We would not let a little little tiny sprinkle keep us from kayaking the Hanalei River! We paddled to the bay and then on up to the river. There were four of us and we used two tandems. We haven't reserved anything and they made it so easy for us we took sunscreen and rash guards and bottled water with us. That's all you really need. It's employee was super friendly. This company and our tour guides were exceptional! From our check-in to the fitting of our snorkel gear to finding a gift at the end of our outing the women were warm and patient. Our guides, Kolo and Cousin Kalani, were warm, patient, knowledgeable, and funny. They gave us on -the-ground proper paddling instructions, taught us some Hawaiian words, and reassured everyone of our safety. The scenery was beautiful as we paddled to the bay and heard about the islands' history and times of old on Kauai. The snorkeling was amazing and it was made even more meaningful because we saw pictures and learned beforehand about the different fish we could encounter! Our sandwiches were huge and Kalani's ukulele music blessed the event even more! Kola opened up a fresh coconut to share! They went out of their way to make our trip an amazing one! The business seems very reputable and well run. We rented a double kayak and paddled up the Hanalei River until we were exhausted then turned around and came back. First, I spent many years in Louisiana. If you've lived down South and done any tubing, canoeing, or kayaking on the rivers, it's the same. There are some tall Palm trees to see and a few birds. Perhaps you'll see a turtle. But we didn't see anything extraordinary. It was a nice paddling day, but nothing earth shattering. We've done both, and I think the SUP is probably easier (and more advisable if you're a couple, unless you're an expert kayaking couple or have a marriage counselor in your boat...). Or get two kayaks. We like the SUP. it's not as hard as you think. read more

Great place to kayak for all levels from beginner to expert. Scenery is great. Reasonably priced. Water flow isn't strong. Lots of amazing trees and animals to see. Plenty of fish and birds to observe. Kayaks are well made and not cheap. Life jacket are provided and optional to wear, just have to have it on the kayak at least. Only thing I would change would be to ask the clients if they would like to know how to re-enter the kayak if they fall out. Though the likely hood of falling out is very minimal it's always good practice for those that are more nervous about such things. Otherwise highly recommended activity! read more

We had a great time with Kayak Hanalei this May during a trip for our anniversary. It was even better than I expected! The guides were super friendly and made us feel very comfortable. They are hands on and like to give you a lot of info about the flora and fauna you see, answer questions about what to do in Kauai, help you understand the culture, teach you some Hawaiian words, etc. I really like that this is a family run business, and they treat the customers like their guests! The whole family seems to work there and they are all very nice, as are the paid guides. Our guides were Gabe and the owner's son, forget his name. We did the half day Kayak tour around Hanalei Bay with snorkelling and it was a lot easier than I thought (but I was more sore afterwards than I anticipated, too!). There were a lot of families in our group with younger children, but everyone managed just fine in the open ocean, and the guides "towed" a few of the kayaks that had one small kid and one parent in it where it was harder for them to paddle. So I felt pretty safe. Worth the money, and you can get a discount by booking directly on their website. We'll definitely come back next time when we're in Kauai and try one of their other tours! read more

Had a great time with Kayaks Hanalei. Very organized and friendly service. We rented two SUP boards and went up the river to the national refuge. Cost was $40/pp before 1 pm. We started our trip at around 11 am. I would recommend going in the mid-morning as there didn't seem to be too many ppl on the river. We made it all way until it was really shallow. Last time we were in Kauai, we kayaked and hiked wailua and the secret falls and wanted to do something different. We love Hanalei and wanted to stick to river kayaking as we are not super confident kayakers. The staff here is very helpful and the rentals not expensive. We grabbed our oars and life vests and heads to the dock. Super easy launch and off we went. We took awhile to get the hang of not running into bushes, but it became easier. It started pouring but it was still very fun. We even saw fish jumping out of the water. Nice float down the river, beautiful landscape. You can choose 2 different routes. Check them out. read more

I went kayaking with my guy in Hawaii. What an excellent experience. The trip was a 4-hour kayaking trip that included snorkeling at a near by beach and a full lunch! The owners were very helpful from start to finish. We arrived a little early to check in. When we arrived, we were given small dry bags for our electronics and larger bags for our towels and other essentials. The guides helped to load the kayaks then put us in the kayak and pushed us down a ramp--to avoid capsizing, lol! We immediately ran into trouble--got stuck in the mud :) The tour guides were SUPER! Gave a lot of information during the tour. Stopped and picked the yellow state flower for each female on the trip. While kayaking one of the guys was making flowers from Palm leaves. Again gave rack female the hand crafted flower before we headed back after lunch. We arrived at a great little beach where we snorkeled for about an hour. My guy and I snorkeled hand and hand...awwwe! After snorkeling, we had a great lunch that included a large sandwich, chips, juice, an apple banana ( the best banana I've ever had), and a cookie for dessert. I needed every carb to make it back! What nice people, and a great place from which to launch. We rented a double kayak and took it first into the wildlife sanctuary until we reached a clear dead-end. We turned around and headed for the bay/ocean, which was gorgeous. This trip is well worth the cost. Weather was iffy when we went and office called us early morning to say the trip was a "go". It turned out to be a beautiful day after all. Kalani was a wonderful guide, sharing the flora and fauna of the river along the kayak trip and safely guiding us from the river to our snorkeling spot. I have been coming to Kauai for 10 years and this was the best snorkeling ever - water was very clear and fish everywhere. Kalani shared lots of knowledge of the fish we might see. I saw a 5-6' eel and others saw turtles. Kalani served us lunch at our snorkeling spot and we had plenty of time in the water before returning to the river and back to put-in spot. We had an awesome time! This experience is beginner friendly but also fun for experienced Kayakers. We started with paddling around in the river before heading into the bay. After 'yak surfing some waves, we parked at a beach and spent about an hour snorkeling with dozens of different types of fish. We saw some turtles from our boats, but not during snorkeling. Then it was lunch on the beach and a bit more paddling in the bay before heading in. We were content, sun baked, and ready for a nap! It's a fun tour and the guide is excellent: he gives some fun history along the way and goes out of his way to make sure you have a good time. I'd recommend checking out this tour. read more

We can honestly say this was a big highlight of our vacation. This was our first time on Kauai and this was my husband's and my 25th anniversary trip. The two tour guides were engaged with our group, gave excellent information about the area and made everyone feel at ease. They gave simple instructions on kayaking and made sure we felt comfortable. The snorkeling was amazing and again the guides were fully engaged with our group and assisted us as needed. The lunch provided was perfect for after snorkeling. Again, excellent services and the two tour guides even sang Hawaiian songs for us on the beach while we had our lunch. They seemed genuinely happy to be with our group. I would give this place 0 stars if I could. We were given a three person kayak already BROKEN. Water got into our kayak the entire time we were out on the river. Our belongings were lost. Our belongings that were placed and seal d by their employees into their DRY BAG were wet and ruined. We could not return to the dock I. The kayak and we had to walk onto the side of the road to get back to the dock. After all if this, they had the nerve to blame us for the broken kayak. They tried to use every excuse in the book for how we could have broken it. I have a bad knee and would never jump into a river. They claim dived into the water. RIDICULOUS. When I asked for records of inspection of the kayak, a business card, and a copy of the waiver, I was kicked off the premises. What a damn joke. read more

We had a beautiful kayak trip upriver past the Hanalei Bridge to the wildilfe refuge, then back down to Hanalei Bay where we beached the kayaks and walked out to the pier. The sales lady looked at our family and after realizing we were going to ride with our little kids, convinced us not to rent due to the high winds. If we could give it 10 stars we would. We have been on many tours in Kauai, this one ranks among the best, and seroiusly I think it is the best. We have been coming to Kauai for 22 years. Our guides Harry and Kolo took such good care of us, from instructing us tabout kayaking and navagating the ocean, to entertaining us with songs, foklore, palm tree weavings, fish knowledge and ancient Hawaiian teachings. They added so much extra than just a kayak adventure. We had a mixed group of families and couples and they handled the group so well that we did not have to slow our pace and they were calm and patient thoroughout the whole trip. I highly recommend this adventure as great value given the local flavor and stories told by our amazing. Guide Gabe. Plus, the fact that we kayaked a river, capsized into the ocean ( all good!) and snorkeled on a great beach called 'Hideaway Beach' in one morning makes it a really fun treat. The lunch in the shade was so welcome. Gabe made us feel like royalty and not all like the clumsy tourists we were when we tried to get back into our flipped Kayak. The swell was a bit high today so the guide adjusted our route home and paddled like crazy to make sure we were all safe. I say go on this high challenge, low risk adventure but be prepared to flip over if the waves are up! Lots of fun. read more

Easy access to Hanalei river! We did not book a tour but rented kayaks around 830am for our family. Very friendly staff and helpful. You book upstairs in office where they provide dry bags for your items and give you a number. You then head over to launch area and select a life jacket as they are required. We did notice some of the zippers on the jackets were broken but the snaps were fine. They even had jackets up to 2x. You then grab an oar and head to launch area. So easy as you just sit and they push you off! Same on the return, just kayak up the ramp as far as you can and they help you off. There are 2 directions you can head in; one takes about 30 minutes out towards the beach and the other is about 1.5 hours towards a wildlife sanctuary. We did the 2nd one and were a little disappointed that there wasn't more to see. There was a bridge we went under and two areas that had tons of brush. Although this review is for the Kayak rentals not the Hanalei river itself I did want to point out that it was windy on our way back which made it more challenging to kayak in a straight line as the wind kept propelling us to the right. The kayaks themselves were ok, pretty basic. But this us an easy fun activity in Hanalei. read more

A great time kayaking down the Hanalei River then snorkeling at pretty Puu Poa Beach with an expansive view of the Hanalei Bay. I did this with my teenage daughter in June and we had no prior kayaking experience - we were fine; they tell you what you need to know and the tour starts with a Kayak 101 lesion. The guides were fun, attentive and informative. The scenery on the river was amazing. There were not many fish on the reef but that is not the fault of the tour company. The tour has a leisurely pace and is relaxing but you still get a good workout in. The sandwiches were good and the beach mats were a nice touch. read more

We did the morning bay tour, and I really can't recommend it enough. There were about 6 tandem kayaks on our tour, and two guides in their own kayaks. They were great at teaching paddling basics, and led us on a pretty smooth trip to a beach by the Princeville St Regis for lunch and snorkeling, then back to the dock. Both guides were super friendly and shared a lot of interesting facts along the way. They paced the trip well, so nobody was struggling too much. I'd definitely rent kayaks from them next time I'm in Hanalei. read more

This is our second time on the Hanalei River with Kayak Hanalei. Service is friendly. Pricing is reasonable. We had two adults and three kids so we rented a SUP and a Triple kayak. At the dock we realized my youngest was small enough to add a seat to the double. They were happy to refund us the difference and it made paddling a bit easier. We went right this time and made it all the way to the wildlife refuge. It rained on and off which turned out to be a lot of fun. If the surf isn't too big I suggest paddling out to Hanalei Bay. Its beautiful and a great place to drag your equipment to shore and take a dip. If you're staying in the north (or up for another long drive) tour rental can be used again the following morning at no extra charge. read more

We were extremely pleased with Kayak Hanalei. We had a great and easy time. We went for the discounted afternoon trip that starts at 1.00 pm and finishes back at 5.30 pm. The check in went very smoothly. The check in desk people at Kayak Hanalei asked us if we had done this activity before ( we had) and made sure if there were any question on the different river trip routes, they were all answered very politely and curiously. (See the website for the different options ) We picked up our supplied PFD (Personal Flotation Device) , dry bag, paddles and kayak and were in the water in approximately 5 minutes . I even notice a shelf with sunscreen bottles on it for customers to use if you forgot to bring some of your own (be sure to apply it to the tops of your feet too) We decided to head up stream up to the bridge, then reverse,going downstream to the outlet into Hanalei Bay , then back to the dock. It was a great afternoon and since we applied our 50 SPF sunscreen on before getting off on the river, we came back in great shape. If you wish to make it a day trip or just an afternoon activity, we cannot say enough on how much we enjoyed the customer service and this facility . We highly recommend Kayak Hanalei read more

From the moment we checked in, we were encouraged and treated warmly. Our guide instructed us in kayaking, Hawaiian/Kauai culture and geography throughout the trip. He was funny and personable. As a novice kayaker I was nervous about the trip. Our guide stayed close, but allowed us to manage our own boats. I soon felt completely comfortable with my kayak, but was reassured by our guide who was never far away.
