It's operated and maintained by the local volunteer group, Waimea Outdoor Circle. There is a nice stream coming through along with a walking trail nearby. The park also has covered picnic areas, and many of the benches are located beneath shade trees or along the stream. You'll also find a native plant garden and various memorials dedicated to past gardeners. There is on-site parking but it is very limited. Great nature park overall!

When you arrive, parking for hikers is recommended not at the valley parking lot but on the side road leading to the parking lot as the valley parking lot is for those who are just visiting the lookout and not hiking. Once you walk towards the trail entrance, there are a couple of people waiting to assist hikers. They discuss the safety protocol and warnings when visiting. There is no time limit to how long you can be down there but because no swimming is allowed, i have found people stay only about half an hour before heading back up. We recommend wearing hiking shoes because the ascend is not easy and have seen people struggling.

At Māhukona Beach Park, the shoreline is rocky and lacks a sandy beach. There is a swimmers ladder in the old harbor. Fishing, snorkeling, picnic areas, and camping are available. At the south end of the park you'll find an unmarked trail that leads to a view of the old Mahukona Lighthouse. Next time we'll plan on snorkeling here. If you do snorkel/swim, remember to use reef-safe sunscreen.

There's a decent sized playground and lots of room for kids to run around and get out some energy. We usually bring baseballs and gloves, a frisbee and a Nerf football. Plan on staying awhile. Pick up lunch at nearby Parker Ranch Center and have lunch and let the kids play. It can get chilly in Kamuela, so bring a sweatshirt or a jacket for the kiddies. If your kid(s) get tired of this playground, head back to Anuenue Playground and hope that the crowds have left, and your kid(s) can burn off even more energy running around that expansive playground. And hopefully, they will either take a nap when you get back to your hotel room or go to bed early that evening :)

A hidden gem rich in Hawaiian history, wildlife, and outstanding staff!…read more ​If you want to experience authentic Hawaiian history away from the crowded resort beaches, Kaloko-Honokōhau is a must-visit in Kona. ​Walking along the coastal trails gives you an incredible look at ancient Hawaiian engineering. The Kaloko Fishpond (loko iʻa) and massive stone seawalls built without mortar are mind-blowing to see up close. Along the paths, you can also spot ancient petroglyphs carved into the lava rock and historic heiau (temple) sites. ​Highlights of our visit: ​Honu (Green Sea Turtles): We saw multiple sea turtles resting on the shoreline at ʻAiʻōpio Beach near the harbor. Remember to give them plenty of space! (20ft to be exact) ​Cultural History: The park does a fantastic job preserving the spirit of how native Hawaiians lived and farmed aquaculture centuries ago. ​Exceptional Staff (Special shoutout to Ranger K. Cartee!) Park Ranger K. Cartee made our visit extra special. She was so polite, knowledgeable about the land and wildlife, and had absolute wonderful energy while answering all of our questions. When I asked about the walk to the beach, she explained it was about a mile each way from the main lot, but took the extra time to give us a game-changing tip: driving down to the boat yard road leads to a short, easy 10-minute walk instead. There was a welcome tent with volunteer "auntie and uncle", to provide more in depth information, and realistic warnings. You are using trail at your own risk. No cell towers so if you hurt yourself, someone needs to go to tent... they have a satellite phone to call in emergency services. Definitely no flip flops, as trail is very slippery and muddy. So, is it worth it? Yes! Please know your limitations, but if hiking down slowly and have good cardio going back up, it's a good accomplishment. The views going down are beautiful, you get a good sense of nature, and feel the serenity of the beach below. The area is sacred and be respectful.
