We didn't rush the repairs, because EVERYTHING had to dry out, thoroughly. By summer, we were able to start the recovery, researching and interviewing several companies including Refresh Renovations whose bid was on the lower end. It took about a month, from the initial wreckage removal to the last trim on the walls along the newly-restored and carpeted flooring. The insulation, drywalling, painting, and detailing were meticulously done. The different crews of workers were prompt, courteous, and thorough, and never left a mess behind. I kept thinking about that TV commercial for an interior refurbishing company, showing a badly flooded home that wound up looking "like it never even happened" when the recovery was complete. Refresh Renovations also has a follow-up program to check back in, over the next year, to see how their work has held up. Not even condensation. I then went to two other repair companies for the chimney. Both of them laughed at what Portland Chimney said needed to be done, and quoted me about $2500 in repairs and claimed it was not urgent, vrs an immediate need to rebuild and 12k in repairs. There were significant cracks in the mortar of my brick chimney and loose mortar joints between the bricks. Since I plan on roofing my house soon, I wanted to get this masonry done prior to re roofing. Tom Payne was not the absolute lowest bidder (one higher, one lower) but seemed to have the most experience and checked out with the state Contractor's Board. (CCB # 154697). We had to postpone for a few days due to very hot weather but when we set a date and time, he was on time and on budget. They ground out all of the loose mortar, chipped off the old rain cap and cleaned up. Then, tuck pointed (re-mortared between bricks) and rebuilt the one piece mortar rain cap. Two guys, 3 hours, lots of set up of scaffolding, demolition, clean up, mixing & lifting of heavy mortar, resetting of bricks, buildup of mortar cap. Clean up and tear down. Materials were probably close to half of the $ 385 charge. I would recommend for this or a decorative brick job.

The design process was a pleasure: Clarkbuilt's in-house architect understood exactly what we wanted and worked with us to refine it until it was just right. Demolition was handled with great care. The workmanship on every aspect of the project was first rate. Everyone who touched the remodel, whether Clarkbuilt employees or the subs regularly used by them, was a perfectionist. Throughout, it was extremely important to all involved that we were completely satisfied with the work. And if we wanted something changed or modified, it was done cheerfully. Everyone at Clarkbuilt has a can-do attitude. Of particular note is Clarkbuilt's mastery with woodwork. A major part of the project was the creation of a library with built-in bookshelves, a window bench and a nook beneath a stairway. Clarkbuilt managed to realize our vision and make it even better. Their carpenter worked closely with us to adapt the built-ins perfectly to the space, and the result was stunning. In a major remodel, you expect surprises and unwelcome developments. There were none. Everything proceeded smoothly. We especially appreciated the fact that substantial work took place every day. Time was used productively from start to finish. There were no gaps. The budget was adhered to and savings were gained whenever possible. The result was excellent value for the price paid. I hired them to do a seismic renovation to bolt my house to foundation (1922 house with a fully finished, carpeted basement). Their bid was in line with most others, and I chose them because I trusted they could put the basement back together again the best. Well, right around when they were finishing up, we had the INSANE 12/7/15 rains in Portland and my basement carpet was soaking etc. Even though it was not technically what I had hired them to do, I called Soren in a panic and he sent over 3 people to get that carpet and rug pad out ASAP (so there wouldnt be mold). Then I went out of town for 2 weeks and he was great about staying in communication and a couple times there were heavy rains was nice enough to send someone over to check on whether there was any further water intrusion. I liked everyone on his team - very trustworthy and hard workers and I never felt uncomfortable being alone in the house with them. Other contractors are hard to get a hold of but Soren is super accessible via text or phone. They finally finished up yesterday (there was a delay due to the water situation and I decided to waterproof the basement) and I was anxious to get on Yelp to give them 5 stars. If I ever need anything done to the house again I will be calling Clarkbuilt.

Your demands for immediate payments and accusations of conspiracy are unprofessional and purely lies. The photos of my home show your awful work. Shall I post updated photos of your drywall several months later with even more visible seams and cracks? Your unsupervised workers created crooked wobbly walls in our den and bathroom. I understand you don't believe me because you weren't there to see or check their work. But every contractor and sub that has looked to help us has said the same thing, shoddy poor work. Both these rooms were taken down to the studs. Your men rebuilt the walls crooked, even the corners. How can you say you would have fixed that if we didn't fire you?? You said they looked good to you! Fix the drywall with what, a little spackle again or mud here and there, like the spackle smears your man did to hide the the damaged doors?? Then apply a little paint over the tape again? The drywall seams are pulling and curling, even worse now than when I took these pictures months ago. It needs to be redone. Stop pretending you know how to do the work. Our drywall is NOT level 4, which is what we paid for. You pretended the drywall was done. Pay me now you demanded. You pretended your workers applied 2 coats of paint. Pay me now you demanded. But everyone that sees our house is shocked that you claim it has level 4 drywall or adequate paint. The truth is you ran out of money and couldn't do the work properly. Every area your workers entered was damaged. I have the photos and video to prove it. Demanding payment immediately, so we paid but there are NOT 2 coats of paint. You damaged our wood floors by demoing without protecting them, then blamed us for the damage. Shall I post the proof of this?? You accused us of mopping and damaging a floor. You damaged one of a kind solid wood doors with tools, smearing SPACKLE to hide the dings your "unequipped" worker made (your adjective not mine). You let the "unequipped" one paint the ceiling without any hallway wall protection letting paint go down the walls. You damaged the downstairs hallway, millwork, and then blamed us for it. Your workers smeared paint down the walls and over doors. Next time show up and supervise your workers. Do not come to a homeowners house at 7am demanding an unannounced walk thru and yelling at them in front of their small children like you did to us because we have to go to work. And stop writing threatening emails, texts demands for payments at 4am. I suggest you take responsibility for the harm you have caused our family by damaging our property. Have always found his work to be excellent, thorough and completed in a timely manner. If the proposed project is not something he does personally, like plumbing, he has competent and licensed people he hires. He gets the required permits for projects and is upfront about where there may be issues that are not readily apparent. He is friendly and willing to discuss projects to find the best way, and sometimes cost saving ways, to do the work.
