Alder Manor is also referred to as the W.B. Thompson Mansion. Built in 1912, it's an officially protected historical site. First built by a mining magnate, then turned into a high school, then a junior college, then abandoned. At this point in its history it doesn't come off as a perfectly preserved landmark, which gives it much of its character. It is filled with rooms upon rooms, some of which are still waiting for restoration. Behind it is a newer building, looking very much like a small HS. The property is nice and large. Although not in prestige condition, it gives off a strong sense of elegance. I'm not sure what the price would be to rent the space. But whether it be an elaborate party or a massive wedding, this would be a fantastic space for most events.

The garden is romantic and wild, and there are a variety of outdoor spaces that can be used for cocktails. The hall is huge and beautiful with many rooms that you are free to use - perfect for designing your event in whatever way you like. There are great dining spaces, dancing spaces, and lounge spaces with vaulted ceilings, marble, and hard wood with many lighting options. They are just getting going as a major event space and some things can be improved. Here are some specifics of our experience that might be helpful both to them and to you if you are planning an event there: On the Caterer - Sergio, owner of Chefs at Work is the exclusive caterer for the event space. He is an outstanding chef, will work long and hard with you to ensure that the food is exactly what you want, and it will be delicious and beautifully presented. That's the very good news. The less good news is that he is not a good manager. He went through several event managers while we were working with him and just when we would get to know one and actually get our phone calls returned, she would disappear and we would have to start over. Hopefully this was just growing pains and he will find someone permanent who will take over that side of the operation. Be a little careful there though if you are the kind of person who gets frustrated with not having phone calls returned. Make sure he has someone who is planning to be around for a while (or even better by the time you read this, has actually already been around for a while) and can take on the event-planning side of things. On the Florist - Susan, the house florist (not required) is not to be recommended. We started with her as a default because she knows the event space. Her quote came out a factor of two higher than another local florist for the same set of flowers so we were thinking of hiring the other florist. We talked it over with Susan and she said that she could bring the price down to something reasonable by using in-season flowers, etc. We agreed on a specific set of flowers that we love, wrote specifics into the contract, and signed on with her. Unfortunately, the flowers that showed up were not the flowers that we agreed on and the larger arrangements in particular were really not very nice. We were very disappointed. To make matters worse, part of the contract specified that she was to bring baby bush roses to be used to the cake. She didn't do this at all and we ended up having to scramble with some full-sized roses brought for something else. Find someone else.

The smell and piles of garbage at the entrance was atrocious we had to pay someone to clean and remove it. The inside smelling like pure marijuana and while having to clean finding reside and left behind drug bags. This entire experience was upsetting and extremely unprofessional I even took pictures and send it to the management and they deliberately ignore my messages. Do not waste your time or money on renting this hall. This is very sad because it is a space with potential just in the wrong hands.

I was there as a guest of a member but I was so utterly impressed by the people I met and honestly everything about the place. They have a beautiful long pier and the main building (clubhouse ?) was really nice for private parties that can be rented to non-club members. One of the most memorable weddings I've ever been to. Traveled from LA for this wedding, and it was worth it! The food at the reception was incredibly diverse, offering a wide range of options.

We recently hosted a bridal shower for a friend and it was such a bad experience. The owner or manager was very unprofessional over the phone. The two assistants were incredibly rude. An attitude for literally everything that came out of their mouths. They were also dressed like they were going to hang out (hoodies and sneakers). I was really surprised by this. We also had very little help setting up. They spent most of their time in the kitchen talking to each other. The only thing they really did was serve the food and clean up, but we really could have used their help in other ways. It angers me because people already see the Bronx as a less than ideal part of the city, and I was really optimistic after seeing the space initially and reading reviews, but I guess I was wrong. Overall, if you're going for a space with unprofessional workers that are mostly useless to host your event, you're at the right place.

She was responsive, understanding, and flexible throughout the booking process that we truly appreciated. As we got closer to the wedding, Ralph became our main point of contact and he was our Maitre'D. He was incredibly communicative, practical, and reassuring. He helped us work through the last-minute changes and was always focused on finding a solution. We originally chose Whitby Castle because having an outdoor ceremony on the grounds was part of our dream. Unfortunately, due to an intense heatwave, we moved the ceremony indoors at the last minute. I was nervous that it would not have the same feeling, but the space felt elegant, intimate, and beautiful, and our photographs still captured everything we loved. There were a few hiccups throughout the day as well, but the venue including Ralph and Rosa (bridal attendant) remained accommodating and worked well with every one of our vendors to keep things moving. They took care of us that day in moments where no one else was paying attention, and we are eternally thankful to them for that. Whitby Castle is a stunning venue, but also one with a team that genuinely tries to support its couples. The serving staff was accommodating, professional and polite. Everything I asked for was done. The owner and event planner was communicating with me every step of the way. The event space was recommended to my cousin via an event planner that knew/worked with the owner during the initial phase of scouting venues. Upon reaching out to her to schedule the tour of the venue, the message we got back from her via the event planner was something the along the lines of "please be on time because she has things to do" now I'm not saying this was the exact words BUT it was along those lines. Now, we went to see the space the next day. Not only did she now show up or communicate that she wasn't showing up, she sends someone who if not mistaken, is her dad and he was late :). He was very nice I must say. Probably the only pleasant encounter I had the entire process (and the reason I actually booked). Being that he couldn't answer any in depth business questions, we followed up with the owner with questions. It was pretty cut and dry, but in my mind I'm thinking this is a Black woman business owner and I rather give my people my money. She asked what time would we need the space because events after midnight requires security. I told her I'm looking to have my event 8-midnight or 8-1am, would that mean that I have to get security for 1 hour? She tells me, oh you would need it from 8pm-1am for an additional $130. Yea ok miss ma'am because that's NOT what you just said lol. Keep in mind, this event space is NOT cheap. It's $2500 PLUS a $300 refundable deposit if the venue is turned over clean and on time. I had my cousin speak to her from day 1 because I knew deep down in my soul I was going to curse her out for being rude, condescending and unaccommodating. Fast forward from October to January. The venue was booked from 6pm-2am as she only allows an 8 hr slot. That gives me 2 hrs to decorate the space. I asked my cousin to ask if there's anyway we can get in the space any earlier she says $150. My cousin went back to her to plead, asked if she had another event before mine and she said she didn't. She is just HARD for no reason. She eventually compromised to allow 30 minutes earlier. The ONLY accommodations she provided me, was allowing me to pay the balance on the day of event. It is now Jan 28, my team is at event space ready to set up at 5:15pm (remember she said we can have the space at 5:30pm instead of 6pm). At 5:45pm I arrived and everyone is still outside. My cousin calls her and her response is "technically, y'all paid for 6pm so someone is on the way to open the venue" Can you believe that? Lol. Someone finally shows up to open the venue and we walk into an unclean venue. There was a bucket of dirty water and a mop that smells like death in the doorway. There was flowers that was probably from a repass service or something, amongst other things. So not only did she not stick to her word to get us in 30 minutes earlier which I needed to decorate for my OWN event, but she opens the venue at 6 and we have to clean up before we start decorating. We had to call to get help with turning on the air and to adjust the lighting. Like noone was present to help or instruct us on anything. Fast forward to after the event. I had the space until 2am. We started wrapping up around 12:30 because my dj was booked until 1am and he had another booking after my event. At around 1:15am, a random maid was walking around my party asking for "Lorraine". At this time I had 6 out of 8 tables, completely cleared with chairs up, the last 2 tables being worked on, lights are on, dj is 90% packed up, 85% of my guests are GONE. As I am speaking to a few guests this maid interrupts the conversation and says "I'm looking for Lorraine?" So I said "do you mean LORI-ANN? Because I'm her." And she's like "oh yea, I just wanted you to know that the owner is on the way and you guys can begin cleaning up" LOL. So I pointed to the event space and asked her, "what does it look like is happening here?" before turning my back to continue the conversation. This is my BIRTHDAY. I am sending my guests off and you interrupt me, call me the WRONG name and speaking to be in a condescending tone? Furthermore, I have the space until 2am! If I decide to start cleaning at 1:59am that's ON ME. She has my deposit (and thank GOD I only gave her $100 vs $300 on the deposit).
