While doing research for my book Forgotten Restaurants& Stores of Vancouver and Portland, I was recommendeded to check out businesses that lasted 10 plus years. While doing this I was lead to Kazoodles Toys. Which ironically is having their 20th birthday party. Was extremely excited to find out how a business lasts 20 years through the ups and downs of an uncertain economy. When I walked in I was greeted not only once but twice. Which was great customer service on their part. Thats where it went downhill. When asked what brings me in, I told them it was my first time in and doing some research. The mood shifted probably because I'm an adult that didn't happen to have his kids with him at the time. Which for me is a rare treat. My daughter Emma just happened to be at a friend's birthday party. The air shifted, forced smiles, the friendliness turned into awkward, forced conversations and felt like I just became cringe worthy. Think of people on the Epstein list. Unsure of what caused this shift, but couldn't get out of there fast enough. Even felt forced to make a purchase which I did. Would not recommend Kazoodles. How they lasted 20 years is a mystery to me. They don't even deserve a footnote in my book. I recommend going to Thinker Toys or Kids at Heart Toys in Portland. Sure it's a drive but worth it. Take notes on their Customer service and maybe you'll last another 20 years. read more

Lets get this out of the way: I'm an adult and I collect Jellycat Amuseable food plushies with no shame. These plushies are adorable, well made, and cuddly. Who doesn't like looking at an adorable plush that smiles at you? I was on the hunt for the Blushing Egg to complete my amuseables boiled egg family. Well, the store by chance had it! Ordering online is simple and the check out is so simple. I added another little guy - the mini Clementine (affectionately now named Carlitos the Clementine) to the cart as well because, why not? I called to see if my husband could pick up the plushies on his way home from work despite the order being under my name. The person that picked up the phone was super nice and assured me that it's okay if my husband picks it up. I'm happy to support a local toy shop by purchasing more Jellycat plushies in the future. read more

This store is so cute! The sign on the door says all the staff is fully vaccinated but they still wear masks to keep all the little ones safe. How adorable is that! We stopped in on a weekday evening maybe 45 mins before close and the staff was friendly and accommodating. They greeted us and said hello to the baby too! They directed us whenever we needed assistance and gave us room to explore. My little guy is only 1 and this was his first time in a toy store where he could actually walk around and see things. There was lots to see! The store is well laid out and organized into sections of different types of toys. All the brands I checked out were great! They carry some classics like Melissa & Doug & then lots of other brands that were new to me! There stuffed animal section in the front had Jellycat branded toys which are our absolute favorite! I was so excited to see such an awesome selection. This place is really fun and I can't wait to stop in again with my little babe. read more

I just visited this store with my four year old nephew. I cannot tell you how happy, in a world where EVERYTHING seems to only come in an Amazon box, that this little gem of a sole proprietorship exists. This cozy and inviting store is full of toys that beckon young hands. To the store's credit, children are invited to do exactly that - experience the toys on offer with their own hands. There is even a rewards program. This day, my relative returned a toy as it was not a match for the family's needs. The return process was pleasant and straightforward. To boot, the rewards program meant that my nephew got a new red ambulance for no money out of pocket. As long as stores like this exist, America will flourish. Play well, my friends! read more

I'm a bit of a black sheep in the family in that I am one of the few that has not pursued an occupation in the education field. This decision is predominately because I have almost always found small kids sticky, middle schoolers crass, and teenagers awkwardly arrogant (not to mention taller than me.) So it would be pretty obvious that I don't typically locate myself in places that are teeming with these little humans. I am however always intrigued by Kazoodles. Man there is cool stuff here. It's a toy store for "kid powered toys" aka, educational, creative blocks, books, games, and activities that require imagination and intelligence. I can appreciate how they have a huge selection of stuff from floor to ceiling for kids from infant to teen. It's amazing that adults seem to have just as much fun here as the intended merchandise recipients. And a toy store where you can actually play with the stuff is a pretty obvious but surprisingly absent concept in the area. When I finally get around to having kids of my own someday (or a least some cool nieces and nephews running around my totally awesome -yet has take all the time away from my childbearing years- house) I hope this store will still be around. read more

This is an awesome toy store tucked into a questionable looking strip mall in the Couve. I wandered in here a few months ago when I had some time to kill and I am so happy that I did. I just went in yesterday, in fact, to get started on Christmas shopping for my 6 year old and almost three year old. The store has a great lay-out and it easy to take it all in by starting at the front for younger kiddos and meandering to the back and up the other side. The staff is as great as the toy selection. They are friendly and VERY knowledgeable about the items they stock. Because it is a smaller space, I can tell they do their research to get the best selection. I loved some of the puzzles for young kids and I bought one that I think my three year old will get a lot of enjoyment from. Lots of science kits for older kids. Cool dress up stuff. Folkmanis puppets and Calico Critters are the best toys known to mankind. I love that Kazoodles always has a great variety and has what I need of both in stock whenever I am in. I love the varied board games and the fun puzzle balls that my niece and nephew totally adore. I think the frequent shopper rewards cards really set this store apart from other high quality toy stores out there in the world, that and the customer service. The ladies here are always fun, friendly and they remember what I come in for and let me know if something new just came in I might be interested in. The BEST place for holiday shopping in my family. I haven't been to Kazoodles in a couple of years. First, upon entering, there was a retractable black post. There wasn't that much room to stand inside the door and wait for someone to unhook it so I could come in. The lady made a comment that they borrowed the idea from another retail store. Having this barrier right at the door was the very uninviting. I almost didn't want to come in. Then, when I was done browsing, I forgot about the barrier across the door and ended up ducking underneath. The store clerk quickly runs over and said she would have done that for me. At that time, I made a comment that having a barrier right at the door is annoying. She said until kids are vaccinated, they will keep it up. After I left, I saw a couple walking in and they had to scrunch by the door waiting for someone to let them in. This concept is ridiculous! This has turned me off from Kazoodles. I ended up going to Portland to Kids at Heart and gave them my business instead. read more

The other aspect that wins me over to Kazoodles is that many of the products they offer usually are from sustainable sources, from other small and independent producers, are intellectually stimulating, or support some other socially worthy idea. As a mental health counselor, I love going to Kazoodles. In my work, one of the things that I use is a sandtray and I have needed to purchase a wide assortment of miniature figures to use in the sandtray. Kazoodles has been a perfect place to find all sorts of miniatures. I love that they sell a lot of Safari Ltd TOOB toys individually so that you don't have to purchase a whole TOOB or you can buy multiples of one particular figure. Beyond TOOBS, they have a lot of other small toys that are perfect fidgets. They also have a good assortment of hand puppets that seem to be of good quality. Overall, I love going to Kazoodles to see what new things they have. I always end up leaving with something to use at work! read more

I really like this store a lot. I'm from Vancouver but currently live in Seattle, so I don't get to go there often. But whenever I'm in town I try to stop by. My husband and I are expecting our first and they have a lot of sweet little things that are very tempting :) I have yet to find a stuffed animal that wasn't "the softest I've ever held", and the games in the back left corner are all really fun. This past Christmas I scoured online reviews and games discussions to find the perfect portable word game that my parents would like, but that they could also play with their 9 year old granddaughter. I finally found the perfect game but had a really hard time purchasing it, finally ending up paying a ton for shipping on Amazon. They love the game... and I found that Kazoodles carries it! If only I'd thought ahead of time to check their store I would have saved a lot of money and been able to support a locally-owned shop. Ultimately, I highly recommend Kazoodles. I love to shop locally owned small businesses when I can as I think they have so much to offer. They had wonderful customer service, knew their products, and had great recommendations.
