Sometimes we all have to admit that we have a prejudice bone in our body... And when you see the all American magic shop crammed into a dying mall, you think I don't know if this new venture is going to last... After talking with the owner and one of his good friends it was a customer that like hanging around I realize that he has been a huge part of the local magic community for probably longer than I've been alive. So, in that case it's not a new venture, but instead one cemented into the culture, trying to save a once thriving mall. He demo'd a bunch of tricks and addressed some previous magic tricks we had seen over the years. We got a few 'joke scratch offs' and repeaked my interest in flash paper and cotton... even purchase some upcoming tickets to a future Magic show... I am not sure how anything is going to survive in the Lloyd Center these days but I really hope it comes back because I really used to enjoy the Lloyd Center and the ice rink in the mall filled with shops... This place is a wealth of knowledge and a wealth of fun if you've had some kids and you even remember the days when magic was magical to you come in and check this place out have some fun have a book a few tricks for the kids because I know it was a huge part of my life growing up ! read more

Accidentally wandered to this store, and very happy I did. The owner and his buddy were kind, welcoming and honestly showed me some tricks that my mouth fell open, and stayed open. Maybe it's nostalgic as my dad did some magic tricks when I was growing up and he passed? Not sure but I will tell you it absolutely made my day better. The owner wanted to show my children his magic tricks and wanted us to watch his show. He was friendly enough until we declined to watch his show because we had to leave. He expressed his dissatisfaction by stating, "parents can be stupid because they dont want their children to learn magic" I understand that you have a business to support, but you will not attract customers by talking down on them. Everyone has their bad days and i probably caught the owner on a bad day. Regardless this is unacceptable behavior. Zero stars, if I could. Came to the kiosk for a sleeve bouquet. But I could not in good conscience spend any money as they also happen to sell trump 2020 crap. They sell trump toilet paper also *golf clap, I guess*, but maybe if you're the last magic shop in Oregon, you should take a more responsible stance and not sell hate symbols. What does that have to do with magic or jokes anyway? It's not funny. Trump merch is a symbol of oppression and violence. Something for everybody you know! I'll never spend a penny at a place that chooses to stock hate merch. This shop needs a public relations consultant, stat. Maybe if this place took more care into being less politically divisive, they would do better, but those hats at the front of the counter will dissuade lots of potential customers, as I was. Stink, stank, stunk. Never going back. Edit: After posting this review, the owner has been sending me lengthy, rude messages. I offered my opinion and education about product selection to the public, a review... Incredibly unprofessional and unbecoming. My wife and I have visited this shop 3 times now and will keep coming back. I originally came into the shop to see what kinds of playing cards they stock. I have searched the Portland area for a local place to buy cards from since I collect them. There really hasn't been many options until I found this store. I spoke with Mark at the store about playing cards for a bit and he was able to show me a few rare decks he had for sale. Mark is super friendly and very passionate about magic I can tell. He even did a few magic tricks for us and we were both amazed. He mentioned if I saw a deck online that I liked, he could try and order it for me. This is extremely nice since online shipping fees can add up. I have already recommended this shop to a few people and I will continue to do so with anyone I meet that might be interested. I originally came into the shop for cards, but my last visit I got a magic trick to learn. This store follows the magician's code which is really cool and adds mystery to the craft as it deserves. Mark was really good about giving hints and tips about the trick I got. So now I am confident I have what I need to learn the trick myself and go back there and show him. The shop has a wealth of knowledge about magic in form of several books / dvds and Mark himself. This is super exciting and was not expecting to be learning magic! Not only did my wife and I get some nice playing cards and a magic trick, we also got advice on things to do on our upcoming Vegas trip. Also, because of another suggestion from Mark, we bought tickets to see Jason Latimer, World Champion of Magic at the OMSI on Saturday. We have not yet been to the Magic Theater part of the shop, but we plan on going to an event as soon as we can. Found this little kiosk while searching for something new and unique to do with my nephews..... a MAGIC show? I was down to give 'em a shot and check it out. The kiosk [not really a store] is full of all sorts of things... from books about doing magic, to videos, to props. We had a blast checking everything out... I'm sure there's LOTS of good info here if you're a beginning magician. Plus- they offer lessons! We checked out the show as well, and it was definitely worth the money. Bought tickets a few days before, and got there early.... and glad we did! There was a local magician as well as an outta towners, and both were great for different reasons. The local magician had more gimmicky stuff, but was HYSTERICAL and the kids [young and old] loved him. He had me laughing so hard there were tears... good times. The outta town guy [forgive the lack of names, my brain is too full for details like that] was a bit more wow-y/smooth, also entertaining and had some pretty sweet tricks up his sleeve. Overall? Great shop, great show, a pretty sweet way to spend the afternoon. We'll definitely be back for more! Note: great for kids, cash only, buy tickets and show up early to get good seats! read more

Owner is cool and knowledgeable. Starts you out learning properly with small stuff to build to big tricks because there are things like angles, patter, presentation, confidence that takes time to develop. If you dont have patience and a true understanding to protect the art of magic then you're not cut out for it. But if it's what you want to learn and develop then this shop can guide you to your goal. Lots of jokes and pranks. A mountain of magic knowledge and a very entertaining show and experience galore at shop. Great with teaching kids and adults. Allowing you to break out of the shell and have fun! P.s. to the person pushing political garbage in your review. You prove you only see the surface because there is both sides of the aisle represented there and remember someones beliefs doesnt end where your opinion and I stress your opinion begins. Fun family-oriented magic show! Took my nearly-6-year-old to this and she had a total blast. That's how I'm evaluating it - the goal was for her to have fun and Scott & Mark really knocked it out of the park. There is tons of audience participation and some fun prizes. They did magic with both kids and adults. As someone else wrote, don't expect Vegas production quality, but it's definitely professional. And considering what you pay, it's a steal. And I appreciate their dollar popcorn and drinks - you really get the sense that they're doing this mostly out of love for the art. Scott's strength was his ventriloquism and comedy routines. Mark did some of the "big" prop magic - levitation, swords through a box with his assistant inside, etc. - and also some mentalism/card tricks. It's comparable to what you see on TV magic shows, but much more casual and closer. It's a local magic show and every child I saw in the audience was smiling. The show says 2pm but actually started at 2:10, however you want to be there early so you can sit closer to the front, which gives you more of a chance of volunteering. There's an intermission halfway through which is long enough to walk down to the mall restrooms. read more

My family and I went here for my Birthday and had a wonderful time. It was a real treat. Hilarious, interactive,and just all around a great outing. We got called up on stage, I am still amazed by the joining rings trick! I tried to very hard unjoin them. Well done.I even won a while PIZZA at the end of the show LOVED the balloon motorcycle!! The room was PACKED! I Admired how they let the littles sit up front by the stage on the floor. There was one little boy who was very defiantly not listening as the magician on the stage tried to explain the safety rules, that child would NOT listen...Where the heck were that child parent? Was a great value price wise as we bought the family pack of 5 and all our snacks were included. GREAT VALUE THERE Lastly, I REALLY enjoyed meeting the staff, magicians, and the crew for pictures after the show. They ALL LOVE what they do, and it is reflective in the in the audience joy. The only suggestion I would make is that they need a bigger space! People are loving THE ALL AMERICAN MAGIC SHOW, so much, they have just outgrown the space! I had seen Magic Mark at Pizza Schmizza in downtown Portland perform some mind blowing magic tricks and was so impressed that I suggested my office (I work for Burgess Plastic Surgery) book him for an event honoring our breast cancer reconstruction patients. We are SO glad we did because it made the night so much fun! Magic Mark did some walking magic at our event for about an hour and it was some of the best money ever spent. He is friendly, energetic, and his tricks are amazing. None of us could figure out these tricks (they are not amateur at all). He left us wanting more and some of us will now be going to his live shows. I can't wait to book him again for another event. He would be great for a party or work event. Upon first entering the world of Magic I was just 12 and mystified. I went on to doing small time shows from 13 to 15 years old. I was not only astonished but also engaged by the professionalism and unabashed showmanship of All American Magics show and ability to appeal to all ages and levels of Magicianship... Scott is a unmatched ventrillouquist that brings laughter and, yes, tears to the whole audience. The assistants are provacative females that render enigmatic stigma to all the illusions. Mark Benthimer is deft at provoking participation with the selected audience members and astounding them with the stolid art of veteran Magicianship. I took my 14 year old to buy shoes at Mall 205 Famous Footwear. It was Mother son date day, with a quick errand to start off with. While there we decided to try the magic show that started at 2:00 pm. I was very impressed. Scott Davis was wonderful with the kids. He blended wonderful comedy with amazing magic tricks that were great for the children in the audience. He kept the parents engaged with his fast talking, and quick whitted jokes. Some for the kids, and some for the adults. Mark Benthimer is a wonderful magician and truly professional performer. As the owner of the magic theater, he informed me that they also offer magic classes to all ages. He is not the only teacher, he brings in other magicians from all over to teach the classes. He is very dedicated to his profession, to magic, theater, and comedy. There were kids in the audience that talked back to Scott making the show even funnier. Scott has a magical way with children. He stayed after the show for over 30 minutes making free balloon animals for everyone who wanted one. From three year old children to adults, including me! My son got an ET made out of balloons that would amaze you. This show is definitely worth the money, and definitely worth an afternoon with your kids. When we decided to go to the magic show, I think my son was a little worried that it would be cheesy, or too young for him. He laughed a lot, and after it was over he told me he enjoyed it a lot. The show was great, and you could easily see the passion and professionalism of the performers from the sound guy, to the ladies who help, and all the way up to the top. read more

I LOVED this show; it is just a great time for families to enjoy together -- super fun and hilarious for everyone! I brought my 7 year old daughter along with one of her friends and we all had such a blast. We were completely engaged and laughing for the entire 2 hour show and none of us wanted it to end! The passion of the magicians and their staff radiated with absolute joy -- it was clear they loved to make people smile and laugh with such a wonderful show. Magician Mark Benthimer and his assistant Amber Catlin were fantastic; his tricks made me a bit awe-struck. Also, I loved it when he shredded the $50 bill -- sooo funny! Magician Scott Davis was amazing with his balloon work, the full-sized Harley he created was MIND-BLOWING. His ventriloquism act was great as well -- I was practically crying he made me laugh so hard with his dialogues LoL! His assistant, Angela Davis, was just STUNNING! She had such warmth and beauty in her stage presence that, at the end of the show, all of the children instantly ran up to her to say hi and she was so incredibly friendly. My daughter was so excited to meet her and just wanted to hold her hand and have me take a picture with her! To end, this show was a great value and lots of fun. My only suggestions of how it could be improved upon further would be to add a roll-out carpet on the front floor where all the kids sit, as well as make sure the balloons at the end of Scott's act are moved to the back of the room and out of the way prior to Mark's act, as all the little kids in the front couldn't help being distracted with them so close by. Overall, this show is absolutely FANTASTIC -- I look forward to seeing it again! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!! read more

Really odd sales guy. Told him that I wanted a really good trick that did not take much skill. I was prepared to spend $20-60 for one trick. I told him I had lots of tricks at home. So he started showing me stuff that, not only did I have but they were cheap little kid tricks. He did perform them well. But I did had them. Then he showed me another trick. I said I had that trick if it was the kind where.... And was not interested if it was that kind. He would not tell me or show me if it was that kind or not. He asked if I had Svengali deck. i said yes. And then he proceeded to try to sell that to me. At one point he looked up at me and said it looked like I was not paying attention. I was not and was looking for a way to escape before he showed me another kiddie trick that I have had already. Over the past 40 years this is the only time I have walked out of a magic shop without having bought anything. Very frustrating. read more

I live on the west side, but I bring my 7-year-old son to Mall 205 monthly for Home Depot kids projects (because it's near PDX Metro Arts!) and an occasional gyro at Ozzie's. We've noticed the magic shop before, but were never aware of a show schedule. So, when Metro Parents PDX listed a show scheduled for this weekend, I thought we'd try it out. When we got to the theater, we were sent to the other end of the mall to buy our tickets and return. The gentleman selling tickets was very confused. He kept telling me that children under 13 cost $8, but that since my son was "8 years old", he was free. Not wanting to run back across the mall twice, I explained that was wrong, and even added the $14 adult and $8 child prices for him. When we arrived back at the theater, our tickets were ripped, our hands were stamped (why? we had ticket stubs), and I was asked to fill out a form to win a pizza. As we entered the 'theater', they announced that the show would start in 2 minutes, and then it went almost completely dark. My son made his way up to the floor in front of the stage, and I squinted to find a seat. If the show doesn't start for 2 minutes, why not leave the lights on until seconds before the show? In fact, why turn the lights off at all? It didn't add to the show. The 'theater' was a shop with a hard floor, and rows of wooden chairs on casters that rolled around every time I shifted my weight. In fact, my seat had two chairs, so every time I shifted, the stranger sitting next to me rolled around, too. I was about 6 or 7 rows back, and had to lean into the aisle for a decent view. The room was very warm. The first magician, Scott, was a poor showman (even by his own admission). He cracked himself up, and was kind of creepy. He used a stage microphone, and it was hard to hear him every time he stepped away from it. His act seemed more like a series of ads for store merchandise than entertainment. The second magician, Mark, wore a microphone, and was a much more polished presenter (not saying much). At times, he seemed to be trying very hard to recall the list of tricks he had planned to do. There was an intermission after one hour, at which point we were encouraged to buy concessions. Then both magicians made another appearance, and the show lasted another 45 minutes. Several people were called up from the audience, and by the end of the show, I was pretty sure I was the only non-shill in the room. Earlier in the day, we went to the Lloyd Center for their Easter program, and were surprised to learn that Presto the Magician was performing. SO much better! Aside from the fact that Presto's show was $22 cheaper (well, for us - the mall paid for it, obviously), he had the kids in the stitches, performed many of the same tricks (eg, silly wands, ropes) MUCH better, and his show just flowed. His show was good, he didn't even need to turn the lights off. I have no idea if All-American is any good as a magic shop. But I would not come back for a show. read more

This place is fantastic! I went to get some gags last April Fools, and recently returned for some magic tricks. The proprietor is the real deal and was generous with some lessons and demonstrations. Visiting here one time is more worthwhile than watching a thousand how to videos. read more

When I first became in touch with the magic store I found a place where I was comfortable & Mark has always been friendly & friendly. He intrusted to me one of his thoughts & that was that a show like his is a form of entertainment to adults but if you get a child interested in magic you have created the beginings of a true magician. After reading the good reviews, I took our children, 9 & 5, to see this show. I should have been suspicious since it was at Mall 205, a deserted, tacky location. It was a disappointment. The room was filled with metal folding chairs which became more uncomfortable as the show noisily dragged on. It started 15 minutes late. The stage was flimsy, the first act was moderately talented but spent way too much time talking, especially to the adults with sarcastic wisecracks. His act would have been much more effective if he talked less and just got us caught up in the magic. The worst part was his racist references and imitations of an Asian magician. Very tasteless. The frequent quips about "balls in your pocket" were juvenile. The ventriloquism portion was good. The rings trick was good. It all dragged on so long, mostly talk and no magic, that the kids were restless. The main act was slightly differently gifted, but much of the same chat to adults which weakened the punch of any magic. The adult tickets weren't cheap, $14 each and $8 for the children. It was a waste of money. I don't know who has written such positive reviews, but I can't agree. It's too bad these guys don't tighten up their act and make it move with less words and more mystery and awe. We need a magic show here. read more

This place is Ok. There was a much better one in Janzen Beach that went out of business a few years ago, and one even better than that in downtown Portland which is also sadly out of business. The selection at the kiosk is limited. There is another shop in Vancouver that has about 20 times the selection of merchandise, I'd say who it was but don't want to advertise for anyone in particular. read more
