we arrived late morning for a quick breakfast before touring the anne frank house. there wasn't a wait and we were seated promptly. i loved the natural and dim lighting because it created a great atmosphere to just sit back and enjoy the food. i ordered plain coffee and an omelet with tomato, and was super satisfied with my order. all drinks come with an adorable mini almond financier and in my opinion, the omelet was cooked really well. it had a thin and delicate skin and runny innards, similar to the omelets on top of japanese omurices. i will mention that the omelet lacked salt for me but there's salt and pepper at the table available for you to use. this went down eeaasy. they were out of the crepes, which i had wanted to try, so that was a bummer. all good! i recommend kessens if you want a simple breakfast fix, since most of their breakfast items are no frills and plain, which allow the ingredients to shine. read more

I am a patient person and I waited to be seated despite seeing about 10 free open tables around me. It was late morning. The waitstaff were kind enough but this one grumpy gentleman at the front - perhaps the owner - didn't even look up and I guess he's in charge... because the waitstaff looked uncomfortable when I asked if I could please have a seat. The coffee was excellent, like I've had all over Holland. #Kessens is a wonderful cafe--great service, clean, with a small but diverse menu that changes often for lunch. I recommend a visit. Like all places that I ate in Holland, you can linger at Kessens; no one will rush you out the door. Quite a different vibe from American food establishments in D.C. or many parts of U.S.A. I really love this little Swedish cafe. They have a lovely interior that sets a calming atmosphere. The cappuccino was good but not incredible, but I think that's the nature of cappuccinos, so I'm not mad. The food wasn't stellar, I had an open face salmon sandwich, again, good but not great. The only thing I really loved was the lemon merengue cake. I recommend getting a cake and a cup of coffee so that the bitterness cuts through the sweet cake. If you want some peace and quiet in this lovely shop, go during an off hour. It's a great place to sit and study. When there are a lot of people, the wifi isn't great, so keep that in mind. We usually ordered eggs with toast and a coffee, it was a great thing to look forward to each morning, knowing that we didn't have to find another place to eat or decide upon each morning. Coffee is tough in Holland, it seems difficult to order just a plain cup of drip coffee. We tried flat whites and americanos, but both were not quite right. Flat Whites have too much foam. I only have one complaint about Kessens - that we didn't have more time. It's a great little space, very modern in decor, with very attentive servers (and the only place that offered free water). This is an example of the great Café culture in Europe: great coffee, good food, relaxing atmosphere. Plus, for tourists from the US, the people working there speak better English than Americans. The cafe is in the Jordaan, on a main thoroughfare, but it belies its location. With not a hint of tourist appeal, it is a place I would recommend for a relaxing morning coffee or breakfast. My wife and I both had coffee (not the "American" kind, but the excellent European style where they also give you little muffins with a subtle almond flavor), and breakfast of eggs and toast. I also added mushrooms and smoked salmon as well, which made for a great meal to start the day. Also, they sell the muffins They serve with the coffee for €3.95; we bought a bag to bring back to the US with us and have been enjoying them with our coffee for the week we've been back. read more

We ordered the Welsh Rarebit (7,95) which was so flavorful and delicious esp if you like cheese and spicy chutney. My favorite was the holtkamp croquettes kalfcroqet (veal, 9,50) for two with fresh bread, it was so so flavorful and just enough of crisp but not too oily or overly fried. We found Kessens one late morning while walking through the city. Pretty easy to find, and central to a lot of other shops and boutiques. I was a little uneasy about the mixed reviews, but I'm more than happy that we decided to go anyway. The service was great from the moment we stepped through the door. The ambiance and atmosphere is very modern and pleasant. It was nice and bright, and the staff took very good care of us with smiles! My boyfriend and I were both extremely happy with our food. (That was the first REAL salad I'd had in some time so I was beyond ecstatic.) Prices were reasonable, I think for the portions we got it was more than enough for the both of us to share and leave full and content. And the dessert was to DIE for!
