Just bought a house. Inspector noted minor repairs might be needed on Chimney, so I called for an estimate. Not only was the cleaning $260 (two other companies would do it for $125) but the estimator claimed we needed to rebuild the entire thing, and claimed that water was leaking into our heating system in the crawl space. This was odd because I just had the heating system serviced and nobody said anything. Called back the heating guy who did an immediate inspection. He fools me things were great and no problems. Not even condensation. I then went to two other repair companies for the chimney. Both of them laughed at what Portland Chimney said needed to be done, and quoted me about $2500 in repairs and claimed it was not urgent, vrs an immediate need to rebuild and 12k in repairs. We had someone from Portland Chimney come out to look at a cement support that our current chimney rests on that was showing some wear due to the elements. The Portland Chimney employee then proceeded to try and hard sell us into a complete rebuild of the chimney that would cost tens of thousands of dollars. Our chimney isn't leaning, and the current bricks are showing very little, if any spalling. A different chimney business (always get second opinions, please) commented on how the chimney looked in good shape and had clearly been repointed in the last few years. When the estimate came in from Portland Chimney, it was about $15K OVER what he had quoted verbally. Avoid Portland Chimney, please. read more

Beware of Portland Chimney. WE reached out for a chimney sweep, and the person who came used fear tactics to force me to use them to tear down and rebuild the chimney. Refused to clean the chimney. As a word of caution: one of the honest masons who came out told me he used to work for Portland Chimney years ago, and his former apprentice told him recently that Portland Chimney requires every chimney sweep that is scheduled, to start with an estimate, and if there is no liner in the chimney, to hard sell a complete rebuild. When I posted this on Nextdoor, many other people came out and said they were pressured the same way. We decided to turn down their bid. We ended up getting what we wanted. and that other masons told us that our chimney was just fine. Other reviews here suggest a similar pattern esp. if you are a woman. I would not recommend them to anyone. They appear to be trying to upsell very expensive unneeded work to everyone. read more

Our cap blew off our gas vent that comes up from the masonry chimney in the massive wind storm of January 2024. I called and they offered to come out to do a free inspection. I was then told that I needed thousands of dollars of work including removing the architectural crown and repair the flashing. Since the crack isn't large, it should be able to be repaired. I am always skeptical of "free inspections.' Update. I received their bid for $4500 to replace the crown, fix the flashing etc. I just had the chimney serviced a few years ago and the roof replaced in 2022. I called the contractor who did my rood, Bush-Hogs Construction and the owner Wendall came out the next day. He went up and inspected the chimney and said the crown was fine but that someone had removed all the screws on the flashing and bent it. He showed me one screw he found on the roof that had sealant on it. I did not witness Portland Chimney vandalizing my chimney but then who did? Wendall will fix it for no charge. read more

We contacted Portland Chimney and Masonry to do a bid for us. What we wanted was a chimney rebuild from the roofline up since we knew we'll eventually put in a gas fireplace. Long story short, our chimney started to let water in due to failed masonry/our oil furnace venting through it caused the chimney to lean. We know we want to put in a gas fireplace (do not want to burn in a wood fireplace EVER) and just needed to have the chimney keep out moisture from the house. When they came out, they not only had a negative comment about our neighbors chimney, but also wouldn't budge on a full chimney rebuild with a liner totaling 14k for us. They wanted to redo the entire chimney, so that it could be wood burning again and would not listen when we told them we wanted to do a gas fireplace instead. They kept trying to do a hard sale on us and kept insisting this was the only way to get our chimney "to code." This is something I would understand if we wanted to have a wood burning chimney, however, you can do a gas insert after the fact and still be to code. Did not like the selling component of downgrading our neighbors chimney and then expecting nothing less than a total rebuild from us. I would not recommend them. We got 2 other bids and both were able to do the rebuild from the roofline up to prevent further moisture from getting in at a 1/3 of the price. Definitely look other places!!! read more

The bid was based upon the work and not the zip code and they were very fair. They were very good about calling us to notify us of progress on our work or any changes do to the weather. A few weeks ago a Raccoon tried getting into my chimney and caused some damage. I tried getting repair quotes from 3 other companies but no one else bothered to return my call. After a cleaning, I was told I shouldn't have a fire in the fireplace or my house would be at severe risk of burning down because of the age of the chimney and excessive cracking. It was very alarming. I never doubted them, but they kept pushing me to get work done that added up to over $3,000 (regular phone calls). I started scheduling the work, but then decided to just get a second (and third!) opinion before getting any work done. Both other companies (one that I had to pay for the estimate and one that ended up charging me $0) said the previous information I was given was ridiculous. Both suggested I was being taken because I didn't know much about chimney construction/masonry. Both suggested yes, there were some improvements that could be made, but I was not at risk of burning down my house, not in the slightest, and the "necessary" work Portland Chimney told me I needed to have done was either incorrect or superfluous. We just bought an old house and are having a lot of work done, so I've been scheduling various tradespeople all summer. As you can see from my Yelp history, I don't normally write Yelp reviews. However, I've used Yelp a lot this summer to crowd source and find people who do quality work. So..............I'm realizing that I need to contribute and let people know about amazing companies I've found. Portland Chimney is one of the companies I didn't find on Yelp, but through word of mouth. A friend recommended them. That friend was SO right. This is by far one of the most professional companies I've worked with all summer. I needed to have my entire leaning chimney rebuilt. They did it in a day. Their office called to remind me the day before they were scheduled. (This was great, considering the sewer guys who were at my house the week before didn't communicate well at all and did shoddy work. But that is content for another review.) The Portland Chimney guys showed up when they said they would. I had to leave. They did the work while I was gone. When I came home, I had a new, stable chimney and no traces left of the demo. I have used Portland chimney on a yearly basis to sweep my wood stove which they installed 7 years ago. We were very disappointed to be charged $430 to clean an already clean chimney (they didn't check its condition before cleaning) and install a chimney cap (both within an hour) only to be told we would probably have to crack a window open and turn the heater off to have a fire in our fireplace. The technician acted like everyone knew this, but I've had numerous fireplaces over my lifetime and have never heard of this! We asked him why he didn't give us this information before he did the work as we were debating whether to install a gas insert or keep the fireplace. Had he informed us of this potential problem that he was aware of, we would not have had this work done. No wonder they make you sign a contract for full price before they even come to your house to do the job. Plus, someone should tell the workers they should not wear their shoes inside while it's raining unless they put paper booties on or at least wipe their feet on the porch mat. read more

We recently bought a 70+ year old house in SE PDX. The exterior of the fireplace, and all of the chimney needed attention. The mortar had failed, and a gas furnace had been vented into one of the flues causing interior moisture damage. The roof flashing was in bad shape. All of this was causing a moisture problem in the house, and it needed repair before things got worse. I contacted 3 different contractors. This company was very responsive and gave a favorable bid while being very thorough in explaining the scope of work and what needed done. We hired them. From the estimator to the office to the masons themselves, everyone was very professional. The office kept us posted on scheduling, and the work was started exactly when they said they would arrive. They removed the top section which was entirely loose, tuck-pointed the rest, rebuilt the top, adding a very well done crown, and properly lined the flue serving the furnace. They also replaced the roof flashing completely, and upgraded the sealing system to ensure there would be no leaks. The workmanship is outstanding, the chimney looks like a new one from the ground up. Good work doesn't come cheap, but this is not an area to bargain hunt and end up w/ a sub-optimal result - it has to be done right, and will last a very long time. Given all that was done, and in comparison to other quotes, the cost was very reasonable. We are very satisfied with the end result, and would not hesitate to recommend this company. read more

We got a total of 4 bids on our chimney repair (which included rebuilding the corbell and tuck-pointing the loose worn-out mortar) because the bids varied so much. Portland chimney was about right in the middle. One highly rated company wanted to charge about three times as much as the others and claimed the chimney might not be able to be saved--neither my contractor or the other three bidding companies agreed. We decided to go with Portland Chimney, who was recommended by my contractor, and we are very pleased with the results. The team worked like mad to finish the project in one day (since our electricity needed to be shut off for the work) and the chimney work looks good. My one regret is that I wasn't there when the initial assessment was done, because the fact that our roof was being replaced wasn't communicated or clarified. read more

OK, well, I wish I could divide the review into two categories, the work they eventually did, and their job management. I mean, I understand how the contracting business works - you hook a customer with a promised date, take a deposit, then try to put off doing the work for as long as possible, then, when you do eventually get so fed up with dealing with their frustration you send a guy over to smoke cigarettes and start the job, promising to be done that day. Three days later, after pulling your crew off to work on other jobs (presumably with angrier customers) you finish the job. Except for the skip in the driveway - that can stay another week or so, why not, right? While they were very busy with other clients (far too busy to work on my job), I will credit them with very prompt work when it came to cashing my deposit check. I was very disappointed in the job they did. We were not aware they had not cleaned the top inside of the wood stove that requires you to remove the bricks and vacuum the area. After they left smoke continued to come out of the door which was the original problem and it did not draft, took forever to get a fire to burn. One day a friend stopped by to say hi and offered to take care of the problem for $50 and I said sure. Today when I called they said they would send a technician to check it out and I said no, it has already been taken care of. Then he proceeded to argue with me that the baffle had to be complete removed which I knew was not necessary, this stove has been cleaned several times in the past 15 years. Asked for my $50 and they indicated since I did not have a receipt or request help from them it was too bad. They just lost a repeat customer and someone who will not recommend them. read more

Don't use this company, it's rip off , the Flue tile broke causing the cap to fall off my chimney, they come installed the 12 x 12 flue tile with cement glue and added the chimney 12 x 12 chimney cap with a ladder. I only sign the agreement because they said a 30 foot scaffolding need to be built on that end of the house before the work begin so it's very expansive. But you can judge by yourself and look at the picture. Is this job worth $1595.00 to put on the chimney cap? If there is an option for Zero Star I would use it ! read more

Top notch company and customer service. We needed to have our chimney rebuilt from the roofline up on our mid-century ranch. The trick was in finding matching brick. After Portland Chimney sourced several samples from all over the country they concluded that they would need to go about the job in a different and much more time intensive way. They cut off each brick from the roofline on up and sanded each one so it could be reused. The interior of the chimney used hearty new brick but the outside is seamlessly in keeping with the original design. We are so pleased with the results! Everyone was incredibly professional, from owner, Bill, to the office staff, to the workers on the job crew and craftsmen. Thoroughly impressed with their drive to go above and beyond our expectations and to stay within the original job quote even as the time involved surely surpassed what they had anticipated.
