AMAZING!! I'm so happy I found this place, we ended up coming back twice! This little place is small on the inside, but they do have an upstairs as well. The windows are lined with fresh pastries and baked goods. Delish!! They have a tiny patio with 3 tables that is right over the canal! We came for a quick snack. There was no line when we arrived. We had the apple pie, juice and Lemonade. The apple pie was so tall but the crust was a little dry for my liking. There was a lot of apples in it and good to try if youve never had Netherlands apple pies before. The juices were not too sweet but they were definitely on the smaller side. The prices were not bad and the service is pretty fast. There's a small outdoor deck and there was another floor outside. The toilet is upstairs on the top floor. Exquisite! We stopped by after a morning walking tour. Our guide had casually mentioned it was her favorite. We stayed for lunch, which was delightful--quiche and and chicken on brown bread. Both were excellent. It's the largest quiche serving size I've ever seen and it was creamy and delicious. We were too full for desert, sadly. Cutest location and interior, uses the smal space very well! You can't even tell there's an upstairs until they direct you up the tiny pink staircase into a cozy indoor seating area that reminds you of your favorite grandmothers dining room. Pastries are beautiful and delicious, sandwiches are filling and equally delicious, and the coffee is strong. I was walking around Amsterdam and was came to this cute little place because of the smell. I wasn't in search of a treat but it smelt so good it felt wrong to pass up an opportunity to eat here. I walked in and asked the lady working at the counter what her favorite dessert was and she gave me three options and I told her to pick out of the 3. She ended up giving me a carrot cake and when I say this was perfect. Wow! It was moist, full of flavor, sweet but not too overpowering. Probably the best carrot cake I've ever had. What a gem of a place! Very friendly and accommodating staff and delicious food. We had the apple pie and strawberry cheesecake and both were great! We got there and the restaurant had no seats so they set up a table next to their kitchen for us to have tea, going above and beyond. This is a fabulous spot for cake and coffee ! But equally as fabulous for a breakfast platter of breads and cheeses, yogurt and fruit etc... and also equally as fabulous for a bite of homemade quiche for lunch. There were a couple of not so fabulous points too. One was that they open late for tourist standards. We ate breakfast there every day but one. We had a tour scheduled and at 8:23, they were still setting up. We thought maybe they opened at 8:30 but they didn't even acknowledge people standing at the door. One person even knocked and was ignored. They are very friendly when they are open , but I found this unnecessarily rude. They could have told people quickly what time they would be open since it wasn't posted on their door. By the way , it wasn't 8:30. It was 9:00. If you have a tour or some other reason to eat earlier , try Lexie down the street. This was one reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5. Another is the oddity of serving hot drinks in glasses. Hot hot tea in a glass makes it impossible to pick up. You either had to wait until it cooled or you had to pick up the glass with a napkin. All the hot drinks were served like this. Also , the place could use a little sprucing up- chairs were ripped, curtains frayed , bathroom had dead dried flowers and some unused and dusty lamps and other strange items. The seating downstairs is cramped and minimal , but up their very narrow staircase is a whole second floor with larger and more comfortable tables. They have lots of homemade things. The strawberry rhubarb crumble was outstanding ! It was hard to choose among all the goodies. I also recommend their scone with housemate lemon curd and the goat cheese quiche. There are so many things to like here , I would recommend it - but I do hope they will focus on the smaller things too - it makes a difference to the overall experience. read more

Drool factor I walked past a few times during the day but when I stopped back for an evening treat they were closed. I arranged my last days so I could stop in to sample and grab some goodies for my family back home. I truly wanted one of everything in the window. After ordering my goodies the server said it looked like I needed something else. So I grabbed a slice of French toast for Now. They must soak the bread overnight as it was eggy throughout. The crispy outside lets you break it apart for dipping if that's your thing. I got the carrot cake and the layers were phenomenal. The bottom had raisins and the cream top is to die for. read more

Amazing and unexpected gem in the middle of heart of Amsterdam. I've been to this magical city many times to know by now how everything about it is unexpected. However, we were pacing the streets early in the morning on Sunday trying to find a decent place to have breakfast. Couldn't find much, and before we gave up hope, this wonderful coffee house popped up. Inside it looks unique and picturesque. But it's when you ask to be seated outside, that's where you get this amazing and almost intimate scenery of the canal. Everything we ordered, which I believe was apple pie and chocolate croissant was very tasty. The coffee was good. I definitely recommend this place. read more

IN LOVE with the ambiance of this place! We were drawn in by the mouth-watering window display. They had such a variety of pastries and quiches. So many choices, even for vegetarians! What really caught my eye was the Mushrooms with Hazelnut Pesto, hook - line - and sinker. You order up front and take a seat and they deliver your order to you. The quiche was so BOMB, omgoodness! It filled me up too - once slice and done! It could get quite busy as it is centrally located and foot traffic is high. OMGoodness, the inside is literally, LIFE! They had cute tables set up against the wall as well as near the cashier. The walls were lined with old piano sheets - such a great rustic ambiance. Each table had cute tea cups that had sugar cubes in it (both white and brown sugar) When they gave us our quiches, they gave us these biodegradable forks and knives - I loved that! I asked for water and they had mint-infused water in a bottle. Towards the back of the shop - you can watch as the bakers make more baked goods, FRESH! This is one of those places that is kind of hard to rate because there's so many selections you would need to come a couple of times to give it a true rating. There's a big selection of savory & sweet items. Obviously, some better than others. It's very charming inside, but cramped because it's so busy all the time , and FYI.. they do not have restrooms. We ordered the zucchini lemon curd cake, choco vanilla bread, Portobello Mushroom w/Bacon Pie, and Goat Cheese Quiche w/Leeks. The pastry items were not overly sweet, more like items you would find in an organic style coffeeshop where the pastries taste more like Whole food lightly sweetened pastries if that makes sense. The zucchini lemon curd cake had an amazing topping, but the zucchini cake part was just A ok. It wasn't as flavorful, kinda bland to be honest and not super moist. Even though I was getting a zucchini type cake I was still expecting it to be like a carrot cake type of thing. For example it's like bread w/jelly.. the jelly is sweet but the breads is not. They should really improve that because it would be the absolute bomb if so. It was good and enjoyed, but didn't have that Wow Factor because of this. Same w/the Choco Vanilla Bread. Very good but w/hints of chocolate. Dense Cacao flavored bread w/the chocolate frosting being more of where the sweet chocolate was coming from. Savory items like quiche were great. These items take about 10 min of reheating in the oven if you want them hot. We passed by this place 3 days in a row and they were so full we couldn't get in so they're obviously doing something right. It's an adorable place and I'd be interested to try more items. Everything was fresh. As a matter of fact, they're baking in there constantly because of the big crowds. I actually sat in the back right by the baking area and watched which I really liked. They also have a little outdoor patio area in the back overlooking the canal. It's very tiny though. Probably fits about 4 people. They also have sandwiches here with freshly made bread. I wanted to try the sweet bread pudding. It looked very interesting and caught everyone's attention in the streets. People would stop to take photos in the window display, including myself. There's just so many other items I wanted to try. The pumpkin pie, apple pie, brownies, French toast :-D I could go on. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to visit again. We chanced upon this place on our first day exploring Amsterdam and their baked-goods window display drew us in instantly. The stacks of quiche in the window are too good to resist and thank goodness we didn't! We walked right in and requested 2 slices of quiche - goat cheese & leek and mushroom & comté - and they asked if we wanted them hot (we said yes). They requested us wait outside since it was a very tight spot. There's only a handful of tables and to retreat through the door with our packs was quite a feat - but we successfully joined the handful of folks waiting outside too. They brought our slices out after 5min - as promised - and even included wooden forks for us. Hopefully you don't plan on taking your sweets very far, because they don't really package their desserts to go. The girl behind the counter asked me if I planned to eat there or take it to go, and I went with the latter as there was no seating at that time. She proceeded to hand me the piece of cake on the same flimsy paper plate that the dine in customers had. The lemon curd was SO GOOD. I ended up buying a mason jar of it to take home for 5.50 euro. Sure beats trying to make it myself. The zucchini cake itself was not my cup of tea. I was expecting more of a zucchini bread / carrot cake baked good. Their take on it is more of a cake with chunks of zucchini in it. It was also a little on the dry side, though I did visit a little later in the afternoon. This place is super small and popular so seating is often scares! Why is this place great? A lot of people say that they have the best sandwiches in Amsterdam but you and I both know that Boer Geert has the best sandwiches and if you didn't know that, get with the program! Are the sandwiches good here? Definitely! They are delicious! I love their smoked mackerel with lemongrass mayo sandwich. It's also a bakery, so choose your own bread! What I particularly like about this place is that they have lots of stuff that's not very common in Holland and you also wouldn't be able to find them easily anywhere else, like polenta cake! They have sweet pies and cakes from chocolate mud pies to cheesecakes. They also have lots of savory pies and cakes such as quiches and polenta cakes! In a city where you can never be quite sure what you're getting when you order a brownie, this little bakery/ coffeeshop is a breath of fresh air. In contrast to the busy streets, the ambiance in DLK was calm and relaxing. Take your time ordering--there are sweets and quiches at the storefront window, sandwiches on the chalkboard menu, and croissants and scones by the artsy counter made of crates and decorated with tea cups and mason jars. I had the lemon poppyseed scone with lemon curd, and a coffee. You can choose from a sampling of jams laid out on the counter, which is then scooped onto a small paper cup. The scone was pretty good on its own, one of those misshapen ones that look really homemade. The scone was REALLY good with the lemon curd, the remainder of which I discretely scraped out my cup long after the scone was gone. I usually prefer proper mugs and plates over paper ones. But the paper plate, paper cup, and disposable knife at DLK worked for some reason. Almost as if it was showing that good, fresh food was the most natural thing in the world, not something that needs fancy fanfare. Seating is limited, with about two tables in the back, and three little shelves jutting from the wall to serve as tables. You can take out, but I'd suggest you sit down even for a few minutes for a relaxing break before you plunge back into the chaotic streets of Amsterdam. read more

So many pastries, so little time. What a great find this place was! Walked past it on the way to the Mexican restaurant next door and was just drawn in by the food art in the window. So much so, that I went back to visit for breakfast the next morning. I call it food art because the food looks so delicious in the window you would swear you were looking at an art gallery. On the right side of the nicest jewelry shop in the heart of Amsterdam, Lyppens ( see our header 'lifestyle' ), you will find the delicious bakery, breakfast and lunch place . The counter is made of construction pallets and the stools of wooden crates. Everything is homemade and therefore fresh. The carrot cake and zucchini pie with lemon curd are a true treat. On sunny days they have the cutest terrace above the water. If you want to be sure of a place to sit for lunch, you better make sure to be there before 11.30 am! TL;DR - Possibly the best cakes in Amsterdam, but not enough seating! Craving something sweet we happened to walk past this place and had to stop to admire the huge range of incredible looking sweet treats on display. There's all sorts here - I'd probably recommend making your decision from the window before going in to order because I couldn't see a full list of everything inside. Staff were super friendly and helpful (I've seen a review saying otherwise, but cannot reconcile that with our own experience!). We went for apple cake and got absolutely huge slices of a dessert which was truly amazing (plus a little cream on the side and we also ordered a cup of tea). We ended up sat at the back of the shop where you're right next to the staff making things - the bread maker was going and you could see all the different dishes in the oven. Fantastic stuff. The only reason I've not given the place 5 stars is that there just isn't enough seating, and in an attempt to fit more in some of the tables are very small indeed. If the weather was nice you could get things to takeaway, but we visited on a very cold day in February. The shortage of seats tells you one thing though - the desserts are sooooo good! It's a pleasant little bakery-meet--sandwich shop apparently ran by a French chef. The inside cozy and simply decorated which results in a nice feel. Walking aimlessly around Amsterdam the current of the crowd eased me up to a plate glass window of happy happy and at least a couple of joys. I have undervalued french desserts in the past. Historically speaking there are those more wrong on more important subjects, however, I stand among their number ashamed and properly penitent. The carrot cake was truly amazing and the apple pie I carried for kilometers to find the proper scenery to share it with. And do not order anything you might want hot or heated, or in need of preparation. It's a pretty place but you will wait for 20 min or more for them to heat up a single piece of quiche. Then when you tell them it's still cold, they explain the oven isn't hot? So you send it back and it still, comes back cold. After 20-30 min you start to think this piece of quiche will cost you an afternoon in Amsterdam, and you just leave. When they ask why you are leaving and you tell them your food is still cold - the rude, rather aloof girl who obviously owns not 1% of the business, says.....'goodbye'. So you laugh, walk out with their cold, shit quiche uneaten and simply walk across the street to any one of the thousands of great bakeshops that litter Amsterdam. So....goodbye.
