We stopped here after heading to Midland for the eclipse. We're Okies but know our way around Texas barbecue. We had major sticker shock at the price. It was $105 for three of us. It was tough because the price per pound was not really posted anywhere that we could see. I should have cued off the man in front of us who was getting 1 rib and half a piece of brisket. Our brisket was dry and half of it was fat. Ribs were pretty good. We were so shocked by the price of the meat, we didn't even get much more--just a coleslaw. In the Midland area for work. We're from Ohio & Pa and wanted some good bbq. KD's was recommended to us and i'm glad we tried. First, it smelled amazing just pulling in the parking lot. I got ribs, brisket, and jalapeno/cheddar sausage. Everything was great. Sides were good as well, but the star of the show was the brisket. Pull apart, melt in your mouth. Very disappointed! Other than being informed that we were to choose our meat from the pit and all meats were $18.95 per pound, we received no instruction on the "serve yourself" process or what condiments were included. Together, we tried brisket, pork ribs, and jalapeño sausage. The ribs were ok, the sausage was a glorified weenie, and while the brisket had a very nice smoke ring, it was tough and had little flavor. As mentioned, we did not receive instructions to know that regular pinto beans were available, so we both chose the "brisket beans". I don't know what they cost, but mine went directly into the trash. If not for the regular pinto beans in the condiment selection, I would have had to drive around the corner for a burger. This was highly recommended but I left disappointed. The atmosphere was excellent, much like many great bbq joints I've been in. The food was another story. I'll start with the sausage, because that was the only item that was good, and it was really good. The brisket was dry and had little flavor. The ribs were mostly fat. The cole slaw and potato salad were average. There were plenty of free pickles though, which came in handy because everything else was really expensive. Let's start with the PROS: The place has a fun "Texas" atmosphere and friendly service. There are some good things. The pork ribs, both candied and regular are very good. The coleslaw is delicious and the peach cobbler is pretty good. Now for the CONS: The brisket is dry, and flavorless. One of the worst I've ever had. (I hate to have to say that but it's true). We are only in Midland for one night and thought we'd try some famous Texas BBQ! We found KD's on Yelp and decided to give it a go! We were honestly kind of lost walking in the door but I guess we looked lost so they jumped in and walked us through the process. I must say the meat was super delicious even without the yummy sauce. I was attempting a monster road trip of Atlanta to Santa Barbara ... over four days ... with no A/C (don't ask). I am driving through hot rural Texas and see a sign for KD's BBQ off the highway and I thought why not? I park my car at a building that looks like their old location and walk next door and there is a line at least 30 deep in the hot and blazing sun. I knew right away this place was legit. I waited 25 minutes before even getting my food, but it was totally worth it. This is the kind of experience and food that you may only find once in America and it is the kind of experience that a road trip provides. KD's is a cavernous structure filled with many bits of Americana and I can't even do it justice in print. The food is spectacular. Once you get up to the front of the line, you grab a tray and a sheet of wax paper - no plates - and there is a guy standing there in front of a huge, 20-feet smoker and you just tell him what you want - brisket, pork, sausages, corn, turkey, chicken, whatever - and he carves off a chunk and puts it on your tray. That's it. Then, you get in line for cobbler, cole slaw or potato salad and pay by weight. There is another table in the center of the room with many different sauces, pickles, and black beans. There is also a side table with water, and they have all drinks and beers. Then you just sit down at a table and wolf down. This is true Americana and I will take a journey here again. I had high hopes for this place after reading some of the reviews and was sorely disappointed. The exterior isn't much to look at, but it's been my experience those places turn out the best BBQ - oh how I was wrong. The first thing I noticed was the lack of the smell of smoke. I've been to plenty of good BBQ joints and each one smelled of smoke on the outside. When I walked inside I must have looked like a newbie because the waitress explained to me what I needed to do to get my food without me even asking. KD's claim to fame is picking your meat straight from the pit. When I think of a pit, I think of the pit's I've seen in Lockhart and Austin. They lifted the lid to the small pit and all the meats and sides were sitting in aluminum pans. Seriously?!?!?! Made me wonder when and where the meats were smoked. I chose my meats (brisket & sausage) and headed to the checkout where you can grab a side, a drink, or dessert. The interior is great. It's housed in an old garage with lots stuff on the walls. I grabbed some additional condiments (bread, pickles, jalapenos, onions & BBQ sauce) and sat at a table near one of the big screen TV's. The meat looked promising, but even though my cut of brisket had a fair amount of fat, it was rather dry and smoke taste was odd. I'm not sure what kind of wood they used, but it had a funny taste. The sausage wasn't all that good either. I like when the skin on the links pop when you bite into it and the skin definitely didn't pop, not to mention the sausage had no texture or flavor to it. Boring if you ask me. I tried their BBQ sauce as I like my brisket wet and it was a bit too sweet for my taste - too much honey. I hate to waste food, but I just wasn't into finishing my plate. A local brought us here being new from out of town.. Very interesting set up, you get your meat right when you walk in the door.christmas. In a tray and piece of paper, walk over, they measure it put a price on your paper, you walk down her your sides then pay, as you're walking through they ask you what you want to drink... A bit hit and miss. We've been there several times and the kids love it. They love that it's in a barn and you get to pick your meat from the pit. The white bread in the bag at the bean bar makes them happy as well. They can also pick ice cream out of a cooler, which is always fun when you're a kid. As for the food...more miss than hit. I've found the brisket to be great one day, then dry and disappointing the next. I've seen a smoker on their property, but don't see it smoking. Nothing in the pit is actually cooking in the pit, just staying warm. Closed on Sundays & Mondays. Kind of inconvenient if you have out-of-town guests that want to try it out. Was really hopeful for this BBQ joint, but the disappointment was in everything! Brisket was fatty and very dry. The sausage was awful. The turkey was sitting in juices and still very dry. Stopped in Saturday afternoon with the wife. Saw the reviews about pricing but wasn't disappointed. I could tell the brisket was cooked the old fashioned way and the Ribs were right on point. The gentleman at the pit recommended the sweet ribs and glad he did. The BBQ beans and brisket at the front counter were a perfect fit also. I don't mind the price when they spend all that time doin the smokin. Something else that was unusual suring these times was the young lady came by and refilled our drinks 2 different times. By far the best bbq I have had. More than anything else their commitment to customer service shows. The staff was very attentive and we had a great laugh. On the food side, do not miss the pork ribs. Soft and fall off the bone. The German and jalapeño sausages are great too. A word of advise, that tray is deceiving. Even after not having anything prior to lunch and being really hungry, 3 ribs and two sausages with Cole slaw and potato salad stopped me midway in my tracks on the mission to wipe my plate clean. But I always have an extra stomach pocket for a peach cobbler and was right back on track. Driving through town the other day and really was excited about going to a restaurant and sitting down because most restaurants in Texas Have opened up already just to find out this place was still closed... bummer I ended up ordering anyway but was really disappointed in the very small soufflé cups of sides they served as well as the over smoked flavor meat. Dry chicken as well as dry brisket. I get it food normally isn't the same when you take out versus dining in but if you're not gonna give good quality take out you might as well stay closed.
