Pretty solid supermarket in the Whitestone area. Sadly Waldbaums closed a few years back so this was the only one in the area until North Shore Farms opened up. They expanded a few years back, and they really put a ton of money into their renovations. Years ago, it realllllllly showed its age, now it looks like a much more modern supermarket. It is still a bit smaller than most supermarkets, but they pack everything in into a smaller footprint. There used to be a weird smell in the building years ago, but ever since the renovation, it seems to be gone. Prices aren't too bad, its comparable to other supermarkets in the area. They also have a very nice floral shop inside. It is right next to the other important area, the Beer haha! All in all a nice supermarket, plenty of parking in the front and back of the store. Friendly enough staff. No major complaints. If you are close by, its a good choice. read more

It's honestly shocking that this place is able to make rent. As soon as you walk in there's a gust of foul odor that may indicate a store wide plumbing issue. That is enough to make me not want to buy food there. This definitely needs to be looked into. read more

This was my first visit since I moved 10 years ago. Key Food has been around all my life in the same spot, in this same shopping center. I only remember tone upgrade that was about a decade ago. A unique aspect of this store is there are two exits/entrances. I have used them so many times when walking in the area to cut through. The reason I decided to visit was because my father informed me that they carry some Czech beers and I have been unable to locate these. I went late, maybe around 10pm. It was totally dead in the store so this was a good time to go. I browsed the store for any deals or to discover any unique or difficult items to find. I located the beers I was looking for and picked up some miscellaneous items. They have a large selection of items and many aisles to explore. The layout is very different from when I last shopped here but it also looks cleaner. I went another time a little earlier in the night and there were some very strange customers shopping. Like in my personal space kinda weird lol. The staff also seemed off and all had angry looks on their faces. Overall, I will definitely shop here for those Czech beers and for any good sales. The store I love to hate. Last trip there had only one checkout counter with a live person, who as usual did not bother to ask if she could help pack my large shopping bag. Fortunately, the one person watching the self checkout area offered to help me check out. (I have a masters degree from college, but still can't quite figure out how to do the self checkout comfortably. My problem, of course, not theirs.) An average neighborhood supermarket with an above average deli section and meat department. Unfortunately you will need to bring your bank book with you while shopping here. I can only give it two stars because of the prices. Just a short drive away is a Shop Rite with much better pricing. For example, this week Key Food has 2L bottle of Pepsi "on sale at 3/$7 while Shop Rite has 2L bottle of Pepsi at 5/$6........2 more bottles for $1 less!!! Also this week, key food has 1 gallon of store brand vegetable oil for $9.99 while Shop Rite has 1 gallon of Wesson vegetable oil for 7.99. These are just one of many examples. If you are shopping for a full load of groceries, these differences will become very significant!. read more

It's a key food. A supermarket. But I do think this particular location is better run than most of other chain supermarkets. The shelves look neater, the beer section is especially large, the seafood counter is nice and big and fresh looking, and there are two exits/entrances. So, you can park on either end of the place. Very expensive. Their gallon of milk is $5.49 and Shop Rite has it for $3.69, quite a difference. The floors have dirty black spots throughout especially along the dairy cases. I'm sure with a little effort they can be cleaned. Whenever I go in there are not many shoppers. I wonder why! read more

They have not had the fruit juice I always buy for a while now. Yesterday I had no luck finding it either but I asked this wonderful guy in the Produce section about it. He enthusiastically said he thought it was stored in the back but the employee who normally puts deliveries out was not in today. " I will go back and get it for you - how many you want? " he said. The deli counter here is the slowest ever!! I came in looking to get some turkey. Had 3 people in front of me and 3 people working behind the counter, you would think should be quick. No such luck. It took over 15 minutes not because the people in front of me ordered a million items, it was because the workers are busy yapping with each other. When it was finally my turn, I asked for 1/2 lb of turkey. The guy who was helping me could not stop talking with his co-workers. They were talking about how busy it was, but instead of shutting up and focusing on what they are doing, they went on joking around and talking. The guy takes the turkey he already sliced for me, weights it (I see its over 1/2 lb already) and turns around. I thought he was bagging it up, but no he continues slicing. I say, I only wanted 1/2 lb but of course he can't hear me because they are still talking. The older gentleman next had to yell for me to get his attention. I understand a little bantering between co-workers to make the time go by but this was ridiculous. Save yourself some time and go to Raspberry farms which is 1.5 blocks away or if you have a car, go to ShopRite on 20th Avenue! read more

I've never noticed this Key Food location before and we drove into this lot by accident. We saw the Key food sign and parked right in front of it, but we stopped after we got out of the car, because this Key Food has no windows, and it took us a little to spot its tiny entrance. Don't let its lack of windows nor the tiny entrance fool you, this Key Food is HUGE!! It has wide aisles that are stocked with various popular and rare brands, even organic ones! We actually found coconut oil cooking spray here! There is also a wide selection of fresh produce, meats, seafood, salad, and cooked food. Its employees are super friendly and helpful. I am so ashamed of my local supermarket. The produce section is the worst! If I shop here, then I have to go to our local farm market as well. Every time I walk through the produce area I find something rotten or with mold. It is ALWAYS right on top! Clearly visible! Doesn't anybody work in this area and check the fruits and vegetables?! I usually order from Pea Pod or Fresh Direct. Both better than this store. Went yesterday for a few items and as other people reported the smell can knock you out. But that was the good part of my visit there. Pound of vegetable salad from Deli counter was sour and got thrown out. I should have known not to buy from their Sushi section but saw some sea weed salad on a small container and figured what could they do to that. Found a slimy worm in it. Couldn't eat for the rest of the day and still feel sick over it. I obviously will never go back. read more

This Key Food is a ripoff!!! Every time we shop the on-sale items they ring them up wrong. Yesterday I bought Bounty on sale 8=20 on sale for 10.99. When I got home looked at the receipt and was charged 27.99!!! Today my husband went back with the receipt to get credited and was told wrong printing on circular !!! The store is supposed to honor wrong prices, this happened once too much in this DIRTY HORRIBLE KEY FOOD!!! Will NEVER shop there. First, the good. Their pasta aisle is fabulous. They have the best pasta selection that I've ever seen in a supermarket. They also have Pomi tomatoes, regular or organic, so that makes me happy. I go there just for the pasta aisle. Now for the bad.....the fish dept. We tried two types of stuffed fish, and while the stuffing was delicious, the fish was obviously not fresh. KF uses old fish for their stuffed rolls. We were so disappointed. And it's true what another reviewer said about the entrance. It's a bit hard to spot. So go for the pasta, but steer clear of the fish. read more

This is my local supermarket and it is tragic how poorly it is maintained. Many times I have found the produce to be wilted and or molded-so check before you buy. I have also found cheeses to be expired. Another frustrating thing is that they will have an item you buy but when you go back they don't have it again. Their meat is expensive and not really a great selection. The deli department is sloppy with salad spillage and they use the same slicer to cut both meat and cheese. Overall this market leaves me disappointed. It's very expensive for the amount of groceries you settle for and walk away with. Finally, the key food card never reaps any savings. I now go a bit further to Waldbaums where they are not an exemplar market but certainly better than this Key Food. read more

I do not usually shop at this supermarket. However, if i am in the area i will pick up cold cuts and milk only. The deli counter is slow as molasses. Sometimes they have 2 clerks, sometimes they have 3. Either way they all work slow with no sense of urgency. I cannot believe nobody else notices it. I don't come here that often but it is located right by my boyfriend's house so we come here from time to time when we need some things. I don't know why but I always feel like there is a funny smell whenever I walk in. I always say it to my boyfriend and he always says you say that every time, well it's worth repeating! I don't know what the smell is but it's weird. They have a nice deli, meats and fresh seafood section with many options. They have a salad bar and soup bar which is a nice touch too. They have a wide selection of alcohol as well. They also sell different kinds of gift cards which has come in handy with me for gifts. They run sales and are usually are in stock of everything that we may need. I will still run here if I need something and I'm by my boyfriend's, weird smell and all. read more

If you wanted to look at my history of reviews, you will see that I'm not the type of person who hates a restaurant because a bus boy forgot to refill my water glass or the waiter brought me spinach instead of broccoli. Things happen and I'm always willing to overlook little things but it's now gotten to the point that I can no longer overlook the surly and downright rude attitude of most of the staff who works at this supermarket. The worst offender is the older guy behind the seafood counter. Asking if a certain fish is fresh, you would think I was asking him if he was wearing clean underwear. He takes it soooooo personally and responds defensively. The cashiers are quick but aren't very friendly and the girl who watches the self check out area is way too busy texting. I won't stop shopping here because they have a great selection and nice wide aisles but come on, it cost nothing to say "thank you" or smile or at the very least not want to take my head off if I ask if the flounder is fresh. If it was one or two people, I wouldn't think anything of it, but it seems 75% of the time I encounter this rudeness and this has been for years. Unfortunately, it's been my experience that bad attitudes start from the top and trickle on down. It's almost like being surly is the culture here. I hope someone who cares, reads this and instead of being defensive, takes what I've said here and takes action. They used to be small, dark and kind of dingy. Over the past two months they leased the old Marty's shoe store next door, expanded, remodeled and have seriously improved. They've increased their stock, cleaned up the store, increased their lighting, added self checkout lanes, added a new deli counter, updated their aisles. It's like a brand new store. It's great, love it, call me a fan. Definitely worth a look. read more

This store is disgusting. Every time I buy produce here, it is either rotten or goes bad within a day or two. I have brought back many items over the past few months- bunches of kale, cucumbers, cheeses, expired soda (over a year old!), raw chicken, and the list goes on and on... Besides this, there is a horrible, nauseating smell in this store from the moment you walk in. I don't know what is going on here, but I worked in this store over 20 years ago, in the deli department, and I remember the store always carrying very fresh items. I don't ever remember there being a smell in the store or having to return items because they were spoiled or expired. I used to just throw the items away when I got home and found they were no good, but now I bring them back to the store and get my money back. If you shop here, you need to inspect everything with a fine tooth comb (dates, etc). Unfortunately, it is the only supermarket in the neighborhood and I think this is the only reason they are still in business. I have started shopping at Shop Rite on 20th Avenue- what a difference!! That's what a real supermarket should look like. Produce is always very fresh and there is a nice selection and NO SMELL! Someone needs to do something about the management in this store ASAP. One of the better American supermarkets in the Queens area. They have many items in stock and although the prices are not as great as other supermarkets like Pathmark, they are very neat and organized. The fruits and veggies are usually very fresh. The deli department is very nice but there is usually a long wait 10-15 mins. They also have very fresh fish. read more

I went here on Tuesday night to get a few things. Never again. I have never in my life see such slow people working. I was at the deli counter for I kid you not like 30 minutes. When I got there, my number was 23 and the number was already on 20. How can it take that long? Ill tell you why, because the people behind the counter like to sit and chat with people who are already being helped by other workers. Then when I asked what I wanted, and told them to give me whichever was on sale, the guy who did my order took about another 15 minutes. By the time I got home I realized not only did they not give me what I ordered, they gave me the most expensive meat they had.
