Walked in a cold winter afternoon for some warm brunch and came to the perfect spot. This place was busy and I think we got lucky a table just opened up so I would recommend a reservation. Food was just what I needed to get me back on the streets of Amsterdam!! Aye turn it up!!

Step off the streets of Amsterdam into LA. That's immediately what it felt like once inside. The restaurant is clean, quiet, and all the patrons seem to be having intimate/semi-important conversations. Totally fine, just... it felt like we could've been in Austin or California at that very moment. We ordered coffee, cheese toast, and the chocolate croissant. The cappuccinos were brought out first and were perfect. Then the cheese toast and chocolate croissant came out. The cheese toast came with a slice of toasted multi-grain bread, softened butter, and slices of the most delicious Gouda. It's the definition of simplicity, executed perfectly. The croissant was warm, buttery, and made a nice crispy crunch when biting into it. The chocolate spread was delightful and was a wonderful way to start the day. This isn't a quick place to step inside for coffee and croissants. Be prepared to sit down, relax, and be served some delicious, high-quality food from people who care about details.

Is... is... is it true? You're saying that the mystical, #aestheticaf, thumb-stopping Instagram pic of a modern hipster restaurant in a foreign locale (for that millennial je nais sais quoi), the one that you double tap whenever you see it in your feed, actually exists in real life? And it's even better than you had even imagined? Yes, in Jordaan--a picture perfect neighborhood with a cluster of some of the most beautiful canal houses in Amsterdam. Home to effortlessly European cool boutiques and Kessens, the previously described restaurant. It's open all day, perfect for those whose jet lag has their stomachs growling at 3:30 p.m. Its appropriate all-day menu is influenced by a variety of different European countries: Sweden (gravad lax and toast skagen, both with plenty of dill à la Scandinavian cuisine), Britain (welsh rarebit sandwiches), the U.S. (the server's kindness!) and, well, the Netherlands (Dutch croquettes). I enjoyed a delicious and filling open-faced smoked trout sandwich, which was worth every cent of the slightly inflated Jordaan price I paid for it at €10.95. Your confused circadian rhythm still leaving you without an appetite? The other two soups that we tried were beyond flavorful as well, without feeling too heavy in your stomach.

Cutest little iced lattes with these little muffins! Coffee was very good and service is great

The best breakfast place! The service was welcoming and helpful, and the ambiance was the perfect cafe. I ordered the avocado toast with a scrambled egg, and they were able to accommodate the change I made. Cute and cozy place with great food to enjoy a morning in Amsterdam.

Perfect little brunch place. Enjoyed the unique options and atmosphere. The asparagus soup was perfect for a chilly day and the steak sandwich was also very delicious.

Best meal in Amsterdam. Stumbled in here after a long walk and felt so fortunate to get a table. I forget exactly what we ordered for dinner but you can't really make a mistake here. Most memorable was the dessert: Apple Pie (in America, crumble in the UK) amazing here!

Perfect cozy breakfast spot in Amsterdam. Great espresso drinks, super friendly sweet service. Food was great. Highly recommend the shrimp croquettes, they were my favorite in Amsterdam. Spent two mornings here and would spend more!

Stopped here for breakfast after visiting the Anne Frank House! Amazing breakfast! Large portions, all fresh food, and great coffee! Highly recommend!

Kessens is a light and bright cafe about one block from Anne Frank House. I thought I'd try Dutch food--so I ordered the shrimp croquette with brown bread. The croquette inside was like cream shrimp soup with a few bits of minced shrimp. Not at all what I was expecting; not terrible either just not what I would have picked to eat had I known. The coffee was excellent, like I've had all over Holland. #Kessens is a wonderful cafe--great service, clean, with a small but diverse menu that changes often for lunch. I recommend a visit. Like all places that I ate in Holland, you can linger at Kessens; no one will rush you out the door. Quite a different vibe from American food establishments in D.C. or many parts of U.S.A. The yogurt bowl is large and had more than the usual fruit, it also had kiwi, pomegranate, almonds, and grapes along with the goodies from granola. Chow! food chick

This place is simple yet very elegant. The staff is friendly and the location is great. I had a beer accompanied by scrambled eggs and toast and it made my day.

I really love this little Swedish cafe. They have a lovely interior that sets a calming atmosphere. The cappuccino was good but not incredible, but I think that's the nature of cappuccinos, so I'm not mad. The food wasn't stellar, I had an open face salmon sandwich, again, good but not great. The only thing I really loved was the lemon merengue cake. I recommend getting a cake and a cup of coffee so that the bitterness cuts through the sweet cake. If you want some peace and quiet in this lovely shop, go during an off hour. It's a great place to sit and study. When there are a lot of people, the wifi isn't great, so keep that in mind. Lastly, the staff was very friendly.

    Flat white, on point.

The Airbnb where we stayed had a copy of Kessens menu, so we took that as a recommendation. We came every day and enjoyed a great breakfast, good service, and a nice cup of coffee. The reviews are good, and they are well-founded. The service is perfect for breakfast. Just Swift and helpful. We usually ordered eggs with toast and a coffee, it was a great thing to look forward to each morning, knowing that we didn't have to find another place to eat or decide upon each morning. Coffee is tough in Holland, it seems difficult to order just a plain cup of drip coffee. We tried flat whites and americanos, but both were not quite right. Flat Whites have too much foam. Oh well, first world problems. Food was served quickly and was tasty, good scrambled eggs and lots of bread (not uncommon in Holland).

Everything about this place was great!…read more I'll start with the service. We walked in around 4:10 and they didn't start food service for another 20 minutes. The waiter was super cool and told us to have a seat anywhere we liked and brought us a drink menu. He knew we wanted to eat so at exactly 4:30 he came and took our orders. Through out the meal he was on top of everything and even offered many suggestions! The food was spectacular as well. I had the trio of fries and my friends had other small plates that were all so good! And the sauces that come with the fries, mamma mia! We also shared the Boca's Platter and it was absolutely to die for. Do not pass this up. I repeat, do not pass this up! Between 4 people, the medium was plenty of food. The space itself was also nice. They had outdoor seating for nicer days. We went right when food service began on a Monday afternoon so can't speak to how busy it gets during peak hours. Go for the great service, go for the Boca Platter, whatever you do, just go!

The bruschetta was delicious and if you love blue cheese, get it...it's extremely rich and creamy. The three kinds of fries were solid; curly, sweet potato, and regular with some chili ketchups. The boca platter was HUGE and we got the medium for 4 people. Came with steak, fried shrimp, mackerel potato salad, crostini, and an assortment of cheeses and some pepperoni. Last but not least...my favorite...the tartare. The quail egg was delicately placed atop the center of the meat and placed alongside the four little crostini on the plate. It was juicy and had so much flavor, a little spicy but not an overwhelming amount of chili spice. This meal reminded me of tapas in Madrid; definitely stop by bocas and get everything!

Coffee & Coconuts, seriously another amazing cafe that I visited during my trip in Amsterdam!…read more This cafe is hidden on the outside, but once you step inside, it is massively huge with three stories of dining tables. After waiting to be seated, our hostess guided us upstairs to the third floor, where they have several more dining tables and cozy couches that you can sit on while you enjoy your coffee. My parents, having visited this cafe before during their last trip to Amsterdam, raved about this place and suggested that I try their famous coconut coffee. All three of us ordered their coconut coffee, with my dad adding an espresso shot to his own so that he could stay awake for the rest of the night. Once I reached that first sip, OMG. SO DELICIOUS. How can I make my own coconut coffee back at home?! I loved it so much that I really want to make a copycat of it. The straws are also bendable, which really makes it handy if you need to lower your straw a bit. If I could, I would get on a plane to Amsterdam just to come back for their coconut coffee. That's how delicious it is! Local or tourist, I strongly suggest Coffee & Coconuts. You will not regret coming here at all!
