As a filmmaker and photographer, I've documented a lot of different environments, but my experience with Key West Extreme Adventures was something special. This is a family-run business and you can feel that local, small-town pride from the moment you step on the boat. What impressed me most wasn't just the wildlife--though seeing bottle-nosed dolphins and sharks in their natural habitat was incredible--it was the professional camaraderie. Even though there are other tour companies out there, the captains are in constant communication, sharing sightings and even helping each other out with gear or debris in the water. It's rare to see that kind of collective stewardship in a competitive industry. The tour is also deeply educational. The guide did a fantastic job dispelling myths about sharks and explaining the biology of the animals (like the dermal denticles on their skin) with a level of respect that shows they aren't just using nature for a paycheck--they are actively protecting it. This tour was hands down the best thing we did during our trip to Key West -- and we packed in a lot! We did it toward the end of our stay, and the whole family agreed it was the highlight. Key West Extreme Adventures takes you out into the open ocean for an unforgettable 2-hour tour focused on shark and wildlife viewing. They use a special scent to attract sharks right up to the boat -- and it actually works! Our twins (they're 4) were totally mesmerized watching the yellow sharks feed just feet away. It was exciting, interactive, and surprisingly peaceful out on the water. The owner and staff were amazing with the kids -- super friendly, patient, and clearly passionate about what they do. Our daughter was a little disappointed not to see dolphins (you can't predict nature!), but she still absolutely loved the whole experience. Our son hasn't stopped talking about the sharks. We also spotted stingrays, turtles, and a bunch of sea birds. It felt like a totally unique way to experience the ocean -- nothing touristy or cookie-cutter about it. This was the absolute best thing we did while in Key West for 4 days!!!! The hospitality by the crew was above and beyond. They made sure that EVERY PERSON on board the pontoon type boat was able to get up close the sharks while the crew fed them. Awesome for families with children as they really took an interest in the kids having fun, as each one on board during our excursion was able to personally feed a shark. One thing to watch out for......don't fall thru the "TRAP DOOR".......dont worry it's an inside joke! We also saw dolphins on the way back in!!! read more

The Shark Tour was the highlight of our time in Key West! We saw tons of sharks, and enjoyed watching them chomp on bait fish! Then we watched a pod of dolphins play, and several of the dolphins jumped completely out of the water! Also saw a few other intetesting fish, including brightly colored fish near the docks. Took the family to see a shark feeding frenzy. A short trip out to the location and some tidbits along the way. Plenty of sharks to be seen. The captain and his son were very humorous. Not sure if this was part of the trip or not but, we even went to the "dolphins playground" to watch them do some tricks for us. That was pretty fun to see. Trip could be a little longer but it was VERY hot out anyway. Us New Englanders can't take that heat. This trip inspired me to watch Jaws (my favorite) on the plane home. Absolutely amazing experience! I can not say enough great things about this tour. The tour is held by a father and his two sons , who were all very pleasant. We were lucky to see sharks, dolphins and even a sea turtle! And when I say 'see' them, I mean , they were around the boat for a long time. Everyone in the boat had extensive closeup videos of these animals and were very happy. It was a plus that they provided various info /explanations about sharks through the tour too. All over, this is a very interesting tour for any age group. I always look for the smaller tours whether on land or sea and this boat hits the sweet spot for tour size. We only had about 10 folks on tour plus the 2 crew members Capt'n Clay and his first mate / Uncle Dave. These guys have been boating in these Key West waters for decades and it shows. They are incredibly knowledgeable and super friendly. In fact these are the kind of folks you wanna go have a meal after the eco-tour and continue the convo because they are a wealth of knowledge. While you can never be guaranteed to see wildlife, these guys know where to go and maximize the chance of sightings of sharks and dolphins and we were no disappointed. There are lots of different options to enjoy a trip on the water in Key West but these folks make as if you are spending a couple of hours with friends and family. What a memorable, fascinating experience. After reading all of the positive reviews, I had high expectations and it lived up to the hype. I took my 5 and 8 year old nieces on the tour and they loved it, as did all of the adults on board. Captain Dave and Clay were friendly, safe, informative and entertaining. Their boat was spacious and comfortable with a cooler full of cold drinks. Bring sunscreen and charge your camera/phone! We saw and fed dozens of hungry sharks up close and personal. We also saw plenty of dolphins, sea turtles, sting rays and fish. Check in was easy but give yourself time to park and walk to the dock. Highly recommend this experience! We where looking for a fun filled trip with our two and three year old boys. Oh boy did we find one! I'm always a little weary of my boys on open water. The boat was extremely smooth and also had a fence completely around the boat. I would give them a ten for safety. The father/son crew was very friendly and knowledgeable. The adventure! As we slowly pulled into anchor in the middle of nowhere I'm assuming the captain pushed a magic dinner bell only sharks can hear. Almost immediately the sharks started rolling in. My boys love the zoo but the joy I saw in their face couldn't compare. There is something special about see animals in the wild vs behind glass and cages. read more

Dave and Clay made for an informative and fun two-hour adventure on their catamaran out of Key West at the Westin Marina. We learned a lot about sharks and really enjoyed watching Dave and Clay feed the 20 or so lemon sharks. Quite amazing. We also saw some dolphins We booked our reservation through Hyatt Windward Pointe after the "vendor presentations" at the beginning of our stay. We were offered a good discount via Hyatt -- and then Dave offered an additional discount for cash when we showed up to board the boat. We appreciated that, but even had we paid full price we would have more than had our money's worth. Good way to spend an afternoon in Key West. Comfortable ride with shade overhead. Soft drinks and water provided Our boat had about 15 passengers. It can hold twice that number. Perhaps not good for Dave and Clay, but the fewer number meant we all had plenty of chances to get close to the edge of boat to watch the feeding. Great photo opps! I cannot describe how awesome this trip was! I'm a shark lover...I don't miss Shark Week...I am not to be disturbed during shark programming...and I have quite the collection of shark stuffed animals, shark collectibles, heck, even a shark bookmark! So for me, this was the culmination of decades of love for sharks and it did not disappoint. We paid in cash - $75.00 per person - for a two hour shark watch. The Captain Ken and his first mate, Clay (his nephew) run the tour and both are extraordinarily knowledgeable, not just about sharks, but also other sea creatures as well. We got lucky and had a small tour group so there wasn't a bad "seat" in the house when it came to seeing stuff. Captain Ken (and Clay) were able to very quickly spot things in the water (I was just in awe of the pretty colors most of the time) and point them out to us. We saw a ton of ballyhoo (the fish that can skip along the water). Clay called them the "hot dogs of the sea" as everything is out to eat them! We also saw a huge sea turtle and many sting rays. Then, there were the sharks! Mostly lemon sharks but we did see one teeny (by teeny I mean, probably 3-4 feet long) black tipped shark. Ken and Clay baited the sharks with fish heads so we could see them feed, all the while, feeding us information about the sharks, the environment and so forth. It's clear they have a love of the sea and of all the creatures in it. After seeing the awesome-ness of the sharks, we headed out to see if we could catch sight of some dolphins! We came across a few different pods, even saw some break the surface, but most were happily slumbering, not playing, and Ken and Clay were very respectful of allowing the dolphins to sleep uninterrupted. It was such a cool adventure and we were so glad that we decided to go on the tour. If we come to Key West again, I'll definitely be going back out! read more

Do yourself a favor and book this tour! Tickets are $75 each if you pay in cash. This is a family business owned by captain Ken and both him and his son clay accompanied us on our voyage on the tiger cat. It is the only tour of its kind in key west. You start out in the harbour where we saw pods of dolphins. Then we made our way to the flats. Captain Ken has been boating here a long time so truly knows his way around. The ride out had spectacular views - we saw shore birds, floating man of war jelly fish, and dolphins. Once in the flats they put the bait on the line and ring the sharks dinner bell. We were in Florida directly after a very cold snap so even the sharks were moving a little slow. We did see three lemon sharks ranging from 5-9 feet in length. I love sharks so to finally see them not in an aquarium was so cool. You can tell they have a lot of respect for both nature and the environment. Sodas and waters as well as snacks are provided. It was so nice to be out on the water and have this one of a kind experience - great! read more

This tour could have gone from 3 stars to 5 easily. We started out and they fed the sharks pretty soon after. That part was neat but short (about 15 min). The driver heard there were dolphins so he cut the feeding short to go look for them. I guess that was alright but the purpose was the sharks. The rest of the trip was looking for dolphins which we didn't find. I get they can't control that. Here's where it could have gone better. The uncle aka captain I believe, seemed like a really interesting guy and knew a ton. Instead of sitting in the back I wish he would have gone on the speaker and shared facts and stories. Maybe he didn't have to talk the whole time but it would have made the trip. Hopefully he reads this review and shares more about the ocean and the area especially during down times. read more
