I have tried real hard to like this bakery. Local. Family. But after several tries it's a, "Never again". The frosting is lard based and leaves a coating in your mouth. I can be very picky and have been known to wonder why a place has rave reviews after eating (or throwing away) what I buy. Although they do use gluten free products, if you have Celiac Disease, be wary. They do NOTHING to prevent cross contamination. They do wash and sterilize pans, but they do not bake on a separate day or say first thing in the morning, so my daughter could not eat it. My fault, I guess I did not ask the right questions. When my daughter asked the day we picked it up, Katie was very abrupt and told us she would say if you have celiac disease, don't take the chance. That should have been told to me when I ordered the cake because I did tell the woman taking the order that that was my daughters issue. When I placed the order, granted it was the day before Thanksgiving, I was rushed off the phone. I asked for cream cheese frosting, but got butter cream. The cake was so dense and overly sweet, it went into the garbage. I would not go back and I would not recommend. read more

The cookies looked amazing - and the woman in front of us snagged the last black and whites, d'oh! There's also a whole rack of freshly baked bread snd cabinet of pre-packed cookies. The best thing we got was an apple Nutella pie/turnover. We actually ate it before breakfast because we couldn't wait! We split a chocolate almond croissant for breakfast. Perfecto! We're staying at a local hotel and front desk told me Katie Rose Bakery provides the cakes for their events. Well I'm sold at this point. I wanted to make coffee after the drive and nibble on something so I drove to the bakery. Walking inside, their baked goods are proudly on display. We had pain au chocolat and a slice of blueberry pie for breakfast. Croissant was crisp and flaky, Baby Bear amount of chocolate. Blueberry pie was chock full of berries. Slice was chilled, which was perfect for eating (held together really well, so you could pick up the last third like a breakfast pastry, though room temp would probably be optimally flavorful (flavor was super good, just think it might be even better if a little warmer). Impressive espresso machine behind the counter and Harney &Sons tea, but we had our own coffee today, so didn't test their barista skills. Cookies looked very tempting and were, frankly, adorable. Cakes were beautiful, too. There wasn't a huge selection of pastry, which to me means that they don't try to do too much. What we had was just right, and I would bet the rest of their offerings are just as satisfying. Only a couple places to sit inside, but benches outside look like they'd be a nice place to sit when it's a little warmer. We would definitely come here again. read more

The pie was pretty, but we were expecting a crumb pie. Instead, it was like an apple crumble made with mostly oats. Crumb pies are normally topped with a mixture of flour, sugar, butter, etc. The apple filling was delicious, but the pie crust was actually hard. It was so hard that a fork couldn't easily break through it. An apple pie should have a flaky crust. At $21, it should have been better and described more accurately. We were disappointed, and won't order from Dressel's and therefore Katie Rose Bakery again. read more

We had just finished lunch, when I saw the sign for this bakery. So of course, we had to stop. The place is found in the back, and parking is plentiful. They are in a new building, and I think they were even finishing the spackling on the walls. So when you enter, you see the glass case where all the goodies await you. So of course I'm mesmerized, and don't see the seasonal menu after I've drooled all over the place. Sooo much to see, so little time to nosh. Anyway, we took home some rainbow cookies (for me), black & white cookie (for the hubbie) and a cinnamon loaf for us to share over coffee in the morning. If you're in the area, they do have a coffee nook where you can do the same. Now we had just finished a late lunch, but of course I couldn't wait to eat the rainbow cookies. Soooo fresh and very good, worth the visit! And the price. These gems aren't cheap, but if the goodies are Very Good, you have to expect to pay a bit more. So in a way, I'm glad this will be a treat for me when we are in the area because I can definitely see myself spending too much money on their goodies, and gaining weight {sigh}. I had her make my birthday cake because she advertised no sugar added cake...what I didn't expect was no sweetener added. The cake tasted like paste. Nobody ate it. I went in to complain, assuming she made a mistake, and to ask for a refund. Not only was I denied a refund, I was belittled for insulting her art, and told I should be grateful she's one of the few people who makes cakes for "people like me"...whatever that means. I even brought the cake in for her to taste, and she wouldn't. She offered to make me some cupcakes, which I didn't want. Be careful entering the location - it is a shared driveway with other commercial establishments and if you are coming from downtown Hopewell the entrance appears quickly on your right, just after foliage and a "Step by Step" banner.
