sophisticated. I found out I'm a summer cool which was very surprising! I learned a lot from this appointment on what colors look best on me and really brighten up my face versus what colors to avoid which make me look more dull or tired. I felt like the appointment was a bit rushed though towards the end. It would have been nice if we had a bit more time to go over makeup. Most of the time was spent with draping the different colors of cloth over our bodies to figure out what season we are and not enough time going over the results. She did email us a thorough pdf though afterwards which included clothing, jewelry, and makeup suggestions based on our analysis. But for the price we paid, I just wished we had a tad bit more time. She was honest but toed what I'm sure can be an uncomfortable line with clients when they want an item but it just isn't for them. In the process she was able to start identifying gaps in my wardrobe (she was astonished I didn't have a single plain T-shirt - perfect for layering under fun accessories I can switch out every season or two) and spotting trends to understand my personal style (I flock to unique or embellished tops). I felt good wearing everything that was left in closet. It was a freeing experience. The Shopping Trip: Amy and I did a full day of shopping and in that time I was amazed at how quickly she found items that fit my body and matched my personal style. Instead of trying on a half dozen pants and ending the day exhausted I was exhilarated.
