Don't sleep on this spot!!! Small local corner shop with biiiiig flavor. My partner and I were lucky to find Khatan on Yelp while browsing Japanese spots we had yet to visit. The space is very cozy, quiet, almost unassuming. For a Saturday evening, there were only 3-4 parties around us. I was relieved as some of our favorite sushi spots in this area tend to require reservations. We were welcomed graciously and were happy to hear the staff's recommendations. SALMON SPECIAL: !!! Pretty unique! I loved the beet-marinated salmon, this was nice and sweet. The green curry was interesting, though outshone by the former. TUNA TATAKI: A LOT of topping for a tataki...! Like overflowing! I liked it ^_^ But a lot of onion and texture. I mainly was curious towards the ponzu soy mayo, which didn't fail to be bright and flavorful. BACON OF THE SEA: My partner is the BIGGEST fan of salmon skin so this was a must-have. SO good. Crispy outside, tender inside, plus all the fatty goodness throughout. SAKE DON: Supa fresh!! With thick cuts. The rice is seasoned well, not too sour. I could've done without the lemon slices, but it might be someone else's cup of tea. Overall, pretty solid sake don :3 We got lucky with parking and found a spot across the street... But I'd come a bit earlier to scout out the area if you've driving.

NEXT UP AND COMING SUSHI RESTAURANT If you have not been to Khatan Sushi in Oakland, let me be the one to tell you that you should add it to your list immediately. This restaurant delivers an elevated yet comforting dining experience that feels both special and effortlessly cool at the same time. We started with the Mongolian Beef Dumplings and they were surprising in the best way possible. Perfectly pan fried, juicy, flavorful, and truly one of those dishes you instantly consider ordering again. It has some of those juices from an XLB dumpling The Wakame Salad was fresh and vibrant, and the chirasi Bowl was delicious. The layers of flavor and the mix of textures created something memorable that I would absolutely return for. The tuna tataki was ridiculous. It was tender in a way that felt almost unreal and the light smoky sear created the perfect balance without overwhelming the delicacy of the fish. We ordered the Catan Roll along with another roll that I unfortunately cannot remember the name of, but trust me when I say a new staple in your die. Each roll was beautifully presented, creative without being overly fussy, and packed with flavor in every bite. It felt healthy. The service truly elevated the night. The woman helping us carried herself with a posture of elegance and grace that matched the environment perfectly. She was warm, knowledgeable, and attentive without hovering. Her subtle presence made us feel comfortable and taken care of which contributed to the relaxed and beautiful dining experience. Khatan Sushi achieves that rare combination of impeccable food, serene ambiance, and outstanding service. Dining here felt like having exceptional food in a peaceful and inviting space that encourages you to slow down and enjoy the moment. Oakland has a gem and I will definitely be returning.

Visiting town for work and was craving sushi. This place was not too far from my hotel. I decided to give it a try and really enjoyed it. My favorite was the Tuna Tataki and the rainbow roll, which was real crab and avocado topped with salmon, maguro and Hamachi. I made a reservation and was able to sit pretty quickly. It's not a big restaurant so a reservation is definitely recommended. They do have four seats at the sushi bar but mostly dining room seating. I plan to come back !

I really wanted to like this place but it just wasn't my favorite. Seating is comfortable but maybe cause it was hot outside, we had to keep swatting small flies away while we were eating. Other than that, it's solid if you want to crave your sushi craving but may not be the most prime sushi you've had. They do give you a good portion for the tempera. The sauce is good but also the fry was not my favorite either.

This place is so cute!! I loved everything I ordered and the staff was super attentive. Will def come again(: Lychee lemonade - 10/10 i added iced tea to it also it's more on the tart side Mongolian dumpling - 10/10 it's almost like a big soup dumpling - chewier with more meat Chirashi bowl - 8/10 everything went well together and tasted fresh, three varieties of fish, rice was really good with a sauce Cherry blossom roll - 8/10 not your typical cherry blossom it had fried shallots and a sauce Spicy miso cucumber - 10/10 sauce was really tasty Brussels sprouts and karage - 9/10 it's a gigantic serving lol the chicken was super crispy

Friendly service and cute decor! Yakitori- I really liked the sauce! Chicken wasn't overcooked and the veggies were lovely. Partner had the chirashi - he liked it~ Omakase had some fun pieces like the salmon marinated in beet juice! Quality was decent and cute serving spoons for the sashimi Matcha tres leche - not too sweet :) fun take on it but wasn't my thing but my partner really liked it. Bathrooms in the back to the left. Street parking in downtown, can be easy or hard depending on when you go. Reservations are welcome online~

We visited for our first time and we loved everything about it! The vibes are incredible. The fish is so fresh and we did not have a single dish we did not love. We loved all the small details. The owners are so sweet and kind. We will definitely bring our family and friends here.

Omakase with added toro. Every bit as delicious as it looks.
    Miguel L.

Turns out there are now two great sushi spots downtown. Ordered the nigiri omakase with the added toro, had a spot of green tea on an exceptionally windy and wet day, and watched the people go by as I enjoyed my assortment of sushi. Rice was good, not dry, and the fish was fresh, flavorful, and appropriately tender. Service was nice, my server told me what everything on the platter was, some of which I retained! Presentation was lovely. Inside was nice, playlist was the usual "hip hop jams to study to" that seems to be pervasive everywhere. I'd come back and try some particularly enticing sounding rolls (bacon of the sea featuring salmon skin, cue Homer drool noise).

Stahhhhp...omakase for under $50 and delectable rolls with fresh sushi atop rolls in bite sized perfection. Loved everything from the time we parked our car -- plenty of parking in the neighborhood, and we walked over and entered and the sweet melody of Jhene Aiko was coming through the speakers. I knew it was going to be a good night. The server did a great job of letting us know of tonight's specials. We opted for the omakase, rainbow roll, and Godzilla roll. I loved each morsel and was only disappointed in myself for not being able to fit anymore food in my stomach after a starter of sunomono salad and yakitori and the two rolls. My husband enjoyed the diversity of flavors. Arigato gozaimasu to the chef -- will tell our friends and family to come check yall out for sure!

    Chirashi bowl.

They have good night sushi. The rolls are Small and too saucy. The sirashi bowl is my favorite.

    Agedashi tofu
    Ashley T.

The place is super cute, ambiance was great, and the lady that helped us was really nice and very attentive. The food tho was a bit disappointing. We got the agedashi tofu was hard and not soft. Next we got the grilled mackerel and that was ok I just wished they didn't mix balsamic vinegar and fish. It didn't mix very well. The omakase set was a very good price, but the only one that tasted good was the tuna and the sake salmon. Everything else was interesting. The mackerel nigiri was the worst. I wasn't sure what was going on and the fish didn't seem ok. As it just mushed in my mouth. My partner and I love omakases so we were a bit disappointing. I would say if you're there for like an American style sushi I think you might enjoy it more, but as we are more into the omakase style it didn't suit our taste. We don't see ourselves coming back unfortunately.

Happy that there's a sushi restaurant that serves affordable omakase walking distance from me in downtown Oakland. I ordered the 10pc omakase which was only $49, and came with some premium bites like hotate scallop and toro. The most unique bite for me was the beet cured salmon, vibrant color but you can actually taste the beet flavor as well. Highly recommend if you want to scratch that itch for some premium sushi on this side of the bay.

The good: fresh, quality ingredients The bad: started with the host/wait list. I accidentally added my name twice for a solo diner. Host thought it was a mistake and completely removed me from the wait list and seated other parties that came in after me. Thoroughly confused - she didn't even call my name to confirm so I had to go up to her and ask. No apology either. Was seated at the counter where solo diners usually sit. Service was non existent. Server came up to me and ask "what would you like to order?" I've never been there before. No "hi my name is ... I'll be your server" nada. They're just a machine - people in people out. The ramen - broth was fine. The squiggly noodles aren't my favorite. Expected to have kernel corn but had corn ribs instead (good thing I'm good with chopsticks!) The charshu was just okay. Enoki topping was just ... aight. The nice touch was that they didn't put it in the ramen and served it on the side to preserve its crunchiness because it definitely needed the texture! It was loud, busy, and nothing spectacular about the dining scene here. $55 dollars later (ramen, 2 additional toppings, one box of sake) ... I sadly don't think it was worth it.

A simple menu allows the customers to order quickly and for the restaurant to crank out the items for fast turnover. As others have mentioned, it's less of an Omakase and more of a sushi or sashimi set. Mujiri definitely have their business model set up well in practice. The thing that has always been lacking has been the service. Through my three times here, dine in and take out guests are always waiting until they get some attention from whichever staff gets flagged down while they're in the middle of something else. During my most recent visit, the order predicted an online pick up of 40-50 minutes. I ended up taking my time leaving the gym and arrived at the 40 minute mark. Waited around and noticed my delivery ETA shifted for another 10 minutes. Once the 10 minutes were up I tried to flag a staff, and they told me it would be another 15 minutes. Through watching the orders, they had obviously not even started on my order yet. It was literally 30 minutes before closing when I got my order. It also didn't make sense as there wasn't much turnover for the dine in customers. They definitely need a better system as it was apparent that me and five other parties easily waited an additional 30 minutes each with no real explanation. It's unacceptable for a restaurant to neglect customers or giving timely updates and expect a disingenuous apology would make up for it. I admit that I like that offerings, but for the actual quantity and poor service, this place is severely overrated.

Highlights for me were all the Japanese fish, which are specially curated and killed with a technique to reduce fish stress. What makes this place so special is their fish supplier, famed Japanese fish concierge Hiroshi Hasegawa. He's known for sourcing rare and unusual fish that are rarely sold commercially, and he sometimes even free-dives to catch them himself. Sushi Salon is currently the only restaurant in the United States that he supplies, which means you truly won't get this exact experience anywhere else. The rice alone deserves its own praise. The vinegar they use is only supplied to a select few in the U.S., and in my opinion, it was the best sushi rice I've ever had. I could honestly eat the rice on its own. The space is incredibly intimate, with only seven seats per seating at 5:00pm and 7:30pm. Watching each course being prepared right in front of us made the entire experience feel personal and immersive. Every piece of fish was excellent, but the standouts for me were the saba, uni, medai, ninjin, and kegani. Joji Nonaka and Anna Osawa were wonderful hosts. They engaged with guests throughout the evening and shared thoughtful insights and history behind the fish and techniques, which made the meal even more meaningful. Parking was surprisingly easy with street parking nearby, though the surrounding area feels a bit gritty, so I wouldn't leave anything visible in your car. At the end of the omakase, you're given the option to order additional pieces or specialty items not included in the set menu. I highly recommend taking advantage of that and trying as much as you can. Overall, if you're looking to splurge on a truly unique and elevated omakase experience, Sushi Salon is absolutely worth it. It took a little while to get service after I was seated, I was close to finding somewhere else to eat, But I am so glad i stayed! I opted for the OG handroll selection. I believe the simple dishes let the quality of the food shine through, since there is nothing to hide behind. Each roll is brought out individually on a wooden stand. They are left open so you can see the ingredients. I appreciate that the soy sauce is in a dropper bottle. It is meant as a seasoning, not to bathe the food in.
