Old School Cantonese food in the heart of Montreal's Chinatown. It's been a while since I've had complimentary pork bone and vegetable soup and seen white plastic sheeted table tops for easy cleanup. LOL. Portions are family style so bring a group with you to share. Salt and Pepper Pork Chop - easily the best dish, great crunch and great flavor. Snow peas sautéed with Garlic was clean, fresh and crunchy. Garlic flavor wasn't overly done. Beef Stew over Baby Bok Choy was tender and beefy. The Baby Bok Choy was hidden underneath in my picture, but it was there. There was also beef tendons as well which I always enjoy. Salt and Pepper Squid was a huge portion and similar to Pork, very crunchy. This was a huge portion. Got seated right away in a packed restaurant on a Friday evening. Keung Kee could be anywhere from 3-5 stars depending on what you like and what you expect, lets just get that out of the way. I was expecting a more flavored experience and maybe that is not what they do or I could have ordered differently. The menu is huge so it is hard to know where to start. We went here because of the good Yelp reviews. Were we arrived in Chinatown there were many other places that looked great, so we loitered at the door for a minute while deciding what to do. As we loitered a family came out and noticed us and asked if were were going to Keung Kee. We said we were thinking about it and they said just go, it is the best restaurant in Chinatown. Sold. We went in, up the stairs, waited a bit, and got a table. This is the kid of place you need to bring a lot of people because that is whet it is built for, the menu is extensive, and the portions are huge. We puzzled over the menu then ordered our food. We wanted a bottle of cold sake and the waiter brought it in an ice bucket. Nice. We started with the pork dumplings. The dumplings were very goof but came in a hot thick sweet peanut sauce. With a lighter sauce these would have been outstanding. The scallop was huge and had a bunch of stuff on it. There was some good scallop flavor but it was masked with all the stuff that tasted like old oil. The noodle dish was good but also had some old oil flavor coming from somewhere. All the meats and vegetables were nice and fresh but the good sauce I think was the source of the oil. We saw a table next to us had the pork chops and was asked, what are those? So we got that too. The chops were thin bone in with a batter fried then soaked in a vinegar sauce. These would have been good as our only item with a bowl of rice. Our co-eaters there had many good looking things. Quintessential Cantonese style restaurant . After a long day at a convention, we found ourselves hungry and looking to see what's available. Luckily, Keung Kee was open till midnight. We got there right before closing, and was probably the last table that they were going to serve. So if they seemed a little bit upset, I can understand that. What we ordered: Chicken fried rice $13.95 Minced beef congee $7.95 As prices go it's pretty cheap and reasonable!! Find a good fried rice with the "wok hay" for under $14 here on the West Coast is hard to find. Plus by the end of the night we were stuffed. The congee was nice, thick and comforting. They have AC, which great in that hot Montreal summer. Unfortunately they're located upstairs and I don't recall seeing any elevators. This is a nice hidden Hong Kong style Chinese place in Chinatown. Black pepper beef- the gave nice thick pieces of beef that had some heat which I appreciated. The beef was a bit chewy though. Fried fish filet- they used way too much batter here and could have been crispier. The fish they used was good but could have used more salt/pepper/jalapeño seasoning. Absolutely delicious. I feel like it's authentic as it can get. Service was quick and food came out nice and hot. The salt and pepper pork chops were soooooo delicious. It had the perfect seasoning. I asked for a pan fried noodle thinking it was those crispy noodles and I got more of a chow fun. It's fine cause it was still super good. We came around 4:30 pm. Authentic Chinese food. It's almost like a hole in the wall place. I almost mistaken this place as the cafe on the first floor but you actually need to walk upstairs to get to the restaurant. My friends and I ordered sesame beef, stir fry vegetables and wonton noodle soup. - sesame beef: taste like it was first fried then stir fry with a sauce similar to orange chicken and sprinkled with sesame on top. It actually tasted like an enhanced version of Mongolian beef from Panda Express without the greasiness - garlic stir fry veggie: strong garlic flavor, vegetables not overall cooked, not salty or greasy -wonton noodle soup: the wonton is acceptable. Although my favorite wonton noodle place normally has wonton bigger than the size of a fish ball. I read on Yelp this spot was a go to if you want authentic Cantonese food. I loved this spot! First off, know this is family style restaurant so any dish you order will be larger portions as they're meant to be shared with friends and family. I love these types of restaurants as it only enhances the atmosphere dining with friends while sharing food! The restaurant is tucked away, there's a door and some stairs to go up to get here. The food? Absolutely delicious! My favorite was the Singapore noodles and then the duck! Both dishes were super delicious and plenty of food for both my girlfriend and I. Definitely recommend these two dishes. 10/10 The kung pao chicken was also very good, but I didn't expect so many peanuts. Perhaps the original dish has this many nuts, however I'm typically accustomed to more meat and less nuts, but overall I loved this dish was well! The vegetables were cooked perfectly and I loved how large the pieces were. 8/10 The vegetables and Chinese mushroom were okay. At first when I read the menu and it states vegetables so I thought there would be more than just bok choy. however, the dish pairs nicely with the other meatier dishes we ordered. 7/10 Overall the atmosphere isn't anything special. The tables and furniture do looking a little worn down, but the dishes and family style more than makes up for the interior designs of the restaurant. This restaurant is located in the pedestrian section of the rue de la Gauchetiere in Chinatown Montreal. You have to climb steep stairs to get up and the dining room is kind of small...about 6-8 tables of 10 and a few smaller tables. I had a craving for a Young Chow Fried rice so that's what I got...I spoke with the waiter in Chinese, so maybe that's why I was treated like a local, kind of abrupt and rushed... The rug in the dining room and stairs is a bit run down, but the food was good...I asked for the dish to be made lighter and with less sodium...it was very much to my liking. I loved Keung Kee, an unadorned walk-up in Chinatown. We were the only Gweilo in the restaurant, guaranteeing authenticity. Don't expect fancy, but Keung Kee had AC, a pleasure in 94 degree weather. My shrimp in lobster sauce, around $17, was out of this world delicious. Singapore noodles was average according to my spouse, but Keung Kee is known for its seafood. Pleasantly surprised to find such good and authentic Cantonese food in Montreal. The way they prepared their seafood was as good as the good restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. Their seafood was really fresh and of high quality. We saw pictures of some seafood dishes on the wall and decided to splurge and order more than the two of us could eat for lunch. We did end up taking home another meal! We had: poached surf clam, steamed razor clams with garlic, two scallops steamed with garlic and Chinese vermicelli, sautéed pea shoots with garlic, Singapore style rice noodles, beef chow fun, and wonton noodle soup. We were so hungry we finished the giant surf clam and razor clams and one of the scallops before I remembered to take pictures! I took pictures of the pictures on the wall for the two missing dishes because they did look very much alike. I have never seen surf clam and scallops that big in California. The scallops had diameter of about 2 inches (5 cm)! They were all fresh and delicious and perfectly cooked! The beef chow fun, Singapore style rice noodles, and sautéed pea shoots were all very good. The Cantonese style wonton noodle soup was my least favorite; the shrimps they used were very fresh but overall it lacked the authentic wonton flavor. That was kind of expected because it's normally never found in restaurants that don't specialize in wonton noodle soup. Staff was very friendly and polite (maybe because I spoke Cantonese). The restaurant is not a nice and classy place. But for the price and food quality, I think it provides excellent value. I'm a sucker for authentic Cantonese cuisine, and Keung Kee provided a taste of home and more. The menu, as you might expect from a bustling restaurant in any major city's Chinatown, was extensive - we had a hard time narrowing down to just 3 dishes due to the small size of our party. Ultimately we went with the seafood noodle, fried fish, and the well-loved scallops (a favorite on Yelp!). I guess you could say we were in a seafood mood, and our choices did not disappoint. Everything was fresh and flavorful, and the scallops were a standout. The restaurant can be a little hard to find since it's on the second floor of an old-looking building, but once we stepped in we knew we were going to leave happy. This is authentic Chinese restaurant on the second floor in Chinatown. There are so many options in Chinatown that overwhelming where to go. Some of the places that Yelp recommends were long lines and way too crowded. Sometimes it is hype for Asian food. We saw this place and thought we would try a dish and if we did not like it, we could leave. Ambiance: Old and very rustic Food: We were brought green tea. We order Singapore noodles. The noodles were super temperature hot and very delicious. So we ordered another dish. It was mushrooms, bak choy, and bamboo shoots in a brown sauce. The dish again was very temperature hot that I burned my mouth on the bamboo shoots. The brown sauce was very salty and not flavorful. The shitake mushrooms were rehydrated mushrooms. The bak choy was very fresh and crispy. I ate only the bamboo shoots. The dish really needed rice, so we ordered fried rice to eat with the veggies. The fried rice was super temperature hot and I love the fried rice. It was just perfect. After the mushroom in brown sauce cooled down did it taste better. Service: ok, they are not used to people ordering in waves. Not very friendly and not use to people asking for recommendations. But when you order, you don't have to wait long, the food comes out very quickly. Cleanliness: average Bathroom cleanliness: The bathroom is buried in the side of the restaurant. The hallway is long and dungeon like. The bathroom was being gross. The stales are very short and I had to keep the door open to use the bathroom. I am 5'8" and my knees were beyond the door sitting. You have to be 5' or less to be able to close the door. Comment: what I did notice is that once people started to come in, they were ordering hot pot and seafood. I wish the restaurant staff would have spoken up to say... good choice, but our specialty is... maybe you want to try that. I would have done that. Solid Cantonese in Chinatown that is no frills with the standard fare. The shrimp wonton noodle soup was solid but heads up that the wontons are shrimp only without any pork. The rice plates are solid with good portions - our beef with vegetables was filled with tender slices of beef and Chinese greens. The tofu and seafood hot pot was solid but the calamari was too tough and chewy for my liking. Overall it's not a bad option for traditional Cantonese and the prices are solid. STOP!!!!!!!! DO NOT DINE HERE!!! Here is why, we were in town for F1, my adult kid wanted Chinese food and picked this place so we went. Upon arrival they turned down a bug family in front of us that was very unhappy about it. Now we know why. It was packed, and I don't think they were prepared for all the people visiting this city. They service was freaking terrible, they seated us fast. I never felt so rushed to order food. They almost ruined my phone. I left to use the bathroom as did my husband. And the waiter spilled hot tea on my phone that I left on the table. And didn't say a damn word to me about it when I came back to the table. My kids were pissed and told me what happened. We never saw that waiter again, he instead joined some other table and drank the rest of the night away with friends. I was pissed and wanted to leave but we were hungry. They delivered every dish without any white rice......... we ordered both white rice and shrimp fried rice. What do you think came last??? Our shrimp fried rice and they forgot the white rice. Do you know who brought the food out after the waiter left us? The cook did and he seemed to take that out on us, when he brought the food he stomped like a 5 year old kid and didn't say anything to us either. I tried to wait for the white rice that never came with my dish but I was hungry and didn't want my food to get cold. Then when we were all done eating our main dishes, the shrimp fried rice arrives. My husband had to flag down the cook as he tried to hurry and leave the table and say hey take this back we are done eating and never got our rice. He did apologize not that it was his fault. So he said he need to pay and when he brought the check, I said not to leave the tip for the waiter that deserted us. The cook got mad and grabbed all the fortune cookies off the table and had a tantrum. So then our kids get even more pissed off with the situation and yell at the cook on the way out that his attitude and the service sucks here and wanted to track down the waiter that left us and almost ruined my phone. It really wasn't the cooks fault, he was just as pissed at the waiter that we were. The waiter should have received all the blame for this and what he caused. My friends wanted to go to Chinatown for some Chinese/Cantonese food and they had picked Keung Kee as the place to go to as according to my friend from Hong Kong, she mentioned that this is "the most authentic Hong Kong Cantonese restaurant". As I didn't have to work, I arrived in Chinatown before my friends and opened the outside door to Keung Kee and went up the stairs to get to the restaurant itself. I looked for my friends but they weren't there and the waiter said something to me in Cantonese but I didn't catch it (also, my Cantonese is rusty). I informed him in Cantonese that I was waiting for friends. He then asked me how many people in Cantonese and I told him three. He then told me that I could sit and wait for them. I've never been to Hong Kong before so I can't attest to whether it is authentic or not. I do know what I like in terms of Cantonese dishes so I opted for the standard things that I normally get in Cantonese restaurants (which is salt & pepper pork chops and Cantonese Chow Mein). We ordered both of these dishes along with some other items (some type of vegetable dish which I didn't try, a stir fried stuffed tofu dish, and some steamed rice). Service was fast. The salt & pepper pork chops were not the best that I've had in Montreal's Chinatown. It wasn't bad but I've had better. The Cantonese Chow Mein was good and comparable to other places in Montreal's Chinatown that I've had Cantonese Chow Mein. One of the mainstays in Chinatown and for good reason. If you're looking for great reasonably priced Cantonese food, this is the place! They've got an expansive menu, swift if curt service, and reasonable prices. Best thing is to go with a big group since you'll be dining family style - sharing is caring after all. They do 'sort of' take reservations, though really it's still sort of a first come first serve kind of deal (things get very busy!). If you have a big group you'll get the classic round table with the lazy susan. We ordered a ton of dishes - seafood, poultry, beef, soup - the works! Everything was absolutely delicious. They have all the good classics like the chowmein and sizzling beef and salt and pepper squid, but also some more 'unusual' dishes - I ordered the pork intestine with green peppers - not everyone's cup of tea admittedly, but one of my favourite dishes, and it was delicious! On the winters night on Sunday, I decided to be lazy and order skip the dishes the first time ever. It still cost less than order room service and I will get to try one more Chinese restaurant. The whole transaction was smooth. It only took 30 minutes from order online to arrival. Since I have the interview the next morning, I ordered the basics: fried rice and steam veggie. The steam veggie is not on the online menu, so I just type in the comment and they get what I want. The online menu just say seasoned veggie so I am in for a surprise. Boy I was surprised! They put in the extra sweet say sauce (the good one for fish) in a container and no normal human can take just boiled tasteless veggies ( unless you have been eating fake Chinese food for years and a small town in the southern states like me). That is nice. Problem were: the soy sauce flipped and spill all over. Also the mere were no utensils. Since I were in the hotel I resort to eat with the coffee stirrers. Despite the great effort spent to clean up and eat, the food taste great! It is comparable to any Asian restaurants on big cities like Hong Kong or Toronto. We've been here a couple times during our escapades to Montreal, and I swear the quality deteriorates with every visit. We were choosing between the Lanzhou hand pulled noodles around the corner and this shop, and I do regret that we ultimately selected Keung Kee. Since the prices are quite steep, we opted for the set meals. The soup came out first, and the clear broth with the essence of the fatty pork meat and bone really hit the spot. The other dishes eventually came out one by one, and we were also given a huge portion of rice served in a bowl on the side. Salted Chicken (steamed): This chicken was okay. It wasn't particularly smooth not moist; on the contrary, I found it slightly dry but also oily at the same time. Some parts were undoubtedly better marinated than the others, as I had a couple pieces practically unseasoned. Stir Fried Beef and Bok Choy: This was the only vegetable dish of the night, and it was pitiful. The entire thing was doused in oil and unbelievably greasy. It was evident that they used a lot of oil and cornstarch to make the sauce , and just poured the mess over some bok choy pieces. Sweet and Sour Pork: This was also very bad. The pieces of pork were heavily drenched in a thick batter, so every piece and bite was essentially 80% flour. I also tried two pieces of pineapple, and had to spit it out each time. There was a strong stench associated with it, and it was evident that the fruit simply just wasn't fresh. Steamed Fish with Ginger and Scallions: This dish was a bit more palatable, with five large filets of halibut fish steamed.
