From the National Register, where the Jail was listed in 1971, "The 1823 Lancaster County Jail is a significant example of Robert Mills architecture and reflects his innovative ideas on the proper construction of penal institutions. The jail is a stuccoed brick building of three stories with Palladian style stone quions and stringcourses. It features a gable roof, iron grates, first floor windows and doors within recessed arches, and gable parapets with coping and a raised center section. Although Mills never signed his buildings and often failed to sign his plans, a number of building characteristics and facts substantiate the 1823 jail is his design. Some characteristics of Mills' work are the following: Mills advocated free circulation of air in jail construction, and this was achieved in the Lancaster County Jail by placing barred cages for prisoners in the middle of the room; the absence of a dungeon reflects a Mills innovation in penal reform; classifying prisoners according to their crime was a Mills recommendation, and this was achieved in the Lancaster County Jail by placing prison rooms for debtors on the first floor and other cells were on the second floor; Mills was a member of the Board of Public Works for the State of South Carolina from 1820-1830, and he was referred to in public documents of that period as the 'State Engineer and Architect.'" They change up the security procedures all the time (sometimes your forced to remove your hoodie/shoes/ & empty your pockets) & other times your not. They will give you an attitude for asking a simple question. The security officers seem to really hate their jobs (which I can't blame them) & I've gotten attitude from several for asking questions. You can tell they're here only to pay their bills because that's the best their GED equivalent diplomas could get them in life. I hear all the time of widespread abuse & prisoner beatings happening here so "excessive force" is obviously something this prison is grappling with. Lots of contraband (like drugs, knives, & tobacco) get smuggled in here (no surprise) so they can do better. Avoid at all costs.

Mace is excessively used to the point that your eyes burn just from being inside. I have a huge concern about the amount of men that are in the women's area. There is no need to have 3-4 men "guarding". Mr.Rodriguez in particular clearly has emotional issues he enjoys taking out on the women. It's obvious he enjoys the job because he can exert control. He is not there because he believes in rehabilitation. His actions I witnessed for a short period of time made me physically sick. It was no shock to me to learn that a woman died there not too long ago, due to being ignored and treated as a burden. Shame on you Moore county. They can't even be bothered to pick up a phone let alone provide basic life saving medical care. There were a very small amount of officers who appeared to actually be making a difference in people's life, such as Mr.Frye. It's evident he genuinely cares about recovery and how he can help others. However, any efforts are waisted at this facility. I would legitimately rather go to Alcatraz or Guantanamo than Moore County.

While…read moreI submitted the paperwork in July for a permit that was due to expire in October, it took until January for it to be approved. And it took a lawsuit. It seems that out of the 100 counties in the Tarheel State, Mecklenburg is the ONLY ONE that is requiring mental health records from the VA even for applicants who swear under oath that they have never served in the military. Yes, the VA is quite backed up with responding to the multitude of requests and they're certainly in no bigger rush to search for records of people who have no records to find. No other county does this. Not Wake, not Durham, not even Buncombe County is asking the VA for mental health records. Under Sheriff McFadden, Mecklenburg is the only one. North Carolina is a "must issue" state which means that unless the sheriff has an articulable reason to deny a permit, they are required to approve or deny within 45 days of receiving the paperwork. Mecklenburg is choosing to declare that the 45 days only starts ticking when they have received the responses from the SIX state hospitals and in 2022/2023, the VA is taking several months to respond. The lawsuit was filed against the sheriff and a response was due within 30 days. According to the signed response provided to the court, my permit was approved three days before the deadline of the response. I can only wonder if it would have been processed in the same (slow) timeline if I had not signed on as a plaintiff. North Carolina law states that an expired permit is valid until the replacement is either denied or approved, as long as the renewal was applied for before expiration. Mine was applied four months before expiration, so I was allowed to continue to carry in North Carolina (I also carried a printout of the statute in case there were questions). But I was unwilling to risk carrying a concealed weapon in any of the nearly three dozen other states that honor North Carolina permits as I did not believe they would honor North Carolina law. A right delayed is a right denied. As such, I remain disappointed with the Sheriff of Mecklenburg County. I doubt they'll change voluntarily. They believe that they're correct. I disagree. We'll see what the courts say. After the recent Supreme Court decision in Bruen, I believe the Sheriff will have no choice but to change. SCI hosted me for twenty-two of a thrity-five month sentence, which ended just before 2015. As…read moreprisons go, I found it to be delightful. If Mayberry RFD had a prison, this would be it. It's on a lovely tract of land on the edge of a national forest, so fresh air is abundant. The staff is not power hungry, but laid back like Troy, the sleepy town in which the prison is located. Finding an agreeable Sargent to assist with a bunk switch is usually no problem, and shakedowns are relatively rare and painless.The yard plenty of benches and shady areas to kick back and relax, along with full basketball and paved volleyball courts. The inmate population is relatively small, so canteen lines were usually a breeze, and chow call is not the ordeal one can find elsewhere. Perhaps the finest feature of SCI is the visitation area, which is across the parking lot in a tree covered grass area that felt much more like a park than prison. Spacious enough to get a stealth handy is one scores a spot in the right area, with no one the wise, especially if the more lax guard shift (they both are, pretty much) is on duty. The interior is kept in good repair, and I'm happy to report each inmate has his own plastic chair, which can be stationed at the foot of one's bunk for convenience when not in use in a day room. Six foot high lockers double as partitions between bunks, which I found helpful for privacy and blocking the wind from the industrial strength fans posted on the walls. Even cells in the hole aren't too bad, as they feature sizable windows from which one can gaze and out recall what partial freedom felt like. These windows can also be opened or closed with the help of willing passersby. TV rooms were abundant, featuring 32" flat screens and plenty of viewing options, including two different football games at the same time on weekends. On the flip side, the radio sucked, both the station options and indoor reception. Give the above raves, one might wonder why only three stars instead of five. North Carolina summers with no air conditioning, that's why. Unless a nigga is lucky enough to sleep in the Mod, it's hotter than a brick oven most of the time. Also, the toilets are jail-style, i.e. seat and bowl all-in-one. In other words, my low hanging scrotum edged the top of the water line, and no inmate deserves this, regardless of his crime. Another problem is no hot and cold knobs for the showers -- merely the push button, one temp fits all. While the water wasn't set to scalding by any means, it still sucked. The remote setting of SCI, while pleasant for air quality, proved to be a double edged sword. Work release options sucked, and community volunteers were few and far between. Basically, unless one was lucky enough to have a good AA sponsor there weren't many guys getting a change of scenery while wearing civvies. * While I give SCI a hearty three stars, if you're taking about the Mod experience, it's an easy 4+. Their chaplain is rude and obnoxious talking out of his ass like they all do pretty much. I've dealt with better prisons than this one. Its un called for how they do. My fiancee is currently there I'll be glad when he makes honor grade and gets out of there. Southern correctional Institution is ridiculous. Avoid this prison at all cost.. This place is more fit for animals not people. They treat the inmates like crap like at all prisons. The officers lying all the time on the inmates. These inmates go through enough being ridiculed for what people think they done. They are human beings too. Officers and staff want respect well respect the inmates interact with them get on their good side these inmates deserve respect and rights in life even in there. The only people that's nice is the receptionist and the lady in the mail room. The rest of em you might as be nice to a rat as opposed to be nice to them. They got custody levels mixed. Which is a no no it's a close custody camp. Used to be for women recently changed it to male. Again avoid this place if you can help it.

It was a criminal case and I really enjoyed listening to the attorneys and the judge who thanked everyone for their time. The building is huge and ornate as well. Who knew they had a Cafe on the 1st floor? Lunch was pretty good: fried chicken well seasoned with that lovely brown "you know it was cooked all the way" color, collard greens and macaroni and cheese. Worth going in person to see how things work. All in All it was a good day.

I was at the courthouse for Jury duty. I spent the entire 8 hours reading a book and listening to…read moremusic. I was welcomed to the courthouse by the extremely "friendly" security staff. They got the job done through and ensured everyone was safe going into the building. I was very disappointed that the drink machine was out of order when they had advertised online that you could purchase refreshments in the waiting area. Towards the end of the day, I did find out that you can leave the waiting area to purchase drinks and snacks from vending machines on another floor. They really should have posted a sign indicating this information on their broken vending machines. Although I did not get picked to be on a jury, I enjoyed sitting in a comfortable chair and reading my book for 8 hours. Hopefully I don't have to go back soon.
