KD's BBQ, the first place in Midland where I thought "HUH THIS IS REAL GOOD!". Good job KD's, you should be honored. Hahaha, just kidding, I'm not that important. I got the juicy brisket, BBQ sauced brisket, jalapeno cheese sausage, cole slaw, and peach cobbler. Everything was delicious, but I think I'll skip the peach next time. It tasted like it was sitting out there for a while. Other than that, no complaints on the food. The brisket was melt-in-your-mouth, which is what I expect from a great BBQ place in Texas. The jalapeno cheese sausage was tasty! The cole slaw was perfect, not too mayonnaisey which is the way I like it. My favorite had to be the brisket, make sure to get it! All of the condiments were fresh, I loaded up my tray with so much onions and pickles. The hot BBQ sauce tastes awesome! Put that stuff on everything I ate here. The sauce is the boss yo. As other reviewers say, your meal will be pricey but it's worth it for that once in a while expensive delicious meal. read more

From all the BBQ reviews I'd read for joints between Midland/Odessa, KD's had some decent comments. I had tried Sam's in Midland and was thoroughly disappointed (asking if the ribs were St. Louis style cut and being answered West Texas style ribs...um?) so I hoped KD's could be that silver lining behind the West TX dust storms. Located right off I-20 and pulling up to KD's...you will think you're about to enter a feed store. Due to the abscence of smoke outside and upon entering inside...it may just as well be a feed store. The inside is setup very cool and would be a great place to grab a couple beers and a couple ribs but nothing more than that. The meat is displayed on the pit for you to choose when you walk in. I asked the kid manning the pit what kind of smoker they used...he didn't know. Another employee mentioned a big rotisserie kind. Good to know. I then asked if the sausage is handmade and it's from Ben E. Keith. Oh boy. Insert first note...Dear Ben E. Keith...stick to making crappy beer and not crappy sausage. The pit employee cut off what looked like a promising 1/4 lb. of burnt end brisket. I also ordered two ribs and asked what they used for rub...again, he didn't know. Amazing someone who mans the pit has no knowledge of their product. A bit inexcusable if you ask me and I'm no novice. I bit into the jalapeno cheese sausage and (insert second note) Schoepf's BBQ (Belton, TX) I think Ben E. Keith stole your recipe...or rather I have a good idea who distributes your sausage too. Taste is too similar with the same overbearing amount of cheese oozing out. One bite and done on this. The brisket was next and it was great...if you prefer the crust to actually taste badly burned and hard. Also if you enjoy your meat being dry with no smoke. Overcooked with too much heat. The ribs were very good minus smoke. Rub was heavy on the pepper corn, salt and a sweet taste as well. I'm guessing maple and honey. There was actually pink in the rib meat, it was moist and did peel off the bone easily. The BBQ sauces, original and spicy delivered but not even these antidotes could make the meat easy to take down. Even their Ben E. Keith bread was dried out. I give up. I feel sorry from within my deep fried heart for all those Yelp reviews who think KD's is 3,4, and 5 star worthy. I can only imagine the pain of being stuck in West Texas, counting tumbleweeds as they roll by and being stuck with overpriced below mediocre Que. For a BBQ joint who states "Getcha' some of this"...no thanks, I'd rather not. There's plenty of authentic taquerias down the road. Getcha' some tacos instead. read more

Update 2: Tried this place again. I went at noon thinking the meat would be fresh off the BBQ. However the brisket is still really dry, ribs where dry, the hot links were cold. I guess the tang in I tasted in the potato salad last time is supposed to be in it. The other guy I ate lunch with was not impressed either. He said the beans were plain. Fox News was still playing on all 3 TV's in the place. The place was packed for lunch, so most people must not feel the way I do. Update: A personal note from the owner made me up the stars on my review. Of all the reviews (good or bad) this is the first time the owner has sent me a message. I plan on giving them a second chance this week since I'm back in town. Going earlier in the day this time. All these other reviews must have had a completely different view of this place than I did. First issue was Fox News on the TV's. Notice to business owners, you will loose more customers than you gain by expressing your radical political views. Second issue was the cleanliness. You walk in the door and they hand you a tray and a piece of paper to put your food directly on. The whole place had a dusty, would never pass inspection, feeling. Third issue was the food. After getting your piece of paper they open the lid on the meat storage box. Lots of different meats in aluminum trays. They had been sitting there for how long? Who knows. All the meat was cold, or just slightly warm. Dried out from sitting over the heat for hours. Good flavor on the dried out brisket though. The ribs had a bad texture, again probably from being over the heat. You pay by the pound (about $12.00 per pound) so dont waste that on chicken or other cheap meats. After the meats you are greeted by the sides. $1.50 for each small side. A large tray of apple pie was there, it had been picked over. The potato salad had an off flavor, it may have turned bad. There are no servers here, This is not a sit down place. Its more cafeteria style, go through the line then go eat. Im sure if you get the food fresh off the grill it is very good, but going at 8:00 pm, it is old and dried out. Too many failures for a single restaurant. read more

While the food here is still pretty good, it's not that knock-your-socks-off good that it used to be. The brisket is still really good, but the choice of ribs was sweet or the peppery ones (way too much black pepper) and today the potato salad had way too much vinegar or pickle juice in it and was too sour to eat. Even the cherry cobbler was just meh. This is the second time we got just so-so food and that might explain why they don't have the lunch crowds they used to have. I had just flown in from LAX early in the AM and told my parents to take me to to a BBQ joint. We found this place online and decided to give this place a try. We got here and waited for 20 minutes till it opened and I'm glad we waited! The place is so down to earth and the staff was friendly, but the variety and amount of choices available were kind of overwhelming I had no idea what to pick! We made our choices and by the way I loved the way the bbq is served on a tray. I've come to notice that's the way the best bbq is served, who needs plates for bbq? weird. This place was so refreshing and after my first bite I was like, "Yep, I'm definitely in Texas!" Needless to say, every time I fly into MAF from now on I will be heading directly to this spot! The rule of relativity normally applies to Midland (and infrequently Odessa): 3-star dining anywhere else is 5-star dining here. Not the case for KD's BBQ. This place can hold its own against the best Texas BBQ has to offer. The jalapeno sausage and brisket combined with fair cobbler and a range of surprisingly good BBQ sauce (hot, normal, & sweet) make this a destination even if you have to drive into town for it. This may have been the best BBQ I have ever had. My boyfriend and I ate there driving from Midland to Austin on a whim. We really had no idea what kind of place we were going to. You wait on a line before you even get inside to pick out your meat from the grill. We both had some brisket and ribs. You can get sides of beans and cole slaw. The meat was just incredible. The sauce was sweet and perfect. I looked up from eating and realized that I had gotten sauce all over my face, but honestly didn't care. The atmosphere is also great, very Texas-style. I would recommend this place to anyone who loves good BBQ. This is what Rudy's tried to imitate (and although they're good), they could never compare to K D's. read more

There is no smoke smell anywhere in or around the place leaving me to believe they use electricity (definitely not real BBQ). KD's is the go to place for BBQ in Midland. If you see a line that is out the door of any restaurant you know that is a good sign and most days KD's line is out the door. The wait is worth it and the line goes quickly. You get up to the cooker and can pick any meat you want. I usually go with the brisket, turkey and Jalepeno sausage. They weigh your food and it can be pricey so if your wallet is tight get a pipe salesman to take out for a free meal! They have cobbler and cheese as your walking through the line to pay. Cheese and Brisket go together. Go to the sauce table and grab your bread and beans and then they have a lot of seating. You can have big parties at KD's and it is a great place to take friends who are looking for good BBQ! After KD's you will want to head back to the office and take 2:30 nap. Enjoy! read more

I've been to KD's BBQ a few dozen times and am finally writing a review. KD's is good bbq but I feel could be better. Typically, I don't have all the meat from the ribs able to tear completely away from the bone. The thing I can say good about KD's is it is descent bbq and you won't feel like you had a terrible meal. However, this is Texas where people are extremely critical over their smoked meats. This was some of the best BBQ that I've ever had. KD's is a very unique atmosphere as well. I got the brisket, ribs, and jalapeño cheddar sausage. I had the beans for a side and topped it off with peach cobbler. I wanted to try everything! Everything I had was so good! My favorite item was the sausage, followed closely by the peach cobbler. It was a little bit expensive. I got everything I mentioned and a Diet Coke for about $24.50. Even though it was a little steep, I wasn't disappointed and I was stuffed when I left! I am told that KD's is the best BBQ in Midland, and I have to admit that they can have some great BBQ. My first visit for lunch was fantastic. The BBQ was moist, smoky, and among the top 10 BBQ I've ever had. Unfortunately, the next two visits were extremely unimpressive. Instead of getting a center cut of the brisket, I was given slices off the ends. They still had that smoky flavor, although a bit to strong, but they were dry and overcooked by far. I just finished my fourth visit and I finally had another center piece of brisket which I found to be almost as good as the first time. This time however, I notice how much fat there was. Thick layers of fat covered the outside of the brisket but the meat was solid through with virtually no marbling. I don't know too much about brisket or meat in general, but my friends who do tell me that it sounds like they do not trim the brisket properly before cooking it. Over all, I would give them a 4 at their best, however, begin able to deliver a consistent product is really important to me. I don't want to be playing Russian Roulette with my lunch. A little over-dramatic? Yes. But this is Texas, and we're talking about BBQ. Unfortunately, the final rating has to be a 2.5 for me. I the inconsistency of the brisket and the price of 13.99 a pound is enough to make me want to give below a 3, but I can't really give at 2.5 can I Yelp? So I am going to bump it up to a 3. Why? Primarily because they have fantastic service. Also partly because they have great Cole Slaw, which is offset by the insanely salty potato salad. read more

After getting past the fact that what appeared to be the enterance was in fact the exit, and the enterance was a door that appeared to be a side service enterance I was in BBQ heaven. Delicious. My husband loved the jalapeño sausage. Potato salad is creamy instead of chunky and very good as is the coleslaw. The peach cobbler and sweet tea are excellent. Your meal comes with the bean bar where you get all the sauces, beans, bread, pickles and onions you can eat. Your meats are weighed by the pound and sides cost extra. It's not cheap. We spent about $50 for lunch but it was worth every penny and we had a whole box full of leftovers to take home. The inside of the place is super casual and fun. A true Texas experience. read more

Now I am proud to say that I have had my share of BBQ in my day. I have had great BBQ and BBQ that made me want to give it up forever. I can say without doubt that K D's is one of the best BBQ joints I have ever eaten at. In good BBQ style, K D's is in a large tin building right off a main road. When you walk in, you grab a tray with a piece of wax paper on it and walk up to the large grill where a guy pulls your choice of meats off the grill and puts it on your tray. You walk to the next room where they put the wax paper wtih meat, no tray, onto a scale and weigh it. Moving along you get your sides - potato salad, coleslaw, peach or cherry cobbler, while a guy asks you what you want to drink. Sweet tea is highly recommended. After you pay the cashier, there isa Be. an Bar. I showed that I was a "Newbie" (thats what the owner caled me!) when I was wondering in circles around the bar. The bean bar is pretty amazing with slices of bread, beans, and of course plenty of sauces. The large dining room was packed full of locals who were friendly. While we sat there, a owner came up, called me a Newbie and chatted about stuff. I told her we were from L.A. and she was very excited. She was even more excited when I told her I found K D's on Yelp. She was so excited in fact that she sent her son over to ask more about it. Great people, great food. read more

Horrible customer service, bought more than $50 of products and was treated by the owner like I was a either a child and/ or his age. I'm a 37 year old attorney from Austin and this "owner " clearly was wearing his badge of courage which was surprising that there was room, since he was also consumed by the big heart on the sleeve. At least I was reminded "again" not to believe everything that is written, ha-ha! I will stick to the great city of Austin for all things barbecue. It had been a while since I had been to KD's but went recently. I got the sliced sausages and chopped brisket. Both of these are cooked with sauce so you know they will be tender and with no visible fat included...the meat was tasty and tender, as good as any other time I have tried it over 11 yrs. or so. It is somewhat expensive and I think you can get more BBQ for your money at other places but KD's BBQ has a certain flavor I like that other places don't. However wait staff kept asking if they could take my tray at least 3 times and I was still eating. If I buy food at a restaurant I will eat all of it or take leftovers to go; I don't want part of it discarded. Don't see the need for this, I would be fine bussing my own table when done. read more

Little hole in the wall..great ambience, very casual, lots of old signage from various businesses. Which I enjoyed looking at, little bit of old history. Food, the bbq pit, you the customer get to walk up & select what you prefer to eat. Various sausages, tried the hot sausage, bit on the dry side, tasteful not my favorite. Pork rib, was juicy & tasty, which is a great feeling in your mouth. The pulled beef brisket literally falls apart as it lands on your paper. When the security guard at the airport recommends a bbq place, you can certainly expect for it to be the best in town! KD's did not disappoint, both with the succulent meats, sweet brown sauce and friendly service. I walked in 30 minutes before closing on a Thursday evening in late March and was promptly ushered back to the pits with a to-go container where I acquired a jalapeño cheese sausage, hot link sausage, a hefty slice of brisket and single rib, all my specific request. The gentleman (owner?) was kind enough to fix up containers with all the free fixings - sliced pickles, onions, peppers, wheat bread (nicely done) and three different kinds of sauces. While I enjoyed both their traditional and spicy versions, I will admit that the sweet brown sauce really caught me, probably due to the four years I lived in Memphis. I wasn't blown away by the rib, but I think ribs may simply not be my favorite option for bbq. I was absolutely impressed with the thick bark on the brisket and snap of both sausages. They price by the pound here, which makes things simple. Plenty of seating and smoke goodness permeated the entire establishment. KD's certainly is your more traditional, old-school style bbq joint; while it does not have the polish of a Pecan Lodge, you can't go wrong to get your bbq fix here.
