I made a stop here on my way to Grand Lake. The Kawuneeche Visitor Center is located on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park. It is one mile north of Grand Lake and just south of the park entrance station on U.S. Highway 34 (Trail Ridge Road). I did the long 40+ mile drive from Estes Park to here and was happy to finally get out of the car and walk around. It is a nice visitor center with restrooms, paper map, books, merchandise and exhibits with information about the park. There are park rangers on hand to answer questions that you may have. You can get permits and information about backcountry camping and hiking in the park at this visitor center. After spending a week in Rocky Mountain National Park, I enjoyed checking out the topographical map of the park and seeing all of the places that I visited. I covered a lot of ground while I was here. The Tonahutu Spur Trail starts outside the visitor center near the parking lot. Sadly, a fire burned up many of the trees on this trail years back. Don't forget to get your national park passport book stamped while at the visitor center. read more

This particular ranger station/visitor center is well equipped for a bit of shopping and some much needed bathroom time. Also, what I liked the most is their educational capability here. Ever had a burning question about what the hell was that white poop on the trail? Wait-what about the ones that look like big giant almond like shaped poop? What about the ones littered with fruit seeds? Oh yeah. I'm curious as hell. If you're like me no need to bother the rangers. Do this: if you're facing the counter inside the building to your left as you go in; go to the left end of it. There you will see separated in compartments are varied dried poops(the wild animal kind) labeled for you and me. Open it. Take a pic! Go home and now you're prepared to name each one you'll see on the trail. The white one? It's a Bobcat. That's the freebie you'll get. Now go! Oh yeah. You need to go all the way to the second smaller counter to pick up your backcountry permit. You will be questioned politely about your capability to handle some situations. Ex: snowshoes? Tons of snow? Trail not visible? This is the time to admit your shortcomings if you have any:) Now happy trails but pls do it lightly. Pick up after yourself pls. read more

Really nice visitors center that is a 2 minute drive outside the entrance to the Rocky Mountain National Park. They have several park rangers on site and offer classes throughout the day. I picked up some good information from a Ranger before I headed into the park. read more

Ranger Barb led us on a 2+ hour kickass snowshoe tour east of the Holdsworth Cabin parking lot into the high country. So much snow you wouldn't believe it. And that ranger lady . . . tough as nails, leading us up terrain you'd just shake your head at and think, "no way we're going up there!" But up we'd go (well, it was billed as one of their more advanced level trips), and it was worth every panting breath. Punctuated with welcome rest stops every half hour or so, she'd give of all kinds of interesting and fascinating historical and natural science information. This free (did you get that? . . . FREE) service includes a lemon drop stop, ala the kindness of the rangers who lead the trip. Not to be missed, these weekly trips out of the Kawuneeche Visitors Center are an enormous bright spot in our national park system! (P.S. I'll admit it--it's the public restroom that brings me here every time. But once I'm there, I always learn something new. It's comfortable to sit and look over the information. There are computers to map out your day. Menus from nearly every restaurant, helpful folks on staff. A good place to start your adventure in Estes Park or RMNP. read more

The quieter side of Rocky Mountain National Park. Less people, knowledgeable Rangers and volunteers, interesting exhibits and an informative film about the park all adds up to 5-stars in my book. Cleaning bathrooms, bear proof garbage cans, recycling drop and a water refilling station (spigot). We enjoyed a ranger talk and got some info here that made our visit productive. 3.5 stars in the winter This is not open during the winter, but helpful information is available on the message boards, specifically around snow-shoeing. I rented snow-shoes from OTTR and started at Kawuneeche Visitor Center to look for trailheads. I read the message boards and found a few spots to try out in RMNP. Snow-shoeing was a lot more fun than most people would make it out to be. It's easy and it was very peaceful to wander around with a camera and my thoughts in the park. Be aware that the trails around here are rarely used in the winter, so consult a walking/hiking map of the trails. I got really close to a river, which would have sucked. If I'd fallen through the water, I'd surely be dead because there wasn't anybody else out there. I used MapMyWalk (it has a snow-shoe option if you want to calculate your calorie usage) after I realized how close I got to the water. On my next trail, I headed straight South when the trail went West. Fortunately I could tell on my app and go back since the trail was not marked. The park really needs to label the trails for winter guests. This could have ended badly. read more

Very well done information center. Picturesque brook runs right under the sidewalk just steps from the front door, the information and audio/visual interactive topographical map is a really nice touch! The rangers are friendly and patient. A nice complement to the Rocky Mountain National Park! read more
