Chicken lo mein and crab wontons
Danielle E.

I would give 5 stars but I did not receive my exact order. I ordered shrimp lo mein and received chicken (I hope it's chicken) lo mein. Also, I ordered a Pepsi and got a sprite. But because the food is so good I really can't be too mad. It's delicious!

I really enjoyed my experience at Toki Underground!…read more Toke Underground a small bar and restaurant in the H st corridor which seems to be most well known for its ramen offerings. We got there nice and early on a Friday to enjoy the happy hour which is available from 4-6 on weekdays. As a part of happy hour they had several cocktails and small bites for $10 or less. I had the pumpkin spice spritz and an order of the fried chicken bites - both were really really good. I'd order both items again. For awareness, they limit dining in to about an hour and a half - because the restaurant is fairly small, they want folks to make their seats available for other guests pretty quickly. They weren't rude about enforcing this time limit, but they definitely tell you up front and quickly gather your orders/plates to help move you though the meal quickly. This is a nice date spot - it's coziness would make for the perfect ambiance in you're looking to grab a bite with that special someone. Pro tip: Be careful not to walk past it! The signage outside isn't the best, so it's very easy to miss the door completely (as I did).

TLDR: would recommend, decent ramen. Appetizers are great and the drinks are well made. Definitely…read morenot good for a large party size due to restaurant size. Servers are very attentive and come by very often. Must Try: Shrimp Naruto Atmosphere/Setting: very small place with dim lighting. This isn't the place to have your birthday celebration with a Partiful of 20 people. It's moreso catching up with a friend or having a good meal after a long day alone. Food: it's a ramen spot but honestly I've had better ramen but this one is pretty good. I think the appetizers are moreso the star of the show ! Appetizers : Shrimp Naruto (10/10) , Brussels Okonomiyaki (8/10) , Yuzu Rootbeer Wings (6/10) Shrimp Naruto is phenomenal , literally my favorite. I wanted to like to e wings but they were too soft for my liking. If they were fried harder or had a bit more of a crunch I'd rank them higher because the flavor is there. Drinks: both drinks were great !

With…read morefood that is inspired by Taiwan and Cambodia, the dishes vary in taste and flavor that makes me quite happy. In my first visit to Maketto, I came for their dim sum lunch on the weekend, and even though I had high expectations coming in, it met my every desire. We started with the pork steamed bao, and man it didn't disappoint. With a hoisin sauce spread on the plate and plenty of hoisin sauce flavoring the pork, this homemade beauty was my favorite of the lot. Having eaten so many bao buns in my past, this one stood out among many I've eaten across Asia. We also ordered the Xaio Long Bao, the Cambodian Noodle Soup, and the Rice Roll with Shrimp. The star of these was the Rice Roll w/shrimp. The shrimp was excellent, the Rice Roll itself was perfect and the toppings and sauce made me want to order more. The Cambodian Noodle Soup was great as well. True to form, we had it with the chicken and it was a perfect encapsulation of the Cambodian soups that I so loved when visiting. Service was good, but most importantly the food came out piping hot. A must with this style of cuisine. The only exception was the Xaio Long Bao, but that could have been due to the sauce cooling the dumplings. As for ambiance, it is a unique model as it is a coffee shop before 11, and then a restaurant and coffee shop after 11. We came around 11:30 and it was in between selling out of all their pop-up pastries and ramping up the kitchen. I will be back, many times indeed.

First things first did you know that Maketto has been around for 11 years! That's amazing, especially for a small business. And I fully understand why, because this place is a gem. Maketto is a Cambodian, Taiwanese blend restaurant that is surprisingly open from 9 am- 10 pm most days. I love the vibes, the exposed brick, the food, drinks, and the bartender was super friendly. So my friend was telling me that the restaurant used to be half retail store and half restaurant. I'm sure I would've wanted to come in here just to browse all the time because they're definitely trendy and in tune with the culture. Now to my experience. I tried their fried chicken wings and the lo mein. Both are medium plates and large portions. Between my friend and I we were stuffed at the end of dinner and still took some food to-go. All of their dishes come family style and they are not skimping you with the portions. The food was all fresh and soooo flavorful! Kudos to chef Erik, who also owns/created Providencia up the street. I'm so excited to come back to try more because everything sounds delicious. One little word of advice is to check if the restaurant has a private event booked before heading over. I recently tried to go for an early dinner on a Saturday and there was a wedding getting ready to happen. BRAVOOO Maketto, I will be supporting frequently :)

I typically get the chickn fingers and I like all three sauces--the firecracker being my favorite. They are very crispy and texture is very similar to meat. I've had some of the bowls, like General tso, but I don't particularly like their rice, so I always opt for salad instead. The Dan Dan carbonara is scrumptious. The cashew base sauce is creamy but not too heavy and the plant based pork meat is a nice complement. I also enjoy sides like the brussel sprouts, broccoli and trolley fries. The fried cauliflower has a bit too much breading for me. They have great happy hour deals and food comes out relatively fast. Staff are always friendly!

The sauce that came with them was actually quite good though! For the mains, my Mongolian beef was too dry and lacked flavor. Her noodles + fried chicken were pretty decent. We both ordered coffee. I had an ube flavored one and couldn't really taste the flavor, and she had a strawberry matcha but couldn't taste the matcha at all. Quantity wise, the food is great and the staff was super sweet :) but realistically, I wouldn't go here again.

Overall, the food was good. Once seated, a server hands you an iPad where you'll order your food. To feed two adults and one child, all hungry, we ordered dan dan noodles, orange chicken, cucumbers, BBQ pork bao, pork dumplings, and, of course, soup dumplings. Every dish had good flavor. The dan dan noodles are more soupy compared to nearby Copycat, but it was still good. One odd thing that may be a one off, but worth noting is the wait time. With one other person there and no takeout pickups and three people in the kitchen, it took 35 minutes to get our first dishes. Over an hour later, we got our final dish- orange chicken. We couldn't figure out why there was such a long wait especially when other spots bring out the cucumbers within minutes of ordering. We were hungry so it added to the emotions, but worth calling out in case you're a rush.

Mecha is by far my new favorite ramen spot! I can't believe I haven't done a review already…read more First things first, you have to get the edamame. This is the most uniquely prepared edamame I've ever had. It's packed with herbs and spices and so flavorful that you won't go back to regular edamame after trying it here. I've ordered quite a few items off the menu, and I've been equally satisfied every time. I've had the Pho Ga and the Shoyu Paitan...both were so delicious. They come with extras so you can customize your bowl with hoisin, chili flakes, and more, which I love. One time I went with a friend who's pescatarian, and we ordered the Cha Ca La Bong (catfish). It was incredibly flavorful and filling. It's served cold, a delicious sauce. But don't let this cold dish fool you ...it does not disappoint. We also ordered the General Tso shrimp, and I got the sweet-and-sour spareribs. Everything was delicious. As for drinks, I don't quite remember which frozen one I ordered, but it didn't give much of a buzz. The regular alcoholic drinks, though? They definitely got the job done. Every time I've gone, the service has been excellent. Everyone is welcoming, smiling, and genuinely seems proud to serve you. I also appreciate that if you don't finish your ramen, they box it up thoughtfully, packing the broth and noodles separately so it stays fresh. Highly recommend!

Many of the tables have benches on one side and small stool on the other; it's fine, but not the most comfy. Tables are also loaded with the basic chopsticks, napkins, menus, and condiments you need. We tried the Kale Salad, Red Oil Dumplings, Firecracker Wings, Spicy Miso 2.0 ramen, and Tonkotsu 3.0 ramen. The kale salad was fine but a little lame. The wings weren't "firecracker" -- not spicy at all -- but had a very nice dry rub and smoky flavor (very similar to the wings at Succotash). The dumplings were enormous and pretty good, but I wish the sauce stuck to the dumplings better. Ramen was also good; I preferred the Spicy Miso over the Tonkotsu. Service was a little too basic. We had to flag down a waiter to get water, water wasn't refilled, the check and pay pad weren't picked up quickly, and I got the wrong ramen order.
