Katie Marienthal Smith has a very unique style of acupuncture compared to other places I've tried. Most places I've gone to have usually put the needles straight in or around your pain points. Katie's approaches almost the opposite at least for my experience. She told me about some science or something about how there's channels in your body to where reducing the pain actually comes from putting a needle on a completely opposite side of your body. For example, for my left thumb, she put needles around my right foot / ankle area. And for my neck pain on my left side she put needles around my wrist area. She puts needles in you until the pain level that you stated has gone down enough. When she's put enough needles in you she'll let you rest for 25 ish minutes like most acupuncture places. While the pain did go down while I was in the office it came back within an hour me going back to work, but I think that's to be expected since I have a computer job. So based on the high reviews I assumed continuing to go to Katie would probably lead to longer-term results. However, as of when I wrote this review Katie was only seeing patients in her office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. While there was very minor pain relief, I'll admit I wasn't solid on the science of acupuncturing areas away from the actual issue. Especially since the pain relief was extremely temporary. In addition, despite me having a pain in many places in my body, Katie basically only worked on like 2-3 of my pain areas at time. Most regular acupuncture places have no problem putting needles all throughout your body. Is it possible I could have been better if I could actually see her 2-3 times a week? Possibly. But due to how busy she apparently was, it seems like it's only beneficial to go to her if you're a long-standing patient of hers. Or if you only have a few issues instead of many like me. read more

I went to Katie when I found out I had placenta previa and had a few sessions with her before my next fetal growth scan. She gave me some Chinese herbs to try and worked on me about four sessions. When I went for my next growth scan my placenta previa was gone! And I got amazing news that I was able to deliver my baby vaginally the way I had hoped. I suffered from SPD (pelvis/hip) issues early on in my pregnancy (20 weeks) to the point I was using a walker/wheelchair and mostly bedridden with excruciating pain. This review might be a bit premature, as I only underwent my initial acupuncture therapy yesterday afternoon. Nevertheless, it is difficult to articulate the incredible change I am experiencing after just one session. The severe shoulder and lower back discomfort that has troubled me intermittently (mostly persistently) for the last several years has vanished. I woke up this morning with a slight, dull ache, (likely from the percussion therapy) but now at 2PM, I feel pain free. pain FREE! I'm not sure how this is possible and even if the relief is temporary, I am grateful for it. I'm not claiming that Katie is a miracle worker, but this experience feels nothing short of miraculous to me. I found Katie through Yelp and because of another user's experience with eczema. I had an awful eczema outbreak on my hands and legs. I saw dermatologists, my primary care doctor, and other acupuncturists and all to no avail. In the first appointment, she really listened to my history and looked at my whole body health, not just where the eczema was happening. I've been going to Katie for acupuncture for 5 years...and I'm somehow JUST writing a review. The truth is, I could write a 5 star review after every appointment with her. I have been experience stress-related anxiety and someone recommended I try acupuncture with Katie Marienthal. My body is very sensitive to treatments, and she took that to heart and really eased into it. I felt like my body was really respected. The needles can feel a bit strange at first (I was a first timer). But, as I relaxed into the table I started to feel energy open up, my body relax, and a really zen-like state come over me. Katie Marienthal has CHANGED my life and SKIN issues! I would recommend Katie for anyone struggling with stress, eczema, menopause (night sweats), depression.....because I had all of the above due to my skin related issues. I could write a book about all the skin struggles I have suffered in the past 19 years and still would not begin to tell my story! I've had hip pain for the past 2 years. I've tried massage, chiropractic, stretching, exercise, rolfing, etc with no improvements. Managing chronic pain has been an ongoing problem for me the last three years. My pain is located in the most inconvenient of places, the left part of my scrotum and my left sit bone. These pains have gravely impacted my life and have forced me to abandon physical hobbies (e.g. sports and gym), sexual activity with my significant other, and much more. Western doctors have not been able to solve the problem despite an overwhelming amount of testing which included blood work, urine test, ultrasounds, CAT scans, and MRIs. The only evidence procured were herniated discs in L4, L5, S1; however, I do not have lower back pain typically associated with these herniated discs. Moreover, the nerves pertaining to these herniated discs are not linked to the areas I have pain. Without any explanation of what is causing my pain, I have resorted to treating the my pain symptoms. Therefore, I have been involved in physical therapy and chiropractic therapy. Even though these therapies helped lower my pain, my problem was never truly solved. Recently, I have turned to acupuncture. Katie Marienthal is my licensed acupuncturists. Now before I begin my review of Katie, I want to address the issues most of us [who are not acquainted with acupuncture] think about. The first issue was my fear of being pricked by needles. More importantly, I have always questioned the validity of acupuncture. I have now been treated by Katie three times. Every time has been phenomenal, and now the needles are my friends. The easiest way to enjoy the experience and receive the full health benefits of acupuncture, is to relax. In doing so, the initial needle prick will not feel more than a small pinch. If you ascertain full relaxation, the punctured needle will help calm your muscles. In this tranquil state, clearing your mind is possible. Thus, for me the experience is both a physical and mental restoration. In totality, the needles are not our enemies and acupuncture really can work for you. After the very first treatment I noticed immediate relief in my scrotum and sit bone. And unexpectedly, I felt my muscle relaxation in my abdomen. This provided me with more mobility and a sense of energy. Katie also prescribed me two herbal remedies based on my hectic life; the first was to rehabilitate my liver and the other was to manage my cortisol (stress) levels. The herbal remedies have helped lower my pain levels and help me engage in a deeper sleep. Moreover, in my daily life I feel less stressed and have more energy to be productive. Katie has a plethora of knowledge in the realm of acupuncture and her practice is extremely proficient. She provides specific, effective treatments plans based on your pain problems. I think some bonus points can be awarded for her charismatic personality and her dedication to her patients. I highly recommend Katie Marienthal. I went to Katie Marienthal in last ditch effort to alleviate a horrible rash that I had been fighting for about 2 months. Prior to my visit with Katie, I went to the dermatologist several times to figure out what was the cause and to find relief. The dermatologist prescribed me 5 different medications, (one strong antibiotic and 4 topicals) to address my symptoms with no real conclusive diagnosis. None of the medicines prescribed helped. I was absolutely miserable! I went to Katie to get a different opinion and perspective. Needless to say, I was able to get a relief from my rash within one visit. By the next appointment, Katie was able to fine tune her treatment, suggest dietary modifications and take a more aggressive approach in getting to the root cause of my horribly itchy rash. Through acupuncture, herbs (both oral and topical) and diet modifications, I was able to get rid my of rash within a couple weeks. Later, I decided to follow up with my dermatologist (still had a follow-up appointment scheduled) and confirmed that my rash was a more unusual symptom of celiac disease, in which according to the dermatologist, there is no cure. I was told that the rash may take 4-6 months to go away. Thanks to Katie, she was abIe to get to the root cause of my rash, formulate a treatment plan and help me get rid of my rash within 2 1/2 weeks.
