there's only one radio station i bother to program into both my car and home stereos and it's KCRW. in my opinion, there's almost nothing else worth listening to on the airwaves. the music is topnotch, the reporting is mostly good (i'm not really a warren olney fan) and the national contributions are excellent, i'm particularly fond of radiolab, planet money and the moth. also, as a member of the station, there are endless perks to being a $50+ annual donor. at that level KCRW gives you a fringe benefits card that allows you access to fabulous deals all over the city, such as 20% off at certain bars/restaurants or 2-for-1 admissions to many cultural institutions, it's a fantastic way to reward your donation to the station. so listen to KCRW and don't forget to support them! read more

I see that KCRW is now offering a Groupon for half off its membership, plus a t-shirt or one of those ubiquitous hoodies favored by people who like to keep their faces from public view. How ironic for a purported public radio station: first, they charge "dues," despite the tax and grant dollars they receive, and second, that they feel the need to go into that dreaded capitalist markeplace they're always bad-mouthing to compete for even more bucks. I have been listening to KCRW for ten years now. I love it! It's the only radio station that I will listen to. Listening on-line is also a good thing. For some odd reason I can't pick up the station on my home stereo. The website is good as well... If I am looking for a show I click on their calender link. If I heard a song played in the 10 O'clock hour and want to find out who it is I click on their play-list link which shows hour by hour what was being played. I know KPCC is bigger, has a larger signal area, and generally carries more public-affairs programming; but when I'm in L.A. and want to listen to NPR, I tune to KCRW. Why? Because it's less corporate sounding, seems to have more interesting local shows, and has pretty interesting music. Stuff I'd actually listen to if it weren't on NPR. read more

KCRW is not anything special in a NPR radio station. Most of the talent left 10-15 years ago, with encouragement from "management" (whoever they may be.) They do BEG WELL AND OFTEN (BUT THAT OTHER NPR STATION IN PASADENA AREA BEATS THEM HANDS DOWN FOR SOPHISTICATED BEGGING!) Someone must be raking in the $$$. But my biggest GRIPE is the extremely limited reception range. Today I bought a new "head unit" for my wife's car to hopefully improve their reception. ($350 bucks) She likes to listen to their "news" on the way home from work -- but with the old unit it was cutting in and out, and picket-fencing. Annoying to her. But the new unit does not improve reception since we are about 18 miles east of their transmitter location, somewhere in Laurel Canyon area (their description) And my 2014 Camry unit does not pick it up any better. They may have 6900 watts of power -- but they are not on top of Mt Wilson (where their competitor, with 600 watts is located.) FM (frequency modulation) is "line of sight" just like television. AM you can often pickup from San Francisco and in the past I used to listen to DOA in Denver, Co. "A clear reception station." Don't know if they still exists -- but the significance is that AM travels by bouncing of the atmosphere, so much further reception is possible. With the internet many of these stations are available. But you can't always drive around in a computer to pick them up. My stations of PREFERENCE: KKJZ - JAZZ & BLUES -- AND KUSC CLASSICAL MUSIC. BOTH HAVE GOOD RECEPTION IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD. read more

MORNING BECOMES ECLECTIC should be called Morning Becomes Everything You Hate About Contemporary, Middle-Agers Music. Seriously, the programming is hideous. Half these songs sound like background music in an organic clothing store. A show that plays round the clock "Regina Spektor" and isn't trying to force their listeners to pull their eyeballs out by the end is kidding themselves, and attempting to kid us. Please, from the peeps that bring us Wilco, Elbow, or even some Portishead occasionally, okay, okay "uncle." We love it. Now lay off the techno, whimpy drumming machine that sounds so 2001 and find some real musicians and music directors to choose your shiznet. By far one of the best public radio stations ever. I listen on my commute both ways (except for Wino Wednesdays on Indie) and on the weekends whenever we're in the car. There is a great line up of news, music, entertainment.... the list goes on. Trust me, turn it on and you won't be disappointed (except if it's Saturday morning and the Car Talk guys are on, they drive me crazy but the rest of the programming makes up for it) read more

I would love nothing more than to give my favorite radio station 5 stars but given the painfully annoying pledge drives with Ruth Seamore (I beg you to STOP whining Ruth! Please!) that seem to happen every other week AND the feeling that the "sponsor announcements" are thinly disguised advertising on this commercial free station, still you cannot beat the balanced news coverage (This Way LA, fucking change your theme song) and the music! The best radio station in L.A. As good as Revolution Radio in Miami, PRIDE Radio, and Disclosure Radio. People that aren't tuning in are missing out. On the weekends late night it REALLY kicks in . The DJs sound like they are your friends. You can meet them at some events where they guest DJ. They have the best "recommends" for music and other events in town. I,m not saying to exclusively listen to KCRW but do take a listen every now and then. They have some sounds you may really like. read more

I LOVE KCRW!!!. I can't ask for more. I like listening to politics but I don't like Left, Right and center. But that's just me. You get news & good eclectic music. When I used to have a long commute, this radio station was a life saver. I'd get all current news in the morning and I get it done before I arrive. I usually switch back and forth between KPCC and KCRW. If I'm sick of listening to news then I can switch to KCRW for good music. Always a great station, but unfortunately I rarely get reception in San Diego. It's better than my NPR station (KPBS...they play classical music at night). When I was driving back from Long Beach, I tuned in to hear "The Eclectic". Great program for long drives, but lost reception when I hit the southern part of Orange County. This station is one of the best things about LA. read more

After listening to Morning Becomes Eclectic, Metropolis and all the other awesome music programs that showcase the latest and the greatest from around the world, I finally whipped out the check book and gave them a donation. You know what happened? They sent me the most awesome CD of some DJ dude named Carmen Rizzo, which I have listened to so many times I know all the words AND have made up dance routines to each song THATS how good this CD is. So not only do I get awesome music mornings and evenings, but they put together these great compilation CD's that you can purchase. I HEART KCRW. If you listen to it you will feel cool automatically and when your sad friends chat up how great the new Justin Timberfart CD is you can go "I heard this great song by The Catherine Wheel and another from Keanes Under the Iron Sea BEYOTCHES" and they will explode from being so lame and easily marketed to by large corporations who are selling musical product, not artists. Sometimes I will listen to the news out of Washington DC (Korva Coleman!) and give everyone in the cars around me a knowing look like I am on top of what is going on in the world and not being lied to. The fact that they have people reenacting stories from books freaks me out, but I guess there are alot of people who still like that form of entertainment so who am I to start raining on everyones parade with my awesome taste. KCRW is the radio station you listen to when you are serious about being your own thinking person. However gross that may be. read more

If you like music you'll like kcrw. The variety and depth is second to none. I listen online kcrw.com nearly daily. I've discovered old songs like "Street fighting man" by new groups such as Lake Trout and new songs by older acts such a Nancy Sinatra or Johnny Cash. Oh, it' doesn't stop there... how about a bit of latin love and tango passion mixed in with "Alibaba" by regge star John Holt. Wait, there's more I just discovered a beautiful tune by Van Morrison, "The Way young lovers do" and get giddy when I hear "Blue Orchid" by the White Stripes. That's just a sampling of the spectrum. The other coolio move is the weekly check in with mr. so and so with BBC1 in London. The interviews are stellar especially if you can catch the simulcast live from the studio.
