I am so glad I did a little looking and learned about this children's store in Portland. And then made the trip up from Eugene with mom and baby in tow instead of talking myself out of it! The woman who was at the store--the owner, I think, based on our conversation--was friendly and super helpful. She knows her merchandise inside and out. She carries clothing here that I've never seen before at the children's stores I usually visit in the Chicago area (I've already told the owner of one of them that she needs to look into these brands!). I really appreciated that she explained the sizing system since I was a bit perplexed at first (maybe she saw my confusion)--since some are brands based in other countries, they're sized by centimeter but the American sizing equivalent is on the back of the tag (though can we talk about that cm/in sizing system for a moment, because it would make my life infinitely easier when trying to buy kid clothes....) Almost the moment I walked into the shop I zeroed in on this adooooorable pantsuit for my daughter, and a darling dress. I'm buying a little larger for her since she's a high percentile child and I'm looking forward to seeing her in these when she's big enough to wear them. They also sell local goods--I bought a Portland-themed t-shirt for the babe. I asked about a local shoe company I'd heard of that listed BW as a retailer and though they don't carry that brand any longer, she showed me a different local brand they carry called Ozznek (which has super cool shoes with removable soles!!) and I bought two pair for my little. This lovely little store was worth the visit; I will definitely return and I'm keeping an eye on their socials. I think they ship as well so between that and stopping in when I'm home visiting my mom I can keep my babe in cool duds. Parking is on the street, and it was easy for me in late morning/early afternoon on a Thursday, but I'm not sure if they have any parking lots or garages for visitors to Portland's Boise neighborhood. read more

This store has such a great selection of cloths for kids, I've bought several items as my Goddaughter grows up - my only complaint is that they don't usually carry MY size. Also, the owner is keen to stock the store with items that are good for the environment and your little one will not grow out of the educational toys and books they have. read more

We got our niece her 2nd bday gifts from the Black Wagon kids online store. Living in Salem we wanted to support local. I also wanted to find a place that was offering quality cotton, and sustainably sourced and conscious items. Black Wagon has great variety of clothing, accessories, toys etc! Their clothing is unique and with beautiful prints, colors and styles. We got her a cute dress with animal print, a fuzzy bear purse and an interactive toy. She loved all her gifts! Especially the bear purse! In addition to the store selections the customer service was great! We initially accidentally put the wrong shipping address for our order and we called and they were so patient and fixed the problem on the spot. This is a great local gem! read more

A delightful children's store with heart. I fell in love with Black Wagon years ago and today they have become part of my community. Wonderful toys, clothes and staff, I know when I go to them I'll find unique gifts that ALWAYS delight the little ones. A very cool kid spot! I don't have 'em, but it's in the plan. If you have 'em, you have a finely tuned sense of mystery of what they are interested in. If you don't, you are dependent upon fine shopkeepers, like these, to narrow that mysterious infinity to the perfect gift. By the way, test children's books by reading them aloud yourself in any store. If words pop up that would be embarrassing to explain, the age is wrong. I bought a book at another store on the universe, based on the age suggested on the cover, only to have to edit on the fly, reading aloud, a description of the big bang as an "orgy of particles" for 5 year old twins. It's not Toy's R Us. It's a selected collection of cool toys, books, clothes, even art, for kids and their adult companion guides. Individualistic, Portland design community-friendly, unique. Brilliant staff advice to figure things out. If you are interested in art suggestions for the kid room or kid-friendly art around home, this is the best single spot in town. read more

Such a fun shop on Mississippi. I brought my friend who has 2 boys (4&7yrs). We were promptly greeted in the shop and felt welcomed. We found so many great things. The staff is super friendly and helpful with suggestions. My friend left with a pair of shoes, a great big ocean floor puzzle, a poop game and likely other treasures I've forgotten. Highly recommend this shop- they have THE BEST kids stuff AND unique fun clothes and shoes. BONUS- if you check in with yelp you get a discount. We saved almost 10$. Such a win! read more

Cute little store,but don't be surprised to be price gouged. I am a sleep deprived mamma who wanted to buy a gift for a special little boy. They recommended the Beleduc Your Body Puzzle - Boy. I am the sucker who had no idea the value the puzzle. Now, doing my homework, I find the puzzle RETAILS for $19.99, and sold to me for $28.00. I like to support local business, but to pay ~30% above retail it too rich for my blood. The employee was right, in that my friend's son loved the puzzle she recommended. Disappointed! We love shopping at small, boutique neighborhood shops with our kids and did not enjoy this shop. While it sells kid stuff it did not seem to actually be kid friendly. My almost 3 year old was excited and wanted to touch everything but the lady behind the counter today was so obviously annoyed and when my daughter hid under one of their tables she said "let me handle it" moved me to the side. My daughter is just a little kid. The lady was eying us the whole time. I even purchased something for my son's birthday and while looking for something else to add to the gift, she just rung up the price and told me urgently what my total was. Finally as we are leaving I'm still browsing but she walks over and holds the door open for us to leave Worst kids store experience. read more

Love this place! If you don't have kids, but need to score something unique for the kids in your life this is the perfect place to go. You'll find good quality toys and books, and killer t-shirts for the tiny human set. It can be difficult to find something special for older kids too but they have you covered - they have science kits, irreverant books, books that can teach stuff without you really realizing it. It's also cool to find gifts that don't involve a glowing screen. And sometimes stuff that I *mean* to give as gifts that somehow never leaves my house. ooops! The store on Mississippi is petit but well organized. And if you just can't figure it out, the staff is super friendly and not pushy at all. Before I got down to my blurry tour of Portland last night, I had some time to trip around Mississippi Avenue, a hubbub of activity buzzing with character. If you have little ones or ever find yourself shopping for any, Black Wagon -- which began first as an online entity and has since graduated to a full blown brick and mortar room -- is a grand place to track down that diversion most kids never knew that they always wanted. They were celebrating their sixth anniversary when I happened in, so I'd rather expect that a photo booth, commissioned art of children, and some adult libations aren't always part of the equation. That said, my favorite section was actually the book selection, featuring the Go The **** To Sleep tome and it's follow up, Seriously, Go To Sleep. I buried myself in that one for awhile and jibed with every exasperated parent: it's the kind of night time reading that makes sense of what Louis CK notes about his kids: they're lovable, but exhausting. It's not a very big shop so chances are it won't take you long to nose around, but the staff seemed on point and eager to help without waxing omnipresent. In all, it's always nice to find a spot that does what they intend to do well, and with a little levity besides. read more

Winning my award for the best check-in offer ever! Walking down the street with Yelp app in hand, I discovered a check in offer worth checking out. $10 off any purchase. Say what!? Activity books, cute hair clips and a whole slew of toys, Black Wagon was blowing my mind. Secretly I wished for more of my friends to have babies so I could buy the tikes some more toys. It's a small, quaint store that feels like someone has really taken the time to hand select toys and clothes that mom's (and aunts) would approve of. If I lived here, I'd probably do most of my little one shopping here. They do have an online shopping and they ship to Canada... so perhaps I will be doing some virtual spending before the day is done! Raddest part? The baby announcement posters behind the cash desk. Black Wagon has been an online retailer for awhile, providing adorable edgy clothing for the hippest of hip kids. Only recently have they opened their "flagship" store on North Mississippi, and now the neighborhood children will get even cooler. This kid boutique is for those adorable Portland kids whose parents outfit them in locally made and desgined clothing with cute silkscreen designs. Picture your three year old in a Che Guevara shirt. Absolutely LOVEE this kids boutique!!!!! They sell quality organic (chemical free) clothing, books & toys. I'm a parent who really REALLY cares about what my kid eats, wears & so on. They also carry locally made items created by local artists & that's so amazing! The owner is VERY kind, helpful, knowledgeable & attentive. She was very hands on with my toddler (son), showing him the toys, letting him handle the stuffed animals - allowing him to be a child in a very cool/ vibrant child's shop. Somewhere along the way the superstore was born. Like every other corporate giant big box store selling mostly cheap crap, these stores cannot provide you with much of anything worth your dollar (they lack customer service, safe toys, toys that stimulate cognitive development in children, quality clothes, etc.). Thankfully, Black Wagon is here to help save the day! While it is small in size, they make up for it with the most amazing staff, excellent advice, and totally cool stuff. On our most recent trip to Black Wagon I was so pleased by the staff's reaction to my boy (a 5 year old not very verbal kiddo with Autism) whose excitement is displayed with clapping, hopping, and some vocalization that sounds like hooting/singing. They treated both my son and my 8 year old with kindness and respect. I've been to another local store over on Alberta where the staff seems inconvenienced by our presence (seems odd for a toy store right?). We all had fun exploring the fantastic hand crafted wood toys, checking out the awesome selection of shoes (all which were too small for our kids - but that wasn't what we were looking for) and of course we feasted our eyes on the fantastic quality clothes that would make any kid look uniquely cool. We tried out the awesome wood toys (including a rubber band powered race car & a bungee powered catapult that hurls a small bean bag) and fell in love with these simple yet imaginative toys. Prices for quality kid stuff may shock you. If you are on a big mac budget then you'll be shocked by the price tag but then you often get what you pay for right? We'll be back again and again! For my nephews birthday I drove around to a least half a dozen kids stores in Portland trying to find a gift. Black Wagon had the best costumer service by a land slide. The woman who worked there was very helpful (I don't know anything about kids toys) and I left with great gift! A teeny tiny show but with super cute stuff and always a really nice staff! Came into town with our one week's notice to adopt our first child and the woman working there was just wonderful. She was genuine, helpful without hovering, and knew the products really well and had some great ideas, and even offered to give me a free diaper bag that had been returned because they couldn't resell it (we already had one so passed, but it was a lovely thought). We've been through a lot trying to start our family with so many false starts, and this was the only store that I went to during an entire day in Portland that was attentive to customers. read more

A place where rock stars buy clothing for their children, or so I've heard. This place has been on-line for quite some time and recently opened their "flagship" store in the Mississippi district. There are other children's boutiques around town, but this one has something special. Perhaps the great selection of little lark tees or maybe the black pirate hoodies. I personally love the Paul Frank cords I just bought. Friendly customer service and a play area for the little ones makes for a pleasant shopping experience. read more

This place is so appropriately trendy and cute for the area. Some local made toys, some higher end stuff, and a super sweet helpful sales girl who did not mind our browsing around and taking our time looking at everything. A lot of things in here will cost you a pretty penny, but it's a specialty shop so don't come in here thinking you will save a buck or two! Today I wondered into this sweet store with my daughter who is 2. Found some amazing shoes for summer and I asked the gal that welcomed us into the store if I could get a size 5 and how much they were. She found the shoes and then said they were $35.00, perfect I'll take them. Proceeded to check out and then she informs me that in fact the shoes are $60. She should have asked her manager first so there was no miscommunication about the price or honored the $35 that she said first. read more

I had been spying into the window of this boutique for many months, thinking - as a childless person, that I would never have an occasion to shop at this lovely place. When a baby shower invitation came my way, the first place I thought of was Black Wagon. I actually got pretty excited having a reason to shop there. I bought a hand screen decorated onesie with the image of a cute hotdog and mustard or ketchup bottle. The expectant mother went nuts for it! So did the hipsters in attendance. I knew they'd have to love it as much as I did. Then I had to get something for my 12 year old niece. I didn't think I could make it work at Black Wagon, but they had a fashionable tshirt printed with a lion that was just large enough for her. She is a cat fanatic and loved it! Plus she looked beautiful wearing the shirt. This has become my go to place for any baby and children's gifts, I'm really glad to have it in my arsenal. Plus I like to shop local. I always love looking at the decor and artwork on the walls, and I think they have really good taste, it just makes me happy to be in their store! read more
