I can always tell the type of place I'm in by the gun counter and staff there. I just listen and eventually the quality of staff will be clearly shown. It happened within 5 minutes of being here. A good looking older woman came to the gun counter. There was an older guy behind the counter working on a fishing reel. The staff member was later found to be named Gary. She approached and was quite timid. She told Gary she thinks it's time she bought a pistol for long trips and was set on a 9mm. She had a few questions about carry/concealment etc. Gary's answers were sound and on point. But, that's not what impressed me the most. This did- She asked Gary which 9mm he recommended. I was kinda waiting to hear his advice. Unlike a lot of other gun counter sales guys, he did NOT try and sell her the most expensive, race gun that she'd never need or even feel comfortable shooting. Gary fit her for a solid choice. I mean, solid. Not the most expensive nor the least. He showed her the perfect pistol for her hand and needs. Fit it to her hand and explained the features of that pistol. It would of been my recommendation as well, if she would've asked me. Gary is a great example of a knowledgeable older gun guy that every twenty something gun guru needs to aspire to be like. Gary's knowledge and experience made me a life long customer. I'll try here before I go anywhere else from this point on.

We went into Academy to purchase a Yeti cooler. None of the 3 we were choosing between had prices so we left without spending anything. The store barely had any customers so you'd think if they wanted to stay opened, they would do the bare minimum of having signs on the merchandise.

The staff are outdoor-experienced and knowledgeable and friendly, but if you like shopping without being bothered, you may want to get creative or hide when you see them, because they truly are trying to help! (Yes, the membership is worth it...) The value is great and sales are typically pretty good (in-store and online), but what's really great is the dividend members get at the end of every year (like cash back on purchases), PLUS the really lenient return policy, they know you have to try some of this before you know it's a good item for you - gotta love the co-op! Note: they recently when bagless, apparently except for the holiday season as I saw they had paper bags for those gift-purchasers this weekend. So, in a non-holiday season, if you plan on grabbing a haul (like I do, apparently), you'll want to bring your own bag(s) or plan to take a few trips to the car! (They will hunt down a bag for you if you need it, or they'll help you to your car!)

We were able to hop in line at the cashier, and make our return in less than 5 minutes. This might not seem like a big deal, but this simple transaction during the holiday hustle and bustle is worth shouting out. We had a paper gift receipt for our return, but you can also use a barcode in the REI app if you're a member of the Co-Op for returns. P.S. If you're not a member of the REI Co-Op, it's well worth it to sign up. It's a one-time $30 fee, and the benefits are great, even if you only shop here once or twice a year. (Free standard shipping forever? That alone is worth $30).

I stood looking at bats today for almost 20 min. Finally picked up some gloves and left. At the counter the unconcerned checker asked if I had found everything. When I said no she said sorry again not really concerned and rang me up. This is typical for this store. If you want help you absolutely have to chase someone down.

There are waterfalls and streams outside the store and inside the store. You can buy almost anything for the outdoors here. They have an amazing selection of everything they carry whether it be boats, sunglasses, fishing gear, hunting gear, boating supplies, hiking gear, dog supplies, you name it! They have a huge sale going on right now that takes another 50% off everything they already hade marked down. There were hiking booklets that started at almost $200.00 that were on sale for $35.00. I don't even need or want another pair of hiking boots, but at that price, guess what? I came home with another pair of hiking boots! Lol!! My dogs got some new chew toys out of the deal too. They had those at great prices, not even on sale! The service was good too. They had knowledgeable people helping out in the various departments throughout the store.
