89.9 KCRW is the first public radio station I listened to in all my years that I finally gave to during a pledge drive. They have NPR news and play eclectic quasi-unknown music all day. If you know music you've heard from most of the artists they play. If like me you are not tuned into the music scene, you've probably not ever heard of the artists until you hear it on KCRW. The Di's play albums that are not released in the states, or are about to be released, but haven't hit KROQ or other stations yet. I listen to KCRW almost all day everyday. At work I play the archives of metropolis, the drop, pop-secret, A-Track and so forth. just about everything but morning becomes eclectic, a show that roams to much for my taste (as the name of the show suggests it will). My alarm clock is set to KCRW, and I turn on the news as I get dressed in the morning. Sunday is spent napping and listening to Cafe LA and the A-track. I am addicted to the music they play. I always loved trip-hop and downbeat stuff, and never knew where to find it when I was growing up on the east coast, and poof, my buddy from NH mentions it to me, and I am now hooked. read more

Great music. This is why leaving Socal is so hard, so many great music acts pass at least thru this US city. This is one of the few radio stations I still listen too. When I'm sick of listening to my CDs (yes, I know I should join the 21st century and get an MP3 player but I am non-profit budget) I tune into KCRW. read more

I feel that I should update my review as that was written BJB (Before Jason Bentley). He has been doing a super job as the Music Director of the station. I really like the direction he has been going. I think its great that he plays some more hip hop/urban music in addition to the type of music Nic used to play. read more

I love them so much I volunteer there. Of course there's all their DJs, but the new Independent Producers Project is also really exciting.

I love them and miss them. All of it. The DJs, the talk shows, they 'break' bands and artists-pretty much bourgeois taste at a proletariat price. This sets the bar for how good local radio can and should be. Other radio pales in comparison, please take note. read more

This is by far the best station for great music in L.A. Unfortunately they also have normal programming, some of it good, Like "The Business" and "Marketplace", "The Treatment" they also have some horrible normal non-music programming. I'm specifically going to point out Bookworm, which may be the...err...is, the most boring half hour of radio every week and then the second most boring half hour, the Santa Monica City Council meetings. I still don't understand why KCRW does not just relegate this to an internet stream as it sucks to turn to a great station and hear four hours of prissy people talking instead of four hours of Garth Trinidad and Raul Campos spinning the disks. Other than Tuesdays in the evening and that half hour of shit that is Bookworm on Thursdays this is a great radio station. I know I'm a subscriber and hope that everyone else will become one too after a few weeks listening to the awesomeness, just don't listen Tuesday nights or Thursday between 2:30 and 3 in the afternoon unless you want to experience extreme boredom. read more

I gotta say, for great music, insightful news and AWESOME summer concerts. KCRW is a one stop audio shop for all things entertaining and interesting. I love this radio station, it's beyond a radio station , it's more like a radio extravaganza! One of my faves is of course Morning Becomes Eclectic, every weekday morning from 9am till noon. This show is 95% responsible for making me the music maven I am today, (well that and high school public radio). At any rate, one can hear local bands before they blow up,foreign treats you won't ear anywhere else,insane electronica from the icy and poppy to the dark and grimy. Classic grooves that no longer get played , honest hip -hop and real rock that really rocks you! Guaranteed to expand your music collection and leave you wanting more. Now,it's on to my second favorite aspect of KCRW, which is how it not only exposes you to new and exciting music on an audio level, but allows you to experience it live! The summer concert series they put on annually, are ridiculous. They sponsor various FREE shows in and around the L.A area. This year it's Pasadena and I've already seen EVEREST and HOT HOT HEAT. Did I say free? In this time of recession, you can't beat it. With the air getting warmer and the sun going down later, these free shows set the perfect vibe for meeting new peeps or just enjoying the ones you already know. Lot's of summer memories created here. Finally,KCRW rewards you.That's right if you become a member, they hook you up with a plethora of free gifts, prime tickets to the Hollywood Bowl, free trips, pre-releases of CD compilations and a whole lot more. I miss listening to KCRW since I move a couple hundred miles to the north. Good selection and there is very few stations like the ones in Southern California. Local stations are always better than the commercial filled mainstream ones I'm force fed now. Well balanced and fair radio. read more

Ive been a listener of KCRW since discovering Snap & Reggae Central in the mid 80s. When LA stations like KMET, KNAC, KABC and my fav KSCA came and went KCRW remains the last one standing. The only thing i dont really like all that much is that KCRW, although being public has taken on a more corporate role in it's advertising, promos and fund drives which are now longer and done quarterly. But i guess you gotta roll with it you know. I've since moved out of the area but listen to KCRW over the internet daily from the Bay Area and when im in town i always tune it in. read more

HEEEEEEELZ JEAH!!! Kcrw has had me as a late nite listener since my teens with metropolis. That was one of the first badazz shows in L.A. to play all sorts of electronic liks and some organic jams too. Then came nocturna, then chocolate city. I don't mind the morning Dj's but the nite time is where it's @. Those three have remained my faves but they do showcase many different programming styles as well. I do wish someone in the staff would do a punk slash new wave show. People who B!tC# should use their digits to flip the dial. It's radio bruthas!. Which in essence, is a dying art form AND It's free!!!! You should donate if yer a rez of L.A. fer real. Clearly not all NPR's are the same. This one truly IZ informative, well rounded, as well as being a great source for music. I have driven to 40 states, and the haters really don't know what they are talking about, because this is one of the few gems in a sea of awfulness. That said, why does such an Alpha class radio station have such a SUCKY signal. I live 2 miles from DLTA and cannot get their signal even with a powered antenna. And in Santa Clarita they get blotted out by some religious nutcase station who walks all over their frequency. Lastly, I like your taste alot Mr Bentley, but you have always and still to this day TALK TOO DAMN MUCH. More music, please. read more

Ten years ago I used to listen everyday, but since then it's either gone downhill, or I've just changed profoundly. I think the cooking shows are pretty good, and The Prairie Home Companion is good for a a few chuckles (a few), and This American Life can be interesting, but a couple of years ago I heard David Foster Wallace was going to be on to discuss his newest book. I eagerly tuned in to Bookword, with host Michael Silverblatt. My first impression was that DFW sounds annoyingly ... nebbish, but after five minutes it was Silverblatt who was making my eyes cross. At least DFW has interesting things to say. MS is a droning blowhard. Geez, if you are suicidal, he will probably push you over the edge. I've heard robots speak with more animation and personality. I consider myself generally happy, and after listening to this show I was pondering giving myself a lobotomy. I can't remember ever hearing a song on a Morning Becomes Eclectic that I liked enough to buy, and everything else is skewed and repeated ad nauseum. read more
