Judoku is a local, sushi spot located on the corner of Piedmont. When you walk in, you are greeted by lucky cat statues and various art pieces adorning the walls. The lighting is dim, providing a more elevated atmosphere. We came during lunch and surprising there was only 1 other guest there at the time. The staff seated us right away and we were able to order within a few minutes. The menu has a great assortment of sushi, bento boxes and more so if you're in a larger group, there is something for everyone. As a group of 3, my friends and I decided to split the meal family style and ordered bento boxes and a few rolls. The food came out within just a few minutes. The rolls are visually appealing and very appetizing. They held together nicely, although the spicy scallop roll was falling apart - however I do think scallop is trickier to work with so I didn't mind it. The bento boxes offered a great quantity of food for the price, so it was worth it! What stood out to me was the crisp texture of the tempura and katsu - only callout here is that the katsu was cut into thinner slices which you might not prefer if you like thicker slices. My new boyfriend brought me here for Valentine's Day dinner shortly after we became official. We had such a wonderful dinner, and enjoyed delicious udon! When we came in on Thursday evening after work, we were pleased that we had the restaurant to ourselves for a bit. By the time we left, the restaurant was full. Ordered sushi for dinner and lunch the next day. Let's get into it. Ordered: O Toro - REALLY fresh and worth the price if you like raw sushi. This is probably the best O Toro I've had in the baby's far from the Resteraunts I've been to. Bluefin Lovers - This was AMAZING. Also very fresh. Not too much sauce that it overwhelmed. Good serving of bluefin. Did not skimp out. Spider - I'm not a fan of anything cooked but I decided to try this. It was okay. I just wanted to see how it tastes. Crab is good, but because it's crunchy the sushi falls apart. Very dry too. Ironically after I was saying too much sauce is a bad thing. You can skip this one. Judoku - I would give this one a 7/10. Very close to Piedmont Ave. and Kaiser Oakland, Judoku is the perfect spot to dine outdoors with friends, a date, or just playing catch-up with a girlfriend. The staff is so accommodating and friendly, the interior inviting, but the outdoor area..unlike any other sushi spot in the East Bay with fun art, instagrammable backdrops, and just a cool essence. Well done! The menu is massive ~ we ordered the Kakiage Tempura and Bento Boxes for an afternoon lunch and omg what a deal! You can choose 2 or 3 items, so naturally we chose 3 ~ the avocado roll, teriyaki chicken, and pork gyoza accompanied by miso soup, edamame, and rice. Add a salad for a couple bucks if you're dining in! The Kakiage Tempura is so unique, crispy, and one of the most delicious appetizers in the East Bay..I said it! Delicate fried squares of shrimp, sweet potato, yellow onion, shitake and other root veggies combined into one bite. Glorious! And the value of what you can get in the bento box has me coming back for more. I only did the avocado roll this time, but can't wait to try more of their specialty rolls soon. The place is a little tucked away spot, the ambiance is very dim, great spot for a date night. I got the kamikaze sushi roll, it was okay. A bit too sweet for my liking and there was nothing really memorable about it. I only tried one roll so I'm not sure how the rest are but my friend really liked hers. The star of the show for me was the Kakiage tempura. It was really delicious, great portion, and just fun to look at and eat. It was crispy and you could taste all the little veggies in there. Came to Judoku Sushi on a Thursday night for a mini High School Reunion slash catch up session with three other friends. Note that Judoku Sushi has another location off College/Berkeley and to make super sure when making plans to come here. As other folks have mentioned, the area can be super sketchy and parking can be hard to find. I ended up suggesting to have the others park at the parking lot across the street in the plaza where Sprouts/Starbucks/Chipotle resides due to the difficulty of finding street parking. Luckily nothing bad happened around there. Once you enter the inside of the restaurant, Judoku is a pretty hip place. They have an indoor dining section and an outdoor patio area. Since it was around the Christmas holiday, the patio was adorned with a lit up tree adding to the ambiance. Service was good and prompt. Our waters were always refilled and the staff made a note to come get us when we waved them down. Among the four of us, we ordered 3 ramens, a Toro Bowl, and 4 rolls that we split. We did notice that the cost was pretty steep, although understood that it was Oakland pricing, as each of the rolls were just a dollar or two short of $20. Thing to note was that the rolls came out to be a decent size with 8 pieces for each of those rolls. In the end, it averaged to about $46 per person, which isn't horrible for Japanese. Would definitely be checking out the other location next time. read more

Parking can be a little hard but there's street parking but it's Oakland so always we aware and don't leave anything valuable in your car. It has been a long time since I have been able to avoid using soy sauce when consuming fish and even miso soup, meaning that, the fresh was very fresh and everything had a lovely flavor profile, for lack of a better word. The wait stage was patient with us as it took a while for our entire party to arrive and then order but once we did, we only had to wait a little bit for the food. The portions themselves look decent with some rolls being larger than others. They were just common rolls with not frills or anything and everything but the fish tasted food. The raw fish were slightly fishy so it took away from the rolls we ordered. The rolls were giving high quality, with fatty tuna and truffle pâté like boujie how I like it. They also had plenty of nigiri to choose from which I'd like to try in the future. Lots of fish with some rice and greens. The chirashi bowl was also super fresh and worth it! I'm not really sure which fish was what, but they all had a smooth texture. They also don't list what's included because it's chef's choice and which fish is in season when you order. So it's great to be able to try different sashimi each time! Came on a Monday afternoon for lunch so there was no wait time. I grabbed a table on the patio out back. It's a cute space w/ string lights and plenty of heaters so it's nice and toasty. The fence is high so you're well separated from the industrial neighborhood/car dealerships. The waitress was nice enough and the service was quick. I ordered: - Veggie Gyoza: delicious! super crispy exterior with a flavorful interior (i'm unsure what vegetables were inside but I have zero complaints). The dipping sauce it came with was a great pairing. - Negihama Roll: a simple, but good roll. Just yellowtail and sliced green onions. The fish was fresh. I just wish there were a bit more green onions. And this is a TINY roll so don't expect it to fill you up. - White Dragon Roll: this is essentially a dragon roll, but it's topped with white tuna instead of avocado. I love white tuna so I enjoyed this a lot. It was drizzled with a ponzu sauce, but I couldn't taste it much. I asked for a side of unagi sauce and that helped kick it up a notch. - Miso Soup: they give this to you at the start of your meal. It tastes ok. Nothing special. Diamond in the rough is the best description for this awesome sushi joint. Outside block around the restaurant does look sketchy (Oakland), but once you come inside it's like you've been whisked away to fun vibrant scene. Food was very good and came with a belly filling portions. As an appetizer, the Ika Maruyaji was delicious and soft, but nothing about it was spicy. Aloha ahi poke tasted fresh and honestly was fantastic. Once again, for something that was supposed to be spicy, my toddler had no problem with it. My cousin and I both African American women wanted to try this place out tonight. Upon walking in the lady in the back gathering orders, kept looking up at us but pretending not to see us and never came to greet us. I started walking to the back towards her and asked "do we just seat ourselves? " She gave us a dry " I'm so sorry " and led us to our seat . After getting to the back , a female server was going to every table, and when she finally got to us, she didn't smile or greet us. She slammed on our waters and kept walking.. I watched her smile at other tables and when I made eye contact with her, she just kept walking past with a blank face we decided to leave and they pretended to be sorry. Tonight's dinner was our first time dining inside the restaurant; we usually get to-go. Wow! We were totally blown away. Everything was so thoughtfully prepared and we were so well cared for by the staff. The restaurant is a bit larger than it appears from the outside. Plenty of seating! I just have to note that most sushi places around town no longer serve miso soup with an order, but Joduku does. Also, their bento box is plentiful! Had an early dinner with the baby sister over the weekend and she specifically requested for Judoku Sushi. Upon arrival, we were immediately seated in which we opted for the outdoor patio. We ordered the Oyster Karaage to start with, then the Lion King (salmon over California roll, baked with Judoku sauce & tobiko) and Sexy Casanova Roll (spicy hamachi, unagi, avocado, rolled with salmon, tobiko, jalapenos & Judoku sauce) to share, which also came with their miso soup and salad. I wasn't a huge fan of the Karaage Oysters, but their Lion King and Sexy Casanova Rolls were appetizing! Staff was friendly and attentive throughout our meal. The outdoor patio, as well as the inside of the restaurant was clean and nicely decorated with a warm ambiance. All in all, we enjoyed our meal here. Hesitated to eat at Judoku Sushi due to the lack of parking but finally came in during opening hours and found plenty of parking around the corner. I think it might be the best time to dine in. I've tried the poke and Korean chirashi. They come with a side of spicy sauce on the side. It really is spicy so be careful not to add a lot because you won't enjoy your meal as much. I think the quality of the fish here is better compared to other restaurants. It's fresh, firm and not mushy. It just has a better taste. This might be the reason it's a tad bit more expensive but I don't mind at all. I know some of y'all will. I will try something new each time I eat here until I have tried the whole menu.
