I have found City View Assisted Living to be a second rate facility because of the administration. However, the one bright spot in this cesspool is Dawna Butala. If she were the administrator I would stay here forever. she has been my beacon of hope in the midst of this craziness and delusion. She has always had time to listen to my concerns, even my concerns about the facility, and those have have plentiful. She always seems to have the answers to the questions I have. If I have conflicts with the other residents, I always go to her for her wisdom and counsel. She keeps me informed about things I need to know about the facility and residents. She explained the process and gave a detailed tour of the installation. She was also very kind and empathetic. Now my loved one is in memory care. Hanna M., the Memory Care Director, is attentive, and all of her staff (nurses, aides, maintenance, and housekeeping) are warm and kind. They are always ready to help with a smile! My loved one adapted quickly. She enjoys the activities and the great view, while she appreciates the daily hard work and kindness of the CityView's staff, and is still aware of these important details. I cannot say enough good things about City View and the wonderful staff who cared for my husband who had Alzheimers . The third floor is for Memory Care patients. A home away from home. I was always impressed with the stimulating activities that seem to be ongoing. The entertainment they brought in always brought delightful smiles and clapping as the patients sang along or swayed to the music. The activities were so stimulating (daily exercising, arts and crafts, puzzles, painting, floral arrangements, sing alongside, watching classic movies, etc., etc.,). The patients are groomed daily, and it was not long before I realized they became my extended family. Did I mention that cleanliness and Safety are top priorities at City View. I watched as they made my husband smile with their kinds words and patience. They educated me as I navigated this unfamiliar journey. As expected my husbands Aggressive Alzheimer's worsened, but I was not alone as he declined. The staff were like family comforting him and caring for him in my absence, and giving me A hug too when I needed one. I do not hesitate to recommend City View to care for your loved ones. My brother moved into CityView about a month ago. He's rather shy and not the first person to volunteer for activities, but the staff has been wonderful, ensuring he feels included, welcoming him into the fold, and encouraging him to participate. Every staff person I have come across has been fantastic. Dawna and Venetta have been exceptional in navigating Social Security and the benefits he is entitled to, taking a massive pressure off of my shoulders. When we brought a television, they hung it on his wall the next day. When I was there, one of the aids on his floor made sure he knew he could pull the cord in his room anytime he needed something, that it didn't have to be an emergency, and she was there to help if he needed it. I thought it was really kind; it gives him a sense of independence with the security that someone is there to help him achieve that independence. The food is really good; my brother raves about it. And they have a decent gym with a bike that he enjoys for a few minutes daily. A hairdresser comes every other week, daily movie night (with real movies, not some "for older folks" movies). They have Shabbat on Fridays and weekly outings - like The Peterson, the beach, In-n-Out, Target, etc. There was also a 4th of July BBQ that families were invited to with entertainment. The view from the rooftop is seriously one of the best views in the city. 360 degrees, you can see from the beach, to downtown, to the Hollywood Sign and Sunset Strip, and back to the beach. The ownership has changed as have the staff. I am underwhelmed by many staff members now who simply don't have answers to many simple questions. Calls are frequently not returned and families often are not told of new changes - such as lack of receptionist or anyone during wee hours of the night. Doors are locked, phone isn't answered... I don't know how I missed submitting my review of CityView earlier, and it's a mistake on my part. My father was a resident of CityView until just before his death in 2018, and moving him there was a great decision for his care. Murielle is awesome. She really knows what she's talking about, and he's not afraid to tell you brutal truths when you need to hear them. I love that about her. She really knows what she's talking about and has the resident's best interests in mind. My father really liked the staff at CityView. They were kind and compassionate when his dementia made him sometimes difficult. They gave him premium care during his stay. Compared to other places in the area, this place is a great value. I have had to look for assisted living for my father and stepmother several times in the last few years. At this point, I know what to shop for. In LA, the options generally fall into two categories: very nice looking and extremely expensive, and passable-to-yucky and less expensive. City View Villa is in a category all its own. Very nicely appointed with good size rooms, this place is quite elegant and upscale without being stuffy. And yet the fees are far less than its fancy competitors. FAR less. At this time, City View is accumulating residents. When they have filled, I expect the fees will go up a bit. This means it's an excellent time to take advantage of the low rates. In addition, there are still rooms to choose from -- you won't be stuck with something. City View is close to Cedars, which is an excellent hospital. Also, there is a physical rehab center right next door, making it easier to transition from hospital, to rehab, to home. When one parent is making that transition, the other can easily visit. The staff are incredible. Professional, patient, kind. I do not have to worry about my parents, I know they are in good hands! The staff are also supportive of me personally, which makes the challenges of helping elderly parents easier. I'd also like to mention a few things that visitors may appreciate. There is good parking. The food is good. And they can rent you a room so you need not stay in a hotel. Being an out of town visitor, I was tickled to see how close City View is to the Hollywood walk of fame and a certain tattoo place made famous by its TV show. Greene March 6, 2011 Recommendation for Cityview Villa and its staff In the past four years I've looked at assisted living options in the Los Angeles area for my father and stepmother many times. Many times. Also within those four years, one of those parents has stayed in three different assisted living residences on an extended respite basis. This experience made me into a savvy consumer, able to sort through the pretty website photos and descriptions and ask the right questions to avoid costly surprises. I also became very well-informed on the options within the area. I found Cityview Villa by chance and feel extremely fortunate to have done so. The residence itself is beautifully appointed yet comfortable. It's easy for residents and guests alike to enjoy some fresh air, not to mention a good view! The rooms are relatively large and nicely painted, suitable for almost anyone's furniture and décor. The dining menu and service are excellent. These things alone normally cost quite a bit more in other area residences. Cityview Villa's staff are wonderful! It's an incredible relief to know my dad and stepmom are well taken care of. This is of course a minimum expectation for anyone with a parent in assisted living. However, without going into detail, considering challenges with one parent in particular the staff's performance is truly stellar. The residence's proximity to Cedars Sinai is a big plus, as is the access to skilled nursing for rehab and higher level of care right next door. (One parent has needed this on a temporary basis. It was so nice that the other could visit frequently.) As the person handling bills, the way that Cityview Villa charges bears mention, too. Again, the cost is extremely reasonable. What's more, it's easy to predict what costs will be from month to month--there are no unhappy surprises and none of the nickel-and-diming I've seen with other residences. Since Cityview Villa is building its community, the number of residents is relatively low at this time. That was yet another stand-out point in their favor as I shopped around. I expected there would be growing pains and there were a few at first. I also knew this was the perfect time to bring my parents in, for two reasons. The first reason was the choice of rooms. It was not only far easier to find rooms they like, they personally benefited from being able to exercise greater control and preference in choosing their rooms. (They chose separate rooms, by the way, which is apparently quite common.) The second reason relates to being part of a community as it grows, rather than joining one that's already well-established. It's less daunting for somewhat shy or reclusive people (which in many ways describes my parents). More outgoing and active people will probably enjoy playing a part in shaping the nature of the community; including day-to-day activities and things that will become Cityview traditions. I highly recommend Cityview Villa for its caring and skilled staff, comfortable and clean residence, and outstanding value. We were thinking of having our 85 year old grandmother live here and so decided to take a tour of the place. The rooms looked nice and the receptionist was very friendly and helpful. Those were the two positive things. The negatives unfortunately greatly outweighed them. Muriel Cochran (spelling may be wrong) had an air about her that I can only describe as chillingly condescending, and I didn't feel as if she was the right person to be in charge of the place, where having a positive, uplifting demeanor is crucial for the residents (and I would assume for the staff as well. ) Upon reading a recent review, I think my intuitions about her and the place were correct. We do not want to risk the chance of placing our beloved grandmother in what sounds like a living hell. We'll keep looking. read more

We considered Cityview, as we needed to find a place for our dad. The food was inedible. The receptionist didn't even greet us when we came in. We heard two residents over the intercom complaining it was their 2nd-3rd calls and no one had showed up to help them. Another resident was trying to escape. I looked up City View on the Department of Social Services website when we got home and it shows a bevy of recent violations and citations for everything from several staff missing criminal clearance and missing current training documents to non-qualified staff administering shots to residents, as well as unlawful evictions and stolen property. I moved into Cityview just over one year ago. I moved here with my wife who at that time had Alzheimer's. She passed away one year ago today, May 31, 2017. I have been here on my own for a year even though I had no pressing need to be in a facility like this, I just liked living here. In the year that I have lived here I have seen the staff be nothing but friendly and caring. This is my home and I love it here. If you are considering Cityview for yourself or a loved one, I encourage you to come and check it out for yourself. Do not be concerned by any negative yelp reviews. There is a very long negative review on this page as I write. But from my personal experience this negative review is totally bogus. There is a reason for this review and most of the other negative reviews, that I'm not going to go into here. I met with, toured, spoke at length with, and even called and spoke to client/family references regarding CityView for the care of my mother. Like everyone else on this site that may be considering a facility I take it very seriously and read all the reviews everywhere and also call references and speak with them at length. I encourage you to do so and to read the data for "City View" on the CA Dept. of Social Services website. It is listed under two words with their address on La Brea and matching License #. There are NO citations. NO complaints. Do not mistake them for other City Views in other cities. In no way did I find this assisted living/memory care facility to be anything but the excellent home with a superior caring staff so predominately spoken of. The Executive Director, Murielle Chocron, was kind, professional, and did not have an "air about her" as some other reviewer stated. It is obvious that Murielle is very intelligent, educated, and knows what she is doing plus she is very compassionate and sincere. I don't know about you but that is the kind of director I want to see where my mother lives. I've now seen and toured over a dozen facilities and my mother has lived at several. Unfortunately, her disease is progressing more than one can imagine so I've had to move her as it progresses. It is heartbreaking. Because the negative reviews did not match what I was hearing or seeing, I decided to do my own research on these negative reviewers themselves. I suspected that they must be coming from the same disgruntled family group and I guess their friends since the date range is exactly the same. And that is when I discovered that 95% of their other Yelp reviews for other establishments (everything from restaurants to store owners to vendors) are beyond negative & critical of everything including the Post Office. This is ridiculous and unfortunate that there are people who find the need to basically slander an establishment for their own enjoyment. To be clear, I very seriously considered CityView and their Memory Care facility. In fact, I was about to move her there. The only reason she isn't is because my mother's doctors just told me they want her now to be at a much smaller residential home with 4-6 residents only as her disease is unfortunately progressing quite quickly. More so than I realized. If this was not the case she'd be there. Do not let the negative reviews mess with your head. It is an excellent facility. Do your research. I highly recommend it. read more

I don't know where to start here. My mother has been happily ensconced at City View since mid-July, and our experience has been SO vastly different from some of the other reviewers that I can't help wondering if they're ready for the memory floor themselves. I mean, seriously. City View employees, without fail, conduct themselves as though they would do their jobs for free; no condescension, no goldbricking, just friendly, loving, attentive, and expert care. My mother says she's never had to pull the cord twice to get help. As for Murielle, the Director, well, she's highly intelligent, with a great sense of humor, and maybe some people find that intimidating. I don't. I just can't believe the accusations flying around on this page and it makes me really upset. Why? Because I don't know how I would have found good care for my mother if it weren't for City View, and I know there are many daughters and sons out there in the same dilemma who might actually read these vindictive comments. Regarding the Director being short (or whatever) with these people, all I can do is laugh because I can't even imagine what kind of hell these people must be putting City View through for her to be anything but soft-spoke, respectful, and kind. Explain my rating: I live at City View and I think it is an exceptionally fine place. I have great care - great care and my physical problems are improving. I am currently a resident at City View. I live just down the hall from Janice P.'s mother. I know her as everyone who lives in this facility knows her. Let me go through her daughter's complaints about City View. They are so far from the truth that I don't understand why the family is causing such problems for this wonderful facility. Janice P starts off by saying that the facility is currently under both state and federal investigations. When she neglected to add is that the investigations are completed and City View passed everything with flying colors and the specific complaints put forth by Janice and her mother have been shown to be untruthful. Janice speaks about the security cameras (three) in her mother's room. What she doesn't tell you is that SHE placed the cameras in her mother's room as well as recording devices so that she could take some small infraction and enlarge it to a big problem. No other residents have found the need to put cameras in their rooms - only your mother. It would seem as if she was intending to cause problems from the beginning of her residency here. The same people who are her caregivers are my caregivers. The same housekeepers who are her housekeepers are my housekeepers. I can leave my purse or my jewelry box out in the open and NOTHING IS EVER TOUCHED. When the housekeepers finish with my room everything is spic and span. I can't understand why she complains about the staff. I have had only ONE unanswered call and that was because it was during shift change and the front desk didn't follow up with the caregivers. The caregivers are some of the kindest and most helpful people I have ever encountered. They will drop by and ask if there is anything that I need. I have a tendency to fall due to physical problems. They are frequently checking on me during the day and night to make sure I am okay. My children have NEVER had to come here because I could not get help from the staff. Dementia/Alzheimer's residents do come to the second floor for meals from time to time. When they do, they are accompanied by a private caregiver who sits with them while they eat and then escorts them back to their special area. As I said - I live down the hall from your mother (about 20 feet) and the screaming and cursing and vile language I hear comes from her room. She is the one who is making the racket. She screams and insults the caregivers - both the employees of City View and the private caregivers that her daughter provides for her. ' Everything I have mentioned so far I know from first hand experience. Since I know nothing of your mother's medical conditions I can't addfess those. As far as problems of residents hitting one another - first of all there is almost always a care givers present during the various activities and games. Your mother frequently started fights with other residents by yelling at them, hitting them, slapping them, or pushing objects on the table at the other residents. Finally - I must add that I decided I needed to be in an assisted living facility at this point of my life due to physical problems. I was the one who searched for the facility and I decided on City View. I am very happy with my choice and would recommend City View to any to asked for my opinion. It is really too bad that you feel you have to say such hateful things about City View. read more

My mother Helen has lived in the City View facility for over a year and we are very pleased with the care and love she's received. . This New Year's Day was her 97th Birthday and we opted to have a party for 18 people. They gave us the 5th floor activities room for 2 hours and it was quite lovely. Spotless, organized, lots of light and privacy. We'd called the day before & asked them to get mother ready with a bath and we arrived 45 minutes before the party to get her ready for the party to find not only had they taken care of the bath but had done her hair and nails, dressed her in beautiful clothes and put on her make up. She looked wonderful. Additionally we were taken by the fact that everyone in the facility seemed to know it was her birthday and they asked about the party and how "she" enjoyed it. I've just finished reading some of the reviews before I wrote this one (the first ever on any social media platform) and do understand that everyone has different experiences and I do respect that they too have the right and place to comment. I felt that for future readers of those considering what we had to when we turned over the care of our beloved mother to others, for us it has been the right decision and we regret only that we hadn't done it sooner. When it was time for my mother to go to an assisted living facility I was very particular in the kind of place I wanted her to live in. I was very stressed and guilt ridden with this difficult task that lay before me. I was very blessed when I found CityView. Not only was it a beautiful and clean facility, but it was filled with friendly staff members and caregivers. The best part was when I met with Murielle Cochran. She gave me a tour of the place, answered all my questions, and made me feel at ease. By the end of my visit I knew this was the right place for my mother. I called Murielle several times that week with more questions and she was always very kind, patient, and helpful. I was very nervous on how I was going to present this move to my mother, so once again I called Murielle for her advice on how to approach this. She gave me a few suggestions which actually made the transition much easier than my husband and I anticipated. She also helped us throughout my mother's move. She met with my mother and was so kind to her. She introduced her to several of the staff and people who live there. It was such a nice experience for all of us especially my mom. My mother has been in CityView now for three months. She's very happy living here. She loves the staff and the caregivers. She enjoys her exercise class, and the activity director Judah is very thorough in his approach to senior care. He conducts the classes with personal attention, patience and professionalism. Judah is the bedtThere are also so many nice people that live there who have welcomed my mother and made here feel so comfortable. Whenever we go to visit my mom we make it a point to stop by and say hello to Murielle. She means a lot to us. It is an emotional experience and Yasmeen is an extremely caring nurse. She always makes time and she understands the importance of searching for solutions that match family's goals and values. Yasmeen is a wealth of resources, knowledge and experience. I have seen her go above and beyond to do the best job and she sets a wonderful example for her medical and caregiving staff. Facility is beautiful. They give you a great price, compared to all the rest. Call backs from management are rare. Administrator is rarely there to give assistance and answer questions, and does not have voice mail to leave a message! They say they will provide transportation, but do not inform you that it's only twice a week, because their (one!!!) EXTREMELY over- tasked maintenance man is also their van driver. I found that their care givers are very friendly, and caring. Food is decent, they have great city views and the neighborhood is nice. I will continue to give further updates. read more

Four years ago, our mom was diagnosed with dementia and we had to find a place for her to live. Our first choice was an epic disaster and mom hated it, so we had to start from scratch. My girlfriend's grandmother is here at city view. All of my experiences there have been wonderful. From the people at the front desk to Murielle, everyone has been helpful and pleasant. When we moved her in, the staff was extremely helpful. They made sure she felt welcome upon arriving and even helped with the boxes. The maintenance staff went out of their way to put up lattice on her balcony(so we wouldn't have to) so her cat will be safe. They also mounted her tv on the wall, again so we wouldn't have to. We moved my mom into CityView at the end of Nov 2016 after relocating her to Los Angeles from Colorado. Retirement, assisted living communities was very foreign to me, but I was quickly educated by Ron Passaro, thepassarogroup.com, he spent time with me and took me on tours to places in West Los Angeles. After touring a few communities, months later when my mom was ready to move, I was informed that the owners of Melrose Place, Gardens of Palms acquired another property on the west side called CityView, (I was considering one of them). When Shirley moved into CityView, it was a difficult adjustment at first for her, coming from living fully independent, driving, moving to a new state, etc., but the staff was so patient with her, accommodating and went far above and beyond their duties to make her feel welcome and adjust to her new environment. I was told that in three months, she would not want to leave once she adjusted and they were right, she has embraced her new home so well, met new friends, loves her daily activities; art classes, jewelry making, working out in the gym, learning Spanish, playing cards, dancing, visiting musicians, artists, outings to the local museums, shopping, game show tapings, plus many more. I have nothing but praise for City View. My Father has been in the memory care unit about a little more than a month. The owners and staff are amazing. We had many choices before picking City View but my mother and I just felt an feeling from everyone who worked at City View and all the people who were currently living there seemed very happy. My dad has Parkinson's which is a very difficult illness and they are very equipped to handle the daily ups and downs. It is much better for him then when he was at home because there are so many social activities. I can't say enough positive things about city view. They have other floors designed just for assisted living with less care and they are nice apartments. Wonderful separate dining room from the memory care unit. The food is wonderful. Family and friends can come and visit and eat. There is a gorgeous roof deck. If you are looking for yourself or a family member please look at City View. The owners own Melrose Gardens too which is supposed to be just as nice. City view is on La Brea and Rosewood and plenty of street and guest parking. We are so thankful we found them. My sister and I moved my mom into CityView after having to relocate her from another facility that didn't work out. Needless to say Murielle made the transition effortless and welcomed my mom with open arms. She has been SO happy since arriving at CityView! The residents have also made her feel extremely welcome and the staff has been super friendly and helpful. Moving my mom into a facility was so hard on my sister and I but now that we see her flourishing with activities and friends her own age, we are confident we made the right decision. My mother is a current resident at City View. She moved in a number of months ago with many of the normal questions you might expect about what this living experience would ​mean​ to her life. She was hopeful and excited​ about the opportunity,​ given the ​beautiful and ​comfortable environment a​s well as​ all the ​wonderful ​people she had met during her multiple tours and visits​ - both staff and residents​. I​ stopped by yesterday​ to see my mom​​, sitting and chatting with her up on the rooftop garden terrace​. She smiled frequently as she gave me a full rundown of her weeks activities.​​ ​What really made me smile though was how much she enjoys and respects the warmth and care she receives from the staff. They all know my mom. They all engage her and have real "human" moments with her - i had truly not anticipated this level of personal connection from an "assisted living" facility. City View is so much more than i had imagined! Murielle (the Executive Director of City View) has assembled an amazing group of people who clearly enjoy their job and are eager to make the residents feel vibrant and comfortable.
