Our first mimosa for this event was free and there were several other different kinds of wine and snacks for sale (their food truck is open more so during the evening classes and there's a nice patio to sit at). I attended with my wife on Saturday July 26. Overall, it was a very OK experience. For the price point of everything there ie the snack, The event itself, I expected a little more assistance. We had done these in the past and everything is set up for you. While it wasn't labor intensive the fact that we had to gather all our paint and brushes and even clean up our stations at the end seemed very task oriented. The person that assisted with the painting itself was friendly and good natured. However, I felt we should've been a little more catered to considering a bowl of popcorn was over seven dollars. The seats were very uncomfortable as well. I'm about 6 foot three and my back hurt the rest of the day. I recommend moving forward maybe a chill area for husbands that are just there for the ride. Beautiful place to have a fun event at. I took my mother here for valentines Day, and we had an absolute blast! The drinks aren't too expensive and the class was easy to follow. Next time we are going to try the pottery painting class! My only critique is that I wish that they offered more couple paintings since they are really fun and you don't have a repeat painting if you live in the same house. This is one of those experiences unique and hands on! I had heard so much about the experience but had never made the time to attend. You sign up for your space and project on-line. there are many to choose from and if you so choose, you can create your own design. Design by wine is a great way to share in conversation and enjoy a glass or two. It really was a relaxing experience. Ok. I love the owners of this place. As people, as business owners, and wine makers. But as someone with an advanced degree in art, it's rare I want to paint and of the painting offered. But that's just me. I think it's AWESOME for other folks to do. But...the acrylic pour class is different. It's messy, it's unexpected. It's angst inducing (in a great way.) I bought my bottle of wine and jammed out to fun music and did my first couple of acrylic pours (two styles of how to do it.) (HINT - follow Matt's instructions!!!) Anyway, I couldn't have been happier. With the experience and the final outcome. (You can't pick your work up for like a week as it needs to dry so plan accordingly.) read more

Oh my gosh!!!!! What a great idea someone came up with. This little painting/pottery shop is the cutest. My daughter was home for the weekend and before she left we went here and painted. I am not a crafty person however they teach you step by step on how you paint the pictures. You can't screw up your picture at all and believe you me if anybody could it would be me. What a wonderful experience! Loved the atmosphere, the instruction was pragmatic and concise, everyone in there was having a blast - this was one of the best date night's ever!!! First off, we ordered a bottle of tempranillo, grabbed our paint supplies, and found our station. You can bring your own food (I saw someone bring their own pizza!), and drinks (no alcohol can be brought in, but can be purchased, and there is a fantastic selection of wine and beers). Albuquerque is in serious need of good date night locales. Remember Roger Lodge's "Blind Date"? Who doesn't. The show was a cool concept, and it inspired all kinds of crappy reality TV spin-offs for good reason. The best part of each date was the activity they did to break the ice. I remember watching total strangers make ice sculptures, learn to surf, hang glide, whatever, it looked so fun, and in the back of my mind I'd always wonder what unique experiences Burque could offer this dynamic film crew. Young lovers might... build a tumbleweed snowman, perhaps? Tour our extensive selection of Smoke Shops? Customize a footlong at the Dog House? Thankfully, Design by Wine crafts a really great date. And I don't mean to limit this place to couples; friends, relatives, group outings, and even individuals can have a blast behind these canvasses. The concept is simple enough: get a glass of wine, sit down in front of an easel, and let a polished instructor walk you through the basics of creating your own masterpiece. I was definitely hesitant; I'm notoriously horrible with a paint brush. When I draw, young children pat me on the back and reassure me that it looks like a flower, really. At Design by Wine I managed to complete something that looked relatively similar to the intended outcome and holds up nicely on a wall in our home. In a closet. Kidding. Seriously, we had so much fun. The price is really fair when you add up what you're getting: over two hours of relaxed but professional artistic instruction and a terrific work of art to take home, and they clean up your mess. The wine is extra, but again the prices are fair and believe me, this isn't your run-of-the-mill sugary sweet New Mexico vino, it's really excellent stuff, I thought the Shiraz was spectacular. ABQ needs more places like this, they add character and make life more dynamic and memorable. It looks like the word is getting around, too, classes are selling out. Very relaxing, creative afternoon. we brought snacks for our "break" time and walked thru the studio of this charming pottery studio. Even if you think you can't paint, you can and will have fun doing it! our 'tree' class was filled with all ages and everyone left with a masterpiece...ok maybe not a masterpiece but a sense of accomplishment Go with a group, go alone, tons of fun. Design By Wine was hands down, the funnest thing I've done (in a bldg) since moving to ABQ, NM. Everyone around you is down to have a good time and get creative. The instructor walks you through "EVERY STEP', so you do NOT have to be even remotely artistic, to bring home a beautiful piece of art you'll want to promptly display for all to see. You can purchase wine upon your arrival; I suggest you get there 15-20 minutes early to set up. Every thing's set up for you when you walk in; how many squirts of which paint color to get, the (5) brushes you'll need, paper towels, and a large cup of water. You can sit next to a friend or your partner; saw lots of couples and large parties. People brought food in to eat, so it smells yummy the entire time you're there. The instructor tells you what you need to do, turns off her mike, and on comes AWESOME music while you do as you were asked. Sometimes these steps take (5) minutes, other times they'll take longer. You will be there a minimum of 3.5 hours, so take dinner. By the end of the evening, ladies were dancing around w/their wine glasses; it was just a hoot!!! Do yourself a favor: go to this, take a friend or friends plural - take your kids, they'd LOVE it. I'll be going again next month w/my coworker; she introduced me to the classes & it's official, I feel like a female version of Jackson Pollack ..lol.. "Paint in good health"! Without repeating all the great info that everyone else has given here, I'll just add a few things. This was my second time doing the Design By Wine at Kelly Jo's. It is BY FAR the best place in ABQ to do the wine and painting (trust me, I've done the others and was not nearly as impressed). I love that you can choose the painting on their calender! Beverages are reasonably priced, even the wine. While the class sizes are typically big and sometimes crowded, I have always found that the instructor will come to you if you have questions. Everyone seated around you are typically pretty social, so this adds to the fun of conversation and joking. Second only to a spa day, this is the best girl's night in ABQ!!! Best tips: 1) arrive 15-20 min early to set up and get your bottle of wine. 2) if it falls during your dinner, bring snacks to eat (they do have some pretzel bowls for the table but not enough to everyone). read more

My friend invited me here for work event. I actually really enjoyed it. I loved the painting they had up already, some were really really good. The instructor was nice and funny. She decided to teach us how to paint a sunrise behind the Sandia mountains with hot air balloons floating. Her instructions were easy to follow. However, I had a little secret and already knew how to paint a bit. It was quite funny. Before teaching the clouds, she said that there is a certain way to paint them but since most of us were beginners and it would be difficult, she instructed us to paint squiggly white lines. Instead, using the little knowledge I had about painting and made my clouds more realistic. She came over and acknowledged my work and said these were the types of real clouds she was talking about. Afterwards, we were allowed to paint the balloons wherever and however we want. I decided to give my parent my finished work but I didn't get to take a picture of it to post it on here. Next time, I see them I'll definitely post it and show you guys. The food they provided were finger foods like sandwiches, chips, and veggies. I wasn't really in the mood for wine but they do provide it. Overall I really liked coming here and I'm glad my friend invited me to this event read more

I have another great review of a different aspect of Kelly Jo Designs by Wine. After having such a blast last time I approached them about hosting a fundraiser for the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center. It went SPECTACULARLY. Monday and Tuesday nights are fundraising nights. They handle the pre-registration so payment and signing people up is totally handled for you. That can really take up a lot of your time when you are running a special event, so to be able to outsource that headache is AWESOME. You just need to get people in the door. You have the option of making your night open to the public or making it a private event. You need a credit card to hold a deposit. A portion of the night's registration fees AND bar sales go to your organization! So we had a mix of staff, volunteers, interested community members, friends, and then an entire party who was not connected to our organization. We had a BLAST. Everyone mingled and painted and chatted, and we raised $$$ for an extremely important organization. It's amazing that Kelly Jo Designs by Wine provides such a great venue and experience and you should DEFINITELY go - date night, girls' night out, birthday party, team-building...it's fun for everyone! read more

I was at Kelly Jo Designs By Wine for a Yelp Elite event, Dia De Los Yelpers. Me and my fellow Yelpers were the first to partake in a new painting activity offered by Kelly Jo Designs: ceramic painting. Plus, it was the grand opening of their new beautifully designed patio! Beyond painting canvas, they are now offering ceramics painting. They produce the ceramic products right there in the studio too! For ceramic painting, you go in and pick your ceramic item. Each item is priced differently, depending on the item. Then let your creativity unleash. I must admit that I never considered creativity one of my strong qualities. But after leaving that evening, I felt so refreshed and accomplished. The skull I painting that night, in celebration of Dia De Los Muertos, got lots of compliments. I felt good about my art piece! It was a really relaxing, enjoyable and refreshing activity. I am certainly going to be coming back soon with my mom and daughter for a mother-daughter date night! I also really liked that they offered local wine and beer to enjoy as you partake in your creative activity. The owners were super friendly, helpful and inviting!
