Our go to restaurant whenever we're not sure of what we want to eat. Keno does American and Tex-Mex food really well. We have never been disappointed with anything we've ordered there. The waitresses are top notch and take great care of you. If you like onion rings order them here, they don't use frozen rings. read more

We ordered the fried shrimp, double salad and a roll. No fries. It was very good but the shrimp was a little too crunchy. Next time we will ask for softer shrimp, not cooked quite so long. Tea was great and so was the service. Nice quiet place. read more

I wish I could give this zero stars. I have been to kenos before but for breakfast and it's never been a "wow" experience. But more if an "it's ok" and breakfast prices are seriously decent. But food is just subpar. Today we decided that we would do lunch. I ordered the Turkey special. Came with a salad and chicken rice soup. The soup was very yellow had no flavor. Tons of celery. And the salad was just lettuce and tomato as u can see in picture. I guess I should of known the Turkey plate was going to be terrible The Turkey plate was disgusting. It consisted of a tower of what looked and tasted like boxed stove top stuffing topped with extremely dry shredded "turkey". (I'm more than certain it was chicken) smothered in some seriously yellow gravy! I've never seen fluorescent yellow gravy. The green beans had zero flavor and the mashed potatoes were definitely boxed as well. No taste. And corn. I will it was corn. They didn't even bother adding butter or anything special. The roll was gross and dry. The enchiladas plate was just as bad too. The waitress never came back to ask us if we wanted more water. We checked out and the lady asked us how it was we said terrible. She said. Wow no one's ever told us that before. I'm not sure who they're catering to but I can't imagine that they've never had a complaint at all. I mean they don't have 5 stars. I first went to Keno Cafe around 1979, I was in High School and our coach took us there as out of towners in a bus. He ordered chicken fried steak for all of us, I loved it since.I have lived all ovet south Texad since and I have come throughout the years sometimes years inbetween and always order the same thing. I ordered the same thing today, some 45 years since my first meal there. It looked exactly the same as did the restaurant. The chicken fried steak was just a little tough but still good. The roll had a very good taste but was not fresh, it seemed to have been microwaved and was a bit chewy. The plate should have had more fries. The staff was very nice and friendly. This place is nostalgic to me and I guess I will always be a customer. read more

Keno Cafe - ah, how I miss thee! I worked in Weslaco for the past 8 years (until I moved to Austin in Jan.) and Keno's Cafe is a great lil' place to stuff your face any time of the day. The service is quick, the food is delicious and the location is easily accessible from old 83 and Texas Blvd. I worked at the City Hall (a parking lot away) and they would deliver breakfast tacos and lunch plates if requested. Speaking of... their breakfast! My favorite were their bacon/bean tacos and they package a perfect little oatmeal breakfast that includes toast and all the fixins' you need (milk, honey, jam, cinnamon, butter, sugar, etc.) You can never go wrong with a "quickie" platter during the lunch rush - totally yummy hamburger steak with brown gravy, a heaping pile of french fries and a dixie roll - all for under $6.00. The place has been there FOR AGES - my dad said when he was a kid and his father would make runs up to that part of the valley, they would stop at Keno's for lunch or dinner... so, their longevity means they must be doing something right! read more

The food was good in spite of the waitress forgetting one item, a hot cake altogether. The "homemade" cinnamon roll was loaded with frosting (a bit too much) and the pecans on top were stale. The worst thing about this place was the bathroom. Very dirty, smelly, and moldy. What a shame. Will not be coming back. read more

We went for a late lunch. There were only two booths and 1 table that were eating. We sat down and waited for a menu, and waited and waited. There were three ladies at the cash register area talking, one a cashier, another without an apron, and another with an apron. Our waitress finally came from the back and brought us a menu and went and brought our water. We ordered and waited and waited and waited. Three additional groups, all Hispanic, came in and sat down. Same girl waited on two of them. All got chips, salsa and two got food. Finally she brought out my husbands order, on a hot plate....but the food, beans, rice, and enchiladas were cold. Not warm...cold. my food didn't appear. We complained, which is not our style, to the cashier and left to go to another restaurant. read more

My first time here since the renovation and ordered the beef enchiladas, w rice and beans...they weren't the best ive had, but thet were good. The inside looks modern, but after a while, it seemed like the music was not with the environment...and a tad bit to loud for a venue like this. Overall, it was a good place to eat lunch. read more

10/21/2015 keno cafe with the family! I'm from Dallas and brought my husband here. The dinner rolls were just like my dad use to get us when I was little! they didn't have the French dressing for my fries and gravy but Brissy said she will have some at our next visit! One star because food was semi-edible. Out of four orders, server got two wrong. One order redone and it was wrong a second time. I've been here before the new ownership and don't recall being this disappointed. All our food was bland and needed salt. Orders: 1) chicken fried chicken: needed salt; server forgot the Keno roll, forgot the chili/ cheese requested over fries, salad was wilted and disgusting., keno roll needed salt (really?!), brought the forgotten chili and cheese in a bowl and it seemed like gravy with bits of meat topped with shredded velveeta 2) hamburger basket: ordered plain and dry with only tomatoes- it came dressed to the nines with mustard and vegetables. Normally can just remove salad (which was also wilted) but my son will not stand for the mustard. Came back second time with no tomatoes. 3) Mexican deluxe plate: wilted salad ruined entire plate as it was over the chalupa and tacos, plus crispy rice from being too old! 4) chicken enchilada plate: chicken was gray and looked over processed. Rice was crispy and inedible again. Service was subpar. Had to get up to ask for a refill and silverware as she never returned to table after order was wrong and she forgot keno roll. Goes without saying, we won't return. read more

I have heard nothing but positive reviews from Keno's, so today I finally made the time to test it out. The establishment is very old. Nothing has been updated in years and there is an emptiness when you walk in. The waiter, however, was very friendly and prompt to get our drink order and serve our chips and store bought salsa immediately. Our food order was placed and within 10 minutes (maybe less) our order was out and served. Aside from a warm salad being served on a hot plate and given warm ranch dressing, the white gravy for my chicken fried chicken was bland. It tasted like flour mixed in warm water. Not appetizing. It was also difficult to cut my food w/ my knife since they apparently have the same silverware since they first opened in the 30's. At least the steak fries were delicious and the highlight were the rolls they serve with each meal. Those were actually delicious and fresh. Another plate which was ordered at my table was the grilled catfish strips. Even though they were fried, they were very tasty, light and not greasy at all. And the homemade tarter sauce was delish as well... I just wished they would have chilled it. (Maybe their refrigerator was on the blink today?) Overall, it was an alright experience. The food is descent, but not enough to strike my fancy and return again. If they did a few updates and chilled items which needed to be cooled then my partially negative review would have been completely positive. read more
