We came here during offseason, so it was dead, but it was one of the only places open at 5pm on a saturday so we stopped by. It was great! It's a local place and the seafood and french fries were amazing. I had the grouper sandwhich and it was actually cooked perfectly and the veggies were fresh. They have speciality, locally brewed beer that's fun to sample as well. The waiter was extremely friendly and the Ice cream was super good! Nice location, good service, but we were really disappointed in our wraps. I had the grilled shrimp wrap, but the shrimp wasn't even grilled! Aside from steamed, unseasoned shrimp, the wrap only had canned artichokes, red peppers and huge onion slices. A wrap needs some filler and/or sauce! It just wasn't good. My boyfriend got the Boca Grande wrap with breaded fish, which at least had rice to fill in the spaces, but it was bland. I would give 1 or 2 stars for the wraps alone, but bumped it up to 3 because the beer pitcher was a good deal, the fries were good, and I imagine the other items on the menu are probably much better. The Loose Caboose is like many other Gasparilla restaurants...when they get slammed in peak season the service can suffer. However the food - particularly the seafood- is always fresh, tasty and interesting. I have never tried their other deserts because they make their own ice cream and it is terrific...particularly the blueberry cheesecake! read more

Boca Grande is one of the locales I frequent when I want to escape the cold, stressful northeastern winters. It's a paradise that is hidden from the mainstream. Right in the middle of this charming downtown is Loose Caboose. I love coming here after a morning at the beach. Last time that my wife, kid and I were here, I had fresh grouper sandwiches. I've been eating at the Caboose for 10+ years (always lunch) and it never fails plus it's a great setting. My most recent visit was on Tuesday. We got there a little before noon and had no trouble finding a table (rare). This time I had a 1/2 salad w/ a 1/2 chicken salad sandwich - both very good. My husband had a Cuban panini - it's one of his favorite sandwiches and the Caboose's is his favorite version. I also had a piece of key lime pie - very good but could use just a little more bite. The loss of a star comes from the need for new cushions and the price tag... this is not a cheap, economical, reasonable (choose an adjective) meal. A group of 8 friends gathered for lunch on 1-28-14. All around the experience and the food were terrible. The waitress was uninformed on the menu, service took way too long and the quality of the food was not good. A simple cob salad did not contain all of the ingredients listed on the menu and the grilled chicken was deli chicken... NOT real. We will not return. read more

Daytripped from Naples to this magnificent gem and had the BEST grouper sandwich YET in FL. Our waiter Eric was a 10 and was very helpful with places to see while in town for a few short hours. The day we went was close to the end of the season but still spring break for many. Kids were everywhere eating ice cream and driving golf carts to and from the LC. My beau and I both had the sandwiches but he ordered onion rings and I had the fries-they were both delicious. Highly recommend going here for lunch and renting bikes for a quick tour of Gasparilla Island. We will be back! read more

So I've been coming here since 1984. There is no better fried grouper sandwich anywhere and I'm stunned at the reviews I've been reading about rude wait staff. I've never ever had that happen to me. But I'm super polite to wait staff so that may be the difference. But the ICE CREAM... I don't understand it. They have been making Oreo ice cream since 1984 which has a chocolate base and is different than their cookies and cream which is a vanilla base. It's amazing and you can't get it anywhere else in the world. If you ask them they tell you it's their best selling ice cream and yet... they literally never have it. If it's your best selling ice cream why don't you ALWAYS make sure to have it? In addition I just phoned down there and asked if they had it, the response was (of course) no, and she corrected me and told me it was called Cookies and Cream... I mean no... no it's not. And if it is now, have they stopped making the Oreo all together? I certainly hope not but they way the ice cream has been run for the past 7-8 years I wouldn't be surprised. UGH... please bring OREO (not cookies and cream) back and have it regularly!!! read more

I've read a few recent reviews about poor services. We ate here on a cloudy day, so it may not have been very busy. In any case, our service was very good thanks to our waitress Candance. I had the grouper fingers for an appetizer and they were great. The fish was fresh and the coating was not too heavy. Take away a star for the wait once you do get a table and for no liquor service (what would be better on a scorchingly hot day than something cold/frozen to take the edge off), but everything else is fantastic. It's not fancy but the food is always cooked perfectly. We come here every year with friends and family over our vacation, and never leave displeased. Let me start by stating the obvious: their prices are high. But this is Boca Grande so that's a given. We had the Boca Grande Wrap and the grilled shrimp wrap. Both were delicious! The BG wrap was packed with grilled grouper, black beans, rice, etc. The grilled shrimp wrap had about a half pound of medium sized shrimp and various veggies. $31+ before tip, but worth every cent. read more

Sadly my visit here was not so good. It wasn't that crowded but service was awful and the food was just ok. The location was great and the actual restaurant was charming but I won't go back simply because of the service and food. I had the crab cake sandwich and it was full if shells! A friend and I drove to Boca Grande from Sarasota to have lunch. We chose a restaurant at random from the internet. What a nice surprise. The service and food were outstanding. We had two baskets of the grouper fingers (to die for) and split a walnut cranberry salad with grouper added. Fantastic. The house pinot grigo was also excellent. read more

This is a great place to eat in Boca Grand right in the middle of downtown. It's your typical island joint with burgers, sanwhiches, beer and so much more. Something that did catch my eye on the menu that's uncommon is the crab cake sandwich. Therefore, that's what I did order. It was really great! The bread used is a unique and was really good. Add fresh lettuce and tomato making it a great sandwich. It was so good, so much so that I'd definitely order it again. They also have a large variety of beers as well. I reccomend the key was sunset beer. It has a hint of orange in it that makes it extremely refreshing. The outside seating is an awesome touch to the island life, and I would reccomend that you take advantage of that option. They also have a dog menu!! Yep, I said that right. Options include: two chicken tenders, a hamburger patty, and for desert they have doggy ice cream. Love that touch, so bring your dog!! Overall, great place for lunch with a good variety of options for everyone. read more

Stopped in about 3 pm for a snack before dinner as we had missed lunch. Fresh fried grouper fingers. NO frozen fish here! They cut their fish from a real fish - how refreshing to get fresh fish! Perfectly lightly fried. Squeeze of lemon - voila! Simple and just right. They were closing and I think the staff left before we did but would absolutely go again. I have eaten at this restaurant 3 times. What they do well, they do really well. What they do bad, well, is easily fixed, but honestly inexcusable. First the good: THE FOOD IS GREAT. I eat out several times per week at a wide range of restaurants from casual to fine dining. I consider myself a foodie (although I hate that term) and feel qualified to evaluate restaurants from food to decor to service. The Boca Grande Wrap combines deliciously fresh fish with yellow rice and black beans. It is delicious and unique. I've not seen it other places and everyone I was with liked it too. I generally like to try a bite of everyone else's meal and really liked everything I tried from the Reuben and burgers, to the various smothered French fries and kids meals. The location is right in downtown Boca Grande and is absolutely charming. You will feel like you're on vacation just being here. Now for the bad. Each of the 3 times I have been here, the attitudes of almost everyone I came into contact with was somewhere between rotten and inconvenienced to have us there and I assure you, I am not one of those high maintenance diners who is hyper critical and has unreasonable expectations. To the contrary, I am pleasant and generally enjoy interacting with people. 3 times here, however, with the same treatment is too many to be a coincidence. Upon arrival, many servers, managers and staff saw us arrive, and never stopped to see if we needed help, wanted a table or anything else. It took 10 minutes the first time to figure out, and only when we stopped someone to ask, that all tables were first come, first served (a really annoying system for a restaurant but OK). That time and each subsequent time, the multiple people we interacted with had terrible attitudes and almost actually seemed inconvenienced by us as if we showed up unexpectedly at their personal residences to eat. Our lunch there today was with a party of ten. This restaurant features inside and outside dining. There were people already eating in both spots when we got there. We asked for outside as we spotted adequate space. The staff did everything they could to discourage that as it was obvious that they did not want to have to carry out 10 meals any farther than absolutely necessary. It was so awkward that I finally said, well I guess it's whatever you prefer. Instead of recognizing my passive aggressive sarcasm, they accepted my defeat and sat us inside, but not before offering to split our "huge" party in two and acting like we needed Congressional approval to unite two tables, which we finally had to offer to do ourselves. This experience follows up on our last where a server actually got snarky with us for being in her way, while standing and waiting for a table near the door to the inside. It is clear to me that this pervasive attitude is from the top down, at least at all of management and more probably starting at the ownership level. I am a business owner myself and would fire staff over these issues. If the food wasn't so darn good, this place would have gone out of business long ago. Great food. Wanted to give more stars but I couldn't get past these issues. read more
