Keiro- in Japanese means "respecting the elderly", and it bought the Jewish Home for the Aged in 1974 since more Jews were leaving Eastside Boyle Heights for the Fairfax district & parts of the San Fernando Valley. Keiro- wanted to use the facilities to create a culturally sensitive retirement home where the Issei/immigrant, Japanese speaking seniors would find a comfortable environment where they could use their primary language, eat familiar food, & be understood in a cultural environment sensitive to their needs. I feel Keiro- did a good job in meeting their stated goals. But in 2015 Keiro- did an about face in taking an active role in caring for Japanese speaking seniors by selling the Keiro- complex to Pacifica Company without any advance notice to the Japanese American community and without any input or opinion since after all, the donations by Japanese Americans in the past made it possible to purchase the site in the first place. The agreement to sell Keiro- to Pacifica was predicated on Pacifica's promise to keep the same culturally sensitive retirement system for 5 years, but there is no guarantee thereafter. It is rumoured that Pacifica would resell the Keiro- property for profit and that could mean the elderly would be forced to move and find another suitable retirement home which would be an extreme burden on the remaining elderly. What happened to Keiro's mission statement to respect the elderly? I suspect greed. Keiro- was sold for $41 million. Now the Keiro- board has way more wiggle room to manage the money as they see fit with minimal oversight. (wink, wink) The Keiro- board keeps repeating over & over about how they will use the money to improve the lives of the Issei, but so far it seems very superficial. Sakura Gardens still retains the same staff due to the provisions in its sale. However, costs are going up from what I heard from some residents. Care is still similar with Japanese food options, Japanese speakIng employees, but I notice that many volunteers have stopped coming to what is now Sakura Gardens either in protest to the sale of Keiro- or to the fact they are not as actively welcomed on site. Care at Sakura Gardens still seems to echo the previous care by the former Keiro management, but many of the present residents feel uneasy about what will happen at the end of the 5 year period. The present care at Sakura Gardens is about a 4, but the Keiro- Organization gets 0 stars for its traitorous selling out of a major Japanese American institution that is still critically needed today. Greed does strange things to people even to the detriment of their own kind. Looks like Nikkei Garden in Arleta is the only other option in terms of a wholely Japanese American owned senior care organization. PS Many of the staff are still trying to maintain good service & morale, Ryo-ko Teramoto being one of the stalwarts.

Tomoko and Daniel were so helpful in the process of admitting my mother who was extremely reluctant as you can expect! My mother has been in Sakura for almost a year now and she has acclimated quite well and seems to have a nice group of people to socialize with. I am so appreciative we found her a place where she is safe and well taken care of. The key is communication and Sakura does a good job at maintaining that.

The initial visit, the admissions process and the move-in process took about a month; I moved into Independent Living about a month ago. All issues that arose were addressed by the Director of Sales and Communications, the Director of Resident Services and Moving Coordinator, and the maintenance staff; to my total satisfaction. For instance, negotiation with the movers was sticky, but satisfactorily resolved. I was picky about the paint colors in each room, but very happy with the results. My experience moving in has been no different. Maintenance has repaired and installed everything in a professional manner. So far they have installed a fan, Spectrum, mounted bookshelves and replaced a broken garbage disposal. And that's only what immediately comes to mind. I also arranged to have Hollenbeck pick up and deliver all of my prescriptions. And, since day one, I began meeting other residents. They have all been super friendly. It helps to take your meals in the dining room (3 meals a day included) where you can have good conversations. Others have stopped me in the hall to chat ("Oh, you're the new resident with a cat..."). I haven't engaged in any activities yet, but I assume it's also a great way to meet the other residents. I'm very impressed with the staff (caring and of good cheer), the accommodations and the beautiful grounds (8.5 acres). When the time comes when I will need more care, I sense I will feel that I have chosen wisely.

We used a placement service that identified JH for us. We had several tours of other homes that were all in the same Valley area, and all around the same cost. What immediately stood out were the owners and the team on site. All friendly, caring, truly kind people. Andrei, who gave us our tour, was friendly, so knowledgeable and totally honest. He even brought up previous ownership issues the facility had faced and other issues that as a business owner, he had learned through and made specific improvements to address any issues. The care team that is on site is just amazing. They cook all meals in the kitchens right there so you know your family member will be getting home cooked meals that are nutritious and delicious (do NOT visit during meal prep time or you WILL want a plate!) These ladies bring a smile to Mom's face when they engage and I can tell just how much Mom has enjoyed getting to know them. The facility is also lovely. There is ample space with really nicely sized private rooms and bathrooms. The homes are in lovely garden surroundings and I'm pretty sure Jackie's Hideaway has turned my Mom into a bird watcher!!! While touring facilities in searching for a spot, Jackie's Hideaway was the only location that didn't focus on the glitz and window dressing of the facility. At one spot, the owner only focused on how expensive all of the decor was and how my Mom would be surrounded with luxury. I needed my mom to be surrounded by care and people who were going to be there to help her and not let her worry for a single thing. My mom chooses to hang in her room, but other residents are usually in the TV room or enjoying the garden when it isn't too hot outside. This freedom to do what makes you most happy...as odd as it sounds...is a big plus in these types of facilities. Many spots do what is most convenient for the staff...NOT for the residents. Jackie's Hideaway does not take that route. We are SO thankful we found Jackie's Hideaway and know that their care has lifted anxiety and worry from Mom...and from us. We hope to be a long-term success story!!!

They NEVER took her outside, and they were always short-staffed. The crazy thing is that these places were supposedly high-end senior care facilities. Well, when my mom needed more care, I was told to consider board & care places. I visited a number of them, and they weren't bad actually. However, when I saw Sweet Home, I really liked how it was set up, because typically these B&C places have only one home, which means 6 residents max. Sweet Home consists of 4 houses together, so not only are there more people in this little community, but the backyards of the 4 home are all connected, so there's more room to walk around. They also have 2 guys who come every Friday to play live music for the residents, which I love because everyone is outside, eating lunch, getting fresh air, and enjoying the music. On top of all that, the staff is very nice and very caring. You can tell that they genuinely want to help the residents. The reason they're so good is because of the two women who run the show -- Marina & Lucy. I can't say enough about them. They are very kind and really care about everyone there. I found places that were closer to my house, but I am SO glad I chose this place, because it's great from the top down! More importantly, my stress level about my mom has dropped WAY down!

A friend of mine had a good experience there with her mother, though, so we decided to give it a chance. I'm glad we did. My dad stayed at Alcott for about 4 months, and overall we had a very positive experience. The nurses, caregivers, PT, and OT staff were wonderful with him. They were patient, attentive, and genuinely caring toward my 90-year-old dad. Most importantly, he left much stronger and in much better physical condition than when he arrived. One thing that really stood out to me was how clean the facility was. There always seemed to be someone cleaning, and the staff truly tried their best to care for the residents. I know people complain about the food, but realistically it's hospital-style food, and they have to prepare meals that work for elderly residents with different health needs. We ended up bringing some of my dad's favorite foods whenever we visited, which helped. I also want to give a special thank you to Ms. Fern from Social Services. She was incredibly helpful in guiding me through the process of finding an assisted living facility for my dad, and she even followed up after his discharge to check on how he was doing. That meant a lot to our family. My dad was lucky and ended up having great roommates who looked out for each other, which was really sweet to see. Thank you to the entire Alcott team for taking care of my dad and helping our family through a difficult time.

While the facilities are undeniably outdated with beds from what looks like the 70s or 80s and little TVs that aren't working (at least in my father's room), it's the staff and the care I'm impressed with. Most of the staff is wonderful. Most of them are dedicated to the comfort and care of the patients. The patients are kept clean, dry, and as comfortable as possible. I can see an effort made to entertain as well as to the little chores we all have to do like manicures and such all on a regular schedule. It is a nice center courtyard floor plan which gives residents a connection with the outside and each other. The floor plan is why I picked this facility as I knew my father would enjoy, looking out and even going out on occasion. It would be nice if the facilities got a little remodeling however, I'm glad they spend their money on the staff and having enough staff, instead of a nice new place with less staff in which patients are neglected or abused. We lucked out because my father got a perfect roomate whose mind is just fine. He keeps an eye on my father and calls the nurse anytime my father forgets and tries to get out of bed which he shouldn't do alone. I do wish the facility would use a pressure pad, either on the floor or bed, that would alert them if a patient was getting up. Overall, this place doesn't smell as bad as many of these facilities do, I believe thanks to the care and attention of the staff. I'm resting easy that my father is being well taken care of. Since insurance is covering this right now, and we haven't gotten a bill yet, I don't know what the value is, however, I am happy I picked these facilities. I would pick them again.

Just like every other place, you cannot please everybody so I suggest you see the place for yourself since you or your family member will call it home for a period of time.
